THEORY OF OPERATION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Fire Door Operator, FDO-A or FDO-B, is an integrated fire door control system. It is designed to interfacewith a normally close (NC) or normally open (NO) dry contact alarm system to control the operation of a fire door. The control station is the standard B2 wiring. There are two (2) models for the FDO:
• A model: A (AC only) model has no battery backup nor electronic speed control for door's descent. The brake is disengaged when there is no AC power.
• B model: B (Battery backup) model provides battery backup operations and electronic speed control fordoor's descent when there is no AC power. The brake is engaged when there is no power.
1. FDO-A MODEL:Door Descent Speed Control is required for FDO-A model.
1.1 UNIT HAS AC POWER & NO ALARMCONDITION:
• The B2 control station is used to operatethe door electrically.
• Activation of the safety edge while door isclosing will cause it to reverse to full openlimit.
• Activation of safety edge while door isopening will cause it to stop.
• Activating the optional key-test switch for atleast 6 seconds will put the operator inactive alarm mode.
1.2 UNIT HAS AC POWER & ACTIVE ALARMCONDITION:
• The warning system (optional) will activate. The door will automatically close after thepreset time delay. The time delay is set bymeans of DIP switches 1 and 2.
• The door will reverse to full open limit if anobstruction is encountered while closing. The door will automatically close again afterthe preset time delay. If the obstruction isnot cleared, upon the 3rd attempt to close, the door will stop on the obstruction andactivate the warning system (optional) thenrelease the brake. Subsequent obstructionwill cause the door to stop for two (2)seconds then release the brake.
1.3 UNIT HAS NO AC POWER:
• The unit is not functional and the brake isreleased.
THEORY OF OPERATION CONTINUED
2. FDO-B MODEL:2.1 BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM:
• The battery is charged, tested andmonitored automatically by microprocessorbased system.
• The battery is tested under load every 30days. If the battery fails this load test thenthe on-board buzzer will sound for 3seconds of every minute to indicate that thebattery needs to be replaced. If the batteryis not replaced within 45 days, the door willactivate the warning system (optional) andautomatically close.
• The door will activate the warning system(optional) and automatically close wheneverthere is not enough backup power in thebattery.
2.2 UN IT HAS AC POWER & NO ALARMCONDITION:
• The B2 control station is used to operatethe door electrically.
• Activation of the safety edge while dooris closing will cause it to reverse to fullopen limit.
• Activation of safety edge while door isopening will cause it to stop.
• Activating the optional key-test switchfor at least 6 seconds will put theoperator in alarm active mode (seeACTIVE ALARM section for detailoperation of alarm active mode).
2.3 UNIT HAS AC POWER & ACTIVE ALARMCONDITION:
• The warning system (optional) willactivate. The door will automatically closeafter the preset time delay. The time delayis set by means of DIP switches 1 and 2.
• The door will reverse to full open limit ifobstruction is encountered while closing.
• After the 3rd attempt to close, theintegrated braking system controls thedoor's descending speed.
2.4 UNIT HAS NO AC POWER & NO ALARMCONDITION:
• The CLOSE and STOP buttons of the B2control station are functional. The door'sdescending speed is controlled by theintegrated braking system.
• The door will stop if obstruction isencountered while closing.
• The OPEN button is NOT functional.
2.5 UNIT HAS NO AC POWER & ACTIVEALARM CONDITION:
• The warning system (optional) will activate. The door will automatically close after thepreset time delay. The time delay is set bymeans of DIP switches 1 and 2.
• The door will stop if obstruction isencountered while closing. The door willautomatically try to close again after thepreset time delay. If the obstruction is notcleared, upon the 3rd attempt to close, thedoor will stop on the obstruction andactivate the warning system (optional) thenrelease the brake. Subsequent obstructionwill cause the door to stop for two (2)seconds then release the brake.
LIMIT SWITCH ADJUSTMENT
MAKE SURE THE LIMIT NUTS ARE POSITIONED BETWEEN THE LIMIT SWITCH ACTUATORS BEFOREPROCEEDING WITH ADJUSTMENTS.
1. To adjust limit nuts depress retaining plate to allownut to spin freely. After adjustment, release plateand ensure it seats fully in slots of both nuts.
2. To increase door travel, spin nut away fromactuator. To decrease door travel, spin limit nuttoward actuator.
3. Adjust open limit nut so that door will stop in openposition with the bottom of the door even with topof door opening.
4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for close cycle. Adjust closelimit nut so that actuator is engaged as door fullyseats at the floor.
