September 2010 (Charities Aid Foundation) THE PROBLEM TURNING A BAD SITUATION INTO AN OPPORTUNITY CHRISTMAS Gift-giving a long-held tradition Among Asians, Filipinos are most generous in gift-giving Time of abundance and plenty CHRISTMAS Christmas gift-giving = Php24.8 B (2006) (SWS 2007) Nearly 4 of 5 Filipinos buy as much as 6 Christmas gifts One of 3 Filipinos buy Christmas gifts from bonuses or 13 th month salaries TURNING A BAD SITUATION INTO AN OPPORTUNITY Filipinos receive extra or unneeded Christmas gifts worth about 10 billion pesos OPPORTUNITY? Cash This a Pioneering Initiative Worldwide No competition in the industry exists THE SOLUTION: A PIONEERING INITIATIVE Parishioners donate Church collects/stores Church generates cash to help those in need Church Organizes tianggian Sells items half of market price + tax free to public ATENEO GRADE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE In Christmas of 2011, the Ateneo Grade School with a total student population of 4,000 was able to collect around 8000 extra Christmas gifts for the Program worth about 800, INNOVATION IN SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT SOURCING OF FUNDS Untapped yearly multi- billion alternative source-- extra or unneeded Christmas brand new gifts Does not need hard earned income Painless in helping the poor DONORS 1.Everybody can serve as donors- the youth, senior citizens, poor people, etc... 2.The donor base will be exponentially increased and widened 3.Diaspora community (OFW) can increase assistance to the Philippines INNOVATION IN SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT BENEFICIARIES 1.Program can serve three sets of beneficiaries at the same time: A)The rich can serves as beneficiaries as they are relieved of their extra and unneeded goods B)local community mainly the poor and middle class consumers plus INNOVATION IN SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT BENEFICIARIES c) calamity-stricken communities or c) poor communities currently serviced by Church 2. More poor people can be reached by the increased funds and donors involved in social development. INNOVATION IN SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT QUALITY AND TYPE OF ASSISTANCE 1.Local poor and middle class consumers are able to purchase brand new and unused quality goods at cheaper price in their locality. 2.Calamity-stricken communities get immediate cash in times of critical need. The church pro-actively responds to calamities as they have ready reserve cash generated at start of year. INNOVATION IN SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT QUALITY AND TYPE OF ASSISTANCE 3. Current poor communities serviced by the church can be served readily and responsively based on its beneficiaries need without having to get clearance with an outside donor regarding needed realignment of funds. BENEFITS ALL STAKEHOLDERS YOUTH Become Persons for Others; Social Entrepreneurs Learn responsible retailing business Major Stakeholders in Church and Nation-building Realize the Second Vatican Council call for the young people to be "the hope of the Church BENEFITS ALL STAKEHOLDERS SOCIETY Celebration of True Meaning of Christmas Revive Spirit and Culture of Bayanihan Resources for Social Development is increased and sustained Convert charity to development intervention in helping the poor Cooperation not competition is the mode to successfully generate funds The SHARE CARE Program intends to enable the youth to learn social entrepreneurship and experience another venue to serve as Persons for Others. It will likewise revive the culture and spirit of Bayanihan as well as enable the Filipino society to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. MISSION STATEMENT The youth will lead self-reliant bayanihan social enterprises whose role is to monetize the inequitably distributed, surplus, and unneeded brand new goods to benefit local communities especially their disadvantaged members.
