Now into its eighth year, Tupelo has become a huge hit with music lovers as well as the artists who have graced its stage. Having re-ceived much critical acclaim, both the number of performances and attendance grows each year. Tupelo provides a memorable experience for both the audience and the artists.

Arrows in the Air

www.myspace.com/arrowsintheair

Arrows in the Air is made up of a combination of two Islands—one part Newfoundland and two parts PEI. Although Arrows appears to be a new band, these three guys have over 35 years of musical experience playing in regional acts and have collectively compiled over 15 indus-try awards or nominations, including ECMA and Music PEI recognition.

After an inspiring experience in Ath-ens, GA with acclaimed producer Da-vid Barbe, Arrows in the Air released, Shadows on the Skyline. To promote their debut album, the band has been busy booking shows all over the east coast and central Canada.

Arrows have established themselves as a high energy live band that will leave you wanting more. Blending the pop hook songwriting style of Bruce White with hard rock rhythm section of brothers Craig and Brady MacDonald leaves the listener with memorable sing-a-longs that last long after the show is over.

“Great Song…Ladies and Gentlemen, there are a lot of really great songs on this record.”

English Words

www.englishwordsband.com

Charlottetown was imprisoned in a sea of snow this past winter. Perfect conditions for an artistic rebirth. English Words are back with an entire Sharpie’s worth of new songs borrowing heavily from a fresh pal-ate of dance rhythms, samples, me-lodic and sometimes cinematic pop. Think: Happy Mondays, Star Wars, Legend of Zelda, Abba, DJ Shadow, Kanye West, and Tom Waits. Call it

“Electro-Something”, both ridiculous and justified. Wild Technicolor blast-ing through frozen white waves piled high on houses.

Gordie MacKeeman & His Rhythm Boys

“Charming, toe-tapping talent that makes you want to buy all of them a beer and beg them to be your best friends.”

What do you get when you combine a love of down east fiddle tunes with old time music and throw in some crazy dance moves that remind you of Donald O’Connor? Gordie MacK-eeman & His Rhythm Boys.

Risen from the ashes of the multi-ECMA award-winning band Grass Mountain Hobos, Gordie MacK-eeman & His Rhythm Boys (winners of two Music PEI awards in 2011) are giving down east fiddle music a sincere and energetic reshaping by combining in their love of bluegrass and old time music. If you listen closely to they will take you back to those long abandoned roadhouses and community halls from across the countryside. The tunes ring with down home authenticity while keep-ing a relaxed and natural vibe.

The chemistry of these old friends is obvious on every tune and you have no choice but to stop what you’re doing and listen. Thriving on live performance, these boys are hap-piest when out on the road playing and connecting with an audience.

His voice will catch your attention, the stories in his songs keeps you listening. Jordan Cameron has been making a name for himself on Prince Edward Island since the release of his debut EP, Drawing From Ob-servation, in late 2009. Since then he has played all across the Island, and showcased on ECMA Stages in both 2010 and 2011. In May of 2011, Jordan released a live CD entitled Songs Played In A Room Full Of People. It is an album that captures what Jordan brings to the stage when he performs.

Now Jordan’s first full-length album, My, What A Lovely Hate, is complete and will be released in late September of 2011. It is a prime example of where his songwriting and performing has evolved to in just a few short years.

“Katie McGarry possesses the one thing that anyone in her position needs; she has a voice that drips out of the speakers like warm sweet honey. She has the kind of voice that could come out of a radio anytime in the past sixty years; it is not out of time, just timeless.”

Make no mistake, having grown up in a musical family, this talented 22-year-old singer-songwriter is ready to take her place in the rich history and tradition of East Coast singer-songwriters that have made their mark on the global stage.

Katie is coming off a busy year of playing gigs both solo and with her band that started with a sold out CD release show at The Guild with Meaghan Blanchard in October 2010. Max Keenlyside

myspace.com/maxkeenlyside

Max Keenlyside is an 19-year-old pianist and composer from Prince Edward Island. He first got involved in music at the age of nine, and since then has amassed a formidable ros-ter of over 60 original compositions. Max is also known for his stride and

“Jelly Roll” Morton chops, as well as a firm grounding in the ragtime piano tradition. A favourite at jazz and rag-time festivals across North America, and a PEI representative in the Canadian National Artist’s Program held in conjunction with the 2010 Olympics, pianist and composer Max is a “musician’s musician” in the very best sense.

Keenlyside plays with plenty of pep and energy (but never too fast!) and his performances are laced with hu-mour, all the while remaining faithful to the spirit and intent of the origi-nal composers. He is known espe-cially for his renditions of pieces by Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Eubie Blake, and other stride and early jazz composers. Max’s first album, KeenlyStride, was released in May of 2010. He currently resides in Charlottetown, pursuing various musical projects.

Meaghan Blanchard

myspace.com/meaghanelizabeth-blanchard

Meaghan Blanchard is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter from Hunter River, PE. Her album Chasin’ Lonely Again was a 2011 ECMA award winner, and her album Changing Things picked up four 2009 Music PEI awards including Folk Album of the Year and received two ECMA nomination.

She was one of a select group of art-ists chosen to perform at the royal concert for Kate and Prince William’s visit to PEI in July 2011. She has also performed at the Cavendish Music Festival, the PEI Jazz and Blues Festival, the Malpeque Folk Festival Concert On The Row, and the Indian River Music Festival this summer.

Meaghan has appeared on three ECMA Awards shows as a performer, as well as the 2009 nationally-televised Canada Games Opening Ceremonies, and was part of a TV special on East Coast artists recently broadcast on the CMT network. She performed 47 shows in 15 days dur-ing the Vancouver Winter Olympics and was one of four artists selected to perform with the Nova Scotia Symphony in the 2011 ECMA’s gala concert, A Sound Celebration.

Meaghan will showcase at OCFF in October and head to Alberta in February 2012 for her second Home Routes tour in Western Canada in as many years.

Molly Rankin

mollyrankin.com

With a hearty upbringing of tradi-tional Celtic music spawning from a family of musicians, Molly had gained inspiration to tackle the music beast herself. Throughout her acne-stricken teen years in Cape Breton she performed at many local venues and set out on a cross-country tour with her family of Rankins but, coming off of tour and into her 20s, she developed a thirst for pop. In June of 2009 she hopped into a sweat-stained minivan with some new acquaintances and found her destination on Kempt Road in Charles Austin’s studio. Eschewing the typical singer-songwriter fare, Molly has carved her musical niche closer to Jett than Baez. “Punk folk!” rabid fans exclaimed at her Hali-gonian debut; “Shut the folk up!” Molly rebutted.

Her rollicking debut, SHE EP, casts a wide net, simultaneously trawling the sonic seas of Joni Mitchell, Roy Orbison, and Paul Simon. Due to the success of her first EP, Molly has found a spot on the Windish Agency roster, recently touring with Peter Bjorn & John, and Hollerado. As for the fall, a new recording is in the works, accompanied by frantic and unorganized touring.

Racoon Bandit

racoonbandit.com

Racoon Bandit are picking up steam in the non-steam era. The folk-rock outfit formed in 2009 in a well-lit porch in Charlottetown, PE, when songwriters Fraser McCallum and Adam Gallant both tumbled back onto red soil.

Together with bassist Scott Gallant and drummer/songwriter Roger Carter, the full quartet blends poetic lyrics with a driving rhythm section, punchy harmonies, and gripping guitar flashes. Equal parts alt-folk and indie-rock, the Bandit sound has drawn comparisons to early Neil Young, Wilco, and Frightened Rabbit.

Racoon Bandit recently released their second album, Into the Hills, on Collagen Rock Records. This full-length collection of folk and folk rock songs ranges in texture from wistful ballads to punchy pop-rock to roots-rock shuffles.

Nominees for the 2011 ECMAs and winners of the 2011 Music PEI Video of the Year Award, Racoon Bandit has shared the stage with many greats including April Wine, Two Hours Traffic, Said the Whale, In-Flight Safety, and Erin Costelo.

Rebels

grouperebels.com

Even though both Jean-Eudes Turbide and Steeve Poirier lived on the same island, the Magdelen Is-lands, for almost 30 years, it wasn’t until they both ended up on Prince Edward Island that they discovered each other’s passion for music. In the fall of 2009, Steeve and Jean-Eudes met for the first time, and cre-ated the band Rebels. A few months later, Rebels released their first self-titled album which combined various French styles of folk music from Atlantic Canada.

Since their first album, Rebels trav-elled all over—discovering different music and working towards creating a sound they can call their own. The music is a refreshing twist of tra-ditional music from the Magdelen Islands, inspired by the local tradi-tions of the region. Rebels recently recorded a new album, which has been promoted in both Québec and France.

Richard Wood

Award-winning Prince Edward Island fiddler Richard Wood has performed all over the world, including Carnegie Hall with The Chieftains, and on David Letterman with Shania Twain. Most recently, he performed for the Duke and Duch-ess of Cambridge during their Royal Visit to Canada, and with Symphony Nova Scotia at the East Coast Music Awards in 2011.

Combining deep-rooted tradi-tional prowess with high-voltage rock’n’roll attitude, each perfor-mance includes elements of Celtic jigs and reels tempered with beauti-fully melodic original airs.

Richard’s exciting live show dazzles with unending energy & pounding rhythms, along with virtuoso mu-sicianship and an endearing stage presence. He is accompanied on guitar, vocals and bodhran by Gor-don Belsher.

“Truly Richard Wood and Gordon Belsher brought the house down at St. Kieran’s! From opening explosion to standing ovation, they endeared themselves into our hearts forever!”

“Let me brag about my friend Tim Chaisson. I was originally impressed with him as a songwriter but through-out the process of recording this record I’ve come to realize that Tim is not only a great vocalist but also a multi-instrumentalist with talent far beyond his years. I even got him to play on my new record.”
