DESCRIPTION

An overview of Cool Earth's projects, and the benefits of partnering with us.

TRANSCRIPT

Page 1: Cool Earth | Case for Support

Cool Earth is the charity that works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction

We put local people back in control giving them the resources they need to keep their forest intact And by saving at-risk rainforest we shield millions of acres of neighbouring forest

Cool Earth is now at the most challenging point in its history with villages around the world queuing up to partner with us With your support we can provide a helping hand to each and every one of them to keep their forest safe and change the future of the worldrsquos remaining rainforests

02COOL EARTH

OUR MISSION

Half of the worldrsquos rainforest has been destroyed in the last 40 years And contrary to the headlines rainforest continues to be lost at a faster rate than ever

But it is not too late Cool Earth believes the rainforest can be saved we just need a new approach Thatrsquos why we donrsquot create reserves or put up fences We donrsquot buy land Instead we put indigenous people back in control of their forest

Local people stand to lose the most from deforestation but have the most to gain from its protection As such they are the forestrsquos best possible custodians Thatrsquos why all of our projects are community-owned and led ndash an approach that research is continually proving to be the most effective way to keep rainforest standing

By building local livelihoods we end the cycle of deforestation entrenching villages into further poverty Creating strong self-determining communities not dependency

We are also the only charity that works solely where the threat to the forest is greatest on the frontline of deforestation And each of our projects forms a shield to make the neighbouring forest inaccessible to loggers ndash saving millions of acres of further forest

03 COOL EARTH

OUR IMPACT

Since our first partnership with the village of Cutivireni in Peru Cool Earth has achieved more than we could have ever imagined

With more than 100 village partners throughout the world wersquove put more rainforest under the 247 protection of indigenous people than any other NGO

Working where we will make the biggest impact - in countries on the brink of rapid deforestation - our projects are protecting more than 500000 acres of rainforest that would otherwise have been destroyed

And because we put our funds directly into rainforest communities our model is both light touch and cost efficient ndash with more than 90 of every donation going directly to our projects

OUR PROJECTS

From working solely in the Amazon wersquove replicated our model across all three of the worldrsquos rainforest biomes

Our projects are located in countries where the threat to the forest is greatest on the verge of intensive deforestation

We only work with villages that approach us and they drive the process A village decides what it needs most and how funds are spent - everything from clean water and a new classroom to midwife training and mosquito nets

We aim for each village partnership to become self-funded within five years By developing an income stream which ensures they earn more from keeping the forest standing than they would otherwise earn from clearing it ndash or from Cool Earth

Our projects grow by word of mouth with neighbouring villages asking to work with us too As villages link up a shield is formed to protect the forest behind So whether wersquore in the Congo Amazon or Oceania - wersquore always about putting local people back in control

Awajuacuten ProjectOur new project in Peru works with seven Awajuacuten villages scattered along the banks of the Marantildeon ndash close to the Ecuadorian border The Awajuacuten are renowned for their fierce independence but with their forest under threat from oil and gold extraction they asked Cool Earth to help defend their ancestral forest With the second highest deforestation rate in the country the work of this project could not be more critical
