Welcome to the South Orangetown Central School District Continuing Education Program

The Fall 2016 Continuing Education Program is beginning soon. New Coursesbeing offered this year include: Wading Through Watercolors with Jayne Conte,

Come to My Kitchen, and Scrapbooking. Of course, all of your favorites havereturned again: Mat Core, Cardio into Mat, Slimmersize, Zumba, Country Line

Dancing, Volleyball, Genealogy, and Mah Jongg, just to name a few.If you haven’t had the chance to attend any Continuing Education courses, nowis the time to try. Courses such as Shall We Dance, Knitting Essentials, andHow to Apply Makeup are well-attended and feedback has been positive.Interested in learning a new language? Courses in French and Italian are beingoffered. Approaching retirement? Managing Cash Flow in Retirement andSocial Security Savvy will provide you with a wealth of knowledge. Not only willyou have fun learning, you will also get to meet other members of thecommunity.Courses that are geared towards students include Red Cross BabysittingCertification (ages 11-15), Driver’s Education, ACT, and SAT review courses.Please note these specific classes require a separate registration form that is

In my kitchen you will learn to prepare a variety of different recipes. This 4 weekcourse includes a dash of different cultures, and a pinch of kitchen and foodtips. Participants will help prepare and sample each recipe. We will begin ourfirst week with Italian Ricotta Balls followed by Polish Kielbasa Podwawelska,Greek Shrimp Mikrolimano, and ending with Chocolate Creations just in time forthe holidays.

This course is led by a native Parisian. Proper pronunciation andconversation will be the focus. It would be an advantage to have somebackground (vocabulary & grammar) in the French language fromeither high school or college, however not a requirement. Jayne Conte is a graphic designer, painter, and artist. She studied at theFashion Institute of Technology and the Art Students’ League of New York City.Previously, she worked as a creative director for a large publishing companywhere she designed both the interior and covers for textbooks in the collegedivision.Sometimes people can feel out of their depth when exploring new creativeoutlets. “Wading through Watercolors” breaks down the basic techniques ofwatercolors in a relaxing environment with plenty of hands-on instruction. Localartist Jayne Conte combines years of experience and a passion for art in herclass, and helps even the most novice painter create true works of art. Eachweek the class will dive into a new painting - Jayne demonstrating while theclass follows suit. This course will cover many facets of digital photography: frombasic concepts (mega pixels, flash modes, and proper focusingmethods, etc.), to more advanced ideas (the importance ofsensor size, shutter speed, aperture, and RAW shooting, etc.).It will also discuss the differences between Point & Shoot,Mirrorless, and DSLR cameras.In addition this course is ideal not only for those just starting out, but also forthose who want to get better results by learning how to use their camera fully.If you do not have a camera or are looking to upgrade, the first class will coverthe fundamentals of buying a good digital camera.

Follow along with professional make-up artist Carrie Becker, asyou learn how to apply your own make-up with confidence.You will receive hands-on training to help you find the rightcolors and proper techniques to bring out your best features! Supply list will be handed out the first night.

DRIVER EDUCATION FOR STUDENTSCourse Purpose: This course teaches students the laws, defensivedriving techniques, and responsibilities pertaining to driving inNew York State. The course provides 48 hours of instructionover 32 classroom and in-car sessions (each session being90 minutes in length) as mandated by the New York StateDepartment of Education. All instruction is administered bya certified classroom teachers and driving instructors. The in-car portion is conducted in specially equipped cars.

Benefits: Successful completion of the program earns a student a Certificate ofCompletion form (MV-285). This allows a student to obtain a senior license atage 17. Halfway through the semester, the students are given a Pre-LicensingCourse Completion Certificate (MV-278), a requirement for road testappointments. Many insurance companies also offer a 10 - 15% discount on thebase rate of your insurance premium; but please check with your insurancecompany for specifics.

Program Requirements: Students must be at least 16 years of age by the startof the program. Classes are mandatory and attendance will be monitored.Lecture and Road assignments are for 90 minute time blocks. Students attendeach class once a week for approximately 16 weeks from the start of theprogram. All classes are held at Tappan Zee High School. IMPORTANT: Failure to attend all classes will result in forfeiture of certificate.

In-car sessions are assigned on a first registered/first served basis. To request driving times you must fill out an application which can be accessedonline at www.socsdcontinuinged.org. Students will meet at front entrance ofTappan Zee High School at their scheduled times for their in-car lessons.
