GENERAL INFORMATION 2018

AppointmentsOut of school appointments should be made outside school hours. If this is not possible, and the appointment takes place during class time, the student must present a note, or dentist’s card, at the College Office before signing out to leave the school grounds, and must sign in at the Office on their return.

AttendanceThe College is responsible for all students while they are at school, therefore their whereabouts must be known from 8:45 am to 3:10 pm. Parents can ring the Attendance Officer on extension 828 and register an absence on the day. If it is known in advance that a student will be absent for a few days, the College should be notified. Requests for longer term absences must be in writing and addressed to the Principal.A Truancy Officer is employed by the College to liaise with families over attendance matters.

BehaviourStudents are under the control of the College from the time they set out for school in the morning until they arrive home in the afternoon. This is important, and it explains why the College is vitally concerned with matters of dress, behaviour and rules of the road.Students must obey the rode code when using a bicycle or motor vehicle to and from school. Students are expected to go straight home after school and not loiter in streets or around shops.

Contacting Students During ClassesThis is discouraged as it is not always convenient to the office and teaching staff. Due to safety considerations parents / caregivers and others must report to the school office on arrival in the school grounds. Under no circumstances can we have the public wandering through the school.

IllnessThose students who feel ill must report to the College Office. They must not in any circumstances go home without first reporting to

the Office, as it is possible a seriously ill student may be in need of assistance without either the school or the parents becoming aware of it.Please ensure that a second contact name and phone number is available on the College database to allow us to contact an adult during the school day if your student is sick.We do not allow students to remain in our sickbay for extended periods during the day.

Base Donation:This provides for the educational, cultural, sporting activities and social activities, prizes and sundry expenses on behalf of the students as approved by the Board of Trustees. Donations are as follows (including GST):

$95 for one student or $140 for two or more from one family

Leaving the GroundsDuring the day students are NOT permitted to leave the school grounds. Students will NOT be issued with a lunch pass. No student will be permitted to go to the shops, they need to use the school canteen or have a lunch with them.

Elective Parent ChargesFees may be charged for any materials that a student will keep, consume or take home. These fees must be paid to receive or partake in an activity and must be paid within Term 1 to ensure a student can remain in that course. They can be paid by automatic payment or EFTPOS. The cashier is available from 8am to 4pm each day.

Dropping Students off at SchoolDue to the continued congestion of vehicles and fast traffic in the staff carpark and the undue risk that this presents to students and staff we now close the front entry gate prior to the end of the school day. We ask that you do not use the exit gate to enter the staff carpark at this time.We also request that you do not park illegally outside the school gates as this creates a hazard to both pedestrians and traffic.

ELITE PERFORMING ARTSThis course challenges students to share their talents in drama, dance, music and singing in a class dedicated to performance. Students will work together to produce musical theatre pieces. They will be trained in stage use, performative technique, direction, and production elements. In 2018 Mount Maunganui College will run a Year 9 Performing Arts option class of talented students in the areas of Drama, Dance, and Singing. Entrance is by way of an audition that will be held at the college in Term 4.

EACH CANDIDATE MUST COMPLETE AN AUDITION TO GAIN RIGHT OF ENTRY:

DRAMA: Perform a 2-3 minutes monologue from a play

DANCE: Perform a 2 minute dance piece in a genre of your own choosing, and provide a backing track

SINGING: Perform a song of your choice, and provide a backing track

WHAT IS DESIGN LEARNING?Students are invited to apply to be part of a class that will undertake an integrated learning programme. Students in this class will learn some core curriculum objectives in a setting where they are able to design meaningful projects. These project experiences will allow for a deeper engagement with knowledge than is often possible in regular class settings. Alongside the knowledge gained through project work students will also strengthen capabilities and dispositions that will be valuable for life beyond secondary school. The programme and environment will allow for:• Purposeful integration of core curriculum knowledge and skills• Authentic projects to be undertaken using a design thinking framework• The explicit building of capabilities such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking,

perseverance, resilience, communication and collaboration

HOW DO I BECOME PART OF IT?It is an expectation that students are already self-managing so that they will be able to cope with the integrated nature of the curriculum in this class. The learning environment will be suited to those students that like learning at their own pace and often have a real passion or strong area of interest. SPORTS PERFORMANCEWHAT IS SPORTS PERFORMANCE?The Mount Maunganui College Institute of Sports Performance aims to build all-round successful people, not just successful athletes. This is evident by a high percentage of Senior Leadership positions being filled by Sports Performance students.We will continue to develop our relationships with outside providers with either a Sports Science or Outdoor Education focus. Sports Performance testing and Sports Science workshops will continue to be a prominent aspect of the Institute moving into the future. Students will set fitness and sporting achievement goals and will work towards these over the year.

HOW DO I BECOME PART OF IT?Sports Performance teachers will visit contributing schools in Term 3 to speak to interested students. An application form is to be completed and returned to the college by 31 October. Teachers will also speak to staff at the contributing schools to assist in talent identification of suitable students if need be. Students will be selected to visit the college to undertake a series of practical activities and testing. Following these processes, students will then be selected into the course.

TESTING DAYThe practical testing day will take place on Monday 6 November 2017. Students will be required to be at Mount Maunganui College gymnasium at 8:40am sharp. Students will complete a series of testing based on the various components of fitness. Students will then have lunch, and undergo a series of games and activities to test their game sense and awareness. Students must have a packed lunch, water bottle, footwear and appropriate clothing for testing. At the end of the testing the students can be collected from the Mount Maunganui College gymnasium at 2:30pm from the Macville car park end.

BEHAVIOURAL EXPECTATIONSMembership of the Sports Performance Institute is a privilege and carries responsibilities in training and performing within sporting codes as well as maintaining academic learning. Behaviour in and around school will have a bearing on continuation within the Sports Performance Institute. All students will be expected to behave with maturity and responsibility, display a positive attitude towards all aspects of their programme and towards school life in general. Performance, achievement and behaviour will be evaluated at the end of each year. This evaluation will be used to determine continued selection for the following year’s Institute programme.

Note: Students with exceptional ability in sports or performing arts will be assessed separately by the College.We invite parents / caregivers who believe their child to be gifted or talented in any of the above areas, to register their child (see below) so that further information can be collated.The College GATE Facilitator works with Year 8 teachers at our contributing schools to best identify gifted and talented students. Please read both pages of this document carefully before signing and returning to the main office. Internet access is available to students and teachers at Mount Maunganui College. The Internet offers vast and diverse resources to both students and staff. This service to teachers and students will help to promote educational excellence in our school by facilitating resource sharing, communication, and skills in finding and using information and innovative teaching programmes. The Internet is an electronic highway connecting thousands of computers worldwide and millions of individual users.Students and staff have access to:

Use of another organisation’s network or computing resources must comply with the rules appropriate for that network. Transmission of any material in violation of any NZ regulation is prohibited. 2. Network Etiquette - Users are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These include (but are not limited to) the following:

i. Be polite. Do not get abusive in your messages to others.

ii. Use appropriate language. Do not swear or use any other inappropriate language. Illegal activities are strictly forbidden.

iii. Do not reveal personal addresses, phone numbers, or passwords of students or staff of Mount Maunganui College, including you.

iv. Note that computer use, Internet use and electronic mail (e-mail) is not guaranteed to be private. People who operate the system do have access to all aspects of the network. Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities may be reported to the authorities.

v. Do not use the network in such a way that you would disrupt the use of the network by other users.

vi. All communications and information accessible via the network should be assumed to be private property (i.e., copyrighted).

vii. Hate mail, harassment, discriminatory remarks and other antisocial behaviours are prohibited on the network. Therefore, any messages should not contain profanity, obscene comments, sexually explicit material, and expressions of bigotry or hate.

2. Security - Security on any computer system is a high priority, especially when the system involves many users. If you feel you can identify a security problem on the Internet, you must notify the System Administrator or the Principal. Do not demonstrate the problem to other users. Users shall not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, other data, or passwords belonging to other users, or misrepresent other users on the network. Attempts to gain unauthorised access to system programs or computer equipment will result in cancellation of user privileges. Downloading of information must be first approved by the teacher in charge once students have been advised that this process is allowed. Any user identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with other computer systems may be denied access to school computers.

3. Vandalism - Vandalism will result in cancellation of privileges as well as other consequences. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm, modify, or destroy computer hardware, data of another user, Internet, or any of the other networks that are connected to the Internet backbone. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses.

4. Inappropriate Use - Mount Maunganui College teachers and The Board of Trustees through the Principal will deem what is inappropriate use. The Principal may request the suspension or termination of computer use of any user who violates these acceptable use practices.

Our school believes in using a range of environments and experiences to enhance our students’ learning. At Mount Maunganui College we are fortunate to have ready access to the beach, the Mount, and other places in our area and beyond. We are also close to various community facilities, such as ASB Baypark Arena and the Art Gallery. These areas are rich learning environments for our students both in and out of school. Our school values the concept of providing students with opportunities. Thus some of the learning for students occurs beyond the school site and this document is seeking your consent for your child/ren to participate in such learning. The Ministry of Education’s EOTC guidelines identify four EOTC activity types, each with recommended types of parental/caregiver consent. In brief they are:
