THE CONFERENCE THEMES

MONDAY OCT 5, 2015 – SESSION THEMES

• Globalisation – Context and Challenges for Australia and Japan [Keynote Address]

What challenges will Australia-Japan relations face in the period ahead in the overarching fields of their economies, politics, diplomacy and defence co-operation? A keynote speech will be given by a leading Japanese commentator.

• Expanding Investment and Trade Under JAEPA

After many years of negotiation, 2015 has seen the commencement of the Japan Australia Economic Partnership Agreement. Whilst there have been immediate benefits in tariff reductions in high profile areas such as beef and wine, the opportunities for Australian companies in the wide ranging services sector to utilise provisions under JAEPA presents potential. In this session presenters and panellists will give their views on how this will lead to a further diversification of trade and investment between Australia and Japan and predict possible opportunities.

• Global Corporate Governance Challenges

Prime Minister Abe has flagged the improvement of this corporate governance as one of the “3 arrows” under his Government’s growth strategy. The third arrow is concerned with structural reforms aimed to increase productivity and competitiveness of companies on the global stage. This session is designed to exchange views on the issues and experiences in Australia and Japan related to corporate governance and enhance the investment environment for global investors. • Preparing Future Business Leaders for Asia

With the growth engine shifting to the Asian region, this session will explore how to best develop the managerial talent capable of working in the Asian business environment. Covering both the corporate and tertiary education fields, presenters will outline the priority issues in the development of “global human capital”. A special feature of this session will be input from the newly formed Future Leaders Program which is aimed at emerging leader talent amongst member companies, as well as an update on Australia’s “New Colombo Plan”.

Conference Networking Drinks and Welcome Dinner

The conference highlight is the Welcome Dinner which gives attendees the opportunity to network and also deepen their discussions with others concerning the themes picked up in the conference as well as their own particular business.

TUESDAY OCT 6, 2015 – SESSION THEMES

• Regional Areas Going Global – Fukuoka

Kyushu has long been an entry point into the nearby countries in Asia. How are Kyushu based companies engaging in the region and how might this be another opportunity for Australian and Japanese companies to collaborate. • Recalibration of the Minerals and Energy Industries

2015 has seen dramatic shifts in energy and resource prices with significant knock-on effects for the industry and suppliers. Such dramatic changes force a major reappraisal of both the demand/supply situation as well as the investment outlook. This session is all about the “recalibration” of the mid term outlook. With the climate change meeting, COP21 scheduled for Paris starting in November 2015, presenters in this session will cover the complex interplay of factors impacting on the minerals and energy outlook.

• New Industries – New Opportunities

Whilst investments in resources, energy and agricultural commodities have traditionally been dominant, the expansion and diversification of Japan’s investment in Australia has recently turned to a raft of new areas with investments in housing, financial services, apparel, food, logistics and others. This session will look at the engagement, both by Japanese companies in Australia as well as Australian companies in Japan. This diversification is opening up a number of new business opportunities and also highlighting the need for a wider range of Australian companies to develop their skills in engaging with Japanese corporate customers.

• Closing: Tying It All Together

In this wrap-up session, the Conference Chairman, Dr Akio Mimura, AC, Chairman of the JABCC will extract the main points emerging from the two day meeting. He will be joined by Conference Co-Chairman, Sir Rod Eddington, AO, President of the AJBCC.
