Thursday March 17, 2011 - Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel, Iselin, NJ
Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Rensselaer Nanotechnology Center, Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, 110 Eight Street, MRC-205, Troy, NY 12180, U.S.A. Creating polymer foams with controlled bubble size and bubble density is an important part of controlling foam properties. The addi-
tion of nanoparticles has been shown to cause heterogeneous nucleation and can be used to reduce/control bubble size. In addition,
the presence of nanofillers has the potential to improve the properties of the final product. For example, nanocomposite foams filled with carbon nanofibers or carbon nanotubes with high electrical conductivity, enhanced mechanical properties, and low density are
potential effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. In the current study, the effects of nanofiller size and filler surface chemistry on bubble nucleation in silica/poly(methyl methacry-
late), PMMA, nanocomposites will be investigated. In addition, we will use multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) with controlled
aspect ratios to alter the bubble density in MWNT/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites. The foaming will be per-
formed using supercritical carbon dioxide. Our results indicate that as the nanofiller size decreased, the bubble density increased by a
factor of 100-1000 times compared to that of unfilled PMMA (bubble cell densities above 1012 cells/cm3 were obtained). In addition,
fluorination of the silica nanoparticle surfaces led to decreased bubble size without changing the degree of silica aggregation and
overall density. Nanocomposite foams filled with shorter MWNTs had greater bubble density under the same foaming conditions
and MWNT concentration. We showed that both the tube ends and tube sidewalls could act as heterogeneous bubble nucleation sites,
but the ends are more effective compared to the sidewalls. Shorter nanotubes provide more ends at constant MWNT concentration compared to long nanotubes. As a result, it was found that the difference in the foam morphology, particularly the bubble density,
was due to the difference in the number of effective bubble nucleation sites. However, a transition was observed in the effectiveness
of the tube ends as a function of saturation pressure (Fig. 1; 2.86 is equal to the ratio of the aspect ratios of the MWNTs compared).
Above a critical saturation pressure, the tube sidewalls dominated the bubble nucleation process. His Biography is on Page 6.

Election of Officers for 2011-2012———11
Foams 2011, Sept.12-15, ———————11
Every once and awhile, it‘s probably a good idea to update
membership on section activities. As always, the Officers
and Board are working behind the scenes administering to the needs of
the section. Financially, the section is in very good shape, with all pro-
grams and our scholarship program well funded. As some of you may
know, the SPI (Society of Plastics Industries) has relinquished support of
the Plastivan that for years helped educate our youth about the benefits of
plastics. Sponsorship is now managed by the SPE, with our section con-
tributing one week of support. For this week, we can have the Plastivan
make visits to area schools hopefully exciting younger students about the
wonders of plastics. If you are interested in having the program visit your
school, please let me know. We are also working to start a new student
chapter at Rutgers University, augmenting our activities at the New Jer-
sey Institute of Technology. Introducing student members to both our
membership, and the programs of the SPE will pay benefits for the fu-
ture, insuring a strong and vibrant SPE for generations to come.
Vinlytec 2010 was a success, and generated money that will be used to
help fund our scholarship programs. Under the leadership of Sal Monte
and Rich Bradley, we are now preparing for Foams 2011 that will be host-
ed by our section. Tutorials, and an excellent technical program are be-
ing formed.
March is election time, and you will be asked to elect our next class to the
Board. Please watch for announcements thru either Constant Contact, or
directly from the SPE. The election will be done on-line, and adminis-
tered by the SPE. Please get your ballots in. May will bring our annual
golf outing, and Tom Martin and Jim Williamson are working hard to
provide another outstanding event.
Last but not least, I would like to call your attention to a change in our
scholarship program. Grandchildren of members in good standing are
now eligible for several of our scholarships. This change was made in re-
sponse to the changing demographics in our section. If you have college
age children or grandchildren please take advantage of scholarship op-
portunities offered by your section. Applying is easy. See Page 4.
