Message from the President

Since its establishment in 1988, GS1 Korea has been the focal point that catalyzed the advancement of supply chain management in Korean industries. Toward that endeavor, GS1 Korea has been enhancing its profile as the provider of global standards and solutions with its expertise and experience.

As a result, our membership has grown remarkably over the past 23 years from a mere 50 companies in 1988 to 23,000 in 2011. We have also expanded our business coverage to include rising global issues such as consumer safety, mobile commerce, and advancement into new business areas.

Among the many meaningful achievements of GS1 Korea, the successful implementation of the Unsafe Products Screening System (UPSS) has significantly enhanced consumer safety in Korea and it was chosen as the successful business case during the 2010 GS1 General Assembly. Furthermore, to provide truly valuable service to members, GS1 Korea has embarked upon the development of an online barcode management system entitled "One-Stop Barcode Manager (OBM)" which would formally begin its service in 2012. With the OBM service, our member companies are expected to dramatically save time and reduce cost in generating and managing barcodes while improving the efficiency of supply chain management.

Our service went beyond the nation's borders when GS1 Korea willingly agreed to offer educational training to other MOs in Asia in order to help them facilitate the introduction of GS1 standards. For this, GS1 Korea won the Mentor Award during the 2011 GS1 General Assembly.

GS1 Korea will continue to serve as an organization which is trusted and beloved by its members by fulfilling its missions and providing innovative services. I would like to thank everyone for their contributions and I look forward to further success in 2012.

Standards Implementation

The primary role of GS1 Korea is the management of GS1 standards such as identification codes, barcodes and RFID, which serve as business languages that enable the IT-based exchange of business information today. With more focus on enhancing the efficiency of the retail supply chain, GS1 Korea is making efforts to apply the GS1 system to a wider range of industries including healthcare, transport/logistics, automotive, apparel, steel and agro-fisheries. As of 2011, GS1 Korea has more than 23,000 member companies benefiting from the use of GS1 standards.

To support our member companies in implementing GS1 standards, we are providing a web-based electronic product catalog service, KorEANnet (www.koreannet.or.kr), which enables companies to efficiently share product information for e-commerce. Also, to ensure more stable use of GS1 barcodes, we offer a barcode verification service for manufacturing companies. The barcode verification service is to ensure that member companies use barcodes on the products correctly by verifying scannability of the barcodes thus preventing any scanning errors at retail stores.

In addition, GS1 Korea plays an active role in providing various IT application services based on the GS1 system of standards for member companies. One of the core services is the "Unsafe Products Screening System (UPSS)" launched in 2009. UPSS helps enhance consumer safety by blocking the sale of unsafe products. It can be done by using GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) as the product identifier along with KorEANnet as the communication channel throughout information sharing processes. Also, in line with the smart phone era, GS1 Korea is working on providing a variety of mobile services such as "SHOWCASE" to meet fast-changing consumer needs. SHOWCASE is the name of a mobile service that enables product authentication and provides information on new products on a mobile platform. (For more information on UPSS and SHOWCASE, please refer to "2011 Highlights.")

On the other hand, in an effort to facilitate the development and implementation of standards, GS1 works in close collaboration with a number of international standards and inter-governmental bodies such as :

• International Organization for Standardization (ISO)• United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) • Association for Automatic Identification and Mobility (AIM Global)• World Customs Organization (WCO) • World Health Organization (WHO)

GS1 Korea has also strengthened working relationships with many organizations including the SC31 committee (sub-committee of ISO/IEC JTC1), UN/CEFACT, etc. By maintaining a close strategic working relationship, we will continue to promote the implementation of standards in Korea.

One-Stop Barcode Manager (OBM) : Online Barcode Management System for Member Companies

With the goal to deliver "truly valuable service to members," GS1 Korea has embarked upon the development of an online service entitled "One-Stop Barcode Manager (OBM)" which would formally begin its service in 2012.

The OBM is an online tool enabling the allocation of GTIN code, creation of barcode symbols, and registration of product information in a single access, thus providing member companies with benefits in terms of convenience that would help save time and reduce costs as well.

The user can choose to enter either simple information or detailed information, for which the program offers an integrated service with "KorEANnet," the GS1-compliant e-Catalog run by GS1 Korea, so as to provide more advanced form of product data synchronization service in conjunction with other retailers. (Additional services are provided for barcode verification and filming of product image.)

The One-Stop Barcode Manager offers many distinct features :• access allowed only to GS1 Korea members • automatic creation of barcodes depending on each type (GTIN-8, GTIN-13, GTIN-14, UPC-A) • download of barcode symbol images of various file formats (EPS, JIG, JPG, BMP)• automatic mass creation of barcodes for manufacturers of

diverse items• follow-up service to individual members (notificati on membership renewal, indication of barcode consumption ratio, change of member information)• one-on-one messenger consultation with GS1 Korea staff

The OBM service would offer chances to promote the products of member companies in collaboration with online shopping malls or internet portal sites by utilizing product information stored in the One-Stop Barcode Manager, while KorEANnet-based Product Master DB Project would provide quality information for retail and logistics companies who need product barcode information.

For variable measure fresh foods*, weight and count information are important factors in enabling accurate sales forecasting and effective inventory management. As a result, efficiently managing these data is becoming critical for retailers and food suppliers.

However, most retailers in Korea, especially small and medium-sized companies have hardly managed these data at all, or even if managed, the data are still marked on products in human-readable formats, which means the process of verifying them cannot be automated.

GS1 DataBar is the key solution to address these problems. A kind of linear barcode, GS1 DataBar can carry additional information based on the individual needs of the retailer and its supplier, while the current 13-digit barcode, called EAN-13, can include only limited information.

In recognition of its usefulness and benefit, LOTTE Mart, the third largest hypermarket covering 93 stores in Korea, became a market leader in adopting GS1 DataBar for variable measure fresh foods as a tool to manage weight and count information. Before the adoption of GS1 DataBar, LOTTE Mart applied EAN-13 barcode carrying just price information, and represented weight and count information in a human-readable text.

As a data carrier, LOTTE Mart used GS1 DataBar Expanded Stacked and encoded weight or count information in

addition to price. With the adoption of GS1 DataBar, LOTTE Mart could build an automatic data capture system at the retail POS and this system has enabled accurate sales forecasting and improved inventory management. As a result, LOTTE Mart has seen greatly increased efficiency, accuracy and cost savings in the variable measure products supply chain.

As of August 2011, LOTTE Mart started to apply GS1 DataBar to all stores. It is very meaningful in that this implementation was the real adoption in Korea, proving the powerful and tangible benefits of GS1 DataBar. Of course, there are a lot of challenges in technical and operational aspects. However, based on this experience, GS1 Korea is planning to expand to various product categories and will move gradually to other retailers and food suppliers.

As using smart-phones to scan barcodes becomes prevalent around the globe, many countries are driven to develop a wide range of mobile services for users. In a move to offer membership services that befit this smart-phone era, GS1 Korea is also working on the launch of the "SHOWCASE" mobile service that enables product authentication and provides information on new products on a mobile platform.

SHOWCASE is a service that will support the promotion of new products and customer service by smart-phones. In 2010, a centrally-controlled infrastructure program was developed whereby one can input the GS1 barcodes or EPCs, and the detailed location information of the relevant product. The SHOWCASE will be made available for distribution during the first half of 2012, following the development of mobile application, solution program to enable individual company to create a mobile web site in 2011.

The SHOWCASE application comes in both android and iphone versions, which will provide various services regarding the information search and purchase for products, and product authentication.

To make the product authentication service operable, the manufacturer should print or attach a QR code or an RFID tag containing EPC which can represent the serial number.

A successful example of product authentication is found in the case of "School Looks," a manufacturer of student uniforms which labels QR codes on all of its uniforms. By scanning the QR code through the SHOWCASE application, consumers can confirm the genuineness of the products on the spot.

Efforts are being made to expand the product authentication service to red ginseng, bags, jewelries, etc. in the coming future.

Moreover, in order to accommodate the wide spectrum of industries, SHOWCASE has been developed in a module format that allows individual companies to select and construct the various menus when creating a mobile website. This program can be applied to companies of various industries such as school catering, apparel, eco-friendly organic farming, and local indigenous products.

GS1 Korea will continue to develop and upgrade SHOWCASE, to enable the promotion of new products and growth of sales for member companies.

GS1 Korea is developing the performance comparison testing service, which conducts a performance comparison of RFID readers and tags to provide a guideline that would serve as a reference in determining the right equipments for future users. This service aims to support those companies interested in the adoption of RFID technology by helping them find the appropriate equipments for their business purposes.

In order to provide data applicable to industrial fields, GS1 Korea will include industry-specific performance criteria for RFID adoption in the test list, which will be supported by setting up a community consisting of trailblazer companies of RFID adoption from different businesses.

This project will be undertaken with joint participation of Korea Testing Laboratory and RFID/USN Center (both were accredited by ATC* of GS1 EPCglobal) who will execute the test of the equipments. GS1 Korea will conduct this project for five years until 2016 with the responsibility to promote and distribute the test results.

Preliminarily, GS1 Korea will designate priority business sectors such as pharmaceuticals, apparels, liquors,

electronics, food, on which the Korean government is focusing all-out efforts with the goal to spread RFID.

The test results will be released to public through the RFID knowledge management website in an easily understandable format helping those interested companies utilize and share the information.

During the course of introducing the RFID technology, individual companies have spent a lot of time and money before finally choosing the right reader and tag for them. It is expected that the outcome of this project will save time and initial costs for the companies, encouraging them to actively pursue the adoption of RFID technology.

Around the world, 2011 was a year when a wide range of industries saw real benefit by adopting EPC/RFID technology in their business. This was certainly the case in Korea, where GS1 Korea applied RFID system to key industries and is finding successful results from the following concrete actions :

Pharmaceutical IndustriesConcerns about rapidly escalating healthcare costs have called for the pharmaceutical industry to adopt EPC/RFID system. Since 2009, Hanmi, the 2nd largest domestic pharmaceutical company, has implemented RFID for all

products they manufacture at the production line : RFID tags containing EPCs have been attached to 600 million products every year. This enables Hanmi to optimize supply chain management including logistics, procurement, stock and asset management processes, which results in the improvements in security, cost savings and efficiencies. With the adoption of the EPC/RFID system, Hanmi is expected to bring about a cost reduction of about 2% from total sales figure.

Consumer Electronics IndustriesDue to the complexity of the consumer electronics business, increasing visibility and optimizing processes becomes critical to a company's success. In an effort to create visibility throughout the total product life cycle, LG Electronics adopted an EPC-enabled RFID system in the consumer electronics supply chain. In 2010, LG Electronics started to build an EPC/RFID system in the field of flat screen TVs. By attaching RFID tags containing EPCs to the flat screen of 800,000 TVs, LG Electronics enables life cycle management by providing traceability from manufacturing

to distribution, sales, servicing and maintenance. LG Electronics will expand this system to more than 400 retail stores. With EPC/RFID technology, LG Electronics is expected to facilitate collaboration among supply chain partners, which leads to improved productivity and higher profitability.

As the concern over consumer product safety is increasing, both governments and industries worldwide have focused on enhancing efforts to protect consumers. In Korea our efforts to ensure consumer safety have been embodied by the launch of the "Unsafe Products Screening System (UPSS)" in 2009. UPSS was initiated by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and GS1 Korea in collaboration with three relevant government bodies - Korea Food & Drug Administration, Ministry of Environment, and Korean Agency for Technology & Standards.

UPSS is designed to enhance consumer safety by using the GS1 system of standards to effectively and efficiently share information about unsafe products. Under the UPSS, the government bodies communicate information about unsafe products to KorEANnet (the GS1-compliant e-Catalog run by GS1 Korea) as soon as they identify a product safety issue. KorEANnet in turn sends the information to retailers on a real time basis and retailers then block the sale of those products to consumers at their point-of-sale (POS) terminals. Throughout the information sharing process, the GS1 GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is used as the product identifier.

2011 was the year when proven business benefits propelled the adoption of UPSS. Major retailers stepped up their

efforts to adopt UPSS, which led to a significant increase in the number of applied stores from 14,000 of 12 retailers in 2010 to 28,000 of 27 in 2011. Furthermore, to expand the operation of UPSS not only at off-line retail stores but also in online merchandising, GS1 Korea has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with major Korean home shopping operators and internet-based shopping malls. Two leading home shopping operators - GS Home Shopping and NS Home Shopping - have newly joined in 2011. The adoption of UPSS by internet-based merchandising makes on-line shopping more trusted and safe.

In addition, GS1 Korea has led a variety of initiatives to support small and medium-sized retailers. As part of these efforts, an internet-based software solution that enables SMEs to install UPSS system was launched in October 2010 and it brought benefits to 148 stores as of 2011.

With the UPSS system, the sale of unsafe products is automatically blocked, which in effect provides consumers with a sense of relief and confidence. Eventually, the system reduces recalls, thus reducing cost for management and enhancing brand images for the companies involved.

GS1 Korea launched a free web-based online barcode generating program named "BarMate" and opened it to member companies in September 2010. The BarMate program is freeware which creates printable and scannable barcode images from GS1 standard barcode symbologies. GS1 standard barcode symbologies which can be generated by the BarMate program include EAN/UPC, ITF-14, GS1 DataBar, GS1-128 and GS1 DataMatix and users can choose the image from the following file format : EPS, BMP, PNG, GIF, JPG and EMP. With BarMate, creating barcode images has become easy and inexpensive for everyone.

The BarMate service aims to help our member companies and users reduce their cost and time related to designing barcodes for their products. An innovative aspect of this program is that users can download multiple barcode images at once when they upload multiple identification numbers in an Excel file. As it is available both in Korean and English versions, BarMate contributes to facilitate the use of standard barcodes not only in Korea but also across the globe, encouraging more retailers and manufacturers to adopt the GS1 system and join GS1.

Since the launching of BarMate, GS1 Korea has seen a significant increase in the number of users. As of 2011, a total of 3,046 member companies have used the BarMate program and this number is expected to rapidly rise. In the year ahead, GS1 Korea will increase its focus and attention on enhancing the service quality as well as enabling more companies to use BarMate program.
