NOVEMBER PRESENTER
Laura Lein-Svencner
CASA NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 6, 2015
Social 9:00 am - Meeting 9:30 December meeting—Dec 4, 2015
About Laura
Laura Lein-Svencner was raised in Downers Grove IL not far
from her grandfather's farm and resides in Darien Illinois for
the past 30 years. She's continued with her personal studies in
drawing, printmaking, sculpture/assemblage, papermaking and
collage. Seeking inspiration from one artist to another, Laura
has pursued her love of paper; this steady pace of exploration
has led her to become a member of many local and interna-
tional collage groups. She also co-founded the Midwest Col-
lage Society which exhibits throughout the Midwest region.
Her works have won many awards and most recently the 27th
Annual Juried Exhibit with the National Collage Society. Her
work has been published in Watercolor Artist Magazine 2009,
Creating Collage in all Dimensions 2010, Flavors for Mixed Me-
dia 2011, and Painting in Mixed Media 2012. In Fall 2013,
Laura's work was shown in Incite, Dreams Realized and Mixed
Media Artist, from North Light Books. She has gallery represen-
tation at The Flying Pig in Algoma WI. Currently Laura teaches
her techniques of collage at Naperville Art League and at
Mayslake Peabody Estate. During the summer months you will
find her creating in her studio, gardening and walking
in the woods with her dogs but when she's not doing
that you will see her exhibiting at local art fairs and
teaching collage workshops throughout the Midwest.
Laura is an Abstract Mixed Media Collage Artist. She
teaches collage with the heat seal iron method of fus-
ing coated collage papers to many surfaces. If you are
interested in learning this style of collage she has many
classes and workshops scheduled for this year along
with a few exhibits. More details can be found on the
News section of her website….www.lauralein-
svencner.com.
Our weather is beginning to change and this means many of our members will be back to enjoy a calmer climate here in Tucson.
We look forward to seeing all of you again. I still want to meet everyone and perhaps our December function will aid me in doing
so. We plan a potluck and gift exchange and need a volunteer committee to make it happen! There will be a sign-up sheet on
the tables for you willing participants who will make this a great success.
Our presenter, Barbara Cowlin did a wonderful presentation of her work at our October meeting. We then enjoyed her workshop
after the meeting. Our program committee never fails to impress us. From Cleo Teissedre’ and her fabulous skills with the com-
puter in September to Barbara Cowlin offering great creative ideas. Mabel Dean, Carmen Williams, and Patricia Dickson have
done it again! Thank you for all the planning, calls and follow-up it takes. And to those of you who enjoy these presentations,
think about becoming a programs, mini-workshop committee volunteer and talk to them.
Our Exhibit committee has outdone themselves with successfully putting together two shows back to back and giving many of us
an opportunity to share our work with others. The Ravenscroft Small Works and the Habitat for Humanity Show are truly some-
thing to brag about. And they have more planned for us! In this newsletter you will find entry forms and guidelines for our next
show at Ventana Medical Systems in Oro Valley ( a beautiful venue to show in) .
Congratulations go out to our winners at the Ravenscroft “Small Works”show at St. Francis Church and the winners at our Habitat
for Humanity Fall Show. View the winning images in this newsletter as well as on our website.
By the time you receive this newsletter our November Workshop will be presented by Laura Lein-Svencner on the 3rd, 4th, and
5th. ‘Collage, Process and Practice’ will cover the use of color, texture and imagery to be emphasized through the layering of
altered collage papers and acrylics. Using design principles and your own intuitive process, this workshop will engage all levels of
interest in the medium of collage. She has been gracious to work with and is a talented and generous person who gives her all.
The class was filled by early October. She will be the presenter at our November meeting as well. So if you missed her workshop,
join us for her presentation.
CASA will be offering the next 3-Day Workshop on April 6,7,8, 2016. It will be given by Carol Nelson and the title is “Metals and
Mixed Media”. There are already 10 members signed up for this workshop! If you have an interest – sign up now with a $100
deposit. This is being offered at $275 for members and $325 for non-members. See her website for more information. Carol

6801 N. Oracle Road near Ina Road in Tucson. Check her out at: CarolNelsonFine Art.com and enjoy and sign up quickly. We are

CASA EXHIBITS COMMITTEE GUIDELINES The exhibits committee goal is to present your artwork in a professional manner. We ask that you
support us in that role by reading and meeting these requirements.
I - ARTWORK FRAMING/Presentation Requirements:
These are CASA’s requirements for every exhibit, unless otherwise noted on the prospectus.
1. Only original 2D or 3D artwork ready to be hung is acceptable.
2. Artwork must not have been shown in any other CASA exhibit.
3. Giclee prints or reproductions of your artwork are not accepted.
4. Use simple framing, nothing ornate.
5. Unframed canvases 1 3/8” or more in depth must be finished on all sides in a
professional manner.
6. 3 ⁄ 4” deep canvases must be framed.
7. Hanging wire - Either of these is acceptable:
D-rings - These should be attached 1/3 of the way down from the top of the picture.
The center top point of the hanging wire should be 2” below the stretcher
bars or frame so to make the distance proportional to the size of your artwork. We
are attempting to get the work to lie as flat as possible against the wall.
OR
Screw eyes (weight appropriate to the wt. of your piece). These MUST be inserted
INSIDE your frame or canvas side so that the work will lie flat. Follow wiring directions
as stated above in “D-rings”.
8. Use PICTURE HANGING WIRE #20 minimum . Coated wire preferred. (Supplies can
be ordered from Amazon at a reasonable price).
9. Uncoated wire must have the ends wrapped securely to protect installers from cuts.
10. Hanging wire must be taut preferably straight across and tight and 2 inches down from the
top of the stretcher bars or frame.
11. NO saw tooth hangers. The only exception is art narrower than 4”.
12. Plexiglass only on sizes greater than 8” x 10”.
13. NO dirty mats or warped, soiled, poorly framed, or fragile artwork will be accepted.
14. Artwork may not be copied or derived, in whole or in a major significant part, from the
work of another artist without his/her permission.
15. CASA or its representative juror reserves the right to refuse any entry that does not con
form to these requirements.
16. All artwork will be inspected before it is accepted for jurying.
17. LABELS must be on the back of your artwork. The labels are included in the prospectus.
II - PROSPECTUS/Entry Form
The prospectus/entry form is available to be printed from our website. A few copies may be
available at the meetings. These have all the information you need for each exhibit. If an item says
TBA (to be announced) next to it, you will receive an email when that information is available. We
can’t always schedule items before the prospectus goes out. Each entrant is responsible for
keeping a copy of a show prospectus to refer to for dates and times.
III - VI - JURY PROCESS
Work is juried during CASA meetings. Bring art before 9:30am to jury room at St Francis. It will be
checked for correct framing requirements before it is checked in to be juried. On jury day the only people
permitted in the jury room are the appointed volunteers. Volunteer if you want to see what’s going on.
Pick up art after the CASA meeting. Acceptance into an exhibit is designated by a 3/4”RED DOT on your
artwork. Please LEAVE this dot on (UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED) when dropping off artwork; it helps
in tagging the artwork efficiently. IF you have a jpeg of accepted piece, please forward it to the Exhibits
Chair so that we may have it for publicity purposes to advertise the show and/or put it in the CASA
newsletter or website.
IV - JURORS CASA hires jurors that have reached a professional level in their art careers. Every juror brings a unique perspective to an exhibit. It is their job to create a cohesive show. The juror considers the quality of the artwork, venue considerations, and theme if there is one. The number of pieces accepted is deter-mined by the available wall space at the venue as well as the quality of the work. Jurors are paid for their time and expertise.
V - EXHIBIT COSTS
The exhibits committee is self-supporting. Entry fees are based on our best estimate of expenses for an
exhibit. Expenses include: Juror’s fee, monetary prizes, reception expenses, advertising costs and mis-
cellaneous supplies.
VI - VENUE/EXHIBIT SPACES
CASA applies each year to exhibit art at various places in the region. Each venue that invites us to ex-
hibit our work is different. The number of pieces in the show reflects the space available for hanging at
that venue and any restrictions or request the venue may have. Some venues rotate artists/ groups
every two years to keep it fresh, while other are more random.
VII - INSTALLATION of EXHIBIT
Hanging an exhibit is done by a group of volunteers appointed by and under the guidance of the Exhibits
Chair. Volunteer artists load the work into the exhibit space while the designated spotter decides where
work will be hung. Others check in the work and match the labels up with the artwork. After the work is
hung labels are put in place. To facilitate getting the show up quickly the only people permitted in the ex-
hibit space are the volunteers working on the exhibit.
VIII - RECEPTIONS
Receptions are the responsibility of the Receptions Chair who coordinates with the Exhibits Chair. Some
venues will pay all or share the expenses of the reception, while at other exhibit venues it is CASA’s sole
responsibility.
IX - DELIVERY & PICK UP of ART
Artwork must be delivered and picked up at the specified delivery time by the artist or their representa-
tive. It is the artist’s responsibility to find a friend or fellow artist to pickup or deliver artwork if s/he is not
available. This is NOT the responsibility of the exhibits committee.
