It is that time of year again when we say farewell to our Year 11 students and wish them well in their examinations. The pressure has been building for some time but I am delighted at the way the vast majority of students have responded and congratulate them all on the extra time they have been putting in at school to ensure they are as well prepared as possible. I should also like to thank my staff who have been running additional classes after school on most days of the week, including classes during the holiday periods. As we approach the half-term break, I remind all Year 11 students and their parents/carers that the final efforts need to continue through the holiday. A good balance of work, revision and practice, together with opportunities to rest and play will ensure they are as well prepared as possible for

the exams that continue through much of June. Teachers will still be available to them after the break and up to the final exam in each subject area. We anticipate them achieving some excellent results and wish them all good luck!I should also remind you at this time that all students and their family are invited back in November to the Awards Evening, when we present them with their certificates, celebrate their achievements and generally catch-up with how they have been getting-on since leaving. The evening is a very enjoyable and fairly informal occasion so we hope as many of you as possible can join us. We always finish with a buffet in the dining-hall so there is the opportunity to talk with teachers and catch-up with friends. Details will follow.I add that once a student has been a member of Willingdon Community

deemed as always being our students. That means that at any time in the future we can be of any help, please do contact us and we shall do our best to do so. Whether it is a reference, advice, information or support there will always be someone here who can provide what you need, so do stay in touch.

Year 10 and Future KS4 Students - This Time Next Year This is the last year in which the examination system that has been running for a number of years will operate. As we have mentioned to Year 10 parents/carers and to those of you with children in Year 9, there is a radical change to the examination system which will have a very significant impact on how students prepare for their examinations. No longer will examinations include coursework, apart from some aspects of certain practical subjects. Controlled assessments and modular examinations will go and all will be

focused on terminal examinations. We have analysed the picture in relation to how current students are being examined and how they would be if they were taking the examinations next summer. Currently students will be sitting between approximately 5 and 9 examinations in the Exam Hall this summer. That will contribute to them achieving between 5 and 14 GCSEs. Next summer, the equivalent students will be gaining the same number of GCSEs but actually taking between 10 and 23 examinations in the Exam Hall. A very different picture to that which students have been used to.The impact of this is that students will start to experience many more in-school practice examinations, throughout their time at the school; they will need to be very organised in the way they keep, present and manage their work in school; and there will be a much sharper focus on the need to revise effectively. The school is preparing students for these changes but it is also important that parents are aware of them and, where possible, help their children to adjust to the new ways of working. Simple things like ensuring your child is keeping all his/her work neatly, in well maintained books,

organised in a way that will assist any future revision. Providing an appropriate work place at home that is free from distractions and ensuring that they are consistently applying the correct amount of time to homework, including monitoring their school planner. As students progress through the school we will keep you up to date with the changes and advise you of what we and you can do together to help your child be as successful as possible.

Holidays in Term Time – Penalty Notice I am well aware that the vast majority of you are aware of East Sussex’s and the school’s approach to the taking of holidays in term time. We do not approve of them and as a general

rule do not authorise them. In order to strengthen our approach, we are in future, in line with county policy, going to request the East Sussex Attendance Service to issue Penalty Notices to parents where we deem the absence to be unacceptable. Such a notice will incur a fine of £50 per parent, per child and may rise to £100 for any repeated incidents. We do feel that as near full time attendance as possible is an essential aspect of a successful education and would actively encourage you, during these important years, to resist the temptation of taking a holiday in term time.I wish you all a very restful half-term break.

8JG have recently completed their ‘£1 Project’ for Children with Cancer. The £1 Project involves everyone in the tutor who decide a way to make more money from the pound they received from the school/tutor. For example some people did a sponsored bike ride, a sponsored swim, quiz games etc. This is a great way to raise money for a good cause.Children with Cancer is an organisation that gives opportunities for children with cancer to live a happy a life as possible. They also take groups of the children out on trips with some of the

money that people have raised/donated to show them that there are other children experiencing the same as they are. This helps them to understand, and also gives them a chance to have a good time like a healthy child would. The money that is raised also goes towards research and awareness to help fight cancer and how to recognise when something is wrong.Overall, 8JG raised just over £478 for this charity. We are all very proud that everyone has tried to make an effort to help children of all ages suffering with cancer. Hopefully our money can go towards making another child happy and towards the research to help everyone with cancer.Written By: Hannah Ginno, Molly Shepherd-Chandler, Olivia Langford. 8JG.

Congratulations to the Year 9 rugby team that finished second place in the partnership 10-a-side rugby competition held at Eastbourne Rugby Club. The Willingdon team beat Hailsham Community College 28-0 and drew 0-0 against Cavendish in a very close encounter. In the final Willingdon lost to a very strong Lewes Priory team.

All students are welcome to attend, just arrive at 3pm on the tennis courts in your PE kit. You can bring your own racket or borrow a school racket for the sessions. For more information see Mr Gordon in the PE Office.

The (now) annual Community Fair took place on Thursday 9th May 2012. During the day Year 7 students had the chance to talk to representatives from a number of organisations who gave up their time to take part. The response from the students was very positive, 100% of

students stated that they felt that they had left the event having learnt something new about the some of the organisations that operate in Eastbourne. Visitors to the school also found the experience very positive with them all commenting on how well behaved our Year 7 students are and what insightful questions they asked. After school the students took over the canteen and took to the stage. Students used the event to raise money for their nominated charities. CB’s Sweeties stall seemed particularly popular, as did 10SAS’s game of chance. Thanks also to 9DF, 10GM, 10LG, 8SR, 8SSH, 9CA and 8CEA who all had stalls. With over £300 raised during the course of the afternoon the event was a huge success. Entertainment was provided by the Miss Howard’s

dancers who took to the floor with great style and Emily Dobrine-Noakes and Mark Gleeson, who proved themselves again to be very talented singers. The fair was visited during the day by the Mayor and Mayoress of Eastbourne. The Mayor commented that he had never seen another event like it in local schools and thought that the idea was ‘very impressive’Many thanks to all those involved but especially students Megan Fellows, Ellen Humphreys, Georgina Chadwick, Kierra Harrison and Jack Foley for their excellent organisational skills.

A couple of months ago the art department got an invite to have a space in the Towner Gallery. Miss Walker and class 721 decided to create a big frame filled with our portrait collages, the theme was 'inspirational people.' We chose someone we admire and started to create portraits using only newspaper. Some people chose celebrities, musicians, athletes and family members. Overall we spent about 12 hours on our portraits because we wanted to represent our school well. The Eastbourne Mayor opened the exhibition

on May 10th and it will continue to be open to the public until 9th June.

On Tuesday 19th March 2013 four Year 8 students went to Ratton School to represent Willingdon Community School and take part in the Eastbourne Rotary Challenge. The visit was organised for us by Miss Bolton, the Head of Design & Technology. We were transported by Mark Poole in the mini-bus to Ratton School and at the venue we made our way to their Reception and were taken to meet the other Eastbourne Teams.

For the D&T Rotary Challenge, Bryn Smith, Josh Bennett, Connie Breach and me had to make a sort of bridge in order that a heavy stone could move as far away from a board as possible. Overall it challenged our building skills massively as we had to create an easy, simple and effective way to hold the stone above the ground and get it as far away as possible. We decided to use paper, lollypop sticks, card, cocktail sticks, straws and lots of tape to stick everything

together, I think it worked very well and if we had more time we maybe would have got the stone further away but overall, we did very well and it was a great experience. It helped us work well as a team and made us work with people we wouldn't usually work with.Mollie Ireland 8SSH

We had an hour and a half to complete this challenge. there were 7 schools: Ratton, St. Andrews, St. Bede's,

Cavendish, Bishop Bell, The Eastbourne Academy and us. We finished in 3rd place with a distance of 44 cm behind St. Andrews and St. Bede's making us first of the comprehensive schools. We did extremely well, given the fact that each school was allowed 10 minutes at the start with a teacher, but we didn't have one so we were at a disadvantage from the beginning.
