Lands End to John O’Groats Fancy cycling 1000 miles – 7-8 hours in the saddle each day – for a fortnight? That is the challenge that Shaun Ward, St Laurence’s Executive Manager, has accepted as he cycles from Lands End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) beginning 2nd September. Shaun says: “I have been training intensively the last 24 months with a range of activities, such as 5k and 10k running, long distance cycling, swimming, and in the last few months have returned to an intensive programme of body conditioning with weights called freelectics. This past April, I completed a rigorous training weekend on the cycle. In short, I have been working hard preparing for this challenge.” You can support Shaun on his epic ride by sponsoring him as he raises funds on behalf of the Conservation Trust for St Laurence. The goal is to raise £5000 which will go towards repair of the church’s tower and roof. Letter from the Chairman

Over 70 people from across the United Kingdom attended the “Memorials in the Marches” conference, presented jointly by The Conservation Trust and the Church Monuments Society. Speakers were leaders in their field. Nia Powell of Bangor University provided an overview of the Council of the Marches and commented on its significance to the Welsh people. Sally Badham MBE spoke on the incised slabs in St Laurence’s south transept and parvise room. And Dr Holly Trusted of the V & A focused on the Salwey monument, setting it in the context of other 18th century sculptures. Other lectures discussed the church’s monuments dedicated to the memory of Council of the Marches members. Thank you to all who made this conference a success.

The Ludlow Palmers have adopted the theme of ‘Pilgrimage’ for this coming year. Palmers (a medieval term for pilgrims) and pilgrimages were an important part of medieval life, but they also strike a responsive chord in our modern, ever-changing world. This forthcoming year of ‘Pilgrimage’ will culminate on 28th May 2018 with a special event for all Ludlow Palmers.

Beginning the 27th May 2018, there will be an opportunity to participate in a variety of modern ‘pilgrimages’, starting with a two-day walk from Ludlow to Hereford Cathedral. On the Bank Holiday Monday, 28th May 2018, you can choose whether to cycle to Hereford, walk with the Dean of Hereford Cathedral from Marden to the shrine of St Thomas de Cantilupe, enjoy the wonders of nature through garden visits, or join a coach party to Hereford Cathedral for an afternoon of activities. All ‘pilgrims’ will receive a badge to mark their own journey on the day. During the afternoon, you can enjoy a cream tea in the Cathedral’s gardens and/or attend a special ‘Pilgrims’ Evensong which will be sung by St Laurence’s choir. More details to follow.

Join the Ludlow Palmers - Live History

Subscribers to the medieval Ludlow Palmers Guild paid an annual membership fee (equivalent to £220 in today’s money) to help members “reduced to poverty by theft, fire, shipwreck or other mishap or wrongfully imprisoned anywhere in England, to provide assistance during temporary sickness or incurable disease or as a dowry for sisters of the Guild on their marriage or entry into religion”.

For nearly 300 years, until the Guild’s suppression by Edward VI, the Ludlow Palmers provided St Laurence with financial resources to maintain and enhance the building, as well as enrich Ludlow town life through music and education. The magnificent building, beautiful ceilings, rare medieval stained-glass windows, and historic misericords are a few of the Ludlow Palmers Guild’s legacies to Ludlow and the nation.

Founded in 2006, today’s Ludlow Palmers support the repair and conservation of St Laurence’s fabric and historical treasures. Membership in the modern Ludlow Palmers is based on positions assigned to medieval Guild members: Palmers, Stewards and Wardens. In addition, modern Ludlow Palmers may join the Guild Circle.

We have one advantage over our predecessors six centuries ago. For every charitable gift made by a Ludlow Palmer who pays tax in the UK, the government adds 25% through Gift Aid at no extra cost to the donor. Legacies made in wills are exempt from taxation and can reduce inheritance tax.

To become a Ludlow Palmer, Steward, Warden or Guild Circle member, see page 7 and 8 of this newsletter.

A Palmer’s Tour of Ludlow

Members of the Palmers Gild of the Blessed Mary and St John the Evangelist of Ludlow and visitors to the town are invited to meet John Turnor (aka Mike Beazley), a Ludlow Palmer and formerly a retainer of our noble King Edward IV. He was recently pensioned off from the Yorkist army after the battle of Tewkesbury. He hopes you will join him at 2 o’clock in the afternoon of Friday the 29th of September (the feast day of St. Michael and All Angels) in the churchyard on the north side of St Laurence’s for a gentle walk around the town in the year of our Lord 1472 (A.R. 12 Edward IV) and afterwards at his solar above Olde Gate for a glass of his home-produced mead.

This special walk around Ludlow will last 2½ hours and will include significant sites associated with the medieval Palmers Guild. Cost is £5 per person – all proceeds go to the Conservation Trust for St Laurence. Please book in advance as numbers are limited to 20 people. Send your request for ticket(s) and cheques (made payable to CTSLL) to CTSLL, 2 College Street, Ludlow SY8 1AN.
