PASADENA PUBLIC LIBRARY COMMISSION MINUTES Linda Vista Branch ���� Apri l 15, 2015

I. CALL TO ORDER/INTRODUCTIONS Vice Chair Dent called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm. Chair Ayala arrived at 6:15 pm.

Introduction of Librarian III Elizabeth Goldman Elizabeth was hired as a librarian III for public services effective March 23, 2015. Elizabeth has worked in small and medium libraries for the past 10 years. She relocated to Pasadena from Kingston, Canada, a small town outside Ottawa.

Linda Vista Branch Update Branch Manager Robin Reidy introduced Deborah Takahashi, a new librarian I from the Santa Catalina/Linda Vista branch pairings who started in August 2014. Deborah recently implemented a baby storytime at the Linda Vista Branch. They currently have five families that attend regularly.

The Linda Vista book club merged with San Rafael book club and they now have 10 members.

Linda Vista had a Granddad and Me program where they built catapults. They will have this program at Santa Catalina. The program will be for children 8 years and older. Robin demonstrated the catapult to the commission.

II. COMMUNICATIONS Letters or Articles Regarding Library Services or Events. The commission reviewed the following articles: The Rotarian, March 15, In Praise of Libraries; Western City, April 2015, Beyond Books: Leveraging Resources for Library Programs; and Western City, April 2015, How Libraries Build Community

III. ACTION ITEM Approval of minutes – Commissioner Bluestone moved, and Commissioner Siegel seconded, to approve the minutes of March 18, 2015. The motion carried 7:0, Haderlein and Wang absent.

IV. COMMUNITY COMMENT There was no public comment presented to the commission.

V. DIRECTOR’S REPORT a. AB86 Legislation, Pasadena Area Consortium

Director Sanders reported that AB 86 was passed in 2013 to address regional planning through consortia to improve adult education. Pasadena’s consortia is a large group that includes Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD), Pasadena Community College (PCC), and libraries, among others. It will offer Adult Basic Education (ABE), workforce preparation, and English as a Second (ESL). Libraries can be of help in these areas. Director Sanders is on the committee. They meet randomly. No action taken.

b. California Library Association (CLA) Conference in Pasadena, November 2015 Director Sanders reported that the California Library Association’s annual conference will be held at the Pasadena Convention Center November 5-7, 2015. Pasadena Public Library will host a social event on Saturday, November 7. For the first time in library conference history the conference will include a “night track” that will run from 8:00pm to 4:00am. Not all programs will have a library focus. For example, they may have a program on home wine making, yoga, literary vacations, etc. No action taken.

c. Southern California Library Cooperative (SCLC) and Leadership Development in Southern California Director Sanders reported that library directors from SCLC are looking at what the cooperative represents and what they want to share. Libraries pay a fee to belong, and among other services, SCLC provides a truck and driver to deliver materials. Currently, members are evaluating services given.

Director Sanders reported that the façade project is not likely to happen until the next fiscal year. No action taken.

VI. REPORT(S) FROM COMMITTEES/REPRESENTATIVES a. Friends of the Library Report

Commissioner Siegel reported that the La Pintoresca Associates are planning an event on a Sunday in September to raise money for a children’s play area. The Associates will provide a list of play area items and ask people to sponsor an item. They have already raised $1,000. They will need to raise $3,000. No action taken.

Commissioner Segall reported that that the tables and chairs at San Rafael appear to need refinishing. She asked for the library’s timetable for refurbishment. The branch was built in the 1950s.

Director Sanders responded that Lamanda Park Branch is next in line to undergo refurbishment. Other branches will be identified with the adoption of the FY16 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Budget.

Commissioner Gonzalez asked if Villa Parke is getting new carpeting. Currently, there are sections held down with duct tape.

Deputy Director Addington responded that the library is removing the computer lab because the community center already has a computer lab. The library will remove the old computers and add four new terminals. The new space will be for reading or studying. They will reorganize the shelving by the windows for adult reading, magazines, and refresh the Spanish language materials.

Commissioner Gonzalez asked if he could be kept informed about the timing for refurbishment of Villa Parke. No action taken.

VII. ANNOUNCEMENTS Staff Development Day, Thursday, May 7, 2015, 8-5PM Director Sanders invited the commission to attend Staff Development Day. No action taken.

Director Sanders reminded the commission that the Friends’ Beer, Brats and Books is Saturday, May 2, at 6:30pm at Central Library.

VIII. INFORMATION ITEMS a. Circulation Statistics – March 2015

Commissioner Bluestone inquired about the declining DVD circulation in the media boxes. She has checked out everything there is to see in the media box. Commissioner Gonzalez responded that he checked out a DVD last week. He was hard pressed to find a DVD that interested him. Deputy Director Addington agreed that the library is not acquiring enough DVDs and need to order more product.

Chair Ayala asked commissioners to sign up to attend the Friends meeting. Commissioner Segall volunteered to attend the May 27.
