HRH Princess Muna is the President of the Council

The Jordanian Nursing Council is a regulatory body established to regulate the profession of nursing to protect the public through enhancing nursing scientifically and professionally .

The Council is an autonomous body with independent financial and administrative status.

The Council is non profit organization.

Board members represent major organizations that employ nurses such as Ministry of Health, Royal Medical Services, Private Hospital Association , Nursing & Midwifery Association, University Hospitals and Dean of Nursing Colleges in Public and Private Universities in Addition to One Community Representative and Two Experts in Nursing.

JNC is an accrediting body of continuing education as well as being accredited provider of continuing education

Article (4) of the Law: The Council aims at enhancing nursing

services in the Kingdom which would amount to protecting

members of the society and promote their health, through

regulating the profession and developing it scientifically and

practically according to legislations in effect, including the

following:

Joining in setting the national health strategy and in performing

established plans and programs regarding the profession and their

implementation.

Developing human resources in the field of nursing to raise the standard

of nursing performance in accordance with scientific and practical

developments.

Supporting scientific research with the aim of enhancing the development

of the profession.

Article (6): A- The Council is empowered with the following

authorities and functions in achieving its objectives:

1. Setting the strategy for organizing and developing the profession.

2. Proposing the policy of education for the profession and identifying

its priorities in accordance with the policy of higher education.

4- Developing Accrediting standards and criteria needed to improve the

status of the profession and proposing legislations to its practice.

6- Proposing the conditions for recognizing continuing education and

certifying specialization in nursing subject to the provisions of

legislations in effect

- Preparing draft legislations relating and approving directives issued

based upon them

The first strategic direction for practice, is “legislation that govern the nursing profession” which requires in its action plan to develop and activate legislation relating to licensing mechanisms such as conditions for renewal, withdrawal or cancellation of license.

For renewal, continuing education is required from accredited organization.

Since licensure for all professions is for life, continuing education is not mandatory.

Bylaw number 74 for 2006 recognizes specialization in nursing.

This by law requires recertification every three years which is based on acquiring continuing education, Professional development as well as having active practice

Article (4): recognizes categories of nurses as the following: A- The general nurse

B- The nurse specialist

C- The clinical- nurse specialist

Standard one; the educational program should be based on need

assessment for competence development to promote the quality of

care

Standard two: the educational program contains

comprehensive plan including a main aim, goal, objective and

content, as well as teaching methods, resources and evaluation

process

Standard three : the accreditation of educational programs

require the completion of an application form ,documents per

organization, a copy of the program plan and course classification.

According to the needs of organizations JNC conducted a

number of continuing education courses focusing on areas

that were not addressed before such as disaster nursing ,

active aging, and mental health nursing …..not forgetting

the council’s main role as public protector.

The council recognized the importance of having

accreditation from a recognized international organization

to focus on quality of education and accreditation

A request was submitted to the American Nurses

Credentialing Center (ANCC) to be accredited as provider

of continuing Education

The Council submitted an in-depth analysis of its education program to

determine its capacity to provide quality continuing education activities for

nurses. In order to be accredited, JNC documented adherence to all applicable

criteria based around 1) goals and organization, 2) educational design, 3) unit

outcomes evaluation, and 4) unit operations.

a teleconference was conducted to individuals who evaluated the submitted

documents. These individuals were currently engaged in continuing nursing

education and were well-qualified to provide a valid peer review of JNC.

The Council agreed to abide by the standards of the ANCC Accreditation

Program and to regulate themselves by taking responsibility for their own

improvement.

JNC as accredited organization by ANCC must submit a new application

before the end of each accreditation period to continue their accreditation

status.

The Council engages periodically in surveying nursing workforce trends.

Example: Through a joint committee, JNC and Ministry of Higher Education policies of nursing education are proposed Example: ratio of female to male students, minimum requirements to enter nursing schools etc..

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, JNC proposes policies such as minimum nurse to patient ratio, the levels of nursing etc..

Al Khalidi Center for Training, Al Khalidi Hospital

Al Isra hospital for each course conducted

other Private Hospitals, Health Care Accreditation Council,

courses conducted in collaboration of WHO / Amman office,

courses run in collaboration of WHO /Iraq Office, course

The Council participates in setting accreditation standards for nursing education with the Higher Education Accreditation Council and is member of the committee for accrediting nursing educational programs.

The secretary general is a member and vice chairperson of the Health Care Accreditation Council(HCAC) which is responsible for accrediting hospitals and certifying special courses on quality
