CDR’sactiontochangethedegreerequirementfordietitianregistrationeligibilityfromabaccalaureatedegreetoagraduatedegreewillbeeffectiveJanuary1,2024.Forfurtherinformation,pleaseseetheCommissiononDieteticRegistration(CDR)cdrnet.org/graduatedegree.

Nine Steps from Initial Contact to Coordinated Program Start
1) Reviewthisdieteticsinformationpacket,thePhysicalandMentalRequirementsForm,theappropriatecoordinatedprogramapplication(distance-onlineorcampus),andallotherinformationontheEMUCatalogwebsite.
a) EMUUndergraduateCatalogDieteticsMajor(BSand2ndBS)
b) EMUCatalogDieteticsGraduate(MS)
2) ApplytoEMU.*a) ProspectiveBSand2ndBSapplicantsforCP:ApplytoEMUasabachelor’sstudent,transferstudentor

5) Beginvaccineseriesfor5requiredvaccinestoapply,completeallseriesbyAugust1stpriortoprogramstart.

• Completeaminimumof1200hoursofsupervisedpracticeexperience.

TheEasternMichiganUniversityCoordinatedProgramsinDietetics(CP)haveaBusinessEntrepreneurship(BE)concentrationdesignedtobegindevelopmentoftheentry-leveldepthnecessaryforfutureproficiencyinbusinessentrepreneurship.TheProgramchosetheconcentrationarea15+yearsagobecauseEMUisdedicatedtocommunityoutreach.Dieteticsstudents,underthedirectionofanRD/RDN,staffthecampusEagleNutritionServices(ENS).Distance-onlinestudentsgainexperienceinbusinessentrepreneurshipbycompletingsupervisedpracticeexperiencehourswithaprivatepracticeRD/RDN.AllCPstudentsareabletogainvaluable

skillsrelatedtobusinessmanagementincludingcustomerservice,publicspeaking,education,counseling,codingandbilling
TheProgramintroducestheBEconcentrationduringDTC371andDTC571NutritionTherapyIIExperience,exploresthetopicin-depthinDTC459andDTC659DevelopmentoftheEntrepreneurialDietitian,andreinforcesthetopicduringDTC432andDTC631CommunityNutritionExperience.TheProgramdevelopedDTC459andDTC659DevelopmentoftheEntrepreneurialDietitianasthein-depthcoursesrelatedtotheBEconcentrationandrequiresitinthesummerbetweenthefirstandsecondyearoftheCP.Thecourseincludesthewritingofabusinessplan,interviewwithanutritionentrepreneur,reactionpapers,andweeklydiscussions.Inaddition,DTC659includesthedevelopmentofawebsitewiththreeblogentries.
TherearemanyBEopportunitiesforRDs/RDNsandtheBEconcentrationfillsaneedforstudentswhoaspiretobeentrepreneurs.Inadditiontocoursework,theCPhasincorporatedadditionalopportunitiestolearnaboutentrepreneurship.Forexample,EMUhastheCenterforEntrepreneurshiponcampuswithanannualconference,businessplancompetition,andelevatorpitchcompetitionforstudents.TheProgramhasalsosponsoredentrepreneurialworkshopsandspeakers.
ThetwoBEcompetenciesareasfollows:
BECRDN6.1 Studentswillcustomizeproducts,programs,andservicestosatisfycustomerneedsanddesires.
BECRDN6.2 Studentswilldevelopabusinessplanthatincludesstart-upcosts,operatingcosts,estimatedincome,andsalaries.
Technology Support and Online Course Information
TheProgramrecommendsthatallpotentialapplicantsreviewtheEMU’swebsitefortechnologyrequirements.StudentsapplyingtothecampuscohortwillhaveatleastoneonlinecoursepersemesterwhileintheDieteticsProgram,andthedistance-onlinecohortwilltakeallProgramcoursesonline.
CanvasistheEMUonlineplatform.AtutorialisavailableonceCanvasaccessisprovided.
StudentsarerequiredtohaveuseofacomputerwithInternetaccess,additionalwebcam,computermicrophoneaccessories(ifnotwithincomputer/notworkingwithincomputer),andscanningequipment,inadditiontorecordingandphoto-taking/uploadingdevices.
Answerstocommonlyaskedquestions:
1) Distance-onlinestudentsALWAYSpayin-statetuition,nomatterwheretheylive.Onlinecourseshaveanextrafeepercredit.UtilizetheEMUtuitioncalculatorontheStudentBusinessServiceswebsiteemich.edu/sbs/basics/tuition/calculator.phptoestimatetotalcost.StudentscanfindadditionaltuitioninformationinthisdocumentandontheEMUwebsite.
2) OnlinecoursesatEMUareprimarilyasynchronous.Thismeansthat,generallyspeaking,studentswillnotneedtobeattheircomputeronaspecificdayataspecifictime.However,thisisatthediscretionofthecourseinstructor.

Full Time Status (BS and MS Degree)
TheCPatEasternMichiganUniversity(EMU)arefull-timeprogramsonly.ThisappliestoboththeBachelorofScienceandtheMasterofSciencedegrees.
TheProgramDirectorandCPfacultysequencedthecoursestoallowforprogressionoflearningintheleastamountoftimenecessarytocompleteallcompetenciesandskills,andtomeetthe1200hoursofsupervisedpracticeexperiencesrequiredbytheAccreditationCouncilforEducationinNutritionandDietetics(ACEND).StudentscancompletetheBSdegreein20monthsandtheMSdegreein24months.
Eachsemester,studentsarecompletingdidacticcourseworkconcurrentlywithsupervisedpracticeexperiences.Studentsareintheirsupervisedpracticeexperiencesitesasfollows:
FirstYear-Fall(24hoursperweek)Winter(16hoursperweek)
SecondYear-Fall(16-24hoursperweek)Winter(32hoursperweek)
Thesehoursareinadditiontoafullloadofclassesof12-15credithours.Supervisedpracticeexperiencehoursaregenerallyduringnormalbusinesshours(7:00am-7:00pm)however,theyareatthediscretionofthepreceptorandmayvary.Studentsneedtobeflexibleintheirscheduletoassurethehourscoincidewiththepreceptors’abilitytosupervisethestudent.Studentsarerequiredtohaveuseoftheirowntransportationandareresponsiblefortheirownappropriateautoinsurance(whichcoversthemtoandfromsupervisedexperiencesites)andareresponsiblefortransportationto/fromallpracticeexperiencesandmeetings.

Aconsortiumagreementisawrittencontractbetweenoneormoreeligibleschools,allowingqualifyingstudentstocompletecoursesatdifferentinstitutionsduringthesamesemesterforthepurposeofcompletingadegree.Theagreementallowsastudenttoregisterforclassesata“HOSTSCHOOL”andhavethosecreditscounttowardthatstudent’sdegreehereatEMU(the“HOMESCHOOL”).
Theconsortiumagreementisonlyusedforthepurposesoffederalfinancialaid.EMUisthe“HOMESCHOOL”andiswherethestudentmustbeinadegree-seekingprogram.EMU’sroleintheagreementistoadministerthefinancialaidprocessbycertifyingthestudent’scombinedenrollmentstatusandCostofAttendancefortheconsortiumsemester.

Eastern Michigan University Coordinated Program in Dietetics Considerations for Applicants in the United States Military
WesupportmembersoftheUSmilitaryandwelcomeapplicationsfromthoseinthemilitaryorinmilitaryfamilies.Dueto[3] possibilityofrelocationatshortnotice,studentsinthemilitaryfacechallengeswhensecuringpreceptorsforSupervisedPracticeExperiences.Wedoourbesttoassistmilitarystudentsintheeventofamove,butthestudentmustcompletetheprograminamannercongruentwithouraccreditationfromACEND.Wehavehadsomestudentsinmilitaryfamiliessuccessfullycompleteourprogram.Specialconsiderationsinclude:
1. Whenapplying,studentsneedtosecurepreceptorsfortheentirefirstyearandsecondyearclinical,evenifunsureastowheretheywillbelocatedwhentheprogrambegins.Itisbesttobestraightforward

withpotentialpreceptorsandletthemknowthereisapossibilityofamove.Itistheresponsibilityofthestudent,toletpreceptorsknowwhenamovehappensandtheywon'tbeneeded,withagraciousandprofessional"thank-youandperhapsourpathswillcrossagain”typeofending.
2. Preceptorsatamilitarybasehospitaland/ormedicalcenterareexcellentchoices.TheycanbestatesideorlocatedatUSmilitarybasesoverseas(whereitisconsideredUSsoil).WehaveaffiliationagreementswithafewUSmilitarybases/hospitalsinthiscountry.Wedonothaveanyyetoverseas.AmilitaryaffiliationagreementbetweenthefacilityandEMU’sLegalAffairscantakeayeartobefinalized.Incaseofamove,whenasemesterisduetostart,tryingtogetintoanothermilitarysiteforExperiencesisnotpossible,unlessEMUalreadyhasanagreementwiththefacility.Therewillnotbetimetocompleteanewaffiliationagreement.Instead,thestudentneedstoseekotherstatesidesites.
3. AllExperiencestypicallycannotbecompletedatamilitarybasesitealone.Specifically,thismayincludeExperiencesneededinDTC371LongTermCare,DTC431-WICandPrivatePracticeandthefinalDTC451FoodserviceSystems.Iflivingoverseas,thismeansthestudentwouldhavetocomestatesidetocompletetheseExperiences.WearenotaccreditedforoverseasstudentstocompleteanyExperiencesoffUSsoil.
4. Whenmoving,itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoinformDianeReynoldsASAPandsecurenewpreceptors.Thiscanbestressful,especiallyifasemesterisunderwayandthestudenthasacourse-loadtokeepupwith.Wecanprovidealistofsiteswehaveagreementswithinthenewlocation(ifthereareany),butthatdoesnotmeanthepreceptoriswillingandabletohaveanotherstudentcompleteSupervisedPracticeExperienceswiththem.Inaddition,thestudentneedstodeclinetheiroriginalpreceptorsinaprofessionalmanner.
5. Inordertoassistthestudentwhoneedstoarrangenewpreceptors/sites,DianeReynoldscancommunicatebyphonewithpotentialpreceptorsthestudenthasmadecontactwith,togivemoreinformation.ProvidingpotentialpreceptorswiththerelatedcoursematerialsoftenhelpstheRDmakeadecision.Mostconversationsofthisnatureendpositively.
6. Unfortunately,ifthestudentisunabletofindnewpreceptorsinthenewareatheylivein;theymostlikelywouldhaveto“stopout”oftheprogramandmaynotbeabletocontinue.Thisisevaluatedonacase-by-casebasisandinvolvesthedecisionofDr.OliviaFordandSandyPernecky,Programco-Directors,onhowtoproceed.

InaCoordinatedProgram,studentscompleteSupervisedPracticeExperiencehoursconcurrentlywiththedidacticclasses(theory)portionoftheprogram.TheCPlengthistwoyears.Thisdiffersfromadidacticprogram,wherestudentsseekadieteticinternshipafterearningadegree.
