Fouling is defined as the accumulation of dirt, scale, corrosion products or other materials on the surface of heat exchangers. This will cause under-deposit corrosion and ultimately increase maintenance and energy consumption.
Traditional Cooling Tower TreatmentCooling towers are heat exchangers that utilize water and air to transfer process waste heat to the outdoor environment. Providing cooling water is commonly applicable in air conditioning, manufacturing and electric power generation. The resurgence of interest in GREEN technologies and their financial benefits are driving the market towards environmentally friendly alternatives to solve common cooling tower problems.
As an owner of cooling tower, you are probably aware of the obvious signs of scale build-up, the growth of algae, the corrosion and pitting throughout the tower and chiller system.
Until recently, the options have been limited; they are often less effective and proven unsatisfactory. The main alternatives have been chemical injections, which are costly and harmful to the environment. Chemicals commonly used are toxic and highly corrosive to towers. Consequently, corrosion inhibitor, pH regulator, antiscalant will be required. All these chemicals increase the maintenance cost, as well as causing premature tower replacement and environmental problems.
Traditionally, chemicals are used to combat the chemical imbalance in cooling water due to saturation of minerals and pollutants from the air. It is the chemicals themselves that are part of the problem:

CTMS© is not just another treatment system. As the name implies, CTMS© is a “complete treatment system” and contains important differences that other systems do not have.
Substantial Energy Savings. Scale with a thickness of 70µm is equal to a loss of 11% thermal efficiency. CTMS© scale control unit will reduce scaling to almost zero and therefore increase thermal efficiency in tower.
50% Reduction of Blow Down Water. CTMS© does not use a traditional blowdown, but uses an internal filter to remove solids from the water. CoC is thus increased from 3-4 up to 10-15. As the blow-down water does not contain chemical residue, or silt, the water can be sent straight to surface water reservoirs or public sewer without further treatment. In many cases, this water can be re-used for other processes within the plant.
100% Removal of Bacteria and Biofilm. CTMS© incorporates a unique disinfection system, which utilizes electrochemical activation (ECA) technology to generate an ecologically safe, activated solution which displays high level efficacy against all known microorganisms, including Legionella.
>80% Reduction of Chemicals. By incorporating ECA technology for disinfection coupled with an electronic descaler for scaling control and an internal filtration system, fluocculants and descalants are no longer needed. Depending on make-up water quality, it is possible to achieve 100% reduction of chemicals.
Significant Reduction in Maintenance. CTMS© will keep the tower reservoir clean. The “stand alone” system is fully automated. Sediments, corrosion and calcium deposits are nonexistent. Therefore, the plant does not need to be shut down for periodic maintenance.
Environmentally Friendly. CTMS© reduces energy, chemicals and water usage.
