Convention Success!

We held our convention again this year in Wichita, Kansas. Held at the historic Drury Inn at Broadview, we had the event with no snafus. Our  new  President,  Scott  Woellhof,  was  elected  at  the  Annual  meeting.

He  will  always  preface  a  conversation  with  “I’m  just  an  ole’  Kansas  boy,”  But  that’s  just  the  beginning  of  a  soliloquy  because  he  has  a  lot  to  say.

Born and raised in Clay Center, Kansas he graduated in 1978. He tried his hand at farming in Texas and construction before heading back home to work for Christensen Oil in 1989. He got rubber in his blood starting in wholesale and retreading. Then Champlin Tire Recycling in 1992 began another spin on his career in tires. As Vice-President of CTRI he focuses on staying involved in recycling. Benches and picnic tables, rubber mulch, retreading and buffing dust and picking up waste tires is their niche´. The 48 employees at CTRI plan to help the company grow in Concordia.

Outside of work Scott is an avid hunter and has renewed his boating activities lately. His wife Kay and he don’t spend as much time following kids sports. Their daughter Kaitlin is 22 and teaching in Valley Center. Their son Blake is 20 and playing football for Pitt State.

As the new MATDA President, Scott would like to see members more active and involved and thus more satisfied with their membership. Our members need to put competition aside and help each other out, he said. Put safety and growing the association on the forefront and tire dealers out there will want to come to us.

Employee of the Year

As every business owner knows - or learns very quickly - running a smooth company is only possible if one finds good help. Nearly every company has one -- that exemplary employee who makes things run smoothly, who is looked up to by other employees, and who goes the extra mile to make sure that his or her job is done to the high personal standards he or she has set. This “super” employee deserves some extra recognition, and the MATDA Employee of the Year Award rewards excellence on the job. Thank you to Hesselbein Tire for sponsoring prizes for this award and the following is the nomination from Craig and Jill Aldridge;

I wish to nominate Bobby Bice for the MATDA employee of  the year.

In our line of work, the technicians are often unsung heroes. Bobby is one of these superstars in the business of automotive repair. He has dedicated nearly seventeen years to the tire repair and automotive industry. In the seven years we have been blessed to work with Bob, he has grown into a trusted and highly dedicated employee. Willing to work in any capacity, Bob transitions between tire repairs, running tire service calls, automotive repair, manning a retail parts counter and even answering the telephone. After a long day, his attitude remains upbeat and positive. A leader in the shop, new technicians are comfortable approaching him with questions and Bob patiently answers them, demonstrates procedures and mentors them as they learn. Bob takes pride in his work. This attribute is lost among many of the younger generation. He strives for excellence in his work and repairs are completed like he would want them done on his own family’s vehicles. Many of our vehicles are picked up and delivered in the local community. Bob has garnered the trust of all whose vehicles come into his care. He explains to them on vehicle delivery what was found, work completed and what will be needed to keep their transportation in top condition. It’s not uncommon to have people request him by name to work on their vehicle.

As a small, family operated business, it is often difficult for both husband and wife owners to leave at the same time. When it does happen, Prairie Ag & Auto is left in the most capable hands of Bob. No worries are to be had as he does all he can to keep both the retail parts store and service center flowing seamlessly. Balancing work and family can be challenging. After working a full day, Bob looks forward to going home to wife Mandy and their three children, Lexi, Josie and Kyler. With their support, this family is wonderful to have in the Prairie Ag family. Thank you, Bob for all you do for us. Thank you for striving daily for excellence in your work and thank you for growing your family with ours.

Industry Service AwardThe MATDA Industry Service Award is presented annually to an individual who has distinguished himself or herself in the tire industry, either through years of unselfish dedication and service, or through a single exemplary act of service that has resulted in extraordinary benefits to the MATDA membership.

The 2014 recipient of the MATDA Industry Service Award was honored at the 23rd Annual Convention in Wichita, Kansas, March 15, 2014. Thank you to CTRI for sponsoring this award.

The following is the nomination submitted by George Hoellen with T.O. Haas Tire.

I'd like to nominate Lynn Stockman for the Industry Service Award. Our Company has done business with Lynn for more years than either of us care to acknowledge. Lynn continues to be a trusted vendor to most of us in the Industry. Lynn has also been a loyal supporter of our Association for many years.I'd like to see a man I consider a friend, Lynn Stockman, considered for this honor.

Gary Champlin ElectedGary Champlin, General Manager of Champlin Tire Recycling, Inc., returned from Washington D.C., where the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) held their winter Board Meetings.

The ISRI Leadership Committee has placed Gary’s

nomination up for Secretary/Treasurer of the ISRI Executive Committee of the National Board. Gary currently serves as Director at Large on the Board and Chairs the Safety and Operations Committee.

ISRI—The “Voice of the Recycling Industry”- represents more than 1,700 companies in 21 chapters nationwide that process, broker and consume scrap commodities, including metals, paper, plastics, glass, rubber, electronics, and textiles. With headquarters in Washington, D.C., ISRI provides education, advocacy, safety, and compliance training and promotes public awareness of the vital role recycling plays in the U.S. economy, global trade, the environment, and sustainable development. The election was held in Las Vegas in April 2014.

HHS SECRETARY TRANSITION On April 10, Kathleen Sebelius announced that she will be stepping down after a grueling six years at the helm of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Secretary Sebelius' departure is not surprising given the challenges and scrutiny she faced in relation to the troubled exchange rollout last fall. President Obama quickly announced his nomination of Sylvia Matthews Burwell, the current director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), as the next Secretary of HHS. Although Ms. Burwell was confirmed to her OMB position last year by a vote of 96-to-0 in the Senate, her

confirmation as HHS Secretary is expected to encounter more controversy. Given HHS' integral role in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the Act itself is likely to be as central a part of the confirmation debate as the credentials and experience of Burwell herself. As Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, stated on the nomination, Ms. Burwell "must outline how she will right the wrongs of this misguided law." Ms. Burwell's hearing before the Senate Finance Committee has not yet been scheduled.

NATIONAL TIRE SAFETY WEEK

The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) has announced the dates for National TireSafety Week are June 1-7, 2014. National Tire Safety Week is the annual highlight of the RMA’s year round “Be Tire Smart – Play Your PART” program, in which the association promotes proper tire inflation, safety and maintenance.

“National Tire Safety Week is an opportunity for the tire industry to focus its collective efforts to educate motorists about the importance of proper tire care,” said RMA Senior Vice President Dan Zielinski. “Regular tire maintenance is critical to optimizing tire fuel efficiency, maximizing tire tread life and promoting a safer driving experience.”

More than 20,000 tire dealers, auto dealers and automotive repair shops participated in the 12th annual National Tire Safety Week in 2013, the RMA said. Participants strive to make customers aware of tire safety through promotions, advertising, community and media outreach and free tire pressure checks.

Tire and auto retailers interested in participating in National Tire Safety Week may obtain free RMA promotional materials by ordering them online from www.betiresmart.org.

Member Company Expands !

Consistent with what we have been doing in a number of our other markets, we've been investigating ways to remodel and expand our store in St.Paul.

We came to the conclusion that relocating our store would be the most practical & cost effective solution.

That led us to a discussion with Heather & Cory Schmidt, owners of St.Paul Tire & Auto and Hardcore 4x4.

We have signed agreements to purchase both businesses, inventory & equipment, as well as their existing building. We will be consolidating all of the businesses into their existing facility.

Heather will join our company as an Asst. Manager and her two employees Kurt & Erik will also be joining our company. Vern Hansel continues as our Store Manager.

These moves position us for continued growth in St.Paul & the surrounding areas, by being able to offer our customers additional products & services, specifically in the Mechanical service and 4x4 products areas.

It's expected that we'll be moved over to the new building and our operations consolidated before the end of this month.

...submitted by George Hoellen, TO Haas, MATDA Board member and Past President.

TIA REPRESENTATIVES TESTIFY AT NHTSA

TIA representatives testified on February 24, 2014 before a packed hearing room at the U.S. Department of Transportation on the yet to be launched National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) consumer education program on tire maintenance and safety. Kevin Rohlwing, TIA Senior Vice President of Training and Roy Littlefield,TIA Executive Vice President discussed why TIA was the best fit to administer the program. They cited TIA’s extensive training program, TIA’s relationship with the industry and with the tire

manufacturers, and the Association’s diverse and growing membership.

In an impassioned testimony, Rohlwing asserted, “the success of the program depends on the participation of retailers and TIA has the best chance of reaching the tire sellers.” Littlefield’s testimony speculated that if TIA was not selected to administer the program, the results could be a repeat of the UTQGS program which was a great expense to tire manufacturers and had low consumer buy-in. Former Congressman Al Wynn (D-MD) represented TIA and spoke to the history of the passage of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, when he served the House Energy and Commerce Committee and was a sponsor of the bill. When discussing language in the bill to promulgate rules establishing the National Tire Fuel Efficiency Consumer Education Program, Congressman Wynn commented, “The program was to include two components: 1) a labeling system for rating rolling resistance of various replacement tire models and 2) a national tire maintenance consumer education program including information on tire inflation pressure, alignment, rotation and tread wear to maximize fuel efficiency, safety and durability of replacement tires.” Congressman Wynn went on to express concern that a program passed into law in 2007 has not been implemented seven years later.TIA representatives emphasized that regardless of the methodology used for the rating/labeling system, all evidence shows that a concise explanation of tire fuel efficiency, inflation, maintenance, etc. must occur at the point of sale to maximize the efficacy of the consumer education. In its comments, TIA offered a detailed plan to work in a public private partnership with NHTSA to train employees of tire retailers to actively deliver a concise message on rolling resistance, fuel efficiency and tire maintenance.

NHSTA declined this approach in favor of a more passive consumer education model featuring reading materials and info graphics some of which require electronic equipment not found in most tire stores. TIA fears that the final product as currently designed will not deliver the desired outcomes in a real world setting. The result is likely to be little real consumer education or behavioral change in terms of increased fuel efficiency despite a significant investment in time and public money.
