The Things That Are God’s – Part 1

In 2002, a man named Michael Newdow filed a lawsuit in California. Mr. Newdow was upset and was feeling that his rights were being violated because the Pledge of Allegiance includes the words “one nation under God.” In his understanding the Constitution of the United States functions to prevent the federal government from, in his words, “infusing religion into public life.” In Mr. Newdow’s estimation, a public school that requires any child to recite anything at all, including the Pledge of Allegiance, that includes any reference to God amounts to that very thing. As far as he could see, the public school his own daughter attended was infusing religion into public life and into her against her will. And so he forbade his daughter from saying the Pledge of Allegiance at her school. It turned out later that the daughter was not offended herself by the wording of the Pledge. In an interview Mr. Newdow was asked how it was that he came to file his lawsuit. He said that one day he noticed how coins in the United States are impressed with the words “In God We Trust”. He said that he did not trust in God and that having words contrary to his beliefs on our currency was a violation of his rights and a failure on the part of the federal government to rightly uphold and enforce the Constitution. But instead of filing suit to have the words “In God We Trust” removed from our currency, he decided he would begin his campaign to have all mention of God withdrawn from public life by suing to have the words “one nation under God” removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. And, although Mr. Newdow was deeply offended by the words on his money, he continued to spend it as he wished. Mr. Newdow won his lawsuit at first, but lost later on appeal because it was ruled that he was not within his rights to have his daughter involved. Mr. Newdow went home to plot his next moves. Clashes between church and state are nothing new. For us, one wonders what Jesus might have to say about this case involving the Pledge of Allegiance. We can only speculate. Wouldn’t Jesus certainly affirm the truth of our nation being under God, under Him? Would Jesus agree with the concept of the separation of church and state as some people understand it? Suppose Jesus were here and someone asked Him, “what do you think: should the words “one nation under God” be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance? What do you suppose His answer would be? When the Pharisees and the Herodians asked Jesus if they should pay taxes to the State, they were trying to entrap Jesus by presenting Him with a dilemma. Either way He answered, they believed, would incriminate Him with either of one of two parties. If He said that it was wrong to pay tribute to Caesar, He would be in trouble with the Romans. If He said it was right to pay tribute to Caesar, He would be seen to betray His own people, the Jews. Jesus had told parables that cast the Pharisees in a bad light. They wanted revenge. They conspired together with the Herodians to ask Him a question strategically devised to corner Him and publicly discredit Him. To be continued . . .

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration. This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Wednesday 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. Wednesday 6:00 p.m.—7:00 pm Thursday 1:00 p.m.—2:00 p.m. Thursday 9:00 p.m.—10:00 p.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

miercoles 2:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. miercoles 6:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m. jueves 1:00 p.m.—2:00 p.m. jueves 9:00 p.m.—10:00 p.m.

Come join the Catholic Way Bible Study Thursday September 6th as we explore the book of Genesis! We will examine the themes of creation, sin, salvation, covenant and the calling of the Chosen People. The first eleven chapters deal with God and humanity at large. The remaining ones address the special role of the people called to be His very own. You will delve into the unforgettable characters of Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sara, Jacob and Joseph. In addition to the core themes, the study will discuss the relationship between faith and science, the Theology of the Body, moral absolutes versus cultural relativism, the question of evil and so much more!

We welcome all! Whether you are new or experienced in studying the bible, you will gain a deeper understanding of Sacred Scripture while making new friends! All you need is your bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church! We meet every Thursday from 10am-12pm from September through April upstairs in Kemper Hall, Room 205. We do break for the holidays from Thanksgiving through the New Year. The study is $9 which covers the cost of all lessons. If you want additional information, please call Julia Bradford at 281-748-4124 or email at: [email protected].

Knights of Columbus Council 6409 would like to thank everyone who donated diapers, wipes, and/or money to the 10th Annual Pro-Life Diaper Drive. The Drive was very successful and so many families in Kerr County will be blessed because of you. We appreciate you and pray for you.

1,328 diapers and 2,664 wipes were collected as well as $4,080.70 to purchase many more in the coming year.

Special thanks to Dorothy Cass and Fr. David for their support, the Knights who helped man the tables, the volunteers of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and The Parenting Resource Center for distributing the diapers, and Frank Bertagnolli for taking the Diaper Drive to the VA Hospital!

God bless you and see you next year!

Society of St Vincent de Paul Notre Dame Kerrville wish to thank the congregation for another generous second collection in the amount of $3,619. The month of July saw us assisting 497 families with bills,

food, clothing, and diapers. The aid total for the 1450 people in the families was $27,671 and in addition, $12,054 worth of “in Kind” goods like fans, diapers, and food drives were given directly to us to distribute. Unique assistance handed out were 3 families being relocated by Hill Country Crisis Center, a mobile home lost to a fire, prescription co-pays for chronic conditions, bus fare to get to work, a special baby formula, rain gear and shoes for a few chronically homeless people, and a bus ticket home for a stranded traveler.

Our volunteers donated 2500 hours of their time for the month. Want to join us? We have a list of 51 jobs which need to be done asap, mostly in the store. Also, every other month we need 20 volunteers for the mobile food pantry. We are 100% volunteer and no one gets a salary. Jobs include maintaining and creating excel spreadsheets to cleaning shoes.

Drop by when the store is open for a tour or call and ask for Debra, Jane, John, or Barbara (we have 5 so one should be in!) The phone number listed in the front of the bulletin under St. Vincent de Paul is the best number to call.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. Several years ago we received from Ralph Behrens an impressive bundle of books and DVDs from The Great Courses series – enough to keep a half-time college student busy for a full year. Providentially, we finally caught up with Mr. Behrens this month, who said the courses were “interesting and instructional”. Jesus and the Gospels, by Luke Timothy Johnson

The Catholic Church: A History, by William R. Cook

Each of these courses has a “Course Guidebook” of 142 or 202 pages and a DVD for the 36 lectures – enough for three classes per week for twelve weeks. Each chapter of the books concludes with provocative questions, i.e.: “Do you think that Pope Boniface VIII is right in his claim that to be saved, a person must be subject to the pope?” (The Catholic Church, p. 54) Great Authors of the Western Literary

Tradition, by Various Professors The Guidebook for this year-long course is 589 pages, and there are two boxes of DVDs for the 14 discs. The lecture subjects include Genesis and the Documentary Hypothesis, The Deutero-nomistic History, Isaiah, Job, The Gospels, Augustine, Dante Alighieri (two lectures), Erasmus, Thomas More, and William Blake. These courses are perfect examples of materials which may be used from this library with its liberal circulation policy. Anyone may check these DVDs and/or books out, and keep them as long as they are using them. We will phone you if someone else needs them.

FESTIVAL FOOD HANDLERS CLASS..... We will have another food handlers class on Monday, August 27th in the School Library in Kemper Hall from 6:00pm—8:00pm.. This class is free and a certificate is available if you wish to purchase one. Please come early to fill out paperwork. For questions call Katrina @ (830) 377-7051.

PLEASEM..If everyone picks up their envelope, we will not have to use precious resources in mailing them out! We are anxious to see who will be the big scratch off winner, so return your envelope FAST. If you cannot find your name, there are extra packets in the church and school office. They will also be able to help you if you want extra tickets and raffle tickets available.

3). Start Baking your cakes and cookies. It is suggested that each parish family provide 2 cakes and 2 dozen cookies, but more is always welcomed! The Cake Wheel is extremely popular and is a WIN-WIN for everyone.

4). We are looking forward to this year's festival and we are looking for exciting new silent and live auction items.

5). We have received a variety of items: designer backpack, jewelry, dinners, homemade bird house, gift baskets, gift cards etc. detailed lists to come soon!

8). We are also looking for a golf cart to use on the days of the festival, if you have one, please contact Katrina or Pete.

Thanks to Computer Clinic who helped sponsor the early bird drawing. We will keep you informed weekly as to the progress and where we can use your help.

Have you ever asked yourself:

How can I make my life a gift for others in charity/to my church community?

Well, we have the answer:

By exploring the many opportunities to assist your parish as a catechist,

nurturing the seeds of faith in children, youth, and adults.

But then you think:

I can’t do that. I don’t know my faith well enough to serve in this capacity.

But you do:

While you would be exploring the many opportunities for your own faith formation you would also be

serving and helping in planting and/or nurturing the seeds of faith in so many, whether it be in our

children, youth or in our adults. We really need your help in many areas whether it be in preparing

parents and/or godparents at Pre-Baptismal preparation classes or walking with our children/teens in

their faith journey. If you feel like you are being called please call the Youth and Family Ministry at 830 896-4233 for more

information. Perhaps God is tapping you on the shoulder.
