CONFLICT RESOLUTION
With Amanda Lardner
And Special Guest
David Porter
1. Why are you (or why are you still) a referee?
2. What situations make you nervous or upset during a game?
Where does confidence matter?
• in the beginning of the game
• every blow of your whistle
• how you act between halves/after the game
• any dealings with any agents of the game
Always Remember
• understand that you have the auth, to eject coaches and to direct parents to leave
• you can abandon the match
• You can introduce yourself to coaches before the game
• stick to your guns – what you decide is the final decision
• Make the right call• If it’s a card, it’s a card!• Follow through on threats/promises
• Knowing the laws of the game is your best tool
Theory – Conflict Resolution
• Identify the conflictual situation
• Understand other persons point of view
-are they saying what’s really upsetting them or are they masking it with something else
• If needed (and if possible) stop for a second… think clearly before acting
• Make a decision for your next action (could be to ignore)
• Ask questions – “why are you angry?” “what result is he/she looking for?” Etc.
Continued
• Find balance/common ground
-to create a peaceful environment
(this doesn’t mean that everyone will be happy)
• Know which soccer law helps you the most
Continued
• Act!
-Calm, rational, logical
• If successful, go on with your life!
• If not, start over (knowing what didn’t work)
You’ve now dealt with a conflict!
When is this useful?
• Dealing with Referees
• Dealing with Coaches
• Dealing with Players
Time to role play!
Coach
• Offside…
• Coach feels like calls are one-sided.
• Coach feels like calling the game for you from the sideline.
• Coach won’t follow substitution instructions
More Coach
• Starting a game late or cutting half times down
• Constructive criticism
Players
• Yellow/red/2nd yellow cards
• Player feels he was fouled, and you disagree.
• Player feels he is being picked on.
• Players have ‘heated moments’.
• The back-talk.
