This month, we continue to celebrate the culture, traditions, and accomplishments of the Hispanic and Latinx communities. The Summit Public Schools are committed to integrating authentic, culturally-responsive learning experiences throughout every unit and content area, year-round. With September 15- October 15 designated as National Hispanic Heritage Month, schools throughout Summit have continued to pay tribute to generations of Hispanic and Latinx people who have enriched our community and society. Summit High School: Aurora Hermo's Spanish 3 class interviewed Silvia Vicente's Heritage Spanish students on the topic of friendships. Afterwards, Spanish 3 students wrote about what they learned. As Ms. Hermo noted, "This is not a Hispanic Heritage lesson, but an opportunity for learners of Spanish to engage with native speakers, and where awareness of cultural backgrounds and various perspectives are gained through collaboration and communication." In Siliva Vicente's Spanish 4 class, students explored the growing influence of the Spanish language in the United States. Students studied common American terms adapted from Spanish. They also researched influential Hispanic and Latinx Americans such as reporter Jorge Ramos, actress America Ferrera, architect César Pelli, governor Bill Richardson, writer Julia Alvarez, designer Narciso Rodriguez, and painter Carmen Lomas Garza. Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School Last month, LCJSMS's SAC (Student Assistant Counselor), Sasha Hicks, organized a very special event for Hispanic Heritage Month. According to Ms. Hicks, "...the students completed a Famous Faces Scavenger Hunt, in which they learned about the accomplishments of famous Hispanic- Americans and the impact and influence they have had throughout history." Many students participated, and prizes were awarded at the event's conclusion.

Special thanks to Brayton'sSpanish and ESL teachers Awilda Jerez, WilliamSanchez, Susan Harden and Naomi Tucker forworking alongside students to research andpresent this information. This year Washington School celebrated its 10thyear of Hispanic Heritage Day! According to ESLteacher Anna Gomez, "It is an afternoon ofenrichment through culture, language, and song."
