Contrabass Requirements Participants are required to submit a video audition which must include the following - in this order:

1. & 2. Two contrasting movements from an unaccompanied Bach cello suite (transcribed). Unaccompanied meaning written as such for the solo instrument.

3. The first movement from a concerto by a composer such as Capuzzi, Dragonetti, Koussevitzky or Tubin.

4. A substantial 20th or 21st century work representing a contemporary style of composition.*

*Substantial is defined as either a multi-movement or single movement work of "serious" music no less than 5 min in length that represents a contemporary style of composition, including but not limited to atonality, surrealism, minimalism, chance, extended techniques, etc. Please DO NOT submit works that are popular or commercial in style, such as ragtime, show music, rock, punk, etc. The purpose of this category is to evaluate your ability to perform contemporary "concert stage" music.

NOTE: Participant's audition should display a full range of technical skill and interpretive ability. It is preferable to present works by a variety of composers. All repeats must be omitted. Lengthy passages for accompaniment only must be omitted. Failure to adhere to repertoire requirements will result in disqualification.

MEMORIZATION: It is strongly recommended that all sections with the exception of Sonatas and requirement 4 be performed by memory.

ACCOMPANIMENT: All works requiring accompaniment must be performed and filmed with a live accompaniment as the score requires. Piano is and acceptable accompaniment for concertos. Submissions of “Music Minus One” or a capella performances of accompanied works will not be judged and will result in disqualification. The only music that may be submitted without accompaniment is that for which no accompaniment exists, i.e. solo works designated as ‘unaccompanied’ or music originally composed for a solo instrument without accompaniment (etudes, for example).

Both the visual and audio aspects of the performance are important. Please consider the following reminders before submitting your DVD.

• Be sure that the acoustics of your performance space are not too live (boomy or too much reverberation) or too dry.

• Clarity and ambient quality of sound are important. • Every effort should be made to tune the piano for your performance. • Be sure the picture is clear and in focus. • If you are playing from memory, please be sure there is no music on the stand.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CONTENT OF THE CONTRABASS DVD AUDITION:

1 Record your audition in the order listed above using a NEW DVD.

Do not submit a VHS, mini-DV, mini cassette or VCD. QuickTime and AVI files will not be accepted for adjudication

Announce your audition in the following manner: "My YoungArts ID# is 08009999/251. My first piece is (title) composed by (composer)." (You will receive your YoungArts ID# once you have completed the registration process). Announce your entire program at the beginning of your audition.

Do not state your name or place it in or on the DVD case. Do not make any other comments.

3 Use a fixed point of view for your camera with the student auditioning being the main focus. Shoot straight on, leaving the camera in one location.

Do not pan, move the camera, or follow the musician. Camera may be no closer than waist up.

4 Use a good quality microphone and check for good balance and blend. Edits between pieces are allowed.

Do not make film edits within a piece. No sound enhancements are allowed.

5 Submit your audition materials according to the official mailing requirements.

Do not submit pre-recorded live performances, such as recitals or concerts. Otherwise your submission will not be accepted for adjudication.

Include the names and composers of the pieces as well as the DVD track/Chapter # or DVD player counter/Timestamp on the content card inside the DVD case. It is strongly recommended separating each piece into separate chapters on your DVD.

No concertos are allowed.

Recommendations

• There should be short pauses between selections. • Do not assume that our adjudicators will be able to view your audition. As soon

as the DVD is recorded, make certain you view it in its entirety on a standard DVD player prior to submitting. Do not view your submission on a laptop or desktop as it could format the disc to play only on a computer.

NOTE: DVD's will not be returned. Participants should make and keep copies of all materials submitted. YoungArts is not responsible for submissions lost or damaged in the mail.
