Copernicus Lodge Foundation
2013 Annual Report
It takes the dedication and passion of many to care for the Residents at Copernicus Lodge. The strength and support of our staff, volunteers and donors make a profound difference in the lives of our Residents.
2013 Annual Report
About Us
Established in 1983, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation is a registered Canadian charity managed by a Board of Directors. As of December 31st, 2013, the Foundation has ten Directors and one full-time employee. Since its inception, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation has raised over $10.5 million for Copernicus Lodge.
President’s Message
I mention this because new people bring new ideas that we may not have considered in the past, or
challenge us to look at ways to improve the existing things that we are already doing, all of which we
hope will benefit the Foundation and ultimately the residents of Copernicus Lodge. I welcome our new
directors to the Foundation team.
From a fundraising perspective, the Foundation had a good year as compared to the previous one or two
years. There are a number of reasons for this and I think it is important to highlight a few of them. First
and foremost, the Auxiliary once again made a very generous donation of $50,000. That in itself is
impressive, but this latest donation now brings their total cumulative gift to the Foundation, to over $1.2
million. I do not have the ability here to list the incalculable ways that their hard work and generosity has
positively impacted hundreds, if not thousands of residents at Copernicus Lodge over the years.
Again this past year, the Foundation benefited from the hard work, loyalty and generous support of the
Knights of Columbus. This is another group of individuals that run events to raise money that is gener-
ously donated to organizations in the community like Copernicus.
Dear Friends,
This is my opportunity to update you on some of the most notable things over the
past year at the Foundation. First off, you will notice that we have recruited a
number of new faces to the Foundation board of directors. These people are
joining those already on the board, bringing with them, new ideas and passion, to
work toward figuring out how the Foundation can continue to improve the lives
of those at Copernicus Lodge.
Our Christmas Appeal was more successful this year as well, in part, thanks to a number of major long-term donors, who added to their cumulative giving and to an increase in the distribution of our annual Appeal. In addition to making sure that the residents of Copernicus Lodge are well cared for, the management and staff still find time to run and participate in a number of events throughout the year that add to the donations of the Foundation. The final reason for the success of last year, was a very kind and generous donation made by a long-term resident of Copernicus Lodge. He was touched by the kindness, support and care that he received during his time at Copernicus, and left a sizable gift to Copernicus in his Estate. Every donation made to Copernicus is a reminder of how Copernicus touches the lives of its residents, and in many cases, family and friends of the residents. But the Planned Giving gifts stand out in our thoughts and our hearts, in a special way. On behalf of everyone at Copernicus, I extend my heartfelt thanks to those that have remembered Copernicus Lodge, to help make it a “Place to Call Home”. I also want to briefly touch on some of the ways that your donations were put to work over the past year. Often, the Foundation is funding initiatives at the Lodge that may not be directly seen by all of us, items that make it easier for the staff to deliver the care and service that we all want and expect for our residents. More specific items are listed further in this report, but I want to bring your attention to a few of these things. If you are around the Lodge, you may notice that there are new T.V.s in the common areas on each floor, as well as a number of them in key public locations. These are part of a closed circuit T.V. system that was installed with the ability to film things like morning mass from the chapel, so that residents unable to physically attend, can still participate via closed circuit T.V.’s in their own common areas. This system was partially funded by the Foundation, with funding matched by a generous grant from the Canadian Federal government. In addition to this initiative, funding was provided for a variety of different items, from kitchen equipment that makes it more efficient to deliver the countless meals prepared each day, to specialized beds, designed to improve the safety of our residents and our staff. I invite you to look through the re-port at your convenience. On behalf of the Copernicus Lodge Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to extend our sincere thanks for your generous support in 2013. Whether you made a gift in response to our annual appeal; made a donation in memory of or to honour a friend or relative; contributed directly; or supported the fundraising efforts of the Copernicus Lodge Auxiliary or the Knights of Columbus, we appreciate that giv-ing to Copernicus Lodge is a priority for you. We hope we can continue to count on your support in 2014, and beyond.

Financial Report
Over the past years, the Copernicus
Lodge Foundation has strived to keep
expenses at an acceptable level
while slowly shifting our focus from
event-based fundraising to raising
funds through direct mail campaigns,
planned giving (bequests/estates)
and project-based grants. This
change in approach is due in part to a
demographic shift in our community.
At the same time Copernicus Lodge is
aging and requires significant renova-
tions to ensure the building remains
safe, accessible and inviting for our
residents, their families and their
friends.
In 2013, the Copernicus Lodge
Foundation approved a $367,522
donation to Copernicus Lodge. These
funds were used to purchase
essential items. The funds also
assisted with the costs of various
repairs and improvements around
Copernicus Lodge. Thank you to all
of our donors for your continued
support.
We couldn’t do it without you!

2013 Highlights
Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for their $13,000 donation which was presented to Copernicus Lodge and the Foundation at the 2013 Christmas Donor Recognition Evening. This money was raised at the highly successful Annual Father Michael Smith Memorial Golf Tournament currently in it’s 8th year, held on June 15th, 2013 at Granite Ridge Golf Club in Milton, ON, and from the proceeds of a Beer Tent run by the Knights of Columbus during the Polish Festival held on September 14 and 15, 2013.
On December 2nd, 2013, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation held a Donor Appreciation evening attended by our biggest and most generous donors over the past year. The event featured cocktails, a traditional “Wigilia” meal, the “sharing of opałtek” and carol singing with Teresa Klimuszko and Waclaw Bielawa. On behalf of all the residents, staff, volunteers and Board of Directors, thank you to all of our donors who helped make our Christmas Appeal so successful. With your help and support, we raised over $174,000 (a 23% increase from last year’s campaign where we raised $141,000).
Every dollar raised will ensure our residents live their lives with dignity and feel that Copernicus Lodge is truly a place to call home.

Knights of Columbus Donates $13,000
Thank you to the Copernicus Lodge Auxiliary for their generous $50,000 donation which was presented to Copernicus Lodge and the Foundation at the 2013 Christmas Donor Recognition Evening. Since 1983, the Auxiliary has donated more than $1,250,000 to the Copernicus Lodge Foundation. We owe a special debt of gratitude to our Copernicus Lodge Auxiliary who is always busy preparing for various fundraising activities such as bazaars, yard sales/rummage sales or operating the “Agnieszka” store.

Christmas Donor Recognition Evening
“Dad lived at Copernicus Lodge for eight years. All throughout his residency, the staff was the most professional, caring and tolerant that I have ever encountered. Their compassion and sense of humour knew no bounds. We would recommend Copernicus Lodge to anyone looking for a first class long-term care facility for their loved ones” - Mary-Jeanne W.
In April 2013, the Foundation successfully received $25,000 from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada as a result of our submission of a 2012/2013 New Horizons for Seniors Grant application. The Foundation also matched this grant money which then provided $50,000 in total towards the purpose of the grant. The project purpose was to purchase and install new televisions throughout all common areas of the home, including a camera and audio equipment in order to display two new specialized television channels for resident enjoyment and information.
Channel 10 is a live feed channel connected to the main floor lounge. Daily mass and all special events that take place on the main floor lounge can be viewed on this channel.
Channel 02 is Copernicus Lodge’s own personal TV channel and will broadcast daily events, daily menus, special announcements and other news affecting Copernicus Lodge residents (and their families).
These channels prevent isolation for those residents unable to attend activities in person on the main floor, while keeping everyone updated on what is happening within Copernicus Lodge at all times.
The 2nd Annual Copernicus Lodge Picnic was held on Sunday, July 28th, 2013 at Paderewski Park in Vaughan. Blessed with fine weather, over 1,000 attendees enjoyed a day in the park.
Once again, the picnic was organized and run entirely by Copernicus Lodge staff and volunteers, all of whom put in many extra hours of work to prepare. The generous donations of funds, raffle prizes, food and other supplies by Copernicus Lodge suppliers and sponsors allowed us to once again hold this successful and fun family event. We wish to take
this opportunity to thank all of suppliers and sponsors, as well as SWAP, for their generous support. We are proud to announce that as a result of the picnic, over $14,000 was collected for the Copernicus Lodge Foundation. The monies raised will support special projects for Copernicus Lodge which would otherwise not be funded. Though the goal of the picnic was for Copernicus Lodge staff, residents and their families to have a fun-filled day, it’s obvious that this year’s picnic was a financial success as well.
