This month we are delightd to have a chat with multi award winning Hairdresser Sean Taaffe,

Fresh back from the Irish Hairdressing Business Awards, Sean shares some thoughts with us on how it all began.

Sean tell us where your passion for hairdressing came from, was it something you always wanted to do?

I always wanted as far back as I can remember to be a hairdresser, even as a kid going into the hairdressing salon with my mother I loved the environment the buzz and seeing people leave so happy it just made perfect sense to me that’s what I wanted to do, if you think of it it’s not many jobs that you get to be creative, interact with people and have an impact on their lives albeit slight but get to make them look and feel fantastic and raise their self-esteem. So I guess my passion for the industry has always been there for me though it’s more than just a job each time a client walks out they are a walking advert for my work good or bad, that’s why I can never understand anyone putting out anything less than their very best work because at the end of the day if you don’t have pride and passion in your work why bother at all.’

Hairdressers are a little like our doctor when we find one we want to see the same person each time, how do you balance that with the number of salons you have?

You’re right the hairdressers and client relationship are very much like a doctor

dentist etc. when you find a good one you only want them, and that’s a good sign! For me I’m very lucky to have an extremely talented and driven team that share my passion values and vision so whereas I work between our two largest salons Killarney and Tralee there are incredibly artistic stylists in all branches so no worries there. I split my time between the salon floor and education , I typically do 4 days a week working with clients and one full day and two evenings teaching and training with different team members , we have 55 of us across all the salons so keeping standards high is paramount to me,

Trends change over the years are you continuously upgrading your skills and those of your staff?

Yes up skilling in any job is important but in hairdressing it’s crucial, not alone that the clients expect and deserve to know that you are competent in all new trends but for yourself as a hairdresser and as a person you don’t want to stagnate. I’m very lucky I’m part of team Ireland the Irish hairdressing team and as part of that we meet at least once a month to train and we often go abroad to compete. At this level you have to make sure that you are completely aware of everything that is going on within the industry, I’m also one of the few ‘intercoiufure ‘ members in Ireland, this is an invite only organisation that represents the top 1% of hairdressers worldwide and again we train and do seminars for other hairdressers around the country again keeping us sharp!!

What one tip would you give someone with a bad hair day?

It depends very much on the time you have and the problem you’re having , sometimes if you’re having a really bad hair day it’s easier and often Quicker to start from scratch and shampoo and condition the hair rather than trying to control and unruly Mane armed with just a brush .As for one tip this might seem like a strange one ... Even though I believe your haircut is the foundation of your hair the most important thing is exactly that ‘ your hair ‘ if the condition is dry damaged over processed etc. it’s never going to look right no matter who does or what is done to it , my one tip good quality products to make the hair look healthy and you’ve suddenly made a giant leap forward , if I’m allowed a second tip then I’d have to say a good haircut that suits your face shape , hair type and lifestyle .

You have just recently won an array of awards for the salons at the Irish Hairdressing Business Awards, what does this mean to you personally and to the salon and team as a whole?

Yes Sunday 29 March was a great day for us in so far as we won three big awards, firstly Munster salon of the year! Equivalent in football terms to the Munster final!! Secondly ‘ customer care award ‘ which was really important to us , we try and ensure

Sean Taaffe another gold for the kingdom!!

clients receive an experience not just a haircut or colour whatever the case may be. , we want the count to feel listened to , valued appreciated , their wants and needs understood , so to receive the customer care award was great to receive because it was an acknowledgment that we were doing what we strives to do . And finally national salon of the year! The equivalent

of winning the all-Ireland final in football! It wasn’t croke park but the RDS is prestigious enough, it was a very proud moment for myself, for Kara our general manager and all the entire team because it was a victory for the whole group , their hard work their passion their loyalty being recognised on a national level , going up against the biggest and best Salons in the country and winning, for the team they were and are so happy to be a part of it and great for them to k ow that they don’t have to go and work far afield to be part of an amazing salon culture that they are part of it right here in Kerry .For me starting out that was always my dream that the salon or salons could deliver hairdressing standards and salon comfort standards that you would expect on Grafton St or Oxford St and I’m glad to say I think we are doing that .

What does Sean do to relax?

It’s not something I do a lot of , I’m very lucky that my work is very varied from working with clients , to education both internally In the salon or around the country educating for Alfa Parf Milano ( I teach cutting for them nationally), to training with the Irish

team it’s pretty non-stop but never boring , when I do have some spare time I love getting out with the dog for a long walk , I’m mad into motorbikes so love going on day trips , info try and get into the gym a couple of times a week to try and make sure I keep some way in shape !!

Where next for Sean Taaffe? We are always looking at new avenues at how to build and improve our brand; I’m just back from London having toured probably the top ten salons there and have come back with plenty ideas as to how we can strive to be better all the time!!

We often forget that every inch of our body needs protection from the sun – even our lips! Nivea’s Sun Protect lip balm with SPF 30 moisturises and defends those pretty puckers. An SPF of at least 30 is recommended for fair skin but if you’re not used to sun exposure you may want to try a higher factor.

Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub €11.29Whether you shave, wax or tan, a body exfoliator should be your BFF at least twice a week. Not only does exfoliating remove nasty dead skin that otherwise clogs up your pores, it also helps to prevent in-growing hairs and encourage cell renewal. Soap and Glory’s Sugar Crush Body Scrub smells delish and has super cute packaging – what more could a girl ask for!

Summer is coming and it’s more important now than ever to protect your skin against horrible pre-mature aging and skin cancer causing ultra violet rays. Boot’s Soltan Once Face creams with SPF30 are ideal for use under make-up, with one application giving you up to 8 hours protection. Always put sunscreen on after your moisturizer and before your make-up. Worried about that greasy sunscreen feeling? Don’t worry, it also comes in a mattifying formula.

Soltan Once Face Moisturising Suncare Cream SPF 30 €12.31

Garnier Body Summerbody Moisturising Lotion Deep Sun-Kissed Look €3.49Half the time Snow White wouldn’t get a look in here in Ireland. We are definitely the fairest of them all and while this may not bother some of us, a little healthy glow never hurt anyone – right?! Garnier’s Summerbody lotion doesn’t just moisturise your skin, it builds up a natural looking tan too! Streak free and sun-kissed - get ready to rock that summer look.

Waxing 101Ladies (and gentlemen), if you’re looking for an effective way to de-hair your body this summer, the time is now. Drop your shaver, put down the hair removal cream, put your fears aside and pick up the phone. It’s time to start waxing.Look, it’s really not as bad as it’s made out to be and that is coming from the wuss of the century! The benefits totally outweigh the temporary pain, I promise you that. Here’s what you need to know about the waxing world:

• Cold wax is best for the legs and large areas of hair removal. If you want to start small, ask for a half leg wax (ankles to knees). Remember, beauty therapists are trained to get the job done effectively and as fast as possible so try to relax.• Hot wax is best for small and sensitive areas of hair removal. This includes the bikini area, underarms and face. It is way better for your skin to use hot wax in these areas as pre-wax oil is used before the wax is applied, protecting the skin and reducing pulling and dragging (and pre-mature fine lines and wrinkles).• Tapering of the hair occurs after waxing which means that the appearance of the hair is much less noticeable than if you shave. It is also softer.• Regrowth of waxed hair is finer than shaved hair. As time goes on, hair growth becomes sparser.• Hair growth cycles are not necessarily in sync, so if you start waxing you can expect to see new areas of hair growth in a short space of time after treatment. This usually only happens after the first couple of treatments until hair growth cycles synchronise. • 4-6 weeks is the average amount of time between treatments. That’s 4-6 weeks of no shaving, no hair removal creams and no time wasted!• Pain lessens with every treatment you get. If you have to, take a couple of paracetamol half an hour before your treatment. • Erythema (red spots on the legs) and bloodspots are very common, especially with first time waxers so don’t freak out!• Avoid saunas, steam rooms, perfumed products and sunbeds for 48 hours after your treatment and exfoliate after 3 days to help stop in-growing hairs.

If you want to have your body summer ready for 2015 then start waxing now so your hair growth cycles are more or less one and the same. And whatever you do, DO NOT shave between treatments – the pain will be as bad as the first time, every time!

When it’s sunny and hot outside, foundation can be your worst enemy, especially if you’re prone to sweating a lot. Why not give your skin a break and let it breathe? Colour correcting creams or CC creams, help to even out skin pigmentation whilst giving light coverage and allowing skin to breathe, healing blemishes. There’s no need to cake yourself this summer – spend more time out in the fresh air and reap the natural beauty benefits.

Olay Total Effects Pore Minimizer CC Cream €19.99

Nivea Lip Care Sun Protect SPF 30 €4.69

The Build a Bank programme links directly to the Business Studies Curriculum and is an excellent, practical preparation for learning about running a business. Participating students will be involved in all aspects of banking such as sourcing new customers for their bank, encouraging regular savings, providing ongoing customer service and keeping accurate financial records – in fact everything it takes to run a bank!

Presentation Secondary School Tralee was part of this and got to the national finals being the only school in Kerry to go through. The operating team behind this venture are Katie Ahern (Bank Manager), Lauren Kelly (Assistant Manager), Ciara Dennehy (Financial Controller), Laura O’Connell (Marketing Expectative), Sarah Kilgallen (Customer Representative) and Aisha Lawel (Customer Representative). Connect had a chat with the girls to find out a bit more about their bank

We decided to call ourselves The Dream Bank because we help our customers shoot for the stars and reach their dream. Whether that dream is the new iPhone 6 or an outfit we will help them all the way. We set up and run a bank in our school. We competed in the Regional’s Competition in the Silver Springs Hotel in Cork in February. We were one of 4 schools out of 34 to get through to the Nationals competition in the RDS in Dublin on the 16th of April. We were the only Kerry school to get through in the competition and we feel extremely honoured to not only be representing our school but also our county in this extremely prestigious competition. Because we are an all-girls school and hence an all-girls bank we are extremely passionate about women as leaders in industry. For our launch we got Orlagh Winters a very successful and inspirational business woman. We were inspired and empowered when Patricia Arguette embodied our dreams in her Oscar’s speech when she said “It’s our time for equal rights for women...” since

then we have had a number of business women in Kerry come and chat to us and give us some valuable information to help us on our journey. Of course our teachers Ms O Grady and Ms O Connor have been tremendous support and a tower of patience; we have also had the encouragement and leadership of the Bank Mentor Sarah Leahy, who has been on hand to support our operations,

What makes your bank different to the ordinary high street bank for students?

We believe that the way in which we market our bank, is one of the many reasons that make us stand out from the crowd. We change our theme every week, ranging from Mental Health to Carnival Week. We have also come up with a clever marketing strategy to promote our bank, not only in Ireland but all around the world with our Spotted Map.

What is the aim and purpose of the bank?

The aim of the dream bank was to educate others in our school and wider community on banking. We went to our local primary schools to introduce the future me programme. We held a teacher training day where we explained to them how to operate and benefit from internet banking. We organised a 6th year day, where we gave the future college students information packs and advice on college funds and saving. We assisted in the creation of the new banking module with 1st years and also held saving master classes.

Has the bank been an operating success to date?

We have been extremely successful so far with over 204 new accounts opened; 193 new internet banking accounts; 136 new student savers accounts; 224 My Cloud Cards issued, and over €25,000 lodged.

So the finals happened and you won the competition outright what kind of feeling was that?

It was the most incredible feeling, the tension amongst all the students was just nerve wracking but sitting waiting for the final name to be called out, I think we were just ecstatic when it was us and yes there was for a tiny second a little disbelieve on our part but we bounced on the stage to collect our trophy.

We won a trophy and a cheque for the school and we each got a one for all gift voucher for 500 so it was worth every minute of it.

CONNECT Style THIS MONTH, ANNBURYS IS CELEBRATING 16 YEARS IN BUSINESS AND I’VE BEEN REFLECTING ON ALL THE DIFFERENT TRENDS THAT HAVE COME AND GONE OVER THOSE 16 YEARS. AS IT IS SUCH A BIG TREND THIS SEASON THIS MONTH I WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE CURRENT 70S REVIVAL NOW, SOME OF YOU MAY BE THINKING TANK TOPS, POINTY COLLARS AND PUDDING BOWL HAIRCUTS ARE BEST LEFT IN THE PAST, BUT LIKE ALL TRENDS THERE ARE ELEMENTS THAT SUIT EVERYBODY AND MORE SUBTLE INFLUENCES IN EVERYTHING FROM JEANS TO BAGS.

One of the biggest 70’s trends has to be flares and especially flared jeans. If the full flare isn’t for you then why not opt for the flattering boot cut. These jeans are beginning to come under the fashion radar and are a simple way to elongate the shorter leg. Annburys currently stock a fantastic American range called ‘Not your daughters jeans’. These have a high rise waistband that flattens the tummy and while comfortable also give a great silhouette.

Team your jeans with a pretty 70’s inspired blouse, either in a paisley or colourful print Boot cut jeans work equally well with a blazer, fitted or cropped jacket, add a pair of wedges or platforms and you have a sophiscated dressy-casual outfit.

The 70’s style has been given a more edgy yet wearable feel by the simple use of modern

cuts and fabrics, making it more accessible to all ages, shapes and sizes. Bye bye nylon and hello cotton! The simple cotton cami, in a variety of colours has replaced the nylon vest top and is a staple in any woman’s summer wardrobe. Great for layering under blouses for that cool summer chic look.

Well as a 70’s child myself I’m feeling a bit nostalgic and remembering two ice lollies, the little angel and the little devil, I’ll let ye decide which was my favourite! That’s all for now,Happy shopping,

I am sometimes asked for tips on buying accessories for special occasions, here are a few things I have learned over the years which I can share with you, and this is of course just a personnel opinion. I think most importantly if you have already bought the outfit, bring it or part of it with you. You have a much better chance of making sure that the colours tone it with the outfit. If you are unsure or nervous about your own personal choice, bring along someone with you whose opinion you can trust. It may be the first time wearing the new shoes that match the outfit; it is a good idea to have a comfortable back up pair in the car for later on during the dancing etc. If you are reading from the alter make sure you have a shawl with you to cover your shoulders in case the dress does not cover them and make sure you have a pin or clip to secure it. You would not want to be upsetting the priest now would you?

At the afters some people like to step out of the reception for a little break, it is often quite cold outside of the hotel, make sure you have a shawl in your bag to cover you and prevent getting chilled.Hope this is helpfulTill next time

Last weekend Ballybunion became the Mecca for writers, journalists and politicians.

Who would have believed back in 2013 when Kilcooly`s Country House Hotel hosted the inaugural Women in Media conference that this event could not only get bigger but that it could get even better.

The “Mary Cummins award for women of outstanding achievement in media” is now firmly fixed as not to be missed in the annual calendar of media events. Last year`s recipient, Geraldine Kennedy was on hand to present the award to the 2015 winner, Olivia O`Leary. Both women worked together at the Irish Times and the mutual respect was evident to all when each spoke at the Gala Dinner on Saturday night, April 18th. We as a society have come through some dark times and owe a huge debt to brave women like these who stood up for what they believed in. The inaugural winner, Miriam O Callaghan was not just on hand for the passing on of the baton, but was amongst the panel of some of the most influential women in broadcasting in Ireland. Fellow panellists were Moya Doherty, Dearbhail McDonald and Dee Forbes. Geraldine Kennedy initiated a lively debate with her acceptance speech in 2014 and Chair, Katie Hannon, posed the question, if it is harder for women to succeed in the media and if gender made a difference to the panelists careers.Legal editor at the Irish Independent Dearbhail McDonald spoke with passion about the fact that the problems that women face in the media industry is just a facet of what women face in life in general. She pointed out that media is a difficult game for both genders and that hard work, flexibility and availability are key elements for any success.President & M.D of Discovery Networks northern Europe Dee Forbes agreed with Dearbhail on the importance of a strong work ethic but emphasized that women should be helping women more. Dee explained that she felt that women were often not confident enough, even when they had a higher level of competence compared to their male counterparts, and how that needs to change.RTE’s Prime Time Miriam O’Callaghan talked about her personal experiences and how important it is to remember what the media can do to change lives, so picking stories and subjects that are important is vital. Miriam was very clear on not dwelling on past mishaps or failures but to remember to keep going, pick yourself up and keep at it.

RTE Chairperson Moya Doherty (Co-Founder of Riverdance) was adamant about how women treat language and the importance of not using words like ‘girls’ or ‘ladies’, not to belittle ourselves. She spoke with passion about finding what suits you and to not fall into the trap of behaving like men, but to be strong, competent and confident women, echoing Dee Forbes words. After this explosive symposium a lot more was in store. Natasha Fennel and Irish Times Journalist Roisin Ingle introduced their recently published book The Daugherhood, a book about the unique relationships that women have with their mothers, be they good or bad. The next point on the program was an interesting political forum asking the question: Working in the Media and Politics – are women treated differently? Chaired by the head of journalism from the University in Limerick, Mary Dundon. Mary introduced an impressive panel: former Tanaiste Mary Harney, Journalist and Broadcaster Olivia O’Leary, former Tanaiste Dick Spring and journalist and academic Dr. Tom Cloonan. They all agreed that women are seen differently, the comments on how they look, what they wear and who they date often seems to overshadow their work. And the statistics that Tom presented from his research were staggering and surprised everyone. It seems that young female journalists suffer a high level of abuse (both verbal and physical) from both their employers and the people they

report about, in politics in particular. With so much food for thought it was only fitting that the last point of the day was a five course Gala Dinner filled with lots of engaging conversation. The delicious meal was followed by the presentation of the Mary Cummins Award for Women of Outstanding Achievement in the Media to Olivia O’Leary. Both Olivia and Geraldine shared some of their life experiences with the other guests. But the weekend still wasn’t over! After a great night in the pub, a hearty breakfast and some time on the beach the conference was rounded off by an Online Media Symposium. The panelists, Breaking news Editor of the Irish Times, David Labanyi, Reported.ly journalist Malachy Browne, Managing Director of Drury/Porter Novelli Anne Marie Curran, Image and Licensing Officer of the National Gallery of Ireland Marie Mc Feely and Cyber Psychologist Patrick Kennedy all spoke about how the future is mobile. It was clear that they all believed that while the traditions of journalism remain the same (verifying sources and stories, writing good content, informing and educating readers) the way this is done is changing faster than many think. It was obvious by the statistics that most readers chose to access their news in a manifold way, but that the main area of growth is in mobiles. This also influences how, when and what the reader chooses to read, changing the way we should approach news production Feedback from both contributors and the audiences has been phenomenal. There are two burning questions, who will receive the award in 2016 and can the bar be raised even higher?

Doctors and nurses have a habit of telling people what to do.. and leaving them to their own devices to do it. “You need to give up cigarettes, they are bad for you”! “You need to get your weight down” But not everyone can work out how to get started on such a chal-lenge. After meeting with Marianne and Orlaith from Smart Psychology I now realise that many of my patients need more than medical advice to make lifestyle changes

Have you ever said to yourself I am going to lose weight? I am going to stop smoking? Or go to the gym three times a week? We are all guilty of making empty promises to ourselves.

The Transtheoretical Model of Be-havioural Change (Prochaska and DiCle-mente, 1983) or The Wheel of Change is a framework to consider when you are planning to make healthy lifestyle deci-sions such as giving up smoking, eating healthier foods or exercising.

The Wheel of Change is divided into different sections.

Precontemplation is when you have no intention of changing. Other people may think that you should change but you are not contemplating or even considering changing at this moment in time.

Contemplation is when you are thinking of changing. You may be hesitant at this stage as you weigh up your options. It is a good start but this does not mean you are going to change.

Planning is when you are doing more than just thinking about it, you are preparing for change by putting plans in place for example signing up to a gym,

buying healthy food in the supermar-ket or throwing out the last packet of cigarettes.

Action is when you start putting your new healthy lifestyle behaviour into practice. You are no longer smoking or eating unhealthy food and you are exer-cising regularly.

Maintenance is when you are doing your new healthy lifestyle behaviour for a minimum of 6 months. You are becom-ing more confident in your new lifestyle change and you are reaping the benefits for example feeling and looking health-ier.

Change can be difficult so the ingredients to succeed needs to consist of a realistic plan which also identifies temptation and obstacles. Unfortunately as human beings we are all susceptible to relaps-ing or returning to our old behaviours of smoking, eating unhealthy food, or no longer exercising. Unfortunately people can become disheartened and give up on their new lifestyle choices. Rather than giving up just go back to the plan and see what triggered your relapse. Was there a certain person, place or situation that lead you to return to old ways? Or did you experience negative thoughts or unpleasant feelings that triggered the relapse? If you can figure this out you will be more prepared the next time increasing your chances of succeeding in your lifestyle change. Do not give up on your goal(s) as having a healthy lifestyle is important for your physical and mental wellbeing. If you are struggling seek support.

Do you struggle to maintain positive lifestyle changes which impacts on your

health? Smart Psychology plan to run a weekend workshop in September to facilitate you in making positive healthy changes. If you are interested in attend-ing this workshop please email [email protected]

The Summer Season is upon us again. We all welcome the longer evenings and the warmer days. People always want to look their best in their summer attire. They often forget however about their smile-line and if their gums are healthy. An attractive smile needs healthy gums.

What signs should people be aware of when checking their gum health?

Everyone should check for bleeding gums when they clean their teeth. The best way to do this is to floss the teeth with dental floss at least once a day. If you are unsure how to do this, you need only ask your dentist. Brushing alone is not a sufficient way of testing for bleeding gums. Some people complain of bleeding gums while chewing food. This can cause embarrassment for them, especially at social occasions.

Bleeding and/or swollen gums are often caused by inflammation in the gums, due to bacterial infection. Bacteria are found in dental plaque, which is a thin sticky film which builds up on teeth and eventually can harden. It is then called tartar/calculus. If this is left untreated, it can cause gums to shrink or recede. Once gums shrink, they never grow back to their original level. Prevention is therefore the best cure.

If you find it difficult to see plaque on your teeth, you can use plaque disclosing tablets. These tablets contain a dye and are chewed for about 20 seconds. You then need to spit out the debris. The tablet will leave a dye on the plaque in your mouth, thus making it easier to identify and helps greatly in removing the plaque effectively. It is a great way of testing yourself to see if you have cleaned your teeth correctly. These tablets are available in many chemists and dental practices.

Bleeding and swollen gums (gingivitis) can be indicative of gum disease. Regular scaling of teeth in your dental practice, to remove plaque and tartar, will normally stop the gum disease. You will need to clean the teeth correctly on a daily basis at home. If gingivitis continues without treatment, it can lead to moderate or advanced gum disease (periodontitis). This is more serious ,as not only do the gums recede, but the underlying bone foundation also shrinks back. This can lead to loose teeth, making them at risk of infection and abscess formation. This can be very painful and often ends with the loss of the tooth.

This all brings us back to effective cleaning on a daily basis. Some people are more prone to gum disease by their genetic make-up. They need extra vigilance to maintain good gum health. A treatment plan will be made by your dentist on the best way to treat gum disease. If surgical intervention is needed or if the gum disease cannot be controlled, your dentist will refer you to a periodontist (gum specialist) for evaluation and treatment.

We are lucky nowadays to have these specialists. Remember, healthy gums means a healthy smile. Beir bua.

Its summer time and with it comes School tours for the kids before holidays, it’s always the time of year they look forward to as the school tour is planned. When that’s over they start looking forward to the holidays and what camps they can participate in, or maybe parents are thinking about where to take a nice family staycation within the county, or indeed just a day trip to keep everyone in the house a drift of the dreadful cabin fever that can set in over the long holidays.. Well here in Kerry we have no excuse, we are spoilt for choice, whether you are looking for the strenuous rugged mountain walk, or prefer to dip your toes in the water there is lots to do. We went out and about to get a taste for what the kids and the whole family can look forward to this summer.

SCHOOL TOURS are spoilt for choice in Tralee they can visit the Aqua dome, Blennerville windmill which has the amazing model railway, or the Museum in Denny street, Tralee Bay Wetlands and of course for the real smallies and trip to the town park for a teddy bears picnic is always a great day out. Moving on to Killarney again we are not short of somewhere to go, from the fabulous Muckross House and traditional farms, to Nature trails and of course the beautiful lake trips around Killarney. Not forgetting the lovely Kennedys pet farm on route. Dingle of course has the fab Ocean world so get to know the penguins and all about the sea creatures, or pop cross the county to Crag Cave always a great day for the family or school trip alike.

SUMMER CAMPS So holidays are out and the kids need something to occupy them... summer camps are a great way to pass the summer and are a great way of keeping them active and away from the XBOX and other indoor activities that now seem to take over everything... swimming camps are great fun for the kids while learning the basics of swimming for those starting out to the more experienced little floaters amongst us. Banna Beach Hotel and Leisure Centre have an excellent summer camp, for kids of all ages, where they learn the basic swimming rules and the confidence to be in the water, while also doing other activities through the day. They always make lots of friends and look forward to going back again.Another great idea this year in Kerry are the Irish Camps where kids can do a three week residency course to ensure fluency in the language at the end of it. Of course summer wouldn’t be summer without the football and soccer camps always a must for little future Rooney’s, Wellbecs or indeed the Paul Galvin, and Daragh O

Shea in the Gaelic side of things. These are always a great source of entertainment and with such an array of clubs both GAA and Soccer around the county there is one near you.ALTERNATIVES I hear you say my child is too small for camps what can I do? take a trip to some of the outdoor activities as mentioned above, lots of those are suitable for kids of all age groups, they would also love a trip to the Playdium in Tralee, Crazy Cave Castleisland and Buddies Killarney are just a few excellent establishments that are guaranteed to keep your little ones entertained in a safe worry free environment while mum can relax with a nice cup of coffee. So hopefully we have given you some thoughts and ideas on what to do this summer, we will bring you all the latest updates on further camps and activities for kids as we get them. Have a fun filled summer and remember stay safe.

WILD GARLIC PESTOWITH MARK DOE

Take a stroll through the national park this time of year and it is impossible not to smell the beautiful sent of wild garlic. Growing amongst bluebells wild garlic is easily identified and a great way to get into the craze of foraging your own food. There are a few varieties of wild garlic growing in Ireland but wild garlic ransoms are the most common. The leaves are edible and they can be used as salad, cooked as a vegetable, in soup, or as an ingredient for pesto instead of basil. It can also be used to flavour bread and soda bread. Sometimes I make an oil from the leaves and then use the oil to make a mayonnaise. I also love to make a version of champ potato using the chopped leaves to replace the spring onions. One of my favourite uses for wild garlic pesto is to serve it with steamed baby potatoes. A spoon stirred through potato salad brings the salad to another level.

CONNECT BUSINESS recently supported an event with the Kerry Business Women’s Network and our prize on the night was a business profile

for one lucky lady, so we are delighted to introduce you to that lady. Alison Walsh has been creating jewellery for a number of years now and has some wonderful pieces here is her story

How did the jewellery business begin for you? While training as a Window Dresser in London I visited the markets in Portobello Road and the bead shops around Covent Garden in my spare time. I collected beads from these places and made jewellery with them. I also worked in Liberty’s department store and got lots of inspiration from the great Jewellery Hall there. My friends would

ask me to make jewellery for them when they saw what I was wearing. When I returned to Dublin I worked as a window dresser for Wallis and then came back to Tralee and worked with my Mum in Ryle and Nolan on the Mall. When the shop closed I started designing and making jewellery again and the business really took off from there.

Do you get inspiration from anything in particular for your designs?

I get inspiration from lots of places. Watching films, reading fashion magazines and websites, often the beads themselves will inspire a piece. For bespoke pieces a client will come to me with an outfit they want to match and

the colours and style of the dress will determine the jewellery that is made then.

Where can people access your collection are you available online? My jewellery is available in my online shop www.etsy.com/shop/alisonwalshjewellery. I have a home studio that people can visit to browse or have something made especially for them .I have some display cabinets with pieces in local hotels and through Original Kerry’s pop up shops during the year in Listowel Writers week and in Tralee at Christmas. I also design for some independent retailers in Munster.

4. Where to from here for Alison Walsh Jewellery? This year I have been accepted to take part in the National Crafts and Design fair in the RDS in Dublin at Christmas so I am very busy already preparing for this. I am involved in a few projects and pop up shops with Original Kerry and would like to expand and wholesale to more independent retailers.

TILL NEXT MONTH

With the recent spell of great weather in April, every man in the county seemed to have their legs out. Shorts will hopefully be a staple of our wardrobes in the coming months so I think it a good idea to look at how they are best worn. Firstly sports shorts need to be kept to the sports pitch or the privacy of your own garden. Nobody needs to show off that much leg. A good rule of thumb is keep shorts length to around the knee, just above seems to be the trend for 2015. This will

keep legs looking in proportion and are suitable for all summer occasions. Men with heavier set legs can create balance by using darker colours and bolder patterns. Men with slighter legs should use lighter colours like white or cream to create balance with the upper body, again smaller finer prints can help create proportion. Try and avoid shorts that are baggy they just dont look flattering. Those of us who carry weight around our stomach area can use bright and bold colours like red or orange to draw attention to our legs thus giving us the look of being more streamlined. Remember always wear sunscreen and dont forget the ears and the top of your feet.

Legal

Compliance

Employee management is a complex area of any business. Today employers must be aware of their legal obligations whilst managing their people in an effective and efficient manner. Employee motivation is key to individual performance, group productivity and employee morale. Management must know how best to motivate staff so that they work willingly and effectively. As well as this it is important to keep in mind that every behaviour has an underlying cause - understanding the cause of behaviour and implementing motivating factors is key to changing or improving outcomes. A positive motivation philosophy and practice will improve productivity, quality of work and service to clients. Motivation helps staff achieve their goals, gain a positive perspective, build self-esteem and capability and manage their own development within the business. Impactful managers must also openly communicate with their workforce, for example during times of economic challenges it is important that management outline the actions they plan to take to help the company adjust to any changes.

To manage your team effectively a framework must be put in place so it’s important to have policies and procedures in place, some of which you are legally obliged to have others which will be relevant to your business to ensure a high standard of conduct, performance and service are maintained. It is also important to keep in mind that these policies should be reviewed regularly and changed accordingly to incorporate any new developments. Employers are legally obliged to have a Discipline and Grievance policy in place for employees. This is to ensure that all matters are dealt with in line with Irish legislation, fairly and consistently. The benefits are to enable a fair and quick resolution of any employee problem or grievance

At the HR Suite we provide guidance on People Management and hold regular training days for Employers and Managers. PEOPLE MANAGEMENTTripadvisor – With 3 Kerry Towns now featured in the Top 10 locations in Ireland, more and more service & accommodation businesses locally will properly engage with Tripadvisor.

Customer Care – Almost 42% of Social media users expect a response from Businesses within 60minutes. Only those businesses that fully interact with their customers will benefit from Social Media

Personal Page Shut-Down – Facebook has stepped up its campaign of removing personal pages used for Business purposes, and predict over 90% of these pages will have been eliminated by year end.

Facebook Video – Facebook are serious about taking on Youtube, I predict we will see more businesses incorporating video into their marketing mix. It is unlikely Facebook will totally overtake YouTube when it comes to video sharing, they will certainly give them a run for their money.

Twitter – Kerry is finally embracing Twitter, it’s becoming more relevant to customers. Crucially 96% of Irish Journalists and Bloggers are using Twitter on a daily basis, which is an essential target for businesses to spread the word.

Paid Advertising & Content Creation – Focused Business Owners will drown-out the message from their competitors. As organic reach decreases businesses will have no choice but to pay for their advertising on Facebook and Twitter, and will create relevant content plans to engage customers.

More Platforms, More Time – Businesses will have to spread their focus on Social Media to include ‘newer’ platforms due to the phenomenal growth of Snapchat, Instagram and Pinterest.

Tweet and Be Mobile – Google’s announcement to prioritise Mobile Friendly websites, will see older websites plummet. They have also partnered with Twitter in recent weeks to enable Tweets to now appear in their search engines.

Integrated Campaigns – Publications like Connect Kerry are embracing Social Media, which means marketing campaigns for small businesses will have to think about how their message appears in both traditional print and online.

So Geraldine, welcome to Kerry, tell us a little bit about yourself?

Well I hail from Leitrim, I am a graduate of Galway RTC – having studied Hotel Management. Then I travelled to various cities to further develop my career. I started in the 5* London Hilton on Park Lane (Hyde Park Corner), then moved to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates spending five years at the 5 * Abu Dhabi Hilton as Food and Beverage Manager. Then I spent a year in St Petersburg at the 5 * Grand Hotel Europe. I returned to Ireland in 1999 and took up the position as deputy general manager at Jurys Hotel & Towers and in 2003 I became general manager of the 5 * Berkeley Court Hotel. I was also general manager of The Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire and Jurys Inn for a period of time and worked in the UK for Devere Hotels & Venues and most recently worked as general manager at The Glasshouse, Sligo.I love the outdoors and am looking forward to exploring the wonderful Kerry countryside and rekindling my passion for hillwalking.

The Aghadoe Heights is a well-established property in Kerry are you looking forward to the challenge of running this splendid hotel?

I feel blessed and privileged to be part of such an iconic hotel with the great history and services it is famous for. A huge amount of thought has gone into creating the famous AH style and ethos so I am excited by the prospect of leading the hotel and team with such a fine reputation both nationally and internationally. I aim to build on and continue the outstanding passion and enthusiasm with the team at Aghadoe. Kerry, and Killarney in particular are such wonderful places that on a personal basis I am thrilled to be part of the Killarney Community and I hope with the AH brilliant reputation I continue to assist in this wonderful partnership. AH is such a niche property and no expense has been spared in making it what it is and I am really forward to develop this further.

What new things do you see yourself bringing to the Aghadoe?

AH is and has always been a very successful 5* hotel & Spa and besides the wonderful views and fine building and the services provided (from the hot choc for the children on arrival, mineral water on departure for the car journey (thoughtfulness), exquisite spa treatments, the tennis court and swimming pool, the provision of bikes to enjoy the country side, the advice from all member of the team on the vast array of local activities, the creative food and beautiful food, traditional afternoon tea, bedroom with view and balconies etc.) - the AH team is the life & soul of the hotel and I want to continue and support (the team) that warm welcome they extend and genuine help they provide. They are passionate and the hotel is famous for the mantra – (you arrive as guests and leave as friends). Guests’ are treated here as family coming home from abroad and are pampered and spoilt. The hotel is a destination and the guests’ can truly relax and forget the outside world so it is not so much bringing new things to AH but in ensuring the hotel remains as the warm and relaxing haven it has always been. Our guests’ expectation have always been very discerning and we will continue to exceed these expectations’.

“I want the hotel to be recognised locally, nationally and internationally as one of the finest five-star hotels in Ireland.

Can you give us any little hints as to what to expect from the Aghadoe in the coming months?

We are working on a capital investment plan to maintain the 5* standard AH is famous for and this includes a proposal for a new contemporary bedroom with classic touches and guest comfort being the main objective. Soft furnishings will also get a face lift and we will refresh certain areas. The hotel is such a tranquil and luxurious place – we are careful not to change too much but instead enhance what is there already. This is what our long term guests’ have told us and it is our absolute intention to deliver on our promises and provide the service and most importantly the experience of the destination The Spa will continue to offer new treatments that will re invigorate body and soul. We get such wonderful feedback about the Spa and its facilities the world class therapists will continue to perform bespoke rituals that suit each individual.

The dining experience at AH is widely known to be one of the best in Ireland and our team of chefs’ create lavish banquets to intimate dinners with the locally sourced ingredients from the lakes and farms locally

The hotel will also go from strength to strength with continued investment in the AH Team that make the hotel & spa so special. There is such a wealth of experience in the team – up to 500 years of experience with our longest serving member of the team here for the past 43 years. The team are so committed I want to ensure this remains the same and the team are the best of the best.

Are You Due an Income Tax Refund? Income Tax refunds are often repayable to employees even where they are not required to do a tax return. This can be the result of unused income tax allowances, medical expenses, college fees, redundancy, layoffs, changing jobs, amongst others. It should be noted that entitlements to allowances or tax credits will only result in a refund where tax has been overpaid.

We had our first child last year and my wife was off work for over 6 Months?Although maternity benefit is taxable, your wife may have had tax allowances, which were not fully claimed. In addition, any unreimbursed medical costs could also result in a tax refund.

I am an elderly man and incurred nursing home expenses, while recovering from an operation…The nursing home expenses are tax deductible and relief is granted at your marginal tax rate, which could be as high as 41%. In addition any unreimbursed medical expenses can be claimed.

I have two Children in college and paid substantial fees, am I due any relief?Where Tuition Fees are incurred you are entitled to tax relief. Relief is due at 20% on the excess over €3,000 subject to a maximum of €7,000 in respect of full time courses.

I have been contributing to a Private Pension, am I due any relief?Quite often pensions are deducted by your employer and relief is given at source. You are normally entitled to claim pension contributions as a tax deduction at your marginal tax rate where they are not being deducted by your employer.

I was on temporary layoff at the end of last year…An employee’s tax allowances and credits are averaged over the year. This should result in a tax refund, as you may not have claimed your full allowances.

The famous speed film franchise The Fast and The Furious has just had its 7th

release. However in Kerry rallying circles we have a number of new young and fast drivers and co-drivers but none are furious – at least not unless things are not going right on a rally! Picking who to profile was not easy as alongside the ‘more experienced’ competitors like Paul Nagle we have the new stars like Noel O’Sullivan Junior taking part in the ERC and Mikie Galvin also doing very well. However two that have impressed in the last few years are Rob Duggan and Ger Conway and they are just back after a great performance in the Circuit of Ireland and are gearing up for the Rally of the Lakes. More importantly they are leading the Northern Ireland Junior Championship.

What’s even more impressive is that they are in left hand drive Fiesta R2. I asked the duo why they wend left handed.“We are looking ahead at hopefully competing in Europe and wanted to have plenty of experience in a left hand drive car. We are also hoping for a Billy Coleman Award for Rob and we felt this was the way to go. We got the car in Holland and are delighted with the way it has run so far.” “We are in for a busy few weeks. We will recce for the Rally of the Lakes and then hopefully have a successful two days over the May Bank Holiday weekend. After that we head back to the North for the next round – the Tour de Sporrens.” The duo have certainly been catching the eye and are on the right road to become the next rally crew to head from Kerry to Europe.

Like anyone two sports persons who operate as a team, especially one that goes at over 150km per hour, Rob Duggan (RD) and Ger Conway (GC) can almost answer each other’s sentences!!

So this is a combined effort!

What is your earliest sporting moment?

“It would be watching the Circuit of Ireland rally, when it came to Killarney at Easter, and also the Rally of the Lakes. It was great to head out early to stages like the Gap”.

Best Moment in Your Sport?

GC: “Mine would be winning last year’s Killarney Historic’s Rally alongside Denis Moynihan. It’s a rally I grew up watching and to win it was great”. RD: I would have to say this year’s Circuit of Ireland where we took 5th overall. Also not far behind was last year’s Rally of the Lakes where I was really on the pace”.

Favourite moment outside

your own sport?

“Growing up here it would have to be following Kerry to All Ireland glory. It’s great for kids and when they won there was a huge buzz for the homecoming and of course Sam coming to the schools”.What in life gets you excited?“The speed and buzz of rallying. There is nothing better than going flat out in a car that is purring. There is also the thrill of going faster than your fellow competitors.”

What in life annoys you?

Negative people who have a ‘can’t do attitude’ and are always negative. In sporting circles this can be disastrous and we try and surround ourselves with positive people. Also those with bad attitudes annoy us”.

Noise or sound that excites you?

Obvious really but the sound of an engine running sweetly!!

Noise or sound that annoys you?

Following on from the above question then this is the opposite!! The sound of an engine blowing up is something every rally competitor hates to hear. Also the sound of breaking glass or the twisting of metal usually means something is not right!

4 persons –dead or alive that you would invite to your dinner party?

Colin McRae – he was a legend and we would love to quiz him on his experiences. Paul Nagle, who inspired both of us to get involved and to try and move onto the top level. Frank Meagher as he was a driver who we followed when we first got into rallying. The other person would be Bertie Fisher so we could get some tips as to how to go faster up the Gap!!

THIS MONTH SUZANNE KEANE TRAVELLED TO GALWAY FOR THE LAUNCH OF PEUGEOT’S NEW 508…

Following on from the successful launch of the 308 Peugeot are hoping the new and improved 508 will take a large chunk of market share within the D segment. Available in both saloon and SW format the 2015 Peugeot 508 has a much more upmarket look with a distinctive front end, their signature “lion claw” taillights and a range of features as standard which include LED daytime running lights, a 7” touchscreen, Bluetooth with Audio Streaming, Air Conditioning and Cruise Control.

The 508 is very well equipped in comparison to its rivals and there are 3 trim levels to consider - even the most basic model comes with alloy wheels and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The high level of standard specification

is what’s expected to be the big selling point for the 508. On narrow bumpy roads it is extremely smooth and steady - even on the deepest potholes - and around town it doesn’t feel too large to manoeuvre. Once you hit the open road torque delivery is evenly distributed and it never feels underpowered. The 508 may not be the most exciting car to drive but if comfort is your priority it is an ideal match. Engine options include 1.6L 115bhp and 2.0L 140bhp (also 163bhp) diesels with both 6 speed manual and automatic gearboxes. A GT version will also be available to order and all models come with a 5 year extended warranty.

The 508 starts at €26,750 or from €270/month on a PCP deal. For more information visit www.peugeot.ie
