DATES TO REMEMBER

A Note from your President….

This year is almost over. Where has it gone?

We had an exciting time at this year’s Conference. I want to thank the Coordinator, Carolyn

Thomas, the entire Eastern Region, the State Board, Agents and Advisors for all they did to make the Conference a success. Knoxville was beautiful; the trees were still putting on a show!

Since we’ve only had one State Newsletter pub-lished this year, I have asked Phyllis Narus if she would help out in this area. She agreed to do a spe-cial “Year-End” edition. This is just one of the many things I love about being a part of the FCE organiza-tion. If you have a need, usually if you just ask someone will step up to help.

This is the time of year where we get busy with planning activities for the new year so be sure and check on those without family nearby that might need your help.

Please remember to keep track of your CVU hours (more information under VP for Public Policy) and also State Projects you or your club participate in (more information under VP for Programs).

The Heart of FCE (for nafce members only) nomina-tions are due to me by February 15th and the Char-acter Counts Essay and Art contest winners are due to me by March 2nd.

Don’t forget we offer FCL classes twice a year and more information can be found under VP for Public Policy.

I am looking forward to 2018 and hope I am able to attend more region activities across the state.

I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and hope that it is happy and healthy!

EASTERN REGION PRESIDENT’S REPORT

What a great time we had at the State Conference 2017! In my opinion, one of the best opportuni-ties was entering and/or viewing cultural arts. We had many outstanding, handmade pieces—from a very large crocheted Lord’s Prayer to beautiful paintings and drawings, woven baskets and other entries in many different categories. I owe a debt of thanks to those who helped make Cultural Arts a success. Their dili-gence to detail and willingness to work long and hard hours made my job much easier. Next year the Cultural Arts will be expanded to include 10 new catego-10 new catego-10 new catego-10 new catego-riesriesriesries. The 36th annual TAFCE State Conference was hosted by Eastern Region at the Knoxville Hilton Hotel November 5-8, 2017. There were 264 members par t i c ipat ing dur ing the conference. One hundred eight (108) members joined the Star of Knoxville Dinner Cruise which was very enjoyable and a huge success. Thirty three (33) members participated in the tour of Bush Beans. Two hundred sixteen members (216) attended the delicious Tuesday night banquet and enjoyed the outstanding performance by The Three Tenors and their very accomplished piano player.

Our Opening Session guest speaker, retired NASA employee Greg Lohning, gave a very informative and entertaining speech on behind the scenes of astronaut and space program events and training. Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett gave a welcome to Knox County speech and entertained us with stories of his family’s relationship with famous historian and author, Alex Haley.

A huge thank you to all of the class teachers, speakers, workers and volunteers behind the scenes, the Gift Shop workers, the Hospitality Room workers, Hostesses, and especially to Conference Chair Carolyn Thomas and Eastern Region board members.

Eastern Region board members and committee members are always pleased to host and meet with members from across Tennessee. We know that next year’s State Conference hosted by Western Region will be a wonderful educational and entertaining success. Western Region’s “Bee FCE: Bee Amazing, Buzz Into Memphis” promotional presentation at the Tuesday night banquet was outstanding. We have never seen so many friendly and beautiful bees fly into Knoxville!

I Stand!

I am a proud American who loves Old Glory. I get goose bumps every time I hear our national an-

them, and tear up while standing with my right hand over my heart while I sing along—always have,

always will. I stand to show this symbol of my country the highest respect it deserves. I have flags

near the TVs in my home, and I stand in my home in respect for our national anthem.

Much has been made of this issue of standing over the last few years, especially since 9-11. Then an

unpatriotic, over-paid athlete started this blatant disrespect of kneeling during the national anthem.

His protesting should have been done elsewhere, not at the job he was paid to do, nor to a symbol

that thousands of true patriots have fought for, and for which many have died serving. Now, others

have blindly followed him in this disrespect, and it is shameful.

At a recent event, during the singing of a patriotic song, a person (maybe confused as to what that

song was—“oh, is that our anthem?”) decided to stand. One by one, others followed suit, until only

myself and two others on the stage remained seated; ditto during another patriotic song later, with

four of us on the stage remaining seated. Criticism of our not standing showed up on evaluations for

this event. Let me tell you: I am not a follower in a “cause” I find unjust or simply not correct.

Those of us on that stage were elected to be leaders, not followers.

We have one song that is our national anthem, and that one song is regarded the highest honor by

our standing at attention, right hand over our heart in pledging allegiance to, and showing respect

for, our U.S. Flag. This one song is The Star-Spangled Banner. The U.S. Code protocol says that we

stand only for the national anthem. U.S. Code, Title 36, Subtitle 1, Part A, Chapter 3, Section

301-National Anthem (http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/36C3.txt)

Don’t get me wrong, I love the other patriotic songs, like God Bless America. They are great songs

that I love to hear and sing along with. However, they should not be treated with the same honor

given to our national anthem. The only song we salute is the national anthem (standing at atten-

tion—military in salute; non-military with right hand over heart), and we stand to hold it in highest

regard. We don’t present colors to other songs, and while they are wonderfully patriotic songs, they

should not be accorded the same honor as The Star-Spangled Banner.

I stand—for the national anthem: The Star-Spangled Banner!
