We have more experience, more knowledge, and, we hope, a little more wisdom and a deeper love for God and neighbor. As a result, when we turn our attention once again to Advent, to the three comings of Christ: his first, 2000 years ago; his last, sometime in the future, and his ongoing one, through his grace, his providence, and the sacraments - when we turn our attention to these three comings of Christ, we will see something new, something different. The FIRST Sunday OF ADVENT

November 27, 2016

The word ‘advent’, is from the Latin adventus (Greek parousia), and means ‘coming’ or

‘arrival’. The Advent Season is focused on the ‘coming’ of Jesus as Messiah (Christ or

King). It not only prepares us spiritually for Christmas (his first coming), but also for his

eventual second coming. Hence, the scripture readings during Advent include both Old

Testament passages related to the expected Messiah, and New Testament passages

concerning Jesus’ second coming as judge of all. It also includes passages about John

the Baptist, the precursor who prepared the way for the Messiah. When the Church cele-

brates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the

Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful

renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the precursor’s birth and martyrdom,

the Church unites herself to his desire: ‘He must increase, but I must decrease’. Since Advent looks for-

ward to Christ’s birth and Incarnation, it is an appropriate way to begin the Church Year.

This Advent is different from every other Advent that we have ever lived. It is different because we are

different. In the past year, we have changed. We have another year of life under our belts. Maybe it was

a year full of successes, joys, and advances. May be it was a year full of failures and sins. May be it was

a year of suffering and hardship. Whatever happened during the past year, it has affected us. We have

more experience, more knowledge, and, we hope, a little more wisdom and a deeper love for God and

neighbor. As a result, when we turn our attention once again to Advent, to the three comings of Christ:

his first, 2000 years ago; his last, sometime in the future, and his ongoing one, through his grace, his

providence, and the sacraments - when we turn our attention to these three comings of Christ, we will

see something new, something different. Jesus Christ is God. He is infinite beauty, power, goodness and

truth. We can never know him completely. He is an inexhaustible treasury of greatness. Because of our

life experience during the past year, we are now ready to discover new facets of this treasure, new lev-

els of meaning, wisdom, strength and joy. God’s providence has been preparing us over this past year,

so that we could now learn things about God and his plan of salvation that he couldn’t show us before,

because we weren’t ready. All three of those comings of Christ have the same purpose: to reestablish

and deepen our friendship with God. He is looking forward making that happen, to deepening our friend-

ship with him, in these coming weeks of Advent. Let us answer this challenge as we embrace a new li-

BECOMING THE BEST DISCIPLE: The quote for this week that also appears on the whiteboard in the

entry of the church is:

“Savor the blessings that our Savior provides

and give Thanks! .”

Take time this week to sit quietly, or perhaps as you drive to your des-

tination, to reflect on that question.

THE HOLY EUCHARIST: The Holy Eucharist is the heart and summit of the

Church’s life...for by this sacrifice he pours out

the graces of salvation on his Body which is the

Church. Let us therefore make use of the God-

given opportunity to participate in the Holy Eucharist, and

receive Holy Communion as often as we can.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE:

ADVENT GIVING TREE: St. Pat’s is in need of someone to

head up the Giving Tree during Advent. Please call the

church office (563.2283) or Jane Schmitz (563.2748) if

willing.

We are collecting plastic bags again to make blankets for

those in need. Please leave them in the basement.

Thank you!

Liturgical season of Advent

As a new liturgical year begins with the season of Advent, God

gives us another opportunity to celebrate His offer of love and

friendship, in and through His Incarnate Son, Jesus Christ. We

enjoy that love and friendship by being members of St. Pat-

rick/Holy Trinity parish families. As we celebrate the birth of

Jesus Christ, we are also reminded of his Second Coming at

the end of time. This coming is prophesied in the New Testa-

ment, and he comes to judge the living and the dead, and

bring about the final triumph of good over evil. The season of

Advent season is a time of grace to nurture and strengthen our

life of discipleship by devoting a little more of our God-given

time for prayer, participating in the Holy Eucharist regularly,

spending a little of our time for spiritual reading, and getting

involved in other corporal works of mercy. Thus we will be fully

prepared to encounter the Lord when he comes to meet us.

May you and I be inspired to answer this challenge of the Lord.

Thank you for your acts of mercy and kindness with

Heaven Cent donations. The buckets will help us

start the Advent Season. Heaven Cent is the week-

end of Dec. 3 and 4th at St. Pat’s and Dec. 11th at

Holy Trinity. Have a Blessed Advent.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the

Blessed Virgin Mary

The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin

Mary is celebrated on Thursday, December 8. It is a Holy Day of

Obligation, meaning all Catholics are obligated to celebrate the

feast by participating in the Holy Eucharist. Holy Trinity Parish family

will celebrate the feast with a Mass on Thursday, December 8 at

8.30 a.m. and St. Patrick Parish family will celebrate the feast with

a Mass on Thursday, December 8 at 5.30 p.m. Let us honor our

patroness, and imitate her example of discipleship.

Advent Reconciliation Service

The season of Advent Season focusses on the coming of Jesus

Christ. It reminds us of His threefold coming: His first coming over

2000 years ago; His last coming sometime in the future; and finally

His ongoing coming through His grace, His providence, and the sac-

raments. All of the three comings of Christ have the same purpose:

to reestablish and deepen our friendship with God. Christ is looking

forward to making that happen, and let us do our part by answering

that challenge through a life of repentance and conversion. Follow-

ing is the schedule for the advent reconciliation services: -

Wednesday, December 7 (for children in the religious educa-

tion program).

Friday, December 9 (Individual Confessions at 4.00 p.m. at

Holy Trinity).

Sunday, December 11 (Individual Confessions at 4.00 at

p.m. at St. Patrick).

FIRST FRIDAY EXPOSITION OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST,

ADORATION, AND BENEDICTION

St. Patrick Parish family will celebrate the

First Friday on December 2nd with a Mass at

5.30 p.m. followed by the Exposition of the

Holy Eucharist, Adoration, and Benediction at

7.00 p.m. Let us make our first Friday of ad-

vent special by participating in the Holy Eu-

charist, and spending a little time with the

Eucharistic Lord to receive graces and blessings for ourselves,

for our families, and for our world.

God of light and life, give us hope as we wait for your coming

again. When we are tempted to be grateful to have found you

while others are lost, send us out into the darkness in search of

those who need you most, we pray to the Lord. Amen
