Office of the President

The holidays are upon us. Giving us pause to reflect on the many

great blessings we have been given, family, friends, health and

prosperity.

Being a part of this club, I have been able to see so many great

things. The support this club gives to those who need it. The

willingness to help and support other members of this club in all

types of ways.

Sure this is a Corvette club but it is also a club of people and some very wonderful people.

I am so grateful we live in a free country and appreciate the opportunities that affords us. One of those is being

able to drive and enjoy our Corvettes, going where we please, as we please in such a fine automobile. Racing, Car

Shows, Meet & Greets and gathering as a group to enjoy each other’s company and our Corvettes.

As we look back at all the enjoyment we have had in our Corvettes this year, may we take a moment and

appreciate what we have been a part of.

My family and I want to wish you all the joy and happiness the New Year can contain. We also want to thank you

for being who you are and the privilege it has been to be involved with this Corvette Club.

Your President

Kevin Reit

Signing off from the Governor’s desk…

Farewell good friend. Jonathan Brown did so much for this

club I don’t even know how to put it all into words. He gave

this club his Maximum Effort, represented us as Governor and

he did it with professionalism and grace. He was a fierce

competitor and beat the pants off of most of us. Once in a

while I would beat him in maybe ONE event but only when his

tires were still cold. LoL

We will surely miss

you Jonathan.

General Meeting Minutes November 21, 2019

FINAL

Kevin Reit, Club President, presided over the meeting.

The meeting began with the Club reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kevin asked for a moment of silence for a past member from the 1970’s and 1980’s, Chuck Strudel, who passed

away.

Kevin reminded us that all ballots must be in the ballot box by 7:15 since this is the meeting where we elect

officers and directors for next year, 2020.

Kevin reminded us the new garments for next year (60th anniversary) are on the back table. We have t-shirts and

zip-up pull overs.

Kevin sent out letters to three of the four charities chosen by our club for 2019 inviting them to our meeting in

January where we will present them with their checks. The club did not invite St. Jude’s Research Hospital since

they are not local.

There will be no Board of Directors meeting in December. There will be a budget meeting in January.

Kevin received Thank You Letters from Okoboji Classic Cars for our visiting their museum, Southeast Community

College for our $1,000 donation for using their parking lot for an auto cross, and from Mary Our Queen Church for

our Club participating in their Fall Festival.

John Salmons with Service One, donated a one year membership to the Bullet Hole. Whoever is the winner of the

50/50 drawing can either take this membership or the money. If the money is not taken, it will go to Toys for

Tots.

The National Convention next year is in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 5-10, 2020.

Kevin recognized Gary Brisbois, West Region RCD and Kathy Brisbois National Parliamentarian.

Kevin thanked everyone who brought door prizes and reminded us that Kathy and Jerry Koraleski are still

collecting non-perishable food for the Stephens Center. Kathy Brisbois is collecting toiletries for a homeless

shelter. JB is collecting newspapers for the HUA shelter In Auburn.

Don Labrie was recognized and thanked for taking our Club picture that will be submitted for inclusion in “Blue

Bars.”

Jayne Reit read the names of Club members who have birthdays In November.

Carolyn Horst, Secretary, asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the October, 2019 meeting. Don Peers

made a motion to approve the minutes and Kris Speckman seconded the motion.

Ray Kennedy, Vice President, said he would appreciate it if our members would keep these Club members who

are ailing in their thoughts and prayers: Jon Brown, Linda Werchan and other Club members who are fighting a

major disease. The Awards Banquet will be held on March 21st at the Field Club. He reminded us of Toys for Tots

on December 7th at Cascios.

Jayne Reit, Membership Director, thanked everyone who had sent her their membership renewals. There has

been trouble with the Post Office not putting our mail in our box. They have been returning the mail to the

sender if the letter is not addressed just as they think it should be even though the post office box number is

correct. You may send your renewal to her home address.

Craig Pandil, Public Relations Director, has six sponsors to send invoices yet this year for a total of $2,000. All

other sponsors are up to date.

Chris Tooker, Treasurer, told us he, Jayne Reit and Sharon Renshaw will finalize the money for membership

renewals tonight. $35 of every renewal goes to NCCC. CCC only gets $25 per member for the year. For spouses,

the entire $10 fee goes to NCCC. We run a very tight budget, and we are working on reducing expenses. He

thanked Kevin and the Board for running our Club on this amount of money. Any extra money we bring in goes to

the charities of our choice. Kevin thanked Paula Eble with helping set up Quick Books for our accounting.

Pete Fagan, Editor, thanked everyone who contributed their articles for the Newsletter. We need door prizes for

the West Region Banquet. He has a $50 Owner’s Pride gift certificate for anyone who would like to use. He will

be handling the racing equipment order during Jon Brown’s illness. He thanked Jerry Koraleski for getting us into

Jon’s computer. He received the order from Race America for the racing equipment we ordered. We spent about

$2,176. The total order was a little less than anticipated.

Member at Large, Sharon Renshaw, had nothing to report.

Don Angeroth, Competition Director, had no racing report. He will be having the driving school next spring again.

He did tell us about his trip to Spring Mountain, Pahrump and Las Vegas, Nevada and Arches and Bryce National

Parks.

Ron Hernandez told us that he has been working with Bellevue University about using their parking lot for racing

next year. Driving School will be held there. Bellevue University school students will be going to our driving

school. In turn, these students will work corners when we have a racing event there later in the year. In addition,

there will be a car show during the racing. Our sponsors can have a spot there as well.

Jon Brown, Governor, was absent from the meeting, and because of health issues was not able to go to the

Governors’ meeting.the first weekend in November. Jerry Koraleski filled in for him representing our Club. He

told us about West Region issues. There is approximately $7,200 in their scholarship fund. They would like to

have more applicants since there were only three last year. They discussed the West Region sanction program.

They are going to put all sanctions in a pot and divide them with the folks who want them. On the National side,

there are 18,300 members. The rule was made that to be a corner worker, you must be 16 years of age and be

with an experienced corner worker. The Denver National Convention this last year had a profit of $21,800 of

which half goes to NCCC and the other half goes to the club in the region that put on the convention. NCCC has a

charity account of $5,900 which was audited. There will be no Web Site contest this year. There were six by law

changes that passed. The National Convention for 2020 will be in Indianapolis and for 2021 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Governors’ Meeting location may change in 2022-2024 from St. Louis. The NCCC officers for 2020 are:

Director of Competition Bill

Dockerty, Secretary Rita Robison, Business Manager Jim Walton and Sgt. At Arms, Debbie Shafer. FCOA (Future

Corvette Owners Association) has a new director. CCC have 84 on the FCOA. You can buy FCOA t-shirts on line.

J.B. . Benedict, Points Chairman, We discontinued putting up points on the CCC Web Site after Summer Festival

so that whomever finishes in the top 20 in social and racing points will have somewhat of a surprise. JB will tell

you what your total points are but will not tell you what place you are in if you ask him at the meeting tonight.

There were about 30 cars in the Veterans Day Parade in Bellevue.

Bob Edmundson, Co-Social Director, told us about a road trip on June 8-13 next year to the National Corvette

Museum in Bowling Green. The track has been reserved. You may take four laps around the track for $75 or you

can drive a C8 around the track four times for $299. We are hoping GM will have the factory open for tours at this

time. Perry Dawes told us this trip would be a work day where we will work half a day at the Museum.

Don Peers was the Birthday winner for November.

Ron Hernandez introduced Kim Hernandez’s sister, Diane, who is a guest. She owns two Corvettes and may join

our club.

Ray Zimmerman introduced his guest, Dan Hart, who is interested in joining our Club.

Ron Bockerman awarded the traveling award for Top Eliminator

CCC Summer Festival Record Drag. Awarding this trophy began

in 1983. We no longer have drags at Summer Festival, so it was

decided we would use the results from whenever we have drags

during the year. There are 34 names on the trophy. Cole

Benedict is this year’s Top Eliminator.

Kevin thanked Holly and Candace for the great food and hospitality.

John Salmans awarded a $50 gift card for a ham from Service One to Kathy Schafer.

Pat Swift won a $50 gift certificate from Mid America Motor Works that was donated by Bob

Reade. Bob won this certificate at the National Convention in Denver.

Ray Zimmerman awarded a free dinner at the next meeting to someone who wears their

name badge to the meeting to Ben Rex.

Secretary Carolyn Horst, read the results of the voting for officers and directors for 2020.

There were three contested positions and the winners were as follows:

Where you have been lately…. Smeal Fire Apparatus

Snyder, Nebraska

The weather on Saturday, October 12th was a little chilly outside but the sun was shining and 30 of us

were ready to set off on our short adventure to Snyder, Nebraska for our private tour at Smeal Fire

Apparatus facility. Since my sidekick (John) was not able to attend, I couldn’t think of anyone better to

bring than my 82 year old father, Glen. It was going to be a fantastic day of father/daughter bonding

(was I ready for this)? We had a great drive out Hwy 275 on the outskirts of Fremont following onto Hwy

30 out to North Bend then a small drive down Hwy 79 to Snyder. The harvest fields all golden and

farmers ready to cut their beans & corn. We did come upon a few of those nasty orange construction

signs but with a small wait, a pilot car to follow, and a bit of diesel oil spray onto all of us we were on our

way. (Yes for those reading this, Dick Mason was the only one who was the smart man to bring a cloth to

wipe his car off). We were greeted at the gate by a very sleek looking silver C7 which belonged to our

tour guide Derek. We all thought the same thing “Let’s get this guy to join our club”. I think Perry spoke

to him about that.

Once inside factory and all the “business was taken care of from

riding in the car so long” oh and we found Louise and Linda as they

were trying to take a different route or find a firefighter, we were

ready for our tour. Smeal Fire Apparatus is corporately owned now

by Spartan Motors. Spartan got its start in 1975 outside of Lansing,

Michigan. In 2017 Spartan Motors acquired Smeal Fire Apparatus in

Snyder, Nebraska.

Our tour began with the basic view of raw materials lying on pallets

within the warehouse (steel, aluminum, nuts and bolts). They keep

track of all parts for each project by the last 4-digits of the serial

number. Reason they do this is they may have multiple trucks being

built for the same town/city & by using the last 4-digits of the serial

number it keeps all materials together. We were told Smeal has

approximately 21 trucks in their factory being worked on at one

time (that tells you how big the factory floor really is). These trucks

are from around the world as they sell to Canada, USA, South America and even China. A firetruck build

takes approximately 324 days from start to finish when it’s ready to roll out the door. At the end of each

day they strive to complete three trucks.

Smeal factory builds almost everything by hand. Those

enormous ladders that you see on the trucks that extend

stories tall (to save your cat from the tree), are all hand

welded & sanded down. The trucks have water tanks on them

that can hold 2400 gallons of water. Sometimes these tanks

are larger when there is water & foam being stored. Smeal

employs many expert welders (which three of them are

female). These welders with the expertise needed are hard to

come by and when Smeal gets an experienced welder they pay

very well and put them through six months of training. Smeal

also has 15 on staff full time engineers that work with the end

customer on truck designs to customize for each city/county/state that it’s for. FUN FACT: Las Vegas has

a special compartment made on its units to house firearms. In case they are sent on a call and it’s not

safe conditions and a firearm is needed.

Smeal has its own in house paint shop area that customizes all paint colors

for the specific unit. Our tour guide told us they have 350 different colors

of red. Who knew! The trucks all have an ‘orange peel’ paint that is placed

on the vehicles which is a rough finish and then they are completely buffed

out to the shiny firetrucks that we see go up and down our roads today.

When the trucks are ready for pick up the customer sends a trainer from

their organization to the facility as they come to learn the ins and outs of

their truck & receive a VERY large manual (also known as Firetruck

Operation 101).

It was a great tour and lots of information was sent our way. Derek from

Smeal who did the tour, was very knowledgeable and answered many

questions which we sent his way. Once we were completed with our tour

he took a group photo of our corvettes to post in their break room for the

factory to view. With hungry appetites many of us took advantage of the

next stop which was at The Office Bar & Grill in Hooper, Nebraska. I heard

the food was fantastic & of course the company was great. I missed out

on the dinner fun in Hooper however what I did come away with from the

days event was a great father/daughter chat with my dad on the ride

home with all the things we both saw and learned. These days I don’t get

many day adventures with him but when I do, I really appreciate the time

that we have. One thing he did say “what a great group of folks the

Cornhusker Corvette Club has and they made him feel welcomed”

Thanks CCC!

Our CCC Story Pat was always a motorhead. We had an assortment of Chevelles, Impalas, Novas, you name it. When

he started our business, PML, we had to sell all his toys. Of course, eventually he started to play with

cars again. He bought a basket case 65 Chevelle Convertible. My brother Al bought an 89 Corvette.

After Pat got the 65 running, he decided that maybe a Corvette would be a possibility. He and Al started

the search that took 2 years. His ideal Corvette was a 62, but they didn’t fit him like they had in his

youth, lol! He finally found a beautiful 64, saddle tan, white interior, white top, roadster in Lincoln.

Since then we’ve had a myriad of Corvettes, held back to the “Only Two” toy rule his wife set out.

We’ve had a beautiful 89, triple black coupe, a 94 white coupe with a red interior, a yellow 2003 coupe

and lost our minds and bought a new 2003, electron blue convertible, a 2005 Lemans blue convertible

and finally a 2012 Super Sonic blue Grand Sport. I saw the 53 Retro at some of our travels and became

obsessed. Took me two years to talk him into selling the 64 so we could Retro the 2003. So after selling

the 64, we had enough to retro the 03 and buy the 94. I always joked that if we HAD to have Corvettes,

that I would prefer the 53 Commemorative. Eventually he cracked and agreed.

Before we joined CCC we joined another local club here in Omaha. The first meeting was nice and

everyone was friendly. At that time we joined along with Monica and Steve Baxter. The second meeting

seemed to leave us newbies out. After that, Monica and I opted not to return.

My brother Al belonged to CCC and Pat decided to join. I refused to go. I told Pat I had enough friends

that I didn’t have enough time to see, and I didn’t need new ones. Silly me! Full time job and three

kids made for a busy life.

I didn’t go to the meetings, but Monica & I did go along with Pat to the many events that were going on.

It didn’t take Monica and I long to figure out that this club was nothing like the first one we joined. The

president at that time was Anita Poss, and at every event, she couldn’t have been more welcoming. As a

matter of fact, the majority of the members went out of their way to include us and make us feel

welcome. Kathy & Gene Gau were new members that joined about the same time we did. But, they

jumped right in volunteering for anything needed. Kathy would drag me into jobs I wanted to run away

from. But it helped me get better acquainted with everyone.

Needless to say, I started going to the meetings, made incredible new friends, and have never looked

back. That was 20 years ago and I’ve never been so wrong about needing new friends. Those new

friends have become a wonderful gift in our lives. Now we hardly have time for the old ones!

Cornhusker Corvette Club has been a life enriching experience.

We are constantly meeting new members, adding to our abundant list of wonderful friends. We always

have fun things to look forward to and we’ve never looked back. Now the kids are grown and we are

retired and it just keeps getting better. But… grandkids have put a little salt on our tails and that is also a

gift.

Christmas by Craig Pandil

And so it is Christmas.

For me, a time of reflection, a time to take stock.

Time is the currency of life, and the one asset only I can spend.

I’m glad I’ve chosen to spend some with members of the Cornhusker Corvette Club.

Around our house are so many reminders of those times.

There is the first Summer Festival shirt hanging in the closest, picked up at Palmer and Alan Sohl’s house after finishing in second place with Tom Horeis for the NRHRA lawn tracker surfing races.

A basement bathroom decorated with wallpaper, towels, signs and photos from the Corvette Museum visit that was part of our caravan to Bowling Green for the 50th Anniversary Celebration. And the yellow polo we all wore for our group photo at the stadium among all the model years of Corvettes.

I remember my first auto-cross in Lincoln at the events center on a squiggly course set up by Andy Schmidt and Dave Ferguson. Like many before me, I was hooked. Now the garage wall sports plaques for years of competitive events, and photos of me competing in the high-speed events at the 2006 National Convention at Sebring. And helmets staring at me, wondering when we’ll be doing auto-crossing again.

And I spy the twisted-in-half half shaft resulting from a temper tantrum at the Chariton Airport auto-cross. Beware of the torque in a Bockerman-built LT-1.

There’s the 4th of July parade in Ralston many years ago when I got soaked by an absolute downpour because the battery died just before we lined up for our spot – and the electric windows were down, and the T-tops were off. But as usual, a Cornhusker helped me get repaired so I could limp back home.

St Pat’s Day parades with 40 Corvettes and parade–watchers asking to hear those powerful engines rev and loud pipes roar. And the very emotional Bellevue Vets-With-Vettes parade where the Marine in full dress red-stripes, white hat and overcoat stood off by himself and snapped off the most perfect salute I have ever seen to honor the service of my family and the flag that has covered several of their caskets.

And now it is Christmas. A time to ride the mechanical sleigh to view all the displays of seasonal lights, some a variety of manger scenes, a reminder to me of the seasons’ namesake. I’m grateful for time to reconnect with far away family and friends, for time to reflect, and time to take stock. Time is the currency of life, and the one asset only you can spend. Thanks for letting me spend some of my time with all of you.

And so it is Christmas.

May your holiday be blessed by the Birth we celebrate and with time well-spent.
