THE HEADMASTER’S DESK

As parents, we have a real concern for the safety of our children. The recent tragedy at Michaelhouse, which saw a bus overturn, resulting in a young man losing his life, and others left severely injured has amplified our concerns. Some parents have asked us how we manage the safety of our children on bus outings. We therefore thought it prudent to share our policies and procedures that have been in place for a number of years. Our own buses are checked by the driver prior to use and there is a standing item on our weekly management agenda to discuss the buses – condition, servicing requirements and repairs. On that agenda we also flag the licensing requirements and licence renewals for all of our drivers. Buses hired for educational outings are checked by a senior member of staff prior to departure. They are given a visual road worthiness inspection and the validity of bus and driver permits are checked. It is a requirement that all our buses have seat belts and if a bus arrives without seatbelts it is sent back to the depot. We also ensure that a fully equipped medical bag which contains our CIP (Critical Incident Protocol) accompanies the teacher on the outing. The teacher also has the required certification in First Aid. Recently we experienced a discipline problem on one of our buses. The boys had unbuckled their seat belts and were playing around on the bus. Traditionally the teachers sit in front of the bus as was the case in this instance. As a result of this experience we changed the instructions to our teachers and they are now required to seat themselves at the back of the bus to ensure that the boys are always seated and buckled up. Even though we cannot guarantee the absolute safety of our boys when they travel, we can assure you that we will continue to do absolutely everything we can on our side to ensure that our precious cargo reaches the destination safely.
