Project Title Audience and Sound Case Study

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)

During the two years I have been on this course I have developed an interest in work that involves creating sounds and also includes storytelling. For my Extended Project last year I created a podcast and did some research into sound and podcast formats and I want to develop on that this year. More recently I have started to think about the mood that can be created by sounds and have started thinking about the environments and how they can affect this and I want to explore this further. Recently I have also done some work creating sounds for a Sci-Fi setting and as part of this looked into Ben Burt’s work for Star Wars and Star Trek and I want to try and explore sounds in different possible sci-fi environments to see what different moods they create. This project would allow me to learn more about mood and environment and it will how sound can affect the audience. Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)

The concept of my project is to explore different environments in a Sci-Fi-setting and see how the mood/atmosphere of those environments are affected by the sounds. I want to explore sound

design and the effects of sound through different techniques and skills. I will base the sounds on a series of images that will represent different environments. I will explore this through a narrative of an astronaut who lands on a distant planet to scout it, which will contain different environments starting on a spaceship and then moving onto the planet. I will then get people to listen to my sounds and give their reactions and opinions on the mood and atmosphere that has been created through the sounds. For this I will do research into environments and atmosphere to determine how I can affect it using sound and also research into existing sci-fi products, including films, TV shows, video games, and podcasts. I will experiment with creating sounds for another planet and trying different things to create different atmospheres on a planet. My target audience for this are people who have an interested in sound, environments, and atmosphere as they are the people who are going to be most interested in this and will want to see the results. Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)

I will reflect and evaluate my work by creating targets at the beginning of the week and then analyse what I have achieved at the end of the week by thinking about how it will help with my final outcome and how I could do it better in the future. I will document these targets in my progress tracker so that I can keep up to date with what I am planning to do. I will also do focus groups where I get people to listen to the work I have produced and get them to give me feedback on it so that I am able to improve it. At the end of the project I will evaluate by looking at my case study and analysing the results and feedback from the audience and making a conclusion based on them and presenting those results along with the audio I have produced.

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

This Project Portfolio is to document all the work I produce for my Extended Project. My project is a study into sound and how it can affect the audience through different environments. In this chapter I will be explaining my project and discussing the tasks I have done on this course that have led me to want to explore sound and that highlight my skills in this area. I will explain why my project is important and include a research plan showing some of the research that I plan to undertake over the next few weeks.

The Background of my Project

Who am I? The task I did in week 1 was to identify things that I love and then why I love them and what I know about them. To do this I created a mind map of the things I loved and then branched off of those with why I loved them. I then made a list of what I know about each thing. The purpose of this task was to give me ideas about what I could explore during the next few weeks and build towards my Extended Project by getting me to think about what I enjoy and what I know and don’t know so that I can perform research to learn more and inform my possible ideas more.

This task was to get me to start thinking about what I like and what it is about them that I like so that I have some ideas for what I will want to explore through my research and what I might want my Extended Project to focus on. This task was also to get me started on my research as I was conducting research on myself and finding out what I knew and realising that there is a lot I don’t know that I will need to do more research into to find out about them. From this task I confirmed that I am drawn to stories that have interesting characters that engage me in the story and make me want to find out more and so for my project I might try to do something where I can create characters and a story as that is something that interests me a lot.

What is my project about? My interest that my project will be about is exploring sound and the effects it can have on the audience and the mood of something. I want to explore different moods and how they can be created through sound and how this can affect the genre and narrative. I am going to do this in a Sci-Fi setting involving a spaceship and environments on a planet. I have selected images of different environments and a spaceship interior that I will use as a base for creating my sounds.

Why my project is important? This is important to me because it combines my interests of sound and storytelling and I will get to explore sounds in different environments and how I will be able to use them, and I will also get to work more with creating sounds for specific environments that will affect the audience in different ways. This is important because I will get to learn more about how to make the audience feel different things and explore all the ways that I am able to do that. This is also important because I am very interested in storytelling and I want to explore different ways of doing that through the use of sound.

My research question(s) 100How sound can affect the mood and story? Can the same environment evoke different emotions depending on the sounds? Can different environments have the same atmosphere if they have the same or similar sounds? How can I create a story that uses sound to create emotion? How can I create different environments using only sound? How are environments portrayed through sound?

Research Design 100I will do my research looking at information on the internet and in books as well as doing primary research by going to different environments and recording the sounds there and then asking people what emotions they feel listening to the sounds, as by going into environments and then asking people what they feel I can learn what sounds will create specific emotions which I could use for my project. By using books and the internet I can read about what other people have done with sound and emotion and take inspiration from this. I will also look for any podcasts that might be relevant to my work.

CHAPTER 2

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction As part of my Extended Project I will research different audio techniques on creating sounds for a Science-Fiction setting using resources such as websites, films, podcasts, and books. These will provide me with knowledge I can use for my project and influence my decisions further along the project. In this chapter I will review the range of sources I have used for my research and detail how they have influenced me and what I have learnt from them. This chapter also includes my practitioner’s report where I researched two individuals who have influenced sound design. I will then conclude with what has inspired me and the context of my study.

Practitioners Report For this task, I was following on from my research into sound by looking at two practitioners, one early and one contemporary, from my specialist area which is sound. The early practitioner that I researched was Jack Foley as he started the Foley technique of recording sounds that has given directors a new way of recording sounds like footsteps in post-production. The contemporary practitioner I looked at was Ben Burtt as he has designed sound effects for many films including the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films and has inspired other sound designers with his work, but I will mainly be looking at his more recent work for the new Star Trek films. I will be deconstructing some of their work and looking at the materials they used, and the processes and techniques they used to create their work. I will also be discussing the biography and history of them and their work.

Jack FoleyJack Foley was born in 1891 and was a pioneer in the field of sound effects in film. Foley had many jobs throughout his life, including, being an accountant, a cartoonist, a stunt man, and a film director as well as some others. However it was while he was working as an assistant director for Universal, who were under pressure after Warner Bros released “The Jazz Singer” that he came up with the idea of gathering people to record sounds like clapping or cheering. This became known as the “direct to picture” or “Foley” technique. There had been sound effects in some films before Foley, however he developed the best way to make them work as a small team was able to create the effects, match them with what was happening on screen and record it all on one reel. This made it very easy to record sound effects. It has been reported that Foley would be able to recreate the sound of three people walking together using his own feet and a cane.

One of the most famous examples of Jack Foleys work is from the film “Spartacus”. For a scene involving an army marching into battle the director, Stanley Kubrick, was not happy with the sound from the location and was planning to send the crew back out to record the scene again, but Jack Foley was able to save the time and money that would have cost and did the sounds using Foley. He managed to recreate the sound of the army marching using his feet and used keys in front of a

microphone to create the sound of their armour and weapons moving as they marched. He was able to authentically recreate those sounds, that without him would have cost the studio thousands to reshoot, just by using his knowledge of what they should sound like and improvising how he would be able to make them.

Jack Foley has influenced me as now that I have learnt about Foley I really want to do more of it and I am always wondering about what sounds I could create with different objects when I have been doing my sound experiments and how I could incorporate Foley into my FMP.

Ben BurttBen Burtt was born in 1948 and has been the sound designer on many famous and successful films, such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones, which have won him four Academy Awards. During his career he has created iconic science fiction sounds including R2-D2’s voice, the hum of the lightsabres, and Darth Vader’s breathing. He “singlehandedly redefined the sounds of science fiction and other film lore by utilizing organic material such as film projectors, guy wires, and walruses to engineer authentic-sounding science fiction sounds”. Before his work in the first Star Wars film, sci-fi movies relied on electronic sounding effects to use for futuristic devices, but Ben Burtt wanted more natural sounds that would make the audience believe they were authentic. For example, he made the lightsabre hum from a film projector combined with feedback from a broken television, which he thought to do after a microphone picked up the feedback. It is because of his work pioneering sound design that modern sci-fi films sound the way they do and why he was sought out to work on the Star Trek films. One of Ben Burtt’s most subtle sound effects is the use of an “audio black hole”. In the film “Attack of the Clones” Burtt adds a short period of absolute silence into the film right before the detonation of a “seismic charge”. This was done to make the following explosion more prominent for the audience. He recalls his influence for this as from a talk with a retired sound editor.

For his work on the Star Trek films Burtt wanted to create new sounds that sounded similar to the ones from the original series and so created his sound effects in very similar ways as they were originally made. To recreate the sound of the Enterprise Warp Drive he thought about how it would have been made and then tried to do that himself by using the same equipment. He used a test oscillator and put it through a plate reverb chamber as he believed that was how the sound was originally made and he wanted a similar musical tone that would change pitch. To create the sound of the transporter he did something a bit different to the original series as the transporter in the film isn’t exactly the same, so he made the sound for it using bar chimes and adding a lot of reverb.

Ben Burtt has influenced me as he has changed the way science fiction sound effects are created and I enjoyed creating sound effects using ordinary objects and then manipulating them to get them to sound like something sci-fi and I want to do more work like that in the future and keep trying to create sounds for any genre just by using objects that I can easily find.

From this task I have learnt much more about two people who have both made a difference to the sound industry and how sound effects are made. I have also learnt how these individuals produced some of their most well-known works and how I am able to do similar things with the tools I have available which has given me ideas for what I could do for my FMP. I can use what I have learnt from this task in my FMP as I now have ideas as to how certain sounds can be made and if I need to make any of these sounds or sounds similar to them I will already have an idea of how I can start to make them and then I can develop that and experiment so that I can create the perfect sounds for what I require.

Resources ReviewHere I am going to review the sources I have used as part of my research by detailing what I have learned from them and how that will help me complete my project.

https://www.asoundeffect.com/stellar-spaceship-sound-effects/. This article had tips on how to create different sounds for a spaceship and suggested some objects and techniques that could be used, and gave an idea of what they should sound like depending on the size of the ship and whether they are inside or outside the spaceship. From this website I gained some ideas of the kind of objects I can record and techniques I can edit them with to get the sounds I want and this has influenced some of the experimentation that I have done as I have tried to create engine noises for different sized ships using some of the ideas discussed in the article.

https://www.asoundeffect.com/sci-fi-ui-sound-effects/. This article is about User Interface sounds in Sci-Fi and talks about making the UI sound effects reflect the physical component the sound is coming from is important to making the sound design convincing. This is important to me as I won’t have much visuals the sounds I create will need to accurately convey the device that is producing them. This article also includes examples of techniques that can be used to create UI sound effects that vary depending on the type of sound you need for the interface. My idea for my spaceship interior is for it to be very sleek and futuristic so the UI sounds I create will need to be quite synthesized to reflect the interface, therefore I will use some of the techniques talked about here to experiment with and then decide what I think fits best.

http://www.galactica.tv/battlestar-galactica-2003-interviews/daniel-colman-galactica.tv-interview.html. This article is an interview with Daniel Coleman who was the supervising sound editor for the 2003 Battlestar Galactica series where he talks about how he created some of the sounds for the show, including engine sounds for the different sized ships used, and what he took inspiration from.

https://www.20k.org/episodes/good-bad-and-irritating. This podcast talks about how different sounds can create different feelings for the audience based on the effect a sound is intended to have, for example fingernails on a chalkboard is a sound that is intended to grab people’s attention and make them look in that direction and the effect it has on people’s brain is it tries to figure out where it is coming from. This is useful to me as I want to create different feelings for the audience within the different environments that I want to create.

https://www.fastcompany.com/3025878/radiolabs-jad-abumrad-on-storytelling-with-sound. This interview with the creator of the Radio Lab podcast is about telling stories using just sound and explains how the limitations of that can be beneficial. This is useful to me as I am aiming to tell a story through sound that will make the audience feel different emotions.

Research QuestionsThe aim of my Extended Project is to find out “How sound can effect the atmosphere of an environment and the audience?”. I will do this by exploring atmospheres in different environments through experimenting with ambience and then getting feedback from people.

Another question that I will ask during my research is “How can I create engine sounds for different sized spacecrafts?”. I want to know this because you my narrative the ship that descends onto the planet will be a small one person shuttle but I might also have a larger spaceship. Due to the different sizes the engines will sound different and I will need to make it obvious what the size of the ship is through my sound design so that the audience can understand. I am going to do experiments into this so that I can learn how to manipulate the sound using different techniques to make it larger or smaller and then will apply that knowledge to my final result. I will also use different materials to try and create a variety of sounds.

As my project involves ambient sound I am going to do an experiment into creating ambience for a specific feeling in a location using sounds I can find from other sources. To determine what feeling and location I would need to create ambience for I had a collection of feelings and locations written on pieces of paper and picked one from each and got Bleak Spaceship. Once I have selected the sounds I will edit them to make them better fit the atmosphere and environment I am trying to create. Once I have the sounds completed I will get people to listen to it and then I will ask them to complete a survey about the atmosphere and why it made them feel the way it did so that I can learn more about ambience and what works to create a specific ambience.

Another experiment I will do is I will try to create typical sounds that would be heard on a spaceship apart from the engine. I will create sounds of footsteps walking around the interior which will need to be quite metalic. I will also try and create the sound of autamatic doors closing/opening. By doing this experiment I can learn techniques that will be useful and also I will learn what materials will be good to use to create the sounds I want.

I am also going to deconstruct two films that contain exapmles of spaceship sound design. These films are Passengers (2016) and Star Trek (2009). I have chosen to deconstruct these films because they are modern and so will have used more modern techniques for the sound design, and also the sounds they include and techniques they use can inspire me in my project. I will deconstruct them by watching them and noting down the sounds and how I think they were made.

Start with stating the intent of your EXTENDED PROJECT. What are the key aims and objectives of your project? Outline the key characteristics of your project. Write about your questions? You have to base your research design on questions and interests. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?” Write to the reader clear research questions, what you wanted to find out?

Research Design Evolution

In this chapter, you will expand on what you wrote in your project proposal. Write about what you researched and how you collected your data (research activities). Remember, in this chapter, you will only write what you have researched and what research activities you used. In the next chapter, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions. You can write following chapters about findings and analysis using same themes (see below) for the sub-titles.

You can use following research themes as separate sub-titles:

• Subject you are going to research (this will be primary research you conducted; the secondary research about subject will be in literature review)

o This is anything done by you, and it could be such:o Online questionnaire – you could ask your Facebook friends to comment on your

project idea and give you some additional ideas how you can make it better.o Get the feedback from your lecturers and comment on it. o You can contact companies, council, artist depending on what is your project about to

get their opinion on your project idea. o You can use your phone or tablet to research, take photos of possible locations and

places that you can use in your project.

• Target audience

Ask yourself questions: Who? What? Where?

o Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at?

25

Page 26: CONTENTS Web viewWord. 2. 1. st. May. Plan what Environments I will be creating . and find images of environments to be a base for the sounds I will create. PowerPoint. ... Attack

GO TO CONTENTS

Department of Media and Communication

o What type of audience is it? Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume.

o Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about your target audience demographic. (secondary)

o You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about your audience.

• Skills and techniques

o Come up with the plan of what skills and techniques you will need to research to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project.

o For example, you can watch tutorials or read about how to achieve specific skills and techniques that you will need for your project (secondary)

o Experiment with range of skills yourself (primary)

• Production research

o Explain what and how: o People needed for the production/availability (how: emails, Facebook, Skype

conversation, etc.) o Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it successfully

(how: the internet, media books, etc.) o Production schedule (how: create your own) o Budget (How: secondary internet, primary ask yourself) o Recce research/location needed (how: take images, contact individuals for permission,

etc.) o Health and safety research ( How: take images, check locations yourself, ask for

permission) o Visual ideas (storyboard optional) (How: take images, create sketches, get inspired by

other people ideas, etc.) o Props (how: make a list, ask to borrow, make it, buy it, use what you have)o Production (techniques, hardware, workflow) ( how: research what you need / how:

try it yourself) o Post -production (Edit, colour correction, VFX, etc. ( how: read, watch how other

people/professionals do it, try it yourself)

List all research activities; what activities you conducted to answer your questions and collect the data? Write about the data you collected; your choice of data presentation and how you structured your data analysis.

The research activities should be identified e.g:-

Observations (observational drawings; using photography, video and audio to collect data)

Documents analysis (written, but also video and audio documents) Workshops Interviews

CHAPTER 4

Research Findings

In this chapter, you will summarise the collected data and the statistical treatment, and/or mechanics, of analysis. You should start this paragraph by briefly restating the topic/theme of your project (take it from Chapter 1).

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised data. Select method of presenting data carefully.

In a quantitative study, the results usually begin with a description of the sample (e.g., sample size, description of participants who were excluded and why, handling of missing data). Next, descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies/percentages for categorical variables, means, standard deviations, and ranges for continuously measured variables) are presented.

In a qualitative study, the results often include many quotes from participants who were interviewed. Here you should also present your non-textual elements such as photos, videos, audio files, maps, tables, charts, mind maps, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis, etc.

Data analysis

What strategies did you use to analyse your data? What did you find out?

Conclusion - How did the research help me with my project?

What did you learn from your research and how it informed your project?

CHAPTER 5

My Project

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production

Produce Pre-Production Portfolio which will formally define your project (location survey; risk assessment; treatment; script; budget; schedule etc.).

Pitch your proposal to the production board (video recording of your production board presentation)

Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume

Production Project management techniques, (notes of team meetings; production and post-

production schedules; call sheets, etc.) Team and individual performance monitoring (weekly check against schedule) Development – Demonstrate development (photos from the shoot, screenshots from

computers). Keep daily production and post-production diary and reflect on your production process.

Post-production Describe post post-production of your project. Assess your production and post-production process. Describe, and critically analyses any

production problems and the solution you experienced.

CHAPTER 7

Project Evaluation

Critically evaluating your final media project against the agreed requirements and parameters. Answer following questions:

Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any

influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happens if). How did it affect your

development? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what

comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to

help you with this Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage

to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your

brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or

worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?
