“For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.” — 1 Corinthians 12:13 One of the things I hear that people long for the most today is to be in community. We look for community all around us at the gym, the yoga studio, coffee shops, our neighborhoods and social networks online. Yet, there’s still a yearning for a sense of belonging and authentic community that goes beneath the surface where we are accepted for who we are and can find support for life’s often tricky waters. The original Latin word used for church is “ecclesia,” which literally means “community.” At its heart, the church of Jesus Christ was set up to be a community that models for each other and the world the kingdom of God, as we claim in our baptism: “Christ has opened [the Church] to people of all ages, nations, and races.” That kind of community, where unconditional love, forgiveness and trust in the underlying mystery of God is present, is what is deeply needed and somehow hard to find in this moment of our history. In the backdrop of political unrest, racial discrimination, and harsh words among friends and family, we need not only to believe in God, but allow God to shape us into a community that loves differently, acts differently and walks differently in the world. For this entire 2017-2018 program year, we will carry the overarching theme “Grace and Gratitude,” exploring how these two characteristics can shape our lives together. I will start preaching in September a new sermon series, “My Kind of Community,“ where I will explore how Jesus teaches us to walk with one another, navigate conflict and difference, and embrace others with the love of God. In this newsletter you will find opportunities to be inspired, connected and empowered this fall and I look forward to being in community with you. Grace and Peace, Rev. “For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.” — 1 Corinthians 12:13

One of the things I hear that people long for the most today is to be in community. We look for community all around us at the gym, the yoga studio, coffee shops, our neighborhoods and social networks online. Yet, there’s still a yearning for a sense of belonging and authentic community that goes beneath the surface where we are accepted for who we are and can find support for life’s often tricky waters. The original Latin word used for church is “ecclesia,” which literally means “community.” At its heart, the church of Jesus Christ was set up to be a community that models for each other and the world the kingdom of God, as we claim in our baptism: “Christ has opened [the Church] to people of all ages, nations, and races.”

That kind of community, where unconditional love, forgiveness and trust in the underlying mystery of God is present, is what is deeply needed and somehow hard to find in this moment of our history. In the backdrop of political unrest, racial discrimination, and harsh words among friends and family, we need not only to believe in God, but allow God to shape us into a community that loves differently, acts differently and walks differently in

the world.

Grace and Peace,

Rev. Chris Heckert, Sr. Pastor

CONNECT GROUPSFinding authentic community is an important part of our spiritual journey, not just for shared learning and growth, but for mutual caring and life. This fall, we invite you to participate in a Connect Group to journey with others in fellowship and faith.

Forming a Connect Group is easy. First, pick up the Connect Small Group Guides, available in the HUMC app, on the church website, or in the Welcome Center (new guides are available each week). Then, gather some friends to join you each week for discussion and sharing! Groups can meet at home, in coffee shops, at the church, or wherever you are comfortable. Contact Pastor Christina at [email protected] if you would like to join an existing group, if you start your own group, or would like to reserve a room to meet in at the church.

Our new Connect Group Guides, based on the weekly sermon theme, will be available beginning September 10 through our church app, website, or print versions by request in the church office.

HAVE YOU DOWNLOADED OUR APP?Our new Haddonfield UMC smartphone app makes it easy to live stream worship services, watch weekly sermons at any time, listen to podcasts, give electronically and read daily reflections wherever you are! Be sure to check out these new additions to the app this month by downloading the app in any app store by searching for ‘Haddonfield UMC.’• Improved in-app live stream of the

10:30am service, so you are able to stream directly through the app and experience a better connection
