Last month, we celebrated Hospital Week and Nurses' Week. We were proud to see many of our colleagues receive individual recognition for going “above and beyond” and grateful for the national awards we achieved as an organization.

Our Medical Staff and Board of Directors honored Dr. Philip Massengill with the 2016 Leadership Award and Dr. Elliot Mayefski with the 2016 Lifetime Achievement

Award. We celebrated these outstanding physicians at the annual Physician Recognition Reception in May. Their service, leadership and expert delivery of healthcare services to our community should serve as an inspiration to all of us.

Congratulations to Kristina Pagan, RN, of Emergency Services for being selected for the Star of the Year Award. Kristina’s service to our patients is extraordinary, going above and beyond to make our patient's hospital experience the best it can be.

We honored many employees last month at our annual Employee Service Awards Dinner. Special congratulations were extended to Arthur Hazlett, Patrick Kerrigan and Bonnie Lacenere for celebrating 45 years of service to our organization. This is an outstanding accomplishment and a true testament to their loyalty and dedication.

Congratulations to Jessica Wood, who took first place in this year’s 1199 Nurse of Distinction Awards for ‘Nurse Preceptor of the Year’ as well as Jennifer Ortiz-Patton, for being awarded ‘First Runner-up for Nurse of Distinction.’ These professionals were selected and earned honors for their dedication to their profession, patients, peers and our medical center. They are true role models for nursing.

I am proud of all that our physicians and staff members have accomplished as well as our national successes that were achieved as a team: Magnet Designation, HIMSS Stage 7, Partners in Performance Silver Award and Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

Please mark your calendar for July 6 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm for a wonderful recognition event on the main campus under the tent in the Conference Room Center parking lot.

From The President & CEO Star Of The Year In conjunction with National Hospital Week, Orange Regional announced its Star of the Year, Kristina Pagan. Kristina is an Emergency Services registered nurse. She was chosen for her compassion toward a patient who was away from home while being treated at Orange Regional and was without a personal cell phone to use to contact his family.

Kristina went above and beyond the call of duty by personally donating half of the funds needed to purchase a new cell phone for this patient. She also initiated a fundraiser for the remainder of the funds needed. “Kristina remained dedicated to her patient and is most deserving of this award,” said President & CEO, Scott Batulis.

The Star of the Year Award is presented by Orange Regional’s All-Star Employee Recognition Committee. Throughout the year, the Committee selects and recognizes staff members who go above and beyond on a daily basis to provide quality healthcare to our community.

The Radiation Oncology Department was touched by a heartfelt project donation, compliments of Jill Farr and Kay Lemon. Jill took on this project as a way to give back. Kay is well known to the department, as they treated her husband several years ago. Jill set out to create “Hope For A Cure” bags. Each beautiful bag is embroidered with an inspirational message and filled with things to make patients feel better during their treatments and to bring them a little bit of comfort. It was a perfect combination; Jill, a generous woman, with a heart of gold, wanting to do a good deed and Kay, a loving and talented woman, who loves spreading joy. Jill and Kay visited the Radiation Oncology Department to deliver these bags for patients currently undergoing treatment.

Awarded For Excellence

Awarded the Highest National Distinction for Excellence in Nursing CareOn May 17, we were notified that our four year Magnet journey had resulted in receiving our Magnet designation. Our nursing department worked incredibly hard, with the support of the entire organization, to make this happen. This is the highest recognition level for nursing care granted to healthcare organizations who demonstrate quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovation in professional nursing practice. We are one in only 6 percent of hospitals in the nation to achieve this tremendous honor.

Nationally Recognized for Quality in Patient CarePartners in Performance Excellence recently announced that Orange Regional was the recipient of their 2015 Silver Award for Performance Excellence, more commonly known as the Baldrige Silver Award. We were recognized for our leadership, workforce engagement and favorable clinical and customer experience outcomes as we journey toward Operational Excellence. We performed very well with criteria that were driven by a rigorous process and national guidelines. This achievement was also a true team effort.

Orange Regional Medical Center has earned several prestigious recognitions in the healthcare industry on a national level. As employees, we should all be proud of our recent accomplishments: Magnet Designation, HIMSS Stage 7, 2015 Silver Award for Performance Excellence and the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

Highest National Award for Use of Electronic Medical RecordsWe have been awarded with the highest designation, Stage 7, for implementing an electronic medical record (EMR) system to improve patient safety and quality of care. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) awarded our organization with Stage 7, the highest level on HIMSS Analytics’ EMR adoption model which is used to track EMR progress at hospitals and health systems. Only 4.2 percent of the more than 5,400 U.S. hospitals received the Stage 7 Award. And, we are one of only three hospitals in New York State to achieve HIMSS Stage 7. It takes an entire team, at every level of the organization, to reach the highest level of EMR utilization.

Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement AwardOur distinction as a designated Stroke Center just became stronger. We recently earned the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Program with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite. The award recognizes our commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite, we had to meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment.

Hospital Week Gratitude A BIG thank you to all of our GHVHS Medical Staff and employees. We truly appreciate your commitment to providing quality care and support each and every day.

On June 1, Orange Regional Medical Group's Hannah Brooks, MD, Medical Director of Breast Surgery and Breast Specialist, hosted a second physician seminar in the Conference Center. The seminar focused on breast care and health education including common breast problems, non-cancerous breast conditions, proper breast self-examination techniques and more. Thank you Dr. Brooks for volunteering your time to educate the community!

On May 28, several Orange Regional staff members competed and finished the second annual Hercules Fitness Challenge held in Middletown! This was a 5K & Obstacle Race that provided not only physical fitness challenges,but mental challenges, as well. Kudos to our Warriors! Update

As a recent addition to our Campus Expansion Project, the inclusion of a fitness trail, which will follow the hospital's ring road, will be a new formalized walkway. This new addition to our campus will encourage healthy activity and showcase the beauty and vitality of our hospital's surroundings. Construction workers have already placed the path where the walkway will be.

This walkway will circle the lot perimeter. The path winds from the main entrance parking lot to the north and then east to the emergency room entrance. The walking area includes rock walls, wetlands lined with trees, brush and natural glacial erratics. With two ponds, a stream, and wooded borders, the campus is an attraction for wildlife including migrating birds.

Last month we offered special thanks to Orange Regional’s employees for their outstanding service and commitment to healthcare in our community. Our appreciation goes out to the Nutrition and Food Services Department for the outstanding job they did creating our fabulous Hospital Week celebrations.

On May 12, Orange Regional held its Annual Employee Service Awards Dinner at West Hills Country Club in Middletown. Employees were honored in recognition of their professional milestones. Scenes From Nurses’ WeekThroughout Nurses’ Week (May 6-13), Orange Regional’s nurses participated in various activities including nursing seminars, lectures and ice cream socials. The educational and fun-filled week allowed the nursing staff to celebrate and explore what the nursing profession has to offer, including caring in nursing. The week ended with Orange Oscars that were presented to individual nursing departments. Thank you to all of our nurses for your patient care services!

The Blessing of the Hands event during Nurses’ Week is an Orange Regional Medical Center tradition. Deacon Richard Trapani and members of the Pastoral Care program work together to construct an interfaith, non-denominational ceremony that thanked our Nurses and recognized the extraordinary work they do each day. Because human touch is such an important component of health care, the blessing of hands is especially meaningful to physicians, nurses and other hospital staff.

Team ORMC was in full force at this year’s Relay for Life of Pine Bush! Hospital staff, including members of our Oncology and Administration departments, participated in the walk to support the fight against cancer.

Moving into the New Physician Office Building & Cancer Center

What education is coming your way very soon?

Physician Office Building/Cancer Center (POB/CC)Construction on the new POB/CC will be complete before we know it! For those of you who will be working in these areas, you will have to complete an orientation program that is made up of three parts:

• A curriculum comprised of a series of courses to be completed on HealthStream • A building tour • Your department specific orientation (that could include new equipment training)

What about the timeline for the orientation?

We anticipate: • The curriculum complete and assigned to you by the end of June, beginning of July • Building tours for the cancer center and floors 1 & 2 of the POB to begin by August 8th • Department specific orientation will occur from mid-August through mid-September 2016

General Annual Education 2016 (AED)As usual we anticipate getting Annual Education assigned to you by end of July, beginning of August. There will be some overlap in modules between the POB/CC courses and AED. You will not have to do the courses twice. Once you have completed the course in for the POB/CC orientation, you will get ‘credit’ for that course for AED. For example, all Environment of Care courses are required for both the POB/CC orientation and AED so once you do them under the POB/CC curriculum, they will show as complete for AED.
