Over the past 20 years or so Ethernet has evolved to become

the standard network technology for the office and IT environ-

ments. The interoperability of components from many different

manufacturers has contributed just as much to this develop-

ment as has the technical performance and simplicity of this

technology. This has resulted in a wide range of inexpensive

and efficient components and systems, and hence significant

benefits for users.

In historical terms, the majority of the Ethernet standards in use

today are no longer that new – the technology has indeed

matured. A quick overview of the development of Ethernet

standards might look something like this:

• 1980 “Ethernet V1.0” standard (DEC, Intel, Xerox)

• 1982 IEEE 802.3 standard: “Yellow Cable Ethernet”

• 1986 “Cheap-Ethernet” (10BASE2)

• 1991 “Ethernet on Twisted-Pair” (10BASE-T)

• 1995 Fast Ethernet (100BASE-T)

• 1998 Gigabit Ethernet

• 2002 10-Gigabit Ethernet

Industrial users have also recognised the advantages of bus

technologies and network solutions. For example, the 1990s

saw the development of fieldbus standards heavily based on

specific manufacturer’s specifications, and thus not compatible

with each other. From the point of view of their technical deve-

lopment, these systems are without doubt very stable these

days, but the user is restricted to one manufacturer, or at best

just a few, when choosing a fieldbus system and its compo-

nents. Switching to another system always involves high costs.

Besides the cost of the hardware itself, the cost of training per-

sonnel often plays a role that should not be underestimated.

So why do we need Industrial Ethernet when the established

systems still work? There are a number of reasons for this:

• The universality of the technology (vertical integration) ena-

bles system interoperability

• Production data is directly accessible in the office environ-

ment without the need for interfaces

• Simplified procurement and spare parts inventory

• Common expertise (operation and maintenance) – knowled-

ge of the use of Ethernet networks is generally widespread

and can be applied in the factory as well

• A higher speed and greater bandwidth create new options

for diverse applications, e.g. transmission of image data or

the parallel use of network resources

• The TCP/IP standard used by the Ethernet enables Web

interfaces for machines setup and maintenance, for example

• Geared to the future (Web-based technology) – Industrial

Ethernet will continue to benefit from new developments in

the enormous IT network infrastructure market, and the

possibilities for wireless LAN applications are certainly only

a start

Industrial Ethernet is evolving into the dominant standard for

industrial network technology. The ensuing added value is high

for planners and operators of industrial systems. With a univer-

sally applicable technical standard as the basis, manufacturers

can combine networks and their components.

Although many applications and also the corresponding

products can be defined to a large extent by way of communi-

cation standards, software solutions and application protocols,

there is still the challenge of providing an absolutely reliable

physical network structure because 80 % of all errors in an

industrial network are caused by contact errors in the broadest

sense of the term. Loose plugs, contact problems, moisture,

broken wires, EMC problems or connection defects are just

some of the more frequent causes of malfunctions. Weidmüller

can provide users with long-lasting, maintenance-free electrical

connections. With traditional products for switching cabinets

but also innovative and standardised components for industrial

networks.

The Weidmüller product portfolio for Industrial Ethernet applica-

tions shows that we can be a dependable, high-quality partner

for all your requirements even in the age of “open automation”!

In the Industrial Ethernet market, Weidmüller is positioned as a

network infrastructure supplier in technology terms. Active and

passive components complemented by a range of accessories

for management, connection, supply, protection, switching,

conversion, amplification, disconnection and communication

functions.

The Weidmüller network components show how we focus on

one key area of our expertise: connection technology from the

control to the field – all from one supplier. What this means for

Industrial Ethernet applications is in addition to the purely elec-

tromechanical products such as plugs, cables and outlets,

Weidmüller can also supply a series of electronic devices

necessary for the standardised operation of a multi-service net-

work infrastructure. A comprehensive range of products for

industrial applications – all from one supplier. This enables

planners and installation personnel to set up a fully equipped

network. Weidmüller can also supply proven products such as

signal converter conditioners, switch-mode power units, cable

devise and terminal markers and a wide selection of tools.

Both plug&play and managed switches for industry.

Junction box and plug with IP67 class of protection form a perfect

team in tough industrial environments.

Stick the patches where you want them!

Use the terminal rail outlets from Weidmüller.

Weidmüller does justice to its high demands in Industrial

Ethernet applications as well. Weidmüller’s Industrial Ethernet

components are the connecting links between Ethernet-

compatible devices from diverse manufacturers for diverse

applications. The drawing below illustrates typical applications.

Industrial Ethernet switches from Weidmüller are the distri-

bution points in Ethernet data communications. This is often a

managed switch with channel grouping options in a central

position as like a building distribution board, or – typically –

plug&play switches in storey distribution racks, machine distri-

bution panels, etc., depending on requirements, e.g. even an

inexpensive switch from the ECO Line range.

The link between the wiring in the switching cabinet with patch

cables to the installation or connecting cables for tough

industrial environment is achieved by way of switching cabinet

outlets . The Weidmüller switching control cabinet outlet is

also available with SC plug-in connectors for multimode fibre

optic cables .

Cabtite cable entry points enable cables to be fed through

the side panel of the switching cabinet enclosure without the

need for a connection at this point. The trouble-free provision

of permanent connections between Ethernet cables is

achieved with the IE-CCM connection module in its robust

metal enclosure. For those applications that involve frequent

movement of the cable, Weidmüller can supply an especially

robust cable for carrier systems .

Routers enable the network to be split into subnetworks

with independent IP addresses and secure connections to

the Internet.

Fibre optic connections are frequently preferred for trans-

missions over long distances or through environments with

strong electromagnetic fields. Again, Weidmüller can supply

a range of multimode fibre optic cables plus protocol-

transparent – and hence real-time-compatible – media conver-

ters to convert from copper to glass fibre and back again.

The IP67 mounting flange plus IP67 plugs and couplers

are ideal for the tough conditions in the field.

Useful accessories such as wall-mounted front panel interface

with optional locking feature complement the range. Tools, a

cable tester , overvoltage protection and a GPRS alarm

modem round off the Weidmüller product portfolio.

Plug&Play switches

Unmanaged switches

Switches are the heart of an Industrial Ethernet network

infrastructure

Lack of predictability of the timing behaviour was for a long

time used as an argument against the use of Ethernet in

industrial applications. However, this reasoning was in most

cases based on experience with early network topologies in

which the network users were interconnected via so-called

hubs. A hub forwards all the packets received at one port to

all the other ports. Such networks use the CSMA/CD method

(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detect) to specify

who may transmit and when.

In the CSMA method the station wishing to transmit listens

to the channel (carrier sensing) before it transmits data. A

station may transmit only when the transmission medium is

not already being used by another station. If the transmission

medium is in use, the station waits until it is free before sending

its data. Owing to the signal propagation delays, it can never-

theless happen that two devices transmit simultaneously. In

order to avoid a loss of data in a collision case, both transmit-

ters must be able to detect the collision (collision detect) and

retransmit their data packets after an arbitrarily selected delay.

CSMA/CD is the customary standard for 10-Mbit networks

with hubs.

Early Ethernet network topologies, some of which are still

in use today, use hubs as standard because the complex

switches produced in the 1980s and early 1990s were very

expensive.

Plug&play switches – ECO Line

The Weidmüller ECO Line is the cost-effective way of gaining

a foothold in the world of Industrial Ethernet. Ongoing adap-

tation of our products to new technologies and the needs of

our customers, enables users to set up network infrastructures

for industrial applications simply and quickly. The ECO Line

products require absolutely no configuration and for many

products even the pin assignment of the connecting cables

is flexible thanks to their auto-crossover functionality (Auto-

MDI/X). This means that they can use straight-through cables

for connections between switches and terminal devices and

also for connections between switches, making crossover

cables no longer obligatory.

A consistent EMC concept was considered a priority in

the design of the Weidmüller ECO Line and so even these

inexpensive switches are fitted in metal enclosures. That, which

makes these products robust and lends them a high-quality

appearance.

Plug&play switches – Advanced Line

When the demands are even greater, then we recommend

Weidmüller’s Advanced Line. In addition to the features of the

ECO Line, the switches of the Advanced Line provide further

benefits for applications in tough conditions:

• Many of the Advanced Line products can be used over a

wider operating temperature range so that applications in

non-air-conditioned rooms outside temperate climate zones

should not present any problems

• Separate routes for signal and energy cables are not always

possible in industrial applications. The optional FO ports

ensure trouble-free operation even over long distances

through strong electromagnetic fields

• When upgrading networks, the uniform component width

enables existing units to be exchanged for new ones with

more ports without having to shift all the other components

on the rail or having to extend the switching cabinet

• The extremely wide voltage supply range guarantees stable

operation even if the majority of terminal devices connected

may have already shut down

• The plug-in power supply connections, which also include

a redundant power supply option, enable quick connection

and disconnection of the power supply when working on

the network

• An MTBF time in excess of 60 years makes these switches

ideal for robust and reliable Industrial Ethernet networks

Switches with management functions

Introduction Managed switches

The decentralised structure of industrial networks means that

many applications require a central switch in the switching

cabinet. A Weidmüller IE-SWxx-M high-performance Industrial

Ethernet managed switch is ideal for such applications.

The IE-SWxx-M switches are surrounded by a stable aluminium

enclosure. Connections are provided for supply voltage and

relay or signalling contacts. Furthermore, these switches can

be fitted with 8, 16 or 24 Ethernet ports as required, one or

two of these for single-mode or multimode glass fibre cables.

LEDs on the front provide the necessary optical indications.

The port LEDs remain permanently on to indicate a connection

and flash during data transmissions. Furthermore, they change

colour to indicate the data rate: green indicates 100 Mbps and

yellow 10 Mbps. The green “Power” LED remains on perma-

nently to indicate a constant power supply. The green “Status”

LED is normally permanently green, but switches to red to

signal a fault, provided the “Link monitoring” function is active.

The Weidmüller IE-SWxx-M switches can be used to set up

industrial networks in such a way that transport paths and

transport times for network traffic are optimised. The individual

network components are interconnected in a hierarchical,

physical star-type network. The main distributor, in this case

a high-performance IE-SWxx-M Industrial Ethernet switch,

represents the central switching point in this network.

All switches from Weidmüller are protocol-transparent. Every

port forms its own network segment, its own collision domain.

The entire network bandwidth is available to each one of these

segments. This increases not only the network performance

across the entire network, but also in every individual segment.

The switch examines every incoming packet for the MAC

address of the destination segment and can then forward it

directly to its destination.

The great advantage of Weidmüller switches is their ability to

interconnect their ports directly.

The following functions are among those provided by managed

switches from Weidmüller:

• Port trunking

• Port mirroring

• VLAN

• “Filtering and forwarding table” with fixed entries

• Selective multicast control

• Quality of Service (QoS)

• Relay functions

• “Address table” viewing rights

• Configuration via Web interface or terminal program

• SNMP V.1 compatibility

• RSTP and RapidRing™

• IGMP snooping with querier functions

Port-Trunking

Port-Trunking enables users to combine two or more ports on

two Ethernet devices to form a group. This group then behaves

like a “single logical link”, but with a correspondingly higher

data rate. Furthermore, port trunking provides redundancies

with a very fast recovery time. If a link in the trunk group fails,

the remaining links take over immediately in order to maintain

the data exchange between the two switches.

Port-Mirroring

Port mirroring enables users to mirror – in other words copy –

at one port all the data transmitted or received at one or more,

other ports of the IE-SWxx-M. The messages sent to the mir-

rored port can be filtered, e.g. by way of MAC addresses.

VLAN

The abbreviation VLAN stands for “Virtual Local Area Network”.

This is a network structure with all the properties of a conven-

tional LAN, but without any physical connections. VLANs are

generally switched networks that can link more remote nodes

to form a virtual local network. The VLAN function enables a

network to be split into various segments. It is possible to

combine servers and workstations into dynamic workgroups

according to their function. VLANs can be set up transparently

and without any physical changes to the network and can be

configured like multiple virtual local networks.

VLANs are broadcast domains that can also extend over

several switches. The broadcast traffic is then only visible in

the respective VLAN. This possibility of completely isolating

VLANs from one another helps to increase the security of

data transmissions. Consequently, the data is sent only to

the Ethernet devices within one VLAN group. Once the VLAN

function has been activated, a VLAN frame can be sent only

to one port belonging to this VLAN within the VLAN. If the

destination port belongs to a different VLAN, the frame is

deleted. It is also possible to assign a port to several VLANs

simultaneously. This type of structure enables networks to

share one router or server.

VLANs combine the advantages of bridges and routers.

Consequently, it is easy to add, delete or modify a station.

Furthermore, the network can have any structure. For example,

it is possible to set up virtual user groups. It is no longer

necessary to assign users to various subnetworks just because

of the great physical distances between them. Servers housed

in central locations can be assigned to distant workgroups.

IE-SWxx-M switches support two types of VLAN:

• Port-VLAN

• 802.1q VLAN

IE-SWxx-M switches also permit static entries in addition to the

“learning” of addresses in the forwarding table or the address

table. These entries remain in the table permanently and are

not subject to the ageing process.

Quality of Service

The Quality of Service (QoS) function permits a QoS priority to

be used in every Ethernet frame. The priority depends on the

port from which the frame originates.

Differential relay

In addition, IE-SWxx-M switches have a relay connection. This

is used for monitoring the individual processes in the network.

The relay signals the failure of the presence of a link to one or

more ports.

Browse Address Table

The “browse address table” function enables the display of the

entire address table or the localisation of a MAC address.

Select the type of search (sequence or MAC address) and

afterwards the “find” function. This function is useful for ob-

taining an overview of all MAC addresses. The ports belonging

to the MAC addresses are also displayed.

Configuration

IE-SWxx-M managed switches can be configured with a ter-

minal program but also via a Web interface at the integral,

interactive Web server. Every Internet-compatible PC in the

local network can have access to this Web server. The Web

server is compatible with the latest versions of Internet Explorer

(5.0 or higher) and Netscape Navigator (7.1 or higher). This

method of configuration enables remote switches to be

configured.

The following settings are possible:

• port status: enabled or disabled

• data rate and duplex transmission: fixed or auto-negotiation

• specification of transmission medium (Auto-MDI/X): enabled

or disabled

• the IE-SWxx-M can also be managed via the SNMP function

SNMP traps are messages that are transmitted when a “trap

event” occurs. Up to four trap receivers can be specified.

The IE-SWxx-M switches support traps for the link-up, link-

down, confirmation error, cold restart and warm restart func-

tions.

The IE-SWxx-M managed switches can be monitored via

SNMP and console menus. The following are just some of the

functions available:

• display port traffic

• search address table

• display switching history

• display switch temperature

Port error packets statistics can be generated for every port.

This contains information regarding:

• dropped packets

• oversize packets

• undersize packets

• fragments

• jabbers

• collisions

• deferred transmission

Switches with management functions

Redundancy in the Industrial Ethernet

Two schemes have become established for achieving network

redundancy in Industrial Ethernet applications.

Ring topology is the simplest and quickest way of achieving net-

work redundancy. The lack of a standard led to the develop-

ment of RapidRing™ technology. This provides industrial auto-

mation engineers with a simple and effective way of achieving

redundancy. RapidRing™ provides redundancy against a single

fault. The devices combined to form a ring are wired like a real

logical ring. As the ring structure would lead to a loop in the

network, one link is logically deactivated (backup link).

The IEEE standard “Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol” (RSTP, IEEE

802.3w) is the other option for achieving redundancy in a net-

work. RSTP renders possible a net-like structure which enables

multiple redundancy to be achieved. RSTP is not as easy to

use as RapidRing™, but RSTP does offer many interesting

options.

Both systems have their advantages in particular applications.

In industrial automation it is often very simple to wire ring

structures. Operating RSTP in a ring of 15 or more switches

will lead to unsatisfactory data rates. But the use of

RapidRing™ in such an installation results in switching times

< 300 ms, and larger rings are also possible.

RapidRing™ is easy to use. Firstly, one switch is selected to be

the master and is configured as such. The other switches in

the network are configured as slaves. Ports 1 and 2 are always

used to connect the ring. Port 1 of one switch is connected to

port 2 of the next switch in the redundant ring. This connection

scheme leads to a logical ring. After switching on the network,

the network is ready for operation.

The backup link is always connected to port 2 of the master

switch, which allows the backup links to be predefined. The

master can therefore be chosen to optimise the network

throughput. If a connection in the ring is interrupted, the

backup link takes over its function and so communications are

not subjected to long interruptions. Once the defective link has

been restored, the backup link is automatically deactivated.

The status of the ring can be interrogated via the Web server of

every switch involved. MIB data is made available via the

SNMP for remote interrogation and automatic processing in a

dedicated section.

The RSTP standard is a further development of the Spanning

Tree Protocol (STP, IEEE 802.1D). The RSTP configures the

network in such a way that there are no loops. Various redun-

dant connections (backup links) offer multiple redundancy. The

switches connected to the RSTP exchange information via the

network in Bridge Protocol Data Units (BPDU). An interrupted

link is therefore quickly replaced. Modifications within the

network are detected automatically.

RSTP is ideal for complex networks with more than one

connection. As several possible paths exist in the network,

RSTP must always analyse the network fully. That leads to

switchover times > 300 ms. Indeed, in large and complex

networks the switchover time can run into several seconds.

A network with RSTP should be very carefully planned and

conceived, otherwise unexpected behaviour could be the

result.

Routers

Routers – the gateways between Ethernet worlds

The two typical applications for routers are:

• to separate Ethernet networks for data security reasons or

to simplify configuration

• to enable an Internet link

Separation of Ethernet networks in the factory

An industrial manufacturing network or an industrial machine

network and a typical office network use the same Ethernet

standard but are nevertheless totally different. Whereas in the

office network larger volumes of data and the associated

sluggishness of the network is completely acceptable, an

excessively long response time in an industrial network can

lead to downtimes and malfunctions. Complete isolation of

the two networks is inadvisable, and for the first time there is

the chance of using the same network for all procedures in

the company. Procedures become more transparent, the

management and technical workloads can be reduced. The

exchange of data is considerably simplified and decidedly

more efficient.

There are many options for isolating and prioritising network

data, e.g. VLAN, QoS for layer 2, etc. A router can provide an

option for filtering the data on the IP layer (layer 3).

Features such as integral firewall, Network Address Translation

(NAT), Port Address Translation (PAT) and remote access via a

modem turn such a router into an efficient aid for achieving

separation between networks.

Only authorised users can access the protected network from

outside and only certain, enabled devices can transmit data

out of the protected network. The NAT/PAT feature enables

a machine with its own IP subnetwork and several network

users to remain concealed from the outside world behind a

unique IP address. Access routines to the IP address from

outside are automatically forwarded to a predefined IP address

in the network behind the router. In this way the device can

remain accessible from outside but only as required. The

option of concealing a complete machine behind an IP address

reduces the installation and management workloads for the

machine user.

In addition, the router can be selected via an external modem,

thus enabling access to the router and the machine beyond,

without compromising the corporate network. Such access

routines are carried out via PPP and PAP or Callback with

Virtual Private Network (VPN). This means that a high security

level can always be guaranteed.

Connection to the Internet

The two industrial access routers IE-AR-10T and IE-AR-10T

ISDN enable users to create a simple and secure link between

Industrial Ethernet networks and the worldwide Internet.

The integral analogue or ISDN modem guarantees users world-

wide applicability and availability. External modems (ISDN,

GSM, analogue) can be easily connected via an RS232 port.

An integral firewall provides users with maximum possible

protection for their systems. Programming/configuration is

carried out via a browser or text console/SSH, but notebooks

or handhelds can be used as well, of course. Separate

configuration software is not required because this is integrated

into the device itself.

The software can be updated via teleservicing. Functions such

as VPN, DynDNS and Callback are included as standard.

GPRS

GPRS alarm modem

Signalling, warning, teleservicing – that is the application range

of the Weidmüller IE-GPRS-I/O alarm modem. Every IE-GPRS-

I/O includes a microprocessor with a GPRS/GSM transmission

module. The IE-GPRS-I/O is interesting for those users who

wish to have data from a plant available for mobile applications

or in the Internet. For example:

• You need to be able to call up your plant data at any time,

even from remote locations. You can choose to receive an

SMS, a fax or an e-mail

• You need your engineers to be informed about certain

plant statuses, even when there is nobody on site. The

IE-GPRS-I/O can, for example, send an SMS or call one

or more engineers automatically once certain plant statuses

have been reached

• You need not only information about your plant, but also

need to intervene in plant operations at all times from virtually

any location in the world. The IE-GPRS-I/O gives you access

to your plant at any time via the integral RS232 port

• You need data from a plant that is not connected via a

telephone or a network. The IE-GPRS-I/O can be located

anywhere where GSM mobile telephone reception is

guaranteed, even at locations remote from your plant

Furthermore, the IE-GPRS-I/O provides the option of setting

up a leased line for one of the inexpensive M2M rates. This

makes, for example, central data loggers with Internet connec-

tion interesting, which replace expensive in situ data loggers

and can be called up at any time via secure Internet access

routines. The innovative GSM/GPRS technology also saves

the cost of installing a telephone connection and the cost of

the calls.

In modern factories it is very often the case that just a few

employees are responsible for operating and monitoring a

great number of machines and facilities. GPRS is a trans-

mission technology that enables all facilities to remain online

permanently. So no matter where your staff are, the machines

are always accessible.

IE-GPRS-I/O is also interesting for machine and plant manufac-

turers. Mobile access to the machines enables them to carry

out quick and efficient maintenance for their customers and

makes them less dependent on the skills of the operating

personnel. Indeed, it is often no longer necessary to employ

an engineer on site. The cost benefits of this aspect alone

pays back the cost of the IE-GPRS-I/O in just a short time,

not even counting the advantages of the better service and

the associated boost for customer loyalty.

Like the majority of our active communication devices, the

IE-GPRS-I/O is also supplied in a robust metal enclosure which

provides not only additional protection against electromagnetic

radiation, but also emphasises the high-quality appearance of

your cabinet.

Introduction Media converters

The use of fibre optics is advisable when reliability demands

are high or there are long distances to cover. The two media

converters IE-MC-SC and IE-MC-ST can provide a simple and

cost-effective solution. Both convert an RJ45 port to an optical

port, using SC or ST fibre optic connectors.

The supply voltage can be designed as a redundant system

and therefore provides users with high fail-safe security. The

conversion of RJ45 copper ports to SC or ST fibre optic ports

can be set transparently.

Weidmüller Industrial Ethernet media converters provide a

solution for industrial applications that require a highly reliable,

robust data exchange between copper and glass fibre media.

Media converters are cost-effective devices and give users the

option of integrating fibre optics into their networks. The

Weidmüller media converters are real-time-compatible and

remain transparent in the network.

Introduction

Industrial Ethernet – passive components

Although many applications and also the corresponding

products can be defined to a large extent by way of communi-

cation standards, software solutions and application protocols,

there is still the challenge of providing an absolutely reliable

physical network structure because 80 % of all errors in an

industrial network are caused by contact errors in the broadest

sense of the term.

Loose plugs, contact problems, moisture, broken wires, EMC

problems or connection defects are just some of the more

frequent causes of malfunctions. Weidmüller can provide users

with long-lasting, maintenance-free electrical connections. With

traditional products for switching cabinets but also innovative

and standardised components for industrial networks. The

Weidmüller network components show how we focus on one

key area of our expertise:

Connection technology from the control to the field – all from

one supplier. What this means for Industrial Ethernet appli-

cations is in addition to the purely electromechanical products

such as plugs, cables and outlets, Weidmüller can also supply

a series of electronic devices necessary for the standardised

operation of a multi-service network infrastructure.

A comprehensive range of products for industrial applications –

all from one supplier. This enables planners and installation

personnel to set up a fully equipped network. Weidmüller can

also supply proven products such as signal converters, switch-

mode power units, cable markers and tools.

The Weidmüller product portfolio for Industrial Ethernet appli-

cations shows that we can be a dependable, high-quality

partner for all your requirements, even in the age of “open

automation”!

The cabling concept for Industrial Ethernet is not based on any

particular service and can be used with and without patch

technology depending on the application. Both copper and

fibre optic cables can be used as media, but the backbone

cabling is preferably glass fibre. Therefore, Weidmüller can

provide 2-fibre multimode cables in PVC which can be ordered

pre-assembled with SC duplex or ST connectors in standard

lengths or to customer specification. We distinguish here

between zipcord cables for the cabinet and breakout cables

for the field. You are therefore spared the work of having to

assemble fibre optic cables in the field.

The backbone cabling is installed in a star layout and, depen-

ding on requirements regarding plant availability and security,

also in a redundant form as a ring with our switches. In doing

so, the backbone cabling extends not only as far as the storey

distribution rack, but instead as far as the machine distribution

panels. From here to the machine outlets, the connections are

preferably made with universal, solid copper cables. This is

where, as a rule, the universal, structured industrial cabling

ends – irrespective of service or application. For the cables and

components of these installations, Weidmüller not only takes

into account existing standards such as ISO/IEC 11801:2002

and EN 50173-1:2003 for the building and office cabling, but

also the draft standards (2004) ISO/IEC 24702 or EN 50173-3

covering industrial cabling.

Introduction

An intrinsic part of our cabling concept is the fact that all our

patch, installation and connecting cables are constructed with

four wire pairs plus shield in order to enable Gigabit Ethernet

and, for example, “Power over Ethernet”, because Weidmüller

places a high priority on good flexibility and security for your

investments.

The Weidmüller range of copper cables includes Cat.5 and

Cat.6 connection components, patch cables, solid installation

and flexible connecting cables plus sheathing in FRNC, PVC

and PUR for setting up class D and E transmission paths

depending on application and investment security. Of course,

transmission paths can also make use of glass fibre to protect

against electromagnetic interference. The FRNC patch cables

for distribution boards and switching cabinets are flame-

retardant and do not produce any corrosive gases or acids

upon contact with extinguishing water. Furthermore, their

RJ45 connectors include a solid, moulded anti-kink sleeve

and locking lever guard. The PVC field cables are flexible and

are suitable for a wide temperature range. The PUR field cables

are popular because of their extreme flexibility, oil resistance

and abrasion resistance. To ensure that cables for cabinet and

field wiring are not confused, they are colour-coded: light grey

for the cabinet, green for the field.

The copper conductor cross-sections, core and sheathing

diameters of the AWG 26, AWG 24 and AWG 23 cables

match our connection components. Therefore, when choosing

your components you won’t have to search long in order to

find a coordinated Industrial Ethernet wiring system. Weidmüller

is the only address you need for setting up your network!

Our connection components are based on fully shielded core

products such as RJ45 plugs and sockets, which enable you

to assemble your cables in the field. In a range from AWG 27

to AWG 24 with the RJ45 plug and from AWG 26 to AWG 22

with the RJ45 socket. In particular, our crimping tools help you

to create secure, gas-tight connections in no time at all.

Patch technology is preferred in order to simplify modifications.

Here, a solid installation cable (AWG 23/1 or AWG 24/1) is

connected to our RJ45 socket by means of the IDC principle

for permanent installations. The RJ45 sockets are preferably

included in the cabinet as part of a patch panel and in the field

as a junction box. Our terminal rail and machine outlets are

distinguished by their simple mounting and space-saving

designs.

The Weidmüller AWG 26/7 flexible connecting cables suitable

for occasional movement are always connected via RJ45

plugs. The RJ45 plugs and sockets comply with class of

protection IP20 and IP67 depending on the application.

Products complying with ingress protection class IP67 include

a locking clip that protects against unintentional opening.

Introduction

Choosing a class D/Cat.5 connection means that you can

cover the majority of existing and future data transmission

requirements. Furthermore, class E/Cat.6 or F/Cat.7 provide

you with a cost-effective, downward-compatible solution to

cover the anticipated performance increases in automation

technology over the coming years – and thus protect your

investments. On the other hand, it gives you better plant availa-

bility right away by providing reserves of capacity based on our

more robust connection technology, e.g. in the case of excessi-

ve segment lengths, electromagnetic interference or potential

errors during field assembly. If you wish

to connect (lengthen, repair) two installation cables (in sizes

AWG 24 to AWG 22), this is no problem for Weidmüller

because we can supply you with LSA (= no solder, no screw,

no strip) IE-CCM installation cable connectors for Cat.7. Of

course, you can also use class D/Cat.5 to supplement class

E/Cat.6 for machine and application areas or, alternatively, in

production areas. Our mounting flange with RJ45 coupling

enables the direct interconnection of patch and system cables

without having to feed the system cable through the cabinet

wall and then seal it. Simply click into place and that’s it!

Of course, Weidmüller can also supply pre-assembled system

cables so that you can concentrate on your own core skills.

The IE-CT cable and connection testing system detects instal-

lation errors such as short-circuits or wrongly connected lines

quickly and reliably. A 7-segment display indicates the type of

fault. The front panel interface – a cable entry complying with

the high IP65 class of protection – includes a connection for

the Ethernet network in addition to various data ports. This

therefore enables a quick connection, e.g. for diagnosis

purposes, to the internal workings of the cabinet without even

having to open the door! Weidmüller can of course also supply

the tools you need to install your network – including the TT 8

RS MP 8 pressing tool for crimping the shielded RJ45 plug in

class of protection IP20, the AM 12

sheathing stripping tool and the PDT indentation tool required

for the IDCs of the IE-CCM cable connection module. The

Weidmüller range also includes power supply units, cabinet

entry points and marking solutions.

Overview – copper cables

Cables for Industrial Ethernet – copper cables

Weidmüller can also supply a range of cables to match the

connection components, a true to Weidmüller’s commitment

to the future, also in 8-core, i.e. 4-pair, versions for multi-

service Ethernet networks.

Industrial patch cables

Our IE-6PC class E/Cat.6 patch cables with FRNC sheathing in

light grey (RAL 7035), wired 1:1, are used in the distribution

board or switching cabinet to connect installation cables to

switches, media converters or similar components. Here, the

flexible cord itself already complies with S/FTP Cat.7, 600 MHz

4 x 2 x AWG 27/7, providing excellent transmission charac-

teristics and high capacity reserves. The cables flame retardant

sheathing is halogen free. Weidmüller patch cables have a

moulded RJ45 plug that provides kink protection and guaran-

tees good strain relief, which means that the electrical contact

points are never subjected to any mechanical forces, whilst the

moulded cover over the locking lever prevents unintentional

damage to the lever during installation. Patch cables can be

supplied in six different standard lengths between 0.5 and 10 m,

with the length printed on the anti-kink sleeve. Furthermore,

Weidmüller can also provide crossover patch cables for inter-

connecting terminal equipment. In order to be able to distin-

guish crossover from 1:1-wired cables, the crossover cables

are fitted with a yellow anti-kink sleeve.

Weidmüller patch cables are suitable for operating tempera-

tures up to 60 °C.

Industrial installation cables (horizontal cables)

Weidmüller can supply 100, 500 and 1000 m coils of Cat.7

and Cat.5 installation cables with green (RAL 6018) PVC or

zero-halogen PUR sheathing (to IEC 60754-2) for permanent

installations in buildings. The 4-pair cables can be used with all

customary Ethernet protocols up to Gigabit and beyond.

Weidmüller installation cables are easily fitted with RJ45

sockets at both ends and thanks to their single-core

AWG 23/1 internal conductor can be used for transmission

distances of – theoretically – up to 115 m. However, we

recommend sticking to the “90 m rule” (see EN 50173-1)

for installation cables as well in order to be able to exploit fully

the transmission performance of future systems.

Weidmüller installation cables are suitable for operating tem-

peratures up to 75 °C.

Industrial connecting cables

Weidmüller can also supply 100 m rings of Cat.7 and Cat.5

connecting cables, again with PVC or zero-halogen PUR shea-

thing, for connecting movable equipment in the field. The con-

nected values of these 8-core connecting cables (in sizes

AWG 26 to AWG 2) match those of the RJ45 plugs, which

means that these cables can be combined with all plug and

socket variations.

Weidmüller connecting cables are suitable for operating tem-

peratures up to 75 °C.

Overview – copper cables

Industrial system cables

If you do not wish to assemble the industrial connecting cables

for your machines and equipment yourself, Weidmüller has a

range of pre-assembled connecting cables at your disposal in

standard lengths of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 15 m. Lengths to customer

specification on request. If required, the pre-assembled cables

can be ordered with IP20 and IP67 plugs – even combined

assemblies can be found on the following pages.

Industrial connecting cables suitable for cable carriers

For those applications in which cables are subjected to

frequent movements, we recommend our cable carrier-

compatible industrial connecting cables. Here again, you

can choose between a 100 m ring or pre-assembled cables

with IP67 plugs in various lengths.

Overview – Fibre optic cables

Fibre optic cables

True to the idea of “one-stop shopping”, Weidmüller can also

supply fibre optic connecting cables. Besides FO patch cables,

based on multimode zipcord cables with 50 and 62.5 μm fibre

diameters, a system cable for (breakout cable) tough field

installations rounds off our range. We can also supply prefabri-

cated single-mode cables on request.

All the FO cables from Weidmüller can be supplied with SC

duplex or ST connectors. Lengths to customer specification on

request.

Introduction

Industrial Ethernet – accessories

Although when selecting an Industrial Ethernet network it is

the actual network components that are your first priority,

trouble-free installation and efficient operation of a network

often requires other components that are not actually part of

the network infrastructure itself. In keeping with the Weidmüller

concept of “one-stop shopping”, we have created a range of

useful accessories to complement our Industrial Ethernet

portfolio and to make it easier for you to use the Weidmüller

network infrastructure components.

For example, the Weidmüller cable tester, which allows you to

localise connection errors quickly and also indicates whether

cables have been wrongly connected, are still unconnected or

prohibited connections exist.

The front panel interface, a cable entry point with IP65 ingress

protection classification, provides you not only with reliable

access to various data interfaces, but also with a connection to

the Ethernet network without even having to open the cabinet

door!

In addition to power supply units, tools and marking solutions,

a network also requires highly dependable modules to protect

against overvoltages.

Glossary

Interest in Industrial Ethernet has produced an entirely new

dictionary with specialist terms. Some of the most important

terms are briefly explained here.

4B/5B

A block encoding system for FDDI and ATM. In 4B/5B

encoding, all data is divided into 4-bit units (a nibble) and

converted to 5-bit units (symbols) by reference to a matrix.

10BaseT

Standard IEEE Ethernet cabling system, where in contrast

to 10Base2 and 10Base5 no bus coaxial cable is used, but

each station has a star connection around the hubs using a

100 ohm UTP-cable. Despite this 10BaseT is restricted to

10 Mbps and permits cable lengths of up 100 m between

station and hub.

10BaseFL

Ethernet cable system using fibre optic cable. 10BaseFL

represents all the functions for data transmission from a

FOMAU to an active star coupler and connections between

star couplers. Data is transmitted asynchronously and is

downwardly compatible to the FOIRL standard. The maximum

length of a 10Base-FL segment is 2000 m. The normal

Ethernet repeater rules apply when reinforcing the signals via

repeaters (a maximum of four repeaters in a single cascade).

Terminal equipment is connected to 10BaseFL cable directly

via optical ethernet adapters or external FOMAU transceivers

(via an AUI interface).

100BaseFX

100 Mpbs Fast Ethernet, based on 4B/5B encoding with fibre

optics.

100BaseSX

100 Mbps Fast Ethernet system, identical to operations in the

100BaseFx, but 850 nm fibre optic technology is used.

100BaseTX

100 Mbps Fast Ethernet system based on 4B/5B encoding

and transmission via two copper cables.

100BaseX

This term is used to describe Fast Ethernet technologies based

on the 4B/5B encoding. Includes 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX

systems.

802.3.IEEE

The CSMA/CD group is the oldest working group in the 802

project. It defines the norms according to the CSMA/CD

access procedures proposed by the DIX-group. This working

group focuses on discussing high-speed protocols.

AGING:

Function to update data especially the address buffer. An

address is marked “old” after expiration of a time and will be

deleted at next cycle, if it is not learned anew.

AUI

Stands for “Attachment Unit Interface”. Interface between the

transceiver and the network board.

Auto-negotiation

Auto-negotiation means automatic recognition of the opposite

end’s functions. By using RJ45 plugs for the different protocols,

from 10Base-T to 100Base-T, a compatibility problem occurs

which is solved due automatic recognition of the opposite end.

Using the auto-negotiation procedure, repeaters or terminal

equipment can determine what functions the other end has, so

that different devices can be configured automatically.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth states how much information can flow within a set

period from one location to the other. Units: Bps, Kbps, Mbps,

Gbps.

Baud

Baud is the unit of step speed. A step always lasts for a

pre-set time e. g. 1 bit, 1_character. If you multiply the number

of bits per state with the baud rate you obtain the transmission

speed. Only if the number of states is exactly two (i.e.

encoding was carried out at a state of exactly 1 bit), is the

baud rate exactly the same as the bit rate.

Bit

Bit is an artificial word made up of binary and digit and consti-

tutes the smallest unit of digital information, either a 0 or a 1.

Bitrate

Bitrate is also referred to as transmission speed, transmission

rate or data rate. It is the number of bits that are transmitted

per unit of time (typically one second). The bitrate is stated in

Bps (bits per second) or in the appropriate powers of 10 as

Kbps, Mbps and Gbps. In American English the abbreviation

Bps is used.

W.3

Bridge

According to their OSI definition, bridges connect sub-network

protocols on layer 2 of the OSI reference model.

Broadcast

A broadcast transmission is a simultaneous transmission from

one point to all network stations.

Bus

Buses are connection systems for electronic and electrical

components. The topology of a bus is always a physical

medium which the individual components are connected to

and which is terminated at both ends. Transmission on a bus

can be done bit or byte parallel, as in the PC-bus, or serially,

as for networks in bus topology.

Category 5

Signifies compliance to features specified in EIA/TIA-568-5.

With category 5 (cat. 5) components, networks can be set

up that are suitable for all twisted-pair cable Ethernet

transmission systems up to 100 Mbps, including 10Base-T

and 100Base-TX.

Category 5e

The cat. 5e-cable is an extended version of cat. 5 for use

in 1000-Base-T networks or for long-distance 100-Base-T

network connections (350 m, compared with 100 m for cat. 5).

It must fulfil the EIA/TIA 568A-5 specification.

CRC

CRC is an error correction method that creates checksums

based on binary numbers by calculating the sums of data

groups prior to transmission. CRC is based on the division

of polynomials. The principal is that during cyclical block

checking, the bits to be monitored are successively fed into a

feedback shift register. The length and the number and position

of the feedback from the register are stated according to each

procedure. The checksum procedure detects individual errors

reliably and multiple errors with a high degree of probability.

Crossover-cable

A crossover-cable is a special patch cable where the transmit-

ter and receiver lines at one end have been swapped.

Crossover-cables are used to connect two pieces of terminal

equipment (computers) or two infrastructure components

(switches). Modern switches, because of their auto-crossing

function, make connecting normal patch cables with one

another possible.

CSMA/CD

An access procedure where several network stations have

access to the transmission medium. In the CSMA-system

the transmitting station listens to the channel (carrier sensing)

before it transmits. A station can then only transmit if the

transmission medium has not yet been occupied by another

station. If the transmission medium is occupied, the station

waits till it is free and can transmit. Because of the signalling

times it is still possible for two devices to transmit at the same

time. To avoid data loss in this type of collision, both transmit-

ters have to detect the collision (collision detect) and after a

randomly-selected waiting time send each of their data packets

again. CSMA/CD is a widespread standard process in

10-MBit-networks with hubs. In Industrial Ethernet networks

the CSMA/CD system is only used rarely nowadays, because

of high demands on network performance.

DCE

(Data Communication Equipment)

Data communications facility. Any facility that can relay data

between data terminal equipment. DCEs are part of the

infrastructure and not terminal equipment.

DTE

(Data Terminal Equipment) data terminal unit: Every device in

the network where a communications route starts or finishes.

A station (computer or host) in the network that can transmit

or receive data.

Error Detection

The error detection code is a detection code (CRC or

checksum) used where errors are identified but not corrected

as in ECC.

Ethernet

Ethernet is computer networking technology for local networks

(LANs). It refers to cable types and signalling for the bit transfer

layer (physical layer), packet formats and protocols for

checking media access (media access control, MAC)/link layer

of the OSI model. Ethernet is standardised to a large extent in

the IEEE norm 802.3.

W.4

Fast Ethernet

Nowadays a very widespread version of the Ethernet with

100 Mbps over twisted pair cable according to category 5

or higher. The maximum range is 100 m.

Flow Control

This is a function to modify transmission to the capacity of

the receiver. Flow control regulates transmission between

the transmitter and receiver by causing the transmitter only to

send as much data as the receiver can deal with. The different

types of Ethernet have different flow control systems. In credit

systems (FO cable) the receiver relays to the transmitter the

number of data packets that can be transmitted without confir-

mation. Duplex connections use the PAUSE signal for flow

control and back pressure is used in semi-duplex systems to

control the data rate.

Forwarding

The process whereby frames are relayed from one port to

another in the switch.

Frame

A frame is a data transmission frame on the link layer

(layer 2 in the OSI model), which includes the header and

trailer information that the bits transmission layer requires for

transmission. All frame formats together form the start delimiter

of a frame, the destination and source address (destination

and source address), the data itself of course and an error-

checking device (a frame check sequence). A maximum of

1500 bytes, with VPN-information of 1524 bytes of payload

data per packet are possible in the Ethernet.

Gigabit Ethernet

A version of the Ethernet operating at a data transmission rate

of 1000 Mbps.

Fibre optic cables

A type of cable with fibre optics or plastic core that transmits

digital signals in the form of light pulses. (Wave lengths 850 nm

in 10BaseFL and 100BaseSX or 1300 nm in 100BaseFX).

GPRS

Abbreviation for General Packet Radio Service (standard

mobile phone system). GPRS allows a data transmission rate

of up to 171.2 kbps and is suitable for internet access. GPRS

is based on GSM technology using an Internet protocol (IP).

Semi-duplex operation

The semi-duplex procedure allows bidirectional use of a

single transmission line. The interfaces however can only

either transmit or receive at any given time.

Hub

A hub is data communications facility (DCE) that makes it

possible to connect three or more devices in a star topology.

Modern Ethernet installations hardly use hubs any more but

use switches for this purpose because of the higher network

output that occurs as a result and the probable transmission

times.

IEEE

Association of American Engineers dealing with norm issues.

Internet

The internet is the world’s largest network. The internet

was developed back in the 1960’s for military purposes and

approved for commercial use in the 1990’s. Internet data

transmission is based on the TCP/IP protocol.

Jabber

This error is caused by a constant transmission from a network

interface card (NIC). It violates the CSMA/CD rules, hence it

cause high utilisation. Cause by faulty NIC or transceiver with

transmitting frames greater than 1518 with bad CRF/FCS.

Collision

Collision is when two or more stations transmit at the same

time in a joint data channel – e.g. a semi-duplex Ethernet or

a shared Ethernet. This means that the data transmitted are

worthless because they overlay. By overlaying both signals,

the signal level increases to what is known as the collision

level. This aborts the transmission to both stations.

Collision domain

A collision domain is a segment of a CSMA/CD network.

In 802.3 Ethernet networks all terminal equipment is on a

physical Ethernet segment, also including equipment that is

interconnected via a repeater, on the same collision domain.

In contrast to repeaters that do not affect the collision domain,

bridges and routers separate the collision domains.

LAN

(Local Area Network) local network e.g. within a building.

Link Integrity Test

This test ensures that the Ethernet link is connected properly

and that the signals are transmitted correctly. This is a helpful

extra but does not guarantee that the link functions perfectly.

Link Layer

The link layer in the OSI reference model.

Link Pulse

The NLP pulse is a recognition pulse that is transmitted from

10Base-T-stations to 100Base-T stations for auto-negotiation.

The NLP is a periodic pulse with an interval of 16 +/– 8 ms.

MAC Adress

The MAC address is the six byte long hardware address that

uniquely identifies a node in the network. The MAC address

is hard-coded onto a chip and cannot be manipulated. MAC

addresses are assigned according to a particular key that

includes unique adapter recognition, identification of the

manufacturer and an ID for operating and managing.

Manchester Encoding

Signal encoding where the binary information is shown by

the sign of a change in voltage within the bit time. This means

that transmitters and receivers are very easy to synchronise,

as the transfer in the middle of the bit time produces a reliable

frequency. The first half of the bit time includes representing

the complementary bit value to be transmitted, the second

half represents the bit value (specified for IEEE 802.3 Ethernet

and used in 10 Mbit networks).

MDI

The Physical Medium Attachment (PMA) and the Medium De-

pendent Interface (MDI) both form the actual transceiver (MAU)

for the 802.3 standard. The MDI is the physical (electrical, opti-

cal) and mechanical interface up to the medium. In the different

802.3-types the interface has a different structure.

MDI-X

MDI stands for Medium Dependent Interface and refers to

an Ethernet connection. Auto MDI/MDIX (autocrossing) makes

the automatic modification of the transmitting and receiving

line of a port possible, i.e. the connected Ethernet cable

(crossed/uncrossed) and the configuration of the opposite

station (MDI/MDIX) are recognised automatically and its own

port is configured appropriately. So all auto MDI/MDIX ports

can be used as uplink port.

Media converters

Media converters connect different types of cable to one

another and the structure and maintain the functions of the

network. In its simplest form a media converter is a quadrupole

in the form of a box or network adapter card with a power

supply. It modifies different cables – coaxial cables, TP-cables

and FO cables – and different plugs to fit one another. In this

way media converters can for example be used to modify

100Base-TX to 100Base-FX or to convert monomode fibres

to multimode fibres. By using media converters the boundaries

of network extension can be increased for example by using

fibre optic routes, on the other hand existing networks can be

inexpensively integrated into new network concepts. The

Weidmüller range includes media converters on copper-based

10Base-T or 100Base-TX on fibre optic transmission and vice

versa.

Multicast

Multicast is a type of transmission from a single point to several

subscribers at the same time (group).

NIC

A network adapter board is a circuit board or another hardware

component that connects the network directly with the terminal

equipment. It can be a plug-in board for the bus system in

the terminal equipment. The network adapter board is the

physical interface to the communications network. It includes

the appropriate jacks for connection to the physical medium.

OPC

Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) is an interface developed

by Microsoft to link and embed data between different

applications. In this way external, but OLE-compatible texts,

graphics or tables can be embedded in other OLE applications.

Linking OLE compatible data is carried out by link to the

appropriate file. The original file remains untouched. During

embedding a copy of the file is embedded in the document.

OSI

OSI are internationally-agreed standards which open systems

should work with and define the rules for implementing these

norms. Communications systems are a combination of network

hardware and network and systems software in a group of

networked devices that permit free exchange of information

between these devices on the basis of joint protocol agree-

ments and interfaces, independently of the type of these

devices or how they are equipped. Systems that implement

OSI protocols are an example of this. The OSI standards are

freely available and not protected by licences.

Packet

A data packet is a defined arrangement of characters as part

of the data network, that are treated as a unit in transmission

services with data packet transmission. As well as the payload

data, data packets also include control information for ad-

dressing, sequence of transmission, flow control and error

adjustment at all protocol levels. A data packet can be of a

predetermined or variable length, but a maximum length is

specified. If the whole destination address is included in each

data packet, it is called a datagramme. On the other hand in

a virtual connection only the first data packet has the whole

address, whereas in the following data packets an assignment

is made to the appropriate connection.

Patch cable

In the floor distribution point the patch cable creates a flexible

connection between floor distribution point and the horizontal

wiring. Patch cables are FO cables or copper cables and are

also called jumper cords. Patch cables should be very flexible,

have a tight bending radius and if possible should max the

fixed cable. Patch cables are taken into account in the

ISO/IEC 11801 and EN 50173 standards, but are not included

in the transmission features specified for the link classes. This

should be changed when the cable standards are revised.

The patch cable should then, at a length of up to 5 m, be part

of a new definition, the channel specification and included in all

the transmission features. The jumper cord and a connection

cable, also 5 m long, will then be taken into account in this

specification.

PAUSE

A single frame is sent via the full-duplex mode to the available

stations, to signify that transmissions are to be reduced.

PHY

Physical Layer device. This term is mostly used for a trans-

ceiver in Fast and Gigabit Ethernet.

Physical Layer

The Physical Layer (PHY) is the top sublayer or physical layer

consisting of the PMD-sublayer and the PHY-sublayer. The

PHY-sublayer is underneath the MAC layer and encodes,

decodes and synchronises the station with the transmission

frequency and the regeneration of the transmission frequency.

Point-to-Point Technology

A type of connection where a connection is generated between

two pieces of terminal equipment. Point-to-Point connections

occur in the networked environment, in radio broadcasting in

beam radio and in the service area. In networks, where point-

to-point connections are concerned, instead of a user network

interface, an interface to a central facility in the network can

also be operated. The connection permanent or on demand.

Port

Connector on a hardware unit. Usually an input/output channel

on the computer or other hardware unit such as modem,

router, hub or multiplexer.

Port Mirroring

Port mirroring means that the data traffic of a switch port can

be mirrored, in order to detect errors or to measure through-

put, onto another port to which a management station can be

connected.

Promiscuous Mode

The Promiscuous Mode is a particular receiver mode for

network equipment. In this mode the device reads all the

incoming data traffic sent to the network interface that has

been switched to this mode and transmits the data to be

processed to the operating system. Normally this device

would only process packets directed to itself, which is done for

example in Ethernet networks by evaluating the MAC address.

Propagation Delay

The delay is the time that the signal requires to go from one

point in a transmission channel to another. Depending on the

transmission medium, the delay is the speed of light, as in

satellite transmission, or less when transmitting in data cables

and FO cables. It does not depend on the speed of light and

depends mostly on the dielectric constant of the medium or

in FO cables on the refraction.

Protocol

A data transmission protocol establishes the rules for the

exchange of information in the form of a directory. This includes

all formats, parameters and specifications for a complete,

perfect and effective transmission of data. Protocols include

conventions on data formats, times and how errors are treated

when exchanging data between computers. A protocol is a

convention on setting up connections, monitoring connections

and terminating connections. Different protocols are necessary

in a data connection. Protocols can be assigned to each layer

of the reference model. There are communication protocols

for the bottom four layers of the reference model and higher

protocols for control and data provisioning and its application.

Quality of Service (QoS)

QoS are all procedures that influence the flow of data in LANs

and WANs so that the service arrives at the receiver in a

particular quality. The ITU has developed a hierarchical QoS

model, which takes both the technical aspects of the service

into account and the availability and handling of the terminal

equipment. The ITU defined three QoS classes on this basis.

RapidRing™

Ring topology is the simplest and quickest way of achieving

network redundancy. RapidRing™ technology was developed

because there was no standard. This provides technical staff

in industrial automation with a simple and effective way of

achieving redundancy. RapidRing™ provides redundancy in

the event of a single error. The devices connected to form a

ring, are actually wired in a logical ring. As the ring structure

would lead to a loop in the network, a link would logically be

deactivated (backup link).

Rapid Spanning Tree

The IEEE Standard Rapid Spanning Tree protocol (RSTP, IEEE

802.3w) is – apart from RapidRing™ – another option to

provide redundancy in a network. The RSTP makes a structure

similar to the network possible. In this way multi-redundancy

can be achieved. Using RSTP in a network is not as simple as

using RapidRing™, but RSTP does have a lot of interesting

options.

Redundant Networks

Redundant networks are usually set up with Rapid Spanning

Tree or RapidRing™ technologies. Both systems have their

advantages in the areas they are to be used. In industrial

automation it is often quite simple to wire ring structures.

Using RSTP in a ring of 15 or more switches will not provide

satisfactory speed. When using RapidRing™ in this type of

installation, switching times of less than 300 ms and also larger

rings are possible.

Remote Management

Remote Management of a switch from every network station

equipped with Telnet or web browsers. Remote Management

assumes that each switch has its own IP address.

Repeaters

A repeater is an active component that takes on the regen-

eration functions in Ethernet LANs and operates on the bit

transmission layer.

Repeating Hub

A repeater with more than two ports. This term is simplified

by referring to it as a hub.

RJ45

The advantages of the RJ45 slot system are its compactness

and simplicity. It is using for horizontal wiring and wiring work

places. The RJ45 slot system is an eight pole miniature slot

system for use in connections with SDP and UTP cables. The

plug’s eight contacts have serial numbers and are protected

from corrosion and mechanical stress with a thin gold layer.

The contact points are situated between guide rails the cable

is connected with insulation piercing. On the side opposite to

the contact side, the RJ45 plug has a fluke that locks the slot

when sticking it into a RJ45 jack.

SC-plug-in connection

The SC-plug is a small polarised push/pull plug with high

packing density. This LWL-plug is square and can be used for

multimode fibres and monomode fibres. Typical insertion loss

is at 0.2 dB to 0.4 dB, operating loss in monomode fibres at

50 dB and multimode fibres at least 40 dB. If monomode fibres

with skew angle coupling are used instead of oval coupling,

the operating loss increases to at least 70 dB. In the duplex

type, as a SC-Duplex plug, the plug must be used where

there is fibre-optic wiring to the terminal equipment. It is also

increasingly used in new installations and in FCS and ATM

applications.

Segment

The term segment has many meanings. In networks a segment

is a network section delimited by bridges, routers or switches.

Where LANs are concerned, a LAN segment or a collision

domain is referred to. In token ring networks the transmission

section between two neighbouring data stations is meant. In

the TCP specifications, a segment describes a single infor-

mation unit on the communication network.

Slot time

This is an important Ethernet value. The slot time is twice

the speed of the signal propagation time between the two

networks that are farthest away from one another and the

minimum packet length of 64 bytes or 512 bits. At a frequency

clock speed of 10 Mbps, or a frequency clock cycle of

a 100 ns, this produces a slot time of 51.2 μs. At 100 Mbps

the frequency is 10 ns, so therefore the slot time for the same

packet length is 51.2 μs. The greater the slot time, the poorer

the Ethernet performance.

SNMP

The SNMP protocol means that central network management

for many network components is possible. SNMP’s main

objectives are to decrease the complexity of the management

functions, to extend the protocol and to be independent of

any network components. The SNMP protocol supports

monitoring, controlling and administration of networks.

According to the SNMP architecture model a network is

divided into network management stations (NMS) and network

components. The network management stations carry out

applications to monitor and control the network components.

The network components have management agents, which

carry out management functions.

Spanning Tree Protocol

-> see Rapid Spanning Tree.

ST-plug

This LWL-plug (IEC-SC 86B) specified by AT&T is suitable

for both monomode fibres and multimode fibres. The ST-plug

is a commonly-available plug, used in LANs. It uses a bayonet

lock as its locking system. In this LWL-plug the FO cables is

guided through a ceramic or metal ferrule with a pin diameter

of 2.5 mm and is prevented from twisting by a metal pin. The

ceramic ferrule has been grounded to make its contact area

convex. A spring means that there is constant contact to the

front of the fibres to be connected.

Star topology

In star topology the transmission stations are connected in

a star shape to a central node. Star topologies can only

exchange data indirectly via the central node. There is a

difference between active and passive star systems. In the

former, the middle node is a computer that takes over relaying

the messages. Its capacity determines the performance of

the network. For example: private exchanges. Passive systems

only have one node in the middle that combines the routes.

This node does not have any exchange role, its purpose is

signal regeneration. Passive star systems can for example be

operated with TDMA, CSMA/CD or token access procedures.

Straight-through

A type of cable where the cable connections at both ends are

the same. This type of cable is mostly used to connect devices

such as switches with the station. Straight-through is the

normal way of wiring cables – in contrast to crossover cables.

Station

Each hardware component in a network and the terminal

equipment connected to the network. Server, router, telephone,

fax machine etc and all communication devices connected with

a network adapter (NIC).

Switching Hub

Switches are network components that have switching

functions. These switching functions can also take place as

exchange functions in long-distance networks and in local

networks. In long-distance networks the local exchanges

have local switches and the remote exchanges have central

switches.

Topology

The configuration of the network nodes and connections is

called the physical topology. The logical connections of net-

work nodes possible are referred to as the logical topology.

This states which node pairs can communicate with one

another and whether they have a direct physical connection.

The physical and logical topology does not have to be identical

in networks. As a rule network topologies can be divided into

two classes, where in the first class connections from one

node to the next one are set up and in the second class all

network nodes are directly connected to the transmission

medium. The most well-known network topologies are ring

topology, bus topology, tree topology and star topology. There

is also meshed topology in long-distance networks

Transceiver

Transceiver is a compound word made up of transmitter and

receiver and signifying a transmitting/receiving device. The

transceiver implements network access of a station to the

Ethernet and is sometimes called a MAU.

Trunking

The term trunking occurs in Ethernet networks but also in

private exchanges and in mobile communication. In large

Ethernet networks trunking is the parallel switching of several

Ethernet links. The transmission via the parallel links is used to

scale the bandwidth and is activated by the spanning tree

algorithm. As the spanning tree protocol is unsuitable for

granular bandwidth scaling, this technology has been

standardised in the IEE 802.3ad working group and called

“Aggregation of multiple link segments”.

Twisted-Pair Cable

A twisted-pair cable is a symmetrical copper cable consisting

of two wires that are twisted together. The conductors consist

of insulated copper conductors. In contrast to asymmetrical

cables, such as coaxial cables, symmetrical cables do not have

reference potential. The advantage is that wires can be arran-

ged to prevent interference between the lines.

VLAN

Virtual networks or virtual LANs (VLAN) are a technological

concept for implementing logical work groups within a network.

This type of network is implemented using LAN-switching or

virtual routing on the link layer or on the network layer.

Full Duplex Operation

In full duplex operation or duplex operation both communi-

cations partners can communicate bi-directionally at the same

time.

Webserver

A web server is a server programme that provides files via

HTTP protocol. These files are usually websites, pictures and

style sheets. It makes no difference to the webserver what

type of files it supplies. Each time a web site is requested (for

example by clicking a link), the browser sends an HTTP query

to a web server. This web server can then send the site

requested back. The standard ports for the web server are

84 HTTP protocol and 443 for HTTPS, the encrypted HTTP

(for example with SSL). Usually all page requests are saved

in a log file, from where - by using log file analysis - different

statistics on access can be generated. However these do not

give the full picture, as HTTP is a connectionless protocol.
