    yAccording to Hudson , Communication in its simplestform is conveying of information from one person toanother.

    y In the words of Allen , Communication is the sum of

    all things one person does when he wants to createunderstanding in the mind of another. It is acontinuous process of telling listening andunderstanding.

    1 Sender related Barriers

    The following communication barriers are caused by

    or related to the sender1.Communication Goals There must be some goal or

    objectives of communication. This goal provides thesender with the basis for formulating the message lack ofsuch of goal can lead to formulating of incoherent

    message.2. Communication skills It refers to clarity of thought,

    correct word usage , grammatical accuracy , properdelivery of massage , correct spelling or pronunciationthat is proper organization of sentences or speeches.

    Absence of these makes it difficult for the receiver tounderstand the message clearly.

    3. Interpersonal Sensitivity lack of interpersonalsensitivity is another reason why communication may

    fail to achieve its goal . Insensitive individual often usea language which is offensive to the receiver . They arealso indifferent to the needs that is feeling of others.

    4. Differing frames of reference effective

    communication requires that the encoding anddecoding process be based upon a common field ofexperience . Lack of shared experience may result inmiscommunication.

    5. Inconsistent Non-Verbal signals The tone of voiceand facial experience and body postures can helps or

    hinder communication.6.Senders credibility- It refers to the attitude the

    receiver has towards the reliability or trustworthinessof the senders message.

    7. Fear a person under the influence of fear is likely tolose balance and his / her communication skills will beaffected adversely.

    2. Receiver related BarriersBarriers related to the receiver are as follows:-

    1. Selective and poor listening selective listeningrefers to peoples tendency to heart only what they

    want . We try to ignore information that conflictswith established beliefs or values.

    2. Evaluating the source The receiver has atendency to evaluate the sender and not themessage.

    3. Perception The receivers perceptions stereotyping ,projection and halo effect make communication

    ineffective.4. Lack of feedback non response of inappropriate

    response discharge the sender of message.

    3. Situation related Barriers

    Several communication barriers are attributed tofactors other than the sender and the receiver. Thesebarriers are:-

    1. Information Overload When receivers are

    bombarded with more message then they can possiblyhandle , they experience communication overload .Therefore it result in poor communication ofmiscommunication.

    2. Time Pressure It can cause poor communication bypreventing the sender from providing adequate

    information to the receiver . As a result ,communication may become relatively superficial andthis can adversely affect affective communication.

    3. Noise Noise will disrupt , distort or interfere with

    the receivers ability to receive the message accurately.

    4. Distance There will be delay in communication ifthe distance b/w the sender and the receive is long.

    5. Mechanical Failure The failure of mechanicalequipment in disruption of communication is too cleatto necessitate any elaboration.

    arriers can be overcome if conscious efforts aremade by both the sender and the receiver . The effortsshall be on the following lines.

    1. Sender ResponsibilityBeing the initiator of the communication process , thesender has the following responsibilities.

    1. Setting Communication Goals the sender must beclear goals for communication . Depending on thepurpose , modes of communication should vary.

    2. Using Appropriate Language since language canbe a barrier , the sender should structure message inways that will make them clear and understand to thereceiver.

    3. Practicing Empathic Communication the sendermust understand the receiver frame of reference to

    understand how the message will be received andinterpreted . This form is known as empathiccommunication.

    4. Encouraging Feedback Effective communication

    can be achieved feedback from the receiver. Feedbackenables the sender to know whether the receiver hasunderstand the message or not . Two waycommunication promotes effective communication.

    5. Using Face-to-face communication Effectivecommunication can be achieved through face-to-face

    communication rather through means of letter.6. Developing Trusting Climate Effective

    communication cannot take place if a climate of trustdoes not exist b/w the sender and the receiver.

    2. Receiver ResponsibilitiesThe role of the receiver will on the lines stated as:-

    1. Effective Listening Listening is an essentialrequirement of effective communication , but itsimportance is not , unfortunately, recognized bymany.

    2. Avoid Evaluative Judgment The receiver mustavoid making premature judgments about thesender and his/her message such judgment , positiveor negative will distort communication.

    3. Provide Responsive feedback It refers to theunderstanding of the message by the receiver and what

    he/she feels about the problem. The purpose is toengage in constructive dialogue and to achieve acommon ground in communication.
