Areas of Interest: Please indicate areas specific to the AP program that you would like additional information about.
AP Program - SFMHS offers close to 20 AP courses where students are exposed to some of
the most rigorous coursework available to high school students. Besides a weighted GPA,
students can potentially earn college credit in high school on our campus. Most incoming
freshman start their AP experience with AP Human Geography/Critical Thinking.
AP Capstone Certificate/Diploma - The capstone program requires students to complete
two courses designed to elevate the students’ research, writing and presentation skills. AP
seminar is taken first in sophomore or junior year followed by AP research. Successful
completion and a passing score on their exams earns students the AP capstone certificate.
If students wish to pursue the AP capstone diploma they must pass an additional 4 AP
exams in subjects of the students choosing.
Course of Study Tracks: Although you do not need to be enrolled in an academy to pursue any part of the AP program, students interested in pursuing an academy at SFMHS may wish to enroll in AP courses that best support that academy and their potential future college major or career goal. Below are potential study tracks that can be taken in conjunction with our academies. The courses listed are not required in anyway but can help you identify future courses of interest as you plan your high school career.
Please see the reverse side for academy and student interests.

SFMHS has a mentoring program in place specifically designed to support the needs of our AP students. Students are paired with a mentor who will support them through all four years of their highschool experience. The mentor assists with goal setting, time management, course selection, and study skills to maximize the student’s success in their AP courses and their pursuit of a post-secondary education.

AP Human Geography Instructor: Ms. Ferrante Room: 232 E-mail: [email protected] Phone: 239-561-0060 x330 Course Description: The AP Human Geography course is equivalent to an introductory college-level course in human geography. The course introduces students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth’s surface. Students employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine socioeconomic organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their research and applications.

AP Scholar Designations and Awards Listed below are the designations for different AP Scholar recognitions. A student can easily be an AP Scholar by their senior year and be able to put that on college applications. The College Board offers several awards to select students who take Advanced Placement (AP) exams. Each year, the AP program recognizes students who have performed exceptionally well on AP examinations. Exams are taken in May. The following designations can be earned and are awarded upon graduation:
Designation Criteria AP Scholar
Grade of 3 or better on THREE or more AP exams
AP Scholar with Honor
Grades of 3 or better on FOUR or more AP exams and an average of 3.25 on all AP exams taken
AP Scholar with Distinction
Grades of 3 or better on FIVE or more AP exams and an average of 3.5 on all AP exams taken
National AP Scholar
Grades of 4 or better on EIGHT or more AP exams and an average of 4 on all AP exams (must be a student in the U.S.)
AP Capstone Certificate
Grades of 3 or better in the AP Seminar course and in the AP Research course
AP Capstone Diploma
Grades of 3 or better on 4 AP exams AND Grades of 3 or better in the AP Seminar course and in the AP Research course
Comparing AP and IB Advanced Placement (AP) A student only has to take the AP courses that he/she chooses or is interested in (i.e. AP science, AP English). A student can earn college credit in more than one course per curriculum area (i.e. can earn credit in AP Biology and AP Chemistry). AP students can take as few or as many 4-19 AP courses during 4 years of high school. A student earns credit as they complete the AP exam in a specific course, provided they get a score of a 3 or above on the exam. A student has the potential to earn more college credit taking AP courses, as she/he can begin earning AP credit (college credit) during freshman and sophomore years. Students in AP classes have the time available to experience all that high school has to offer (homecoming, prom, clubs, arts, athletics etc.). AP students have more flexibility in their course scheduling so that they can also enroll in JROTC or OJT if they choose as well as pursue many other extracurricular activities.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
A student has to take and pass an IB course in all curricular areas (1 science, 1 English, 1 language etc.). A student may only take 1 IB course per area of interest and therefore is limited to the amount of credit they can earn. (IB Biology OR IB Chemistry, not both.) 6 classes ONLY! A student will only earn college credit in an IB course if she/he passes the IB exam at the end of her/his second year in that course. They may take AP courses their freshman or sophomore years, but they must fill their schedule with the Pre-IB courses first. Students in the IB program must also complete 150 creative action service (CAS) hours, do an Extended Essay research project (EE), and complete a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course. IB students have very few elective slots available during their high school career. IB students only get the IB diploma and college credit if they finish all the courses, meet the pass rate on all exams, and complete the CAS & EE requirements.

Comparing AP and Dual Enrollment Advanced Placement (AP)
AP teachers see students for a minimum of 168 minutes/week and AP study hall periods and tutoring sessions are available weekly. AP students have opportunity to practice skills in summer boot camps, writing clinics, with their mentors and are with their peers where they can form study groups. AP courses are designed around inquiry and high level thinking skills that immerse students in the content to improve their depth of understanding. AP courses provide students with an opportunity to be assessed in many different ways allowing them to protect their GPA. Your grades in your AP courses go on your high school transcript. Selective colleges would be much
more inclined to transfer in AP credits
as opposed to dual enrollment from
FSW. AP is much more prestigious
since it is a worldwide program.
Remain on campus and part of the
SFMHS community and family.
Dual Enrollment
In college class you don’t get as much
face time with professor.
Expected to be able to study
independently. They don’t “hold
your hand” and train you how to
study.
College courses can be a lot of lecture
that is built on memorization.
Grades are often solely based on
tests. You have a total of 4 grades
and that is it. Bomb a test, your
grade suffers and you can’t recover.
Dual enrollment grades are part of
your permanent college transcript.
Fail a class in dual enrollment and it is
very difficult to improve your college
GPA.
What is your future plan? Are you
transferring before finishing your AA
degree? AA degrees will transfer, but
sometimes credits don’t transfer and
if they do, they will only count as
elective credits.
Off campus you may miss some of
the social experiences of high school.
Comparing AP and AICE (Cambridge) Advanced Placement (AP) AP is the oldest of the rigorous academic programs. It has been around since the 1950’s. A student can earn college credit in more than one course per curriculum area (i.e. can earn credit in AP Biology and AP Chemistry). AP students have the option of pursuing the capstone certificate that teaches similar skills to AICE’s global perspectives and research course. A student earns credit as they complete the AP exam in a specific course, provided they get a score of a 3 or above on the exam. AP students have more flexibility in their course scheduling so that they can also enroll in JROTC or one of our academies if they choose.
AICE AICE is the newest of the rigorous academic programs. Diploma was first awarded in 1997. A student must pursue one credit from each required disciplines which may limit a student’s choices based on their area of interest. Students must complete a global perspectives and research course to earn the diploma. A student’s college credit is dependent on them completing the entire AICE diploma program.
IB students only get the AICE diploma and college credit if they finish all the courses, meet the pass rate on all exams, and complete the global perspectives and research course requirements.
