Getting Along…

Crazy Little Thing Called Love By Christo Patty, Director, Human Ingredient

The word ‘love’ gets tossed around in conversations, often pretty carelessly, to describe almost anything. I love your hair. Oh, I’m so in love with this food! My dog totally loves me. But how about relationships? What do we really mean when we say we love someone?

Hamlets near cities will be ‘post-virus winners’ well positioned for a post-virus boom, according to Lisa Allen, journalist with the Australian newspaper. Coochiemudlo Island is likely to be one of these winners given its easy access to Brisbane, open spaces and housing affordability and because many work from home arrangements are likely to remain post-COVID-19. Demographer Bernard Salt notes that regional havens outside of the crowded cities appear to be ‘islands of resistance’ to COVID-19 infection. Thus, home buyers exposed to the impact of a global pandemic and who are now able to work from home may change their perspective about the pros/cons and practical benefits of living further from the CBD.

The Men’s Shed By Peter Kroll

The Men's Shed has been in hiatus for some time, but today we had our first committee meeting since the lockdown began.

The focus today was on providing Council with an action plan for reopening the shed, as Council needs to give permission for that to happen.

It's obvious that, because many shed members are ageing, we need to pay attention to social distancing, but we also need to pay attention to the effect that the shed not being available may have on members. It's a delicate balancing act for us and for the community. That said, hopefully we'll see you in the Shed soon.

You can find more information about the Men’s Shed here: https://www.coochiemensshed.com/

… this lack of overcrowding may have ‘helped reduce our collective exposure to this contagion.’ Commentators expect that families newly suspicious of the infection threat of dense city living arrangements are likely to prefer a lower density sea-change or tree-change in regional hamlets that are affordable and secluded yet connected.

Locations in the orbit of a big city yet safely removed offer affordable larger homes for families to spread out and flourish. More Australians are working from home (WFH) and analysts predict the WFH boom is here to stay. WFH is a game-changer that makes island living a practical choice for working families.

And of course, the best way to get out of the house while keeping your distance from other people is to be in nature - and our three beaches, safe and quiet streets and wetland forest provide multiple opportunities for the whole family to do just that.

Unlike the other islands off Brisbane, Coochie …/18

Destination Coochie By Bill Wight

So, we’re finally coming out of lockdown. I’ve been stranded for weeks on this island with Moreton Bay on my doorstep, enjoying walks through wetlands, along each of the beaches on three sides of the island and on our quiet roads. And coffee was never actually not available.

Others have not been so fortunate. There are a lot of stir-crazy people whose lockdown was really a lockdown. There’s pent up demand for a change of scenery and with borders firmly closed, a not-so-remote hideaway like Coochie has never looked better. Coochie ticks some pretty serious boxes as either a destination or a place to live:

Not so remote and yet could be a world away Surrounded by a unique emerald fringe Sandy beaches on three sides so that one will always be right A highly accessible ferry and barge Family friendly safe roads (40 kilometre per hour speed limit) Abundant birdlife A broad range of leisure facilities Fascinating history and environment A strong and active community Excellent places to stay All the mod-cons A rare fully sewered island Affordable real estate The ability to finance home purchases

There’s never been a better time to visit or make Coochie your home and feel like you’re on one big holiday.

Woolies Deliver!

By Rachael Krinks

“A whole new world of easier living” has begun, as one delighted Coochiemudlo Island resident said, with the start of Woolworths home deliveries on Coochie.

Home delivery works a little differently on our island than the mainland. We have one ‘window’ to order online, which opens up a week prior to delivery. At the time of printing deliveries are on a Tuesday, with space available for orders (slots) always filling fast. So be quick! Do support this service - if we don’t use it, we’ll lose it. More information here: https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/discover/shopping-online/delivery.

Coochie Volunteers By Candi Kelly

I just want to say thank you to all the amazing human beings who answered my call for help for an elderly resident last month. I took a call from The Red Cross on a Friday night who was referred to our Coochie Volunteer group by Redland Council. This lady said she had no food and could we help. So I put the call out on the island via Facebook, hoping for a can of chick peas here and maybe a loaf of bread there.

Well, the shining human spirit of this unique and beautiful island community rose like a tsunami and nearly washed me away :). I picked up bags and boxes and more bags from several people and delivered them to this hugely grateful and emotional sweet lady and would come home to more bags and boxes on my verandah!

A box came over on the barge and an Eftpos card for $100 arrived. Offers of gardening and fresh fish, pumpkin soups and slow cooked meals were rolling out, clothing, chocolate, grains, meat and fruit. That lady will not need to buy food for many months! I know she also feels much less alone. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I felt so honoured and humbled to meet so many big hearted people.

I have had a love affair with this island for 35 years and have moved here the last few months to try out whether I could live here permanently or not, worrying whether I might feel too isolated. Isolated? I was more isolated in West End. Thank you Coochie, you are a loving, eclectic, beautiful community.

On The Hammock With Carolyn Brammer! Interviewed by Rachael Krinks

Why did you choose island life? I believe it chose me and I gradually spent more and more time here till Mudlo became my permanent home.

Have the past few weeks changed your perspective on life? Being in that vulnerable age group, you become more aware of the fragility of life.

As a child I was ... a loner. Mischievous. At school I was given no expectations that I could or would ever amount to anything. Recently I was reminded that my very first business at age 7 or 8 was collecting and selling cow’s poo. I really started at the ‘bottom’ so to say.

What’s the best thing about living on Coochie? Community living: you mix with people from all walks of life. That can sometimes be a challenge. Coochie is like a microcosm of Australia. We have a wonderful, yet fragile environment which we must protect and restore instead of destroying it for our own means. Always think first before you cut down a tree. Coochie has lost so many wonderful trees to indiscriminate culling.

The question I’m most often asked is ... Why was I successful at property development in London? My answer was simply… do your market research. You are running a business not just having fun. To this day I hate choosing colours and tiles. But working out what are my customers’ needs and wants gives me pleasure.

I’m most grateful for... Many women of my age were more often told “You educate the boy not the girl.” When you left school there were very few opportunities available for work. Then, most opportunities were terminated when you married or became pregnant. These hurdles made me resilient, flexible to change, adaptable and never afraid of hard work and getting my hands dirty. Everything I have today I worked for myself. My small inheritance from my parents I passed on to my children who tragically lost their father to suicide when they were very young. I am grateful that I am now in a position to give back.

One thing I should do more often is ... Stop and smell the daisies. . . . /9

On the Hammock Cont’d ... cont’d from page 8

The thing I’m most proud of is... Not so much proud of but ‘glad I did’. I took my children out of school and spent 15 months backpacking around the world, “on the smell of an oily rag” so they say. I was fascinated by the countries and the number of people Australia had on our door step and I knew nothing about them and nor did we learn anything about these countries at school. As a family we were fortunate to see and climb the Buddhist statues carved into the hill side in Bamyan, Afghanistan, before the Taliban blew them up. Laid on the marble terrace at the Taj Mahal for three consecutive nights with my children watching the moon come up over the dome. Something you can’t do these days. I have a saying: It is better to say I am ‘glad I did’ than to have to say ‘I wish I had.’ Sadly there are still many things that ‘I wish I had done.”

What I do for a living and why… At age 75 I am fortunate that I no longer work for a living but the living I made can now be reinvested for the future. The Curlew Cafe was bought by my company Five L’s Pty Ltd which stands for Live, Love, Laugh, Learn, and leave a Legacy.

What I’m loving right now ... Reinventing the Curlew Cafe to meet the needs of the island.

What does an ideal day at Coochie look like? An opportunity to live in the moment, listen to the birds, admire the trees and to sit on our bush beaches and dream while looking out into the bay remembering the happy days I spent fishing with my grandparents, Ruby and Jack Blows, whose little cottage is still standing in Grey Street, Redland Bay.

Book Review: The Testaments

Author, Margaret Atwood

Review by Kylie Purdie https://www.facebook.com/littleblackmarks/

I started this with trepidation. I loved The Handmaid's Tale and I have heard mixed reviews about this. I'm happy to say I didn't hate it. Nor did I like it as much as Handmaid's, but on the whole I found it an enjoyable read.

I really liked the changing view between the three women and the different perspectives they bought to the story. I also liked finding out Aunt Lydia's back story. The little pictures at the beginning of each chapter to let you know whose voice you would be hearing were also great.

Atwood is a masterful writer. She keeps the action moving and the suspense high. You are hopeful it will all work out, but you are never completely sure. Aunt Lydia's voice is particularly strong in expressing how dangerous a game is being played, how high the stakes are and how terribly wrong it could all go. By comparison the younger voices are more hopeful and optimistic, less given to thoughts of disaster. However, even between the two younger characters, there is a distinct difference between Agnes raised in Gilead and Jade raised in Canada.

Having heard conflicting reviews about The Testaments, I was very careful to try not to take any expectations into my reading of this. I was aware I wasn't going to get another Handmaid's Tale. I'm glad I did this. I think if I'd gone in purely on the strength of Handmaid's, I would have been sorely disappointed. If you are able to check your expectations at the door, you may find this book more enjoyable. While I enjoyed this, I don't think it deserved to share the Booker Prize with Girl, Woman, Other. In my opinion, Bernardine Evarsito wrote a book way worthier of the prize.

Poetry

When a Mother is Born

Back and forward across the floor Softly humming, paces the raw mother. No-one sees, behind the closed door, How she dreams of a time that’s other. Dreams of a time, like a foreign shore, when arms around her, with love, would smother. Back and fowards across the floor, Softly humming, paces the raw mother. Dreams of a village; when neighbour and brother, Sister and friend, shared help and old wives’ lore. Lives in a time with one-ness at its core, When the miracle of birth is seen as a bother – Back and forwards, across the floor, Softly humming, paces the raw mother.

Coastcare Update By Vivienne Roberts-Thomson

As the COVID-19 cloud lifts, we’re pleased to announce a return to our monthly Dunecares with the next on Saturday 6 June at Norfolk Beach from 2-4pm.

Working groups are limited to 10 volunteers (at time of writing) as we’re guided by the Queensland Government’s Roadmap to Easing Restrictions. These guidelines, which may change at short notice, are available here: https://www.covid19.qld.gov.au/government-actions/roadmap-to-easing-queenslands-restrictions.

New documentation is to be signed with social distancing and sanitising guidelines to be followed.

Anyone with a sniffle, headache, sore throat or feeling generally unwell will need to stay at home. Coastcare will still provide gloves to those who need them, but we’d encourage you to bring your own, including your favourite tool, although these too, can be provided.

For now, it will be BYO refreshments only for afterwards. For further detail please contact Graeme on 0413352511 or email [email protected]. Newcomers are always welcome.

AGM POSTPONED

Coastcare’s Committee decided to postpone the Annual General Meeting scheduled for June. Based on the best information available it has now been tentatively planned for Saturday 12 September.

The decision was made following discussions with Queensland Water and Landcarers and the Queensland Office of Fair Trading. If you have any queries please contact Vivienne on 0411226363.

WETLANDS PROJECT CONTINUES

Contractors, Bushtekniq, returned to the island last month to wrap up the first of four year’s work with Coastcare as part of the Healthy Land and Water Moreton Bay Ramsar Project. Primary target was the heavy infestation of Singapore Daisy and asparagus fern in the south-east.

As well, six waterways from Victoria Parade North, Elizabeth and James Streets were manually cleared of weed trees while Coastcare operators used the saturated steamer to remove weed grasses and ground covers.

In support, Council contractors also spent a couple of days reducing a number of mature weed trees including Cocos palms, umbrellas and ochna around the southern perimeter. The project is supported by Healthy Land and Water through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. Photo (below), Gaye Richardson’s grandchildren.

Coochie Art Group By Hilary Wakeling

Earlier this year, the Coochie Art Group had some fun and exciting days learning about Eco Printing with Lianne Counsell from Altar Native. Lianne showed us how to select various plants for the printing process, how to make a mordant to boil them in and how to prepare the plants and paper. It was a very interesting process, with some unexpected results, which made it all the more fun. I look forward to seeing the group use some of their prints in collages and mixed media paintings.

The group is currently on hold due to COVID-19, and our schedule for the rest of the year has been disrupted as well, but we hope to be back up and running as soon as possible. We will keep you posted. In the meantime if you need any information on the group, please contact Gail McCallum, phone 0429174818 or email [email protected].

Kerry Burton, 58, Coochiemudlo Island, Real Estate Agent - Team Solomon Estate Agents.

Ray was a Rotarian; I was in Rotaract.

A friend invited me to her 30th birthday party but I couldn’t actually attend as I was already going on a date with a nice fella I worked with at the time. Unbeknown to me, Ray was also a friend of the birthday girl.

I had an hour or so up my sleeve so thought I’d take her a couple of bottles of wine, pop my head in the door and wish her all the best - I was then on my way. I didn’t even see or meet Ray at that party.

As it turned out, shortly after that there was a combined Rotaract/Rotarian Sydney Harbour Cruise - a fundraiser for whatever cause we were assisting at the time.

This bloke was watching me as I was hanging up balloons and I thought, mmmmm, a lot of attention - that’s nice - bearing in mind I was just 21 at the time.

As the day went on, he approached me to go out to dinner, after the cruise was over. I said yes. We went to the Auburn Baseball Club (this was where all the Rotary and Rotaract meetings were held).

I was impressed. He arrived to collect me in his very best Safari Suit with highly polished shoes (he is ex of both Navy & Police Force). When he dropped me home, I invited him in for coffee and on this very night he proposed to me. I just knew he was the one.

My dear Nanna, Emily, has always said to me as a kid and teenager: “You will know when you meet your Prince Charming” and that night I did!

The 11th of June marks our 37th Wedding Anniversary. We have a beautiful daughter Lara, who blessed us with our grandson Noah and along with her partner and her amazing boys, my life is now as a nanny to three little boys and my one big child RAY. Life is blissfully happy and full of love!

Ray Burton, 69, Coochiemudlo Island, Real Estate Agent – Team Solomon Estate Agents.

In 1983 I was at a friend’s 30th birthday party when this girl who was 10 years younger than me and had the longest legs I had ever seen turned up with two bottles of champers under her arms to tell the birthday girl that she was unable to stay for the party as she had previous arrangements. We all had a drink and away she went.

After she left my mate came back inside and said “What do you think of her?” to which I answered, “I am going to marry her.”

Our next encounter was on a Harbour Cruise she had organised for Rotaract.

I chased her for four weeks and she agreed to have dinner with me and some friends after the cruise at the Auburn Baseball Club.

Our start was a bit rocky when I asked if she would like a drink and she said “I am used to Veuve Clicquot, to which I answered “No, I mean a Middy or a Schooner.” We settled on a bottle of Wild Duck.

We got married three weeks later, moved to Brisbane on the day after and started work here on the Tuesday of the June long weekend. That was 37 years ago this June.

In 1987 Kerry spotted an ad for a husband and wife team to head up a company in the Solomon Islands. We met the owners of the company for lunch and 6 weeks later stepped off a plane in Honiara, I as General manager and Kerry as Finance Manager (Google LIAPARI Solomon Islands).

Our Contribution to Coochie over 28 years: we established the Surf Lifesaving Club and the Junior Golf Club with a lot of help.

Love her as much today as the day I met her (Best Mates).

Featured Creative: Collete Tobin

Interviewed by Rachael Krinks. If you are a creative (musician, writer, artist) please get in touch!

Artist Collette Tobin, current President of the Coochiemudlo Artisans Collective, creates stunning paintings using acrylics and pastels. Here she tells the Coochie Island News about her inspirations.

Tell us a little about yourself as a creative person… I have always had an interest in art which I started to take more seriously some 9 years ago when I moved to Tasmania and subsequently joined the local art group. The members of that group were very supportive and generous in sharing their individual techniques. As a consequence, I dabbled in acrylics, water colours, oils and pastels, finally favouring painting in acrylics and pastels.

Can you tell us a bit more about your beautiful artworks? My work is inspired by my travels and my love of nature. The highland cow (pictured right) for example, was painted from a photograph I took while in Cornwall in the UK last year. Other work has a more localised flavor.

How does living on Coochie affect your creativity? I moved to Coochie some two and a half years go and what a magic little place it is, with all the peace and inspiration any budding artist could hope for.

Tell us about the Coochiemudlo Artisans Collective… After moving to Coochie it wasn’t long before I met others who shared my idea of forming a local artisans collective: somewhere for artists to gather and be in the company of other creatives, to work side by side, share ideas and add even more colour and life to this special place by showcasing the amazing talent that is hidden here.

We began this journey with the introduction of the Artisans Alley which is held every Sunday morning alongside Curlew Café overlooking Main Beach.

We’d love artisans to join us to help us make our vision a reality and have some fun along the way. During lockdown everyone has still been quietly creating behind the scenes, and we can’t wait to see what the very talented and creative people of Coochiemudlo Island have been up to. Membership is available to residents of Coochiemudlo Island only. All Coochiemudlo based artists and artisans working in all mediums are welcome.

Connect with the Coochiemudlo Artisans Collective: Membership forms are available on our Facebook page. Hard copies can be supplied by contacting Collette on 0457 328 064 or contacting Merrett Keech, Artisans Alley Coordinator on 3820 7185.

Connect with Collette Tobin: You can private message Collette on the Artisans Facebook page or her own Facebook page or contact her on 0457 328 064.

From the Editor’s Desk As I write the United States of America is unravelling before the eyes and cameras of the world. I watch the Jester President of the United States lead his country into mayhem, violence and death with ill thought Tweets instead of leadership, and I thank God I am Australian. Although our country is not perfect, in contrast to the USA, throughout the COVID-19 pandemic we had thoughtful leadership guided by health experts and a united nation that worked together - volunteers, individuals, communities, organisations, businesses and all levels of government – we all collaborated to keep each other safe and well.

Bill Wight (page 4) points out the many reasons living on Coochiemudlo Island may be the best decision you’ll ever make and as I watch the news, I have never been more grateful to live on our safe, peaceful and secluded little isle.

Due to requests from our readers we’ve introduced a new service for readers who’d like home delivery. So, from 5th June 2020 Home Delivery of our monthly newspaper is available for Coochiemudlo Island residents, subject to a $3 delivery fee per issue.

If you live on Coochiemudlo Island and you would like the Coochie Island News delivered to your letterbox each month, place your order here: https://smallislandstories.com/home-delivery/

The Coochie Island News is free for readers whether you pick up the printed version at our outlets, or download your free colour copy online.

Before I go, a big thank you to those who donated to the Coochie Island News Insurance Fundraiser last month. We have now paid our insurance for another year and we are grateful for your support.

A heartfelt thank you to you, reader, and to our contributors, our sponsor Bay Island Transport, our advertisers and our outlets for supporting Coochie Island News! It means the world to us!

Getting Along Cont’d … cont’d from page 1

... about it. It’s definitely connected with our own vision of happiness, yet frequently we’re more likely to hurt, or be hurt by the person we love.

In the end what most of us want in intimate relationships is long lasting love. For many of us our lives entail a real time experiment which can at times be both ecstatic and disheartening. John Armstrong, author of Conditions of Love, refers to a ‘subtle exploration’ as we create a passage with another from budding romance to mature expression of love.

Much has been written about what contributes to these long lasting loving connections between partners. Without providing another recipe or ‘shopping list’ for love or painting a perfectionist view of intimacy, what it boils down to is this: There are a few aspirational ‘standards’ which, if both partners have integrated into themselves and built into their relationship, have been shown to help love go the distance.

At first glance they seem pretty ordinary. This can be disarming as they belie the very extraordinary outcomes possible when these standards are present and active in relationships. They include:

• feeling for your partner beyond selfishness or self-interest on your part;

• nurturing a mutually positive effect on each other’s self esteem and well being; and

• rigorously avoiding deception with your partner. This can shatter their sense of reality and groundedness.

Some questions for those aspiring to intimacy:

Consider the standards NOT as an expectation to live up to, but a possibility to ‘live into’.

When you think about a relationship that is meaningful to you, ask yourself:

• In what ways do we nurture each other? • What do we do regularly to help the other person feel

good? • Can we include the things that bring the other person to

life, separate from our own interests?

More Getting Along thoughts next month!

“Hopefully they'll have something different to film when this helicopter comes up” smiled Captain. He took a big step into the water. SPLASH! “Let’s get to work” he said as he slowly swam down the anchor chain. On the way down he could see a yellow helicopter sitting upright on the sea bed. As well, he could see the tail of the helicopter and the propeller all intact. Not far from the helicopter’s landing was a colourful coral reef. It looked to have caves, swim throughs, large yellow fan coral, orange sponges and white plate coral all on different levels. “Actually, it looks really pretty,” thought Captain Runamuk. The closer he got to the helicopter he noticed a long line of marine life. There were different colourful fish, seahorses, dolphins, turtles, moray eels – actually, everyone was there but all in a queue, one behind the other. At the start of the queue, near the helicopter was what looked like Lizzy the mermaid, Captain’s friend who he had known for years. She is always getting up to mischief but in a funny way. As Captain descended down towards the helicopter on the sea bed, he could see the queue of marine life swim forward. Six creatures would swim into the helicopter whilst another six swam out the other side. Then the helicopter would shake around, there would be heaps of laughter and then the process would start over again: another six would swim out and another six would swim in. When Captain Runamuk reached the sea bottom he saw a group swimming out of the helicopter and swimming back to the reef laughing and playing. “Actually, the reef looks like a giant playground,” thought Captain. As he got closer, he saw that around the back of the helicopter was Olivia the octopus. She was rocking the helicopter side to side when each group swam in and sat down. …/17

Fishing News

By Michael des David

Winter has arrived and so have the winter species. Dedicated anglers are the ones catching the best fish because they fish during the prime time slots for catching snapper which is early morning and evening. During this time of the year, the best fishing sessions are from 5:00 am to 7:30 am in the mornings and from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the evenings. This is when you experience the best of the fishing conditions, at reasonable hours and with top-class rewards.

Snapper are still around our shores and plenty of fish have been caught. The best baits as always are locally sourced. Provided the water temperature does not drop as much as it did last year, continue to target snapper until the season closes. So no catching of snapper during the period from 15th July to 15th August. It’s important to adhere to the rules because they are there to ensure we have fish for the future. This ensures that fish stocks are restored as this is right in the middle of their spawning season. Last winter the water temperature dropped significantly and the lowest temperature I recorded was 12.6 degrees C. In my experience, once the water temperature drops to 18 degrees C, the snapper tend to move into deeper water and only when a warm current flows past our island will any snapper be caught.

By the time the snapper season closes, the tailor season will be in full swing so there is no reason to pack away your fishing gear. It seems like the colder the water the greater the abundance of tailor. Last year I saw huge numbers of fish feeding on the bait schools. Already the tailor have arrived and from reports, they are an average size of 40 cm. Perfect size for eating but make sure you bleed them as soon as you have landed a fish.

If you find any dark traces in the flesh, when filleting a tailor, cut this out before preparing it for a meal. My preferred way to prepare tailor is to firstly lightly smoke the fillets and then to make them into fish cakes. Eaten with mashed potatoes, they make a delicious meal. My recipe is as follows:

You need four fillets of tailor with the skin on. Lightly sugar the fillet on the flesh side. Place the fillets into a salt brine skin side down and leave

for at least 30 minutes. Remove from the brine and smoke. I don't have a smoker

so I just use my Weber barbeque, a small amount of wood chips or even a teabag will do. Fire up and as soon as it begins to smoke place the fillets into the barbeque on a tray and turn down the heat and leave for fifteen minutes.

After smoking, remove the flesh from the skin and add some bread crumbs, mashed potato, finely chopped onion and an egg to bind everything together.

Season to taste. I add a bit of chilli because I like my fishcakes to have a bit of spice.

Shallow fry to golden brown and enjoy.

Yummy, I got carried away with thoughts of going out and catching a couple of tailor and making those fishcakes; now, back to the fishing. …/18

Captain Runamuk Cont’d…

…Cont’d from page 16

Captain saw that in the front of the helicopter were two catfish with the pilots’ headsets on their heads. Catfish have whiskers and Captain thought they looked like two old air pilots with moustaches. “Ready for takeoff, Captain,” said the catfish hanging on to the gear stick, to the other catfish. “Roger,” said the second catfish. “My names not Roger, my name is Kevin.” “Sorry about that, Kevin,” said the second catfish. “But you say that all the time,” said the first catfish. “'Yeah, but it sounds funny,” laughed the second one. The second catfish made an announcement: “Welcome aboard Kevcat Helicopter Charters. Hope you enjoy the flight and HANGON tight,” laughed the two catfish. Just then the whole helicopter shook and shaked like it was flying. Olivia the octopus was doing a terrific job with everyone in the back laughing with the ride. Within a short time the shaking stopped and everyone swam out laughing and giggling as they swam back to the play ground. “Hey Lizzy” said Captain. “Hi, Mr Captain Runamuk,” said Lizzy. “What are you doing down here?” “Well, I have to spoil your fun and take this yellow helicopter back to the surface Lizzy,” explained Captain. “What? Not right now, Captain! All the kids from the orphanage haven't had a turn yet,” explained Lizzy. “What orphanage?” Captain looked surprised. “Yeah, we take the kids out from the orphanage to the playground each week and let them all forget about their troubles and just have a fun day out.” “Gee, Lizzy, there is a good side to you,” smiled Captain. “Ok, I'll wait till everyone has had a turn and then I have to take it back to the surface,” explained Captain. “Okaley Dokaley,” smiled Lizzy. Not long after, all the kids had their turns and now it was Captain’s turn to get to work. He unrolled the lift bags and …/18

... has its own dedicated ferry service with early morning and late night ferries that allow islanders to enjoy cultural pursuits on the mainland and to travel to and from work at varied hours, when working from home isn’t an option.

There are a range of homes available to buy on Coochie at accessible prices. Vacant land on Coochie is being built on at an ever increasing rate so you’ll have to be quick.

It’s also likely to be boom time on Coochie for day trippers and holiday makers. With many people feeling anxious about health concerns, international borders closed and people not keen to share space with strangers, a secluded island holiday ticks all the boxes.

Coochiemudlo Island has a range of accommodation for short and long stays. Coochiemudlo Island also has talented licensed builders who can help you build your dream island getaway. See page 20.

Captain Runamuk Cont’d … Cont’d from p. 17 and tied them to the helicopter. He swam over to the cockpit to make sure it was empty before he filled the lift bags up with air. When he looked inside the pilot and the co-pilot catfish were still laughing about their flights. “Excuse me, excuse me,” said Captain politely. “Excuse me, gentleman but it is time to disembark this flight.” The two catfish just ignored the Captain and kept on laughing. Captain just shook his head and swam back out to the lift bags and slowly put air into them. They started to fill up like balloons and lift the helicopter slowly off the bottom. Just then he heard the two catfish laughing and the pilot catfish say, “Mayday, mayday, mayday. This is Kevcat Helicopter Charters. Looks like we’re going up. WE’RE GOING UP!” Next thing Captain saw was two catfish fall out of the helicopter rolling around laughing to each other about their jokes and humour like two drunken pilots walking out of a bar. Captain watched the lift bags slowly rise to the surface carrying the yellow helicopter for a ride. Captain looked down and could see Lizzy playing with the kids in the colourful playground. She looked up and gave Captain a big smile and waved. “I'll see you soon, Captain,” called Lizzy. Captain smiled and waved back, turned and followed the helicopter up till it broke the surface. It was back up to the top of the water and his day was done. That night Captain was swinging in his hammock sipping on a pineapple juice with a coconut special, thinking about Lizzy - how she helps the orphanage by looking after the kids. “Now that would be good doing that, helping somebody out.” Then he thought, “Well, I've got my own orphanage already here on the boat with those seagulls,” laughed Captain.

Fishing News Cont’d … Cont’d from p. 17

I have received reports of good-sized flathead from our shores. I have caught three flatheads in the past few weeks, two of about 50 cm and a 67 cm one. The lure fishermen have been catching them on is soft plastics. Because the lure fishermen cover more ground walking the beach, their catch rate of flathead has been better than the bait fishermen. The winter whiting would have arrived by now and I am hoping for a better season of winter whiting fishing than last year. So, it’s a perfect time to brave the chill in the air and catch a feed of fish.

Catch up on the latest fishing action on the Coochiemudlo Squire Facebook page. You can find it on Facebook by searching for @coochiebaitman.
