Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Family Medicine Summit Planning Committee, welcome to the 2020 Family Medicine Summit in Banff, Alberta! We are proud to carry on the 65-year long tradition of sharing best practice and building community.

Our committee began planning this program moments after the closing session last year. I can assure you that we were thoughtful in our choices and hope you enjoy the selection of keynotes, workshops, and short snappers. As always, we greatly appreciate your feedback on the conference, so please complete your evaluation forms! I would like extend the warmest appreciation and thanks to our speakers for sharing their time and expertise.

This year we introduce a featured display space for provincial researchers called the Research Revue. It provides an opportunity for attendees to participate in up and coming local research. I invite you to stop by our Sponsor Showcase in Hawthorn B/C. Our displays are represented solely by non-profit organizations and stakeholders interested in serving your needs. Be sure to fill out the Sponsor Passport game for a chance to win great prizes.

Don’t miss our Research Poster Presentation & Summit Welcome Reception on Friday, March 6th, complimentary for everyone. Drop by to celebrate the outstanding research projects that are on display and enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and a beverage while connecting with colleagues. As a milestone year, we are excited to bring back our widely-popular family night. This year, we pay homage to our birth decade at the Outta Sight Family Night. Get decked out in your pick of 60s fashion and join us for a fun evening of dinner, games, and dancing.

Following the conclusion of daily sessions on Friday and Saturday, relax and mingle with colleagues over refreshments in the Doctors’ Lounge at Diva’s. Simply show your nametag to receive the daily specials.

Once again, thank you for choosing to attend the Summit. We hope that you have an enjoyable conference and take time to connect, learn, and celebrate.

Carolyn Nowry , MD, CCFP Summit Planning Committee Chair

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the ACFP’s Board of Directors, welcome to the 2020 Family Medicine Summit!

We are excited to host you at our premier gathering—celebrating 65 years of camaraderie and thoughtful knowledge exchange.

As our flagship event, the Summit kicks off our year of high-quality continuing medical education and professional development programming. We also dedicate time to honour and celebrate the professional excellence of our peers.

This year we are launching a Friday Morning Member Forum as part of the Summit. The workshop will explore the Future of Family Medicine and help the ACFP better understand what our members needs and concerns are. There is so much uncertainty in our profession but the one thing we can count on for sure is our member community.

I encourage you to take some time this weekend to connect with new and old colleagues. I also invite you to approach me or other board members.

The Family Medicine Summit program covers a broad range of topics relevant to family medicine and primary care. I would like to thank our dedicated planning committee who have developed such a strong program.

Thank you for supporting this important event, and I, together with my fellow board members, look forward to connecting, learning, and celebrating with you during the Summit!

Happy 65th!

Vishal Bhella, MD, CCFP President, Alberta College of Family Physicians.

Welcome to the ACFP’s 2020 Family Medicine Summit

FAMILY MEDICINE SUMMIT MANIFESTOHosted by the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP), the Family Medicine Summit (Summit) is recognized as Alberta’s premier conference for family physicians. The conference offers continuing professional development and an opportunity for family physicians to network with colleagues to share best practices in primary care. Education for Family Docs by Family Docs!

We believe in:

• Developing a highly relevant continuing professional development (CPD) program that is evidence-based, clinically practical, and provides take away lessons that family physicians can immediately incorporate into their practice.

• Having the courage to offer timely, cutting edge content that encompasses emerging, changing, and, at times, challenging learning needs.. The Summit program focusses on the perceived and unperceived learning needs of the ACFP membership and provides valuable solutions.

• Securing engaging, expert presenters to deliver practice-changing education that challenges family physicians to do better.

• Creating an atmosphere of collegiality, trust, and inclusiveness (clinically and socially), where attendees can learn, connect, and relax with each other.

• Delivering an interactive and fun conference that registrants look forward to and feel like they are coming home!

CPD Credits & Linking Learning to Practice (LLP)

Summit participants may elect to use this program as part of a self-study learning activity. The Linking Learning to Practice (LLP) Program of the College of Family Physicians of Canada provides a framework for learners to build on this learning experience. For more information go to:

The ACFP thanks the following Research Revue participants for their support.

Alberta Innovates Alberta Innovates is a key contributor in the pathway to prosperity. We see innovation in its entirety and are involved in every step of the way – from concept to commercialization. This gives us a unique role in Alberta’s innovation ecosystem. We work with the full spectrum of industry – forestry to food, artificial intelligence to ap-plied research, clean energy to carbon capture – allowing us to identify the opportunities, challenges, and gaps that innovation can address.

Pragmatic Trials Collaborative - BedMed StudyThe Pragmatic Trials Collaborative is a group of over 800 practicing primary care providers (including family physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and pharmacists) coming together to improve the care of our own patients and answer pivotal healthcare questions along the way. We are a western Canadian initiative with members in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. We are looking to expand our quality improvement network to other provinces as we grow. Working behind the scenes, we enable practitioners (with little or no impact on practice workflow) to evaluate whether practice changes they are introducing affect important patient-oriented outcomes.

Uncomplicated Low Back Pain Management, University of CalgaryUnderstanding the factors that influence the management of uncomplicated low back pain. We are looking to interview family physicians across Alberta to better understand clinician perspectives on the factors that influence diagnostic imaging ordering for uncomplicated low back pain. Exploring the factors contributing to current practice will help us identify and target key areas for designing optimal interventions to enhance care for patients with uncomplicated low back pain.
