15   THANK YOU!

Dear friends, !!Our chapter has travelled great distances from what it was at the very beginning of last September—a handful of students seeking to channel their energy and passion for social justice in a tangible manner. !!Since then, we have officially established our chapter on campus, and expanded our handful to a group of nearly 30 student advocates. We led a powerful campaign for our partner and for the movement for social justice and global health equity. Even more exciting have been the educational experiences this past year: confronting ourselves with questions we’ve never been asked or deeply thought about previously, and engaging in insightful global health discussion in the context of human rights and social justice. Most importantly, we’ve established a foundation for our partnership with CEPAIPA in La Libertad, Ecuador. We hope that this burgeoning attachment to our partner will encourage us to become closer as a chapter, increase our fundraising efforts and ambitions, gain a more profound cultural understanding, and inspire us to engage in more meaningful work.!!As founding co-presidents and a part of the GlobeMed family, the feeling is indescribable. GlobeMed has given us the opportunity to become active advocates for social change and to inspire others to do the same. We have joined others who, half a world away, also believe in the power of human relationships and urgency for a different world. !!We look forward to future years with you as we mobilize our communities and drive this movement forward in full momentum. Thank you for your past, present, and future support as we embark on this incredible journey.!!Best wishes,!!Sanjana Patel & Rachel Leopold!Co-Presidents of GlobeMed at Cornell 2010-2011!

GlobeMed at Cornell University

Dec. 3, 2010 World AIDS Day In honor of the millions affected by the infectious disease, the newly formed E-board sold cupcakes iced with AIDS ribbons and GlobeMed symbols, distributed red AIDS ribbons, and hosted their first bi-annual Go Red for GlobeMed Bar Night.!

Holidays 2010 Holiday Individual Giving

The new E-Board reached out to family and friends over the holiday season to spread news about the new chapter, partner, and project. The overwhelming support was truly humbling.!!!!!!!

Feb. 20, 2011 World Day of Social Justice In recognition of the day, the chapter indulged in banana-chocolate chip pancakes, discussed common preconceived notions about social inequalities, and asked our community, “What does every person deserved?”. Check out the baggies we plastered campus with!!

April 25, 2011 The Banana Stand Did you know that bananas are a major Ecuadorian export? GlobeMed Week was launched with the Banana Stand, inspired from popular TV show “Arrested Development”. Excited GlobeMedders attracted community members with banana suits and colorful toppings ranging from M&Ms to sweetened coconut. !

ABOUT US GlobeMed at Cornell University

A chapter of GlobeMed was founded on Cornell’s campus in the fall of 2010. GlobeMed came as a refreshing excitement. It attracted students seeking to channel their passion for global health in an unique and meaningful manner. !!During the first few months, we began to establish our partnership with CEPAIPA in La Libertad, Ecuador, through our main contact, Dra. Alexandra. !!After one year, our impact can be felt in both Cornell’s and CEPAIPA’s communities: With the energy and enthusiasm of thirty students, we’ve raised nearly $4200 to support CEPAIPA’s programs--including the health, educational, and financial empowerment of 60+ young girls at CEPAIPA.!

KEY FACT: One in five adolescent females are mothers or pregnant in Ecuador--the highest rate in South America.!

KEY FACT: Ten percent of women between 15 and 24 years of age, who became pregnant at 15, had their pregnancies end in abortion--which is illegal in Ecuador.!

[About El Centro de Promoción y Atención Integral Para Adolescentes y Jóvenes]

FOUNDED IN 2004

The Center was created due to a lack of safe and open environment where adolescents in the area could go to: receive both mental and physical health services, plan and execute positive activities, train themselves in areas that affect youth (STIs, sexual/reproductive health, violence, etc.) through peer education, and participate in recreational activities such as music, drama, and other arts. CEPAIPA strives to positively impact the lives of Ecuador´s youth by offering them a safe place to meet with other adolescents, serve the community, and learn how to be responsible and mature citizens. !

[WORKS IN LA LIBERTAD, ECUADOR]

POPULATION: 77,646

Covering an area of 25 square kilometers along the South Pacific, La Libertad’s main sources of income are commerce, fishing, oil, and tourism. According to Ecuador’s healthcare system, healthcare is free for all, but only in public hospitals. Regarding healthcare in La Libertad, there is only one 15-bed public hospital, providing mainly basic maternal and infant care. It’s often difficult to receive care, if any, at the public level as there are many patients waiting it. As a result, they are forced to go to private clinics where out-of-pocket costs are very high. !!

Partner Contact: Dr. Alexandra Tamayo, Coordinator and Physician at CEPAIPA!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PARTNER

Dear GlobeMed partner, !!Receive a warm greeting from CEPAIPA, (Center of Integral Promotion and Attention for Adolescents) a high school based youth center located in the city of La Libertad on the coast of Ecuador. CEPAIPA is dedicated to providing mental and physical health services to the country´s youth, in addition to offering positive alternatives to negative activities such as gangs, violation of human rights, premature and unprotected sexual behavior, and so on.!!Since beginning a relationship with your GlobeMed chapter, we have communicated via e-mail and Skype on various occasions to discuss the projects we will carry out and what needs to be done in order to achieve that. One afternoon, the youth at CEPAIPA, the two Peace Corps Volunteers who are also at this site, as well as myself, had a video conference with your entire GlobeMed chapter so that we could get to know each other better. Due to some challenges regarding communication, we have had to postpone two of the three projects which we have discussed, however, I am confident that we will be able to carry out the projects soon. !!Before signing off, I would like to personally thank all of the students who have worked so hard to raise funds for CEPAIPA this year. They will be put to good use according to the plans we have discussed with Globe Med. I am looking forward to continuing our relationship with your chapter and positively touching many lives in the process! !!With regards, !!Dr. Alexandra Tamayo!!--!From an email: "Es muy importante la formacion en solidaridad y ayuda para el desarrollo integral del ser humano." (The formation of solidarity is very important, as it supports the development of the human being!

GlobeMed at Cornell University

[Why women’s empowerment, health education, and community health?]!By focusing on promotion and prevention projects, we hope to critically improve the standard of living of those in our partner community. Because 40% of La Libertad’s population is between ages 12-19, it’s a particularly important matter to focus of the youth. If young girls themselves are empowered, they are in the unique position of having the power to cause positive change in their community. Healthy, independent young women can guide their families in leading healthier and more fulfilling lives, ultimately improving the overall way of life of their community.!

GlobeMed at Cornell University aims to support peer-to-peer sexual health education and income-

generating projects for 60 girls in La Libertad, Ecuador.!

!Each aspect of out project will empower members of the CEPAIPA community in different ways. CEPAIPA’s staff will train 60 teenage girls about health education (youth health promoter training) while

they participate in an income-generation project making jewelry made of recycled materials. The other component of our Community Health Program is a series of eight public health forums (open to community) led by CEPAIPA’s staff and local community leaders (each covering a

different health-related issue such as nutrition, physical health, HIV/STD prevention, mental health, child well-being, maternal health,

drugs/alcohol abuse, etc.). !

2010 – 2011:!

only did we exceed our fundraising goal, but we also established a strong presence on our campus and in our local community.!

CAMPAIGNS 2010 – 2011 Annual Report!

THE BANANA STAND APRIL 25, 2011 Inspired by Arrested Development, we set up a frozen banana stand on Ho Plaza, Cornell's busiest pedestrian walkway. The event couldn't have been planned at a more perfect time; the frozen treats were exactly what the students wanted for the sun's long awaited return to campus. Customers were able to choose from a variety of toppings for their chocolate covered bananas like coconut, M&Ms, sprinkles and peanut butter chips. Students were especially eager to talk social justice issues with our banana mascots!!

GUERRILLA MARKETING FOR WDSJ FEBRUARY 20, 2011 To welcome our new staff, we organized a pancake dinner to familiarize ourselves with each other and the major issues of social inequality. We immediately bonded on our passion for social justice (and pancakes). In order to make some of these problems more apparent to the campus community we filled sandwich bags with a handful of dried rice and a slip of paper stating "This is all a majority of the world can afford to eat each day" to hand out to strangers on campus. We were able to make a startling and emotional impact on the student body.!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR

GLOBALHEALTHU

GlobalHealthU at Cornell served as a medium to educate students and encourage them to think critically about various global health issues through the reading of passages, viewing of videos, and facilitation of open discussions. Members were challenged at weekly meetings to question their perceptions of fundamental values such as community, privilege, and rights by exploring global health from many differing lenses. !!By fostering a holistic and critical understanding of issues in global health, both members and nonmembers were empowered and inspired to work towards global health and social justice, particularly by assisting our partner organization, CEPAIPA, in the pursuit of global health equity. !

COMMUNITY BUILDING

!TOTAL # OF CHAPTER MEMBERS:!!# OF COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS:!!!For our new chapter, Community-building has been important for forming close bonds between members. To create these relationships we hosted a variety of different community building events ranging from formal team building events to small social gatherings. !!Our first E-Board Retreat helped us start working together as a team, build personal relationships amongst members, and align our values and thoughts about beginning a strong GlobeMed chapter at Cornell. !!Informal social events, such as Sunday brunches have facilitated creating stronger personal relationships amongst members. The year has been great for building a chapter with members full of excitement to be part of GlobeMed!!

Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the

GlobeMed network and surrounding communities. !

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

GLOBEMED AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. !!OUR QUESTION: What does everyone deserve?!!BEHIND THE SCENES: [As a GlobeMed chapter, we often stress the importance of health equity because we firmly believe that healthcare is a basic human right that everyone deserves. When asked to create and answer a question for WDSJ, we decided to challenge ourselves to think more broadly about what equity actually means. We realized that besides health and the acess to proper care, there are other important basic rights and needs that many people do not have such as a loving family, friends, an education, and shelter. !!MORE WDSJ ACTION -----------------------------------!!WDSJ Pancake Dinner: During our pancake dinner in honor of World Day of Social Justice, our globalhealthU Coordinators hosted an activity to get everyone thinking about how much we actually know about social injustices in the world around. Attendees were shocked to learn, for example: in no city or county in the US can a full-time worker who earns minimum wage afford to pay rent and utilities on a one-bedroom apartment, and that there were more than 22,000 deaths from acts of terrorism worldwide last year according to the US State Department--and over half those killed or injured were Muslims. !!!!

What does everyone deserve?

OUR FUTURE

This past year has been full of invaluable experiences and lessons for the members of our chapter. During the 2011-12 school year, we plan to take what we’ve have learned to take our young chapter to the next level. !!As a chapter, our greatest unified objective is to build and strengthen relationships both on campus and off. The biggest of which is our partnership with CEPAIPA. We hope to bring their voice and story back to Cornell’s campus and the Ithaca community in a more compelling and inspiring manner--through a powerful campaign and line of globalhealthU events. Additionally, we’ll be working to build relationships with other student organizations on campus and health initiatives in Ithaca itself. By doing so, we hope to drive forward GlobeMed’s mission and vision by creating space and a community of social justice advocates in Tompkins County of upstate New York. !!By engaging as many of our students in GlobeMed’s annual Leadership Institute and Global Health Summit as possible, we hope to connect Cornellians to the power of GlobeMed’s network to help them discern their role in the movement for global health equity. !!As a young chapter, we have a lot to accomplish to get to where we’d like to be in the next five or even ten years. But with a passionate group of committed students who strive to nothing less than greatness, there is no doubt that GlobeMed at Cornell University will be able to contribute significantly in helping the world realize that health is a human right and a matter of social justice. !
