PAGE 2 2020 ACADEMIC RESULTS

It is my privilege to share with you the outstanding academic results of the graduating Class of 2020. As a community of educators, parents and students we are immensely proud of the tenacity and achievements of these young women.

Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College is a comprehensive school that offers senior students the choice of studying either the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB Diploma). In 2020, 123 students received their HSC and 66 candidates successfully completed the requirements for the award of the IB Diploma.

Through their efforts, the Class of 2020 have impressively contributed to the reputation of Monte as a place of academic excellence and accomplishment. Students have achieved exemplary results in both the HSC and the IB Diploma. These results are recognised in the HSC with 18 students achieving ATARs of 95+ and with four State Placements. In the IB Diploma, two candidates received a perfect score of 45 resulting in the highest possible ATAR of 99.95 and 35% of the IB Diploma cohort achieved an ATAR of 98+. It is a good news story that students in both the HSC and IB Diploma have achieved ATARS over 99.

In 2020, the College has performed strongly in the HSC ranking of schools by placing 53rd, well within the top 100. This measure, however, does not take into account the academic success of students in the IB Diploma who comprised just over a third of the full cohort.

All students at Monte in Years 7 to 10 are IB students as they undertake the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). As a teaching and learning framework, the MYP enables our young women to benefit from inquiry based, student centred strategies through which they learn how to learn. Additionally, the IB Learner Profile offers our learning community focus and we continue to improve at developing students’ critical capabilities as they complete all requirements of the NSW Record of School Achievement.

Every young woman graduating from the College can finish her secondary education with a deep sense of pride and purpose. Exceptional academic results have been achieved by students working towards each qualification amidst a worldwide backdrop of uncertainty and difficulty. Whilst diligence is said to be the mother of good fortune, collective commitment to respond sensibly and sensitively to disruption has made all the difference in 2020. To thrive academically, personally and spiritually, Year 12 students have engaged a mindset that has been trusting of both their own capacity and the care of people close to them, whilst maintaining faith in the value of their goals and aspirations.

The graduating Class of 2020 have demonstrated their enormous capacity to succeed and as they embark on future endeavours, they leave with full admiration and our best wishes.

NSW HSC IB DIPLOMA

Differentiation between Years 11 and 12

HSC Year begins in Term 4 of Year 11 and is assessable only during the HSC Year. Final examinations are based on work covered in HSC Year.

The IB Diploma is a two-year programme with final examinations being based on work covered over two years.

Number of Subjects Studied

Year 12 HSC Course requires a minimum of four subjects, representing a minimum of 10 units, though many students undertake 11 or 12 units.

Six academic subjects studied over two years as well as Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE).

Compulsory Subjects

English is compulsory. Monte students are also required to undertake at least 1 unit of Studies of Religion.

One subject is mandated from each of the following groups: 1. Language A (English) 2. Language Acquisition 3. Individuals in Society 4. Experimental Sciences 5. Mathematics 6. The Arts/Other

Additional Requirements

Monte requires mandatory completion of a minimum 50 hours of Community & Service.

IB requires completion of a 4,000 word Extended Essay. Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) requires a minimum of 150 hours. IB DP students also undertake Studies in Catholic Thought internally.

Assessment Internal assessments and externally assessed components (including examinations) carry equal weightings in each subject.

Assessment within the IB Diploma is based on a combination of moderated internal assessments, externally assessed components and final examinations.

Grading System Students receive a percentage result in each 2 Unit subject, which is converted to a Band 6 (highest) to a Band 1. A mark out of 50 is awarded in 1 Unit subjects. Every student passes the HSC provided she has satisfactorily completed the course.

Students receive a grade of 1 to 7 in each academic subject, with up to three core points awarded on combined performance in Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. The Diploma is only awarded to students who meet minimum standards and prescribed conditions.

In Years 7 to 10, all Monte students undertake a course of study that meets the requirements of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Record of School Achievement and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.

At the completion of Year 10, as shown right, students elect to undertake either the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP). Both options prepare the students for opportunities at tertiary institutions, locally and internationally.

HSC or IB Diploma – what is the difference? Both the HSC and the IB Diploma require students to commit to a significant increase in workload compared to Year 10. Both courses of study require students to be willing to develop independent learning skills as well as effective time management and organisational skills. The choice between the HSC and the IB Diploma is made by students, taking into account their own learning styles and subject preferences. Resources at Monte are equitably shared by students in both programs.

The delivery, assessment, grading and scaling of subjects for the HSC and IB DP differ. Below are some comparisons between the two programs.
