E-Learning Our online web portal is for learners to access college information, use the E-Zone for course and lesson updates, and keep in touch with tutors and friends using the college phone directory and webmail.

The Learning Centre (Library) Open five days a week with thousands of books, journals and course materials and a huge collection of DVDs. You can use the library for photocopying, printing, emailing, video editing, online research or your own quiet study and reading.

The Salon Our fully equipped professional salon serves hair and beauty clients while giving our learners invaluable work experience alongside qualified professionals in the salon and treatment rooms. The Salon is open Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 4pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 6.30pm and 8pm during term time. Appointments are available to the public.

Childcare Facilities We may be able to offer you financial support to assist with childcare fees. We also have partnerships with local childcare providers helping with places for parents.

Students’ Union Our local branch of the National Union of Students (NUS) represents student views on college issues. We also take an active role in organising student social events. The NUS membership card gives discounts at a wide range of shops and entertainment venues across London.

Funding your studyThere are no fees to pay if you are 16-18 and meet certain residency and immigration conditions. If you are 19 or over you will have to pay fees on most courses (you’ll find further details of the fees for UK and overseas learners on page 108 of this guide). If you do need help, however, you’ll find the staff in our Learner Support Service very helpful. These key staff assess your individual circumstances and match you to any financial support that you are eligible for. You may be able to get help with course and exam fees, materials, equipment or childcare.

Train to Gain funding to support your businessThis government-backed initiative helps employees gain valuable skills, while employers improve the efficiency and productivity of their businesses. The initiative helps train employees to achieve a full NVQ Level 2/3, and it may be completely free or with significant discounts providing your employees meet some basic eligibility criteria.

How it works Our ETS team works with you to provide flexible, customised training solutions to suit your particular business needs. We can deliver training throughout London and the Home Counties, either at your company’s premises or here at the College.

A member of our ETS team meets you to talk through your organisation’s needs. We will then develop a training plan for your organisation. For example:

Taster sessions – short courses that introduce learners to a subject

Customised courses – tailored specifically for your company’s requirements

Certificated courses – accredited training, where learners who successfully complete the course will be awarded a recognised qualification, such as an NVQ, from organisations like City & Guilds.

This course is for those who wish to find out about the many areas of art, design and media. It offers a choice of routes into further education and employment. You will study six units which include: exploring visual language in art, design and media; exploring materials, techniques and processes in art; exploring and developing design and media; art, design and media ideas; and a personal project in art, design or media. There is also a choice of two specialist units which could include video production, 2D or graphic design. You will learn the basic practical skills necessary to make art and media products using a video camera and editing.

Requirements: You will need 2 GCSEs at grade E-F (one of which should be English) or a BTEC Entry Level qualification and Literacy and Numeracy at Entry Level 3.

Art and Design BTEC First Diploma Level 2

Course code: FDzMARD1

This course is for those with a flair for art and design. It will help you to develop motivation and direction, as well as a broad range of skills and competencies to improve your career prospects. The following design disciplines are taught: drawing, painting, graphics and computer graphics, 3D design, photography, research studies, sketchbook studies, fashion and constructed textiles. A team of practising artists and designers deliver the course specialisms in our purpose built studios and facilities.

Requirements: You will need four GCSEs at grades D-E, a reasonable standard of English and maths, eg. litaracy and numeracy at level 1 and a portfolio of well presented art work from school projects and/or other art and design work from outside school. Work/life experience of mature candidates will be taken into consideration.

This course is aimed at those who wish to make a career in the art and design field. You will develop critical awareness through investigation, research and experimentation working with a variety of media, materials and technologies. It covers practical and theoretical work in art production. You will develop skills in: drawing, computer art, graphic design, photography, fashion and textiles, 3D design, painting and printing. Practical work is supported through linked supporting studies.

Requirements: You will need 4 GCSEs at grades A-C or a BTEC First Diploma/Intermediate GNVQ, a portfolio, literacy and numeracy at Level 1/2. Work/life experience of mature candidates will be taken into consideration.

Media BTEC First Diploma Level 2

This course is for those who are at the beginning of their career and have chosen to specialise in an area of media. Compulsory units include: investigating media industry, video production skills, advertisement production, factual programme production, study of different media products and audiences, practical work in print and photography. You will also develop key skills in communication.

Requirements: You will need 2-4 GCSEs at grade D-E, literacy and numeracy at Level 1 and a satisfactory record of achievement. Work/life experience of mature candidates will be taken into consideration.

Media (Moving Image) BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: NC3MMvM1

This course is for those interested in media who wish to take further qualifications and gain experience. It covers practical and theoretical work in video production. You will develop skills in: video editing, film studies, advertising, documentary and drama production. You will also investigate theoretically the work of the moving image industry looking at audiences and markets for a range of moving image projects and develop research skills.

Requirements: You will need 4 GCSEs at grades A-C or BTEC First Diploma or Intermediate GNVQ and literacy and numeracy at Level 1/2. Work/life experience of mature learners will be taken into consideration.

Interactive Media BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3

Course code: NC3MNAM1

This course is a two A Level equivalent course that will provide a broad based programme for a range of careers in the field of interactive media. The compulsory subjects are: contextual influences in art and design, ideas and concepts in art and design, materials, techniques and processes in art and design, visual communication in art and design, visual recording in art and design. Much practical work takes place in our specialist media facilities and the College’s IT suite.

Requirements: You will need 4 GCSEs at grade A-C (ideally including mathematics and English), or a pass at First Diploma for Media or IT Practitioners course, or a pass at Intermediate GNVQ in Media or Information Technology, or a merit at BTEC First Diploma in a related subject and literacy and numeracy at Level 1. Work/life experience of mature learners will be taken into consideration.

This course is designed to provide a good foundation in music, dance and drama. This is a unique course offering the opportunity to work alongside the innovative Chickenshed Theatre Company and enjoy the benefits of studying the performing arts in their purpose built theatre. The course includes a variety of units such as: musical theatre, acting techniques, contemporary theatre, dance performance, performance workshop, performing arts business, singing, film, TV acting and contemporary dance.

All organisations need good managers and administrators to function effectively. Opportunities for skilled and qualified people in marketing, finance, human resources, management and administration are wide-ranging.

This is a full-time programme for those who want to improve their spoken English, literacy and numeracy skills whilst learning about a specific vocational area. Subjects include: team working and basic office services. Your course will include an element of support to help you succeed. Work experience is an important part of the course.

You will follow a core programme of applied communication, numeracy and IT and complete a portfolio which will provide evidence of the work completed during the course.

Requirements: You will need Entry Level 2 Skills for Life qualifications or the College’s initial assessment to show readiness for Entry Level 3.

Business and Administration NVQ Level 1

Course code: NV1MBUS2

This course is an introduction to office administration and will develop your administrative skills and improve your written and spoken English, enhancing your employment opportunities. Mature applicants who wish to update existing skills or re-train will find this course useful.

Subjects include: computing, keyboarding, telecommunications (fax, telephones, etc.), communications (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and general administrative skills.

Requirements: You will need 2 GCSEs at grade A-F (including English an advantage). Basic skills in reading, writing and speaking English, and simple mathematics (Entry Level 3 literacy and numeracy). Previous experience in administration may be taken into consideration.

This course is designed to meet the requirements of industry and commerce for highly trained and motivated office staff. Mature applicants who wish to update existing skills or re-train will find this course useful. The emphasis is on developing office administration skills as required by industry at a junior level.

Subjects include: computing, keyboarding, telecommunications (fax, telephones, etc.), communications (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and general administrative skills.

Requirements: You will need 2 GCSEs at grade A-D or a pass at NVQ Level 1 Administration or equivalent or evidence of previous qualifications. A good standard of reading, writing and spoken English and simple mathematics (Entry Level 3/Level 1 literacy and numeracy). Previous relevant experience which you can provide evidence for, perhaps from a job.

BUSINESS

Business and ICT National Certificate OCR Level 1

Course code: NC1MBUT2

This course is an ideal introduction to the worlds of business and ICT. You will study 12 units consisting of: working as a team, investigating businesses and the impact of ICT, introducing practical business skills, investigating options for work, communication skills, problem solving in business and ICT, what is a business?, working in retail and services, introducing e-commerce, developing a new business idea, office administration, working in distribution. You will be required to undertake a period of two weeks work experience which will be linked to one or more of the assignments.

Requirements: You will need 2 GCSEs at grade A-F and literacy and numeracy at Entry Level 3. Mature learners are eligible providing they complete the College’s initial assessment and gain Entry Level 3 or above in literacy and numeracy.

Business National Certificate OCR Level 2

Course code: NC2MBSN2

This course is aimed at those interested in a career in business. It will improve your career prospects by providing job specific and business related skills as well as a broader knowledge and understanding of the business world.

You will study four core units: investigating business, enterprise and operations, finance in business and communication in business. In addition, you will study two additional units: keeping customers happy and work experience in business. You will undertake two weeks work experience to help with this unit. A BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels. This is a practical work related course that provides a broad based programme of achievement for a range of careers in the many areas of science.

You study 18 units including six core units: fundamentals of science, working in the science industry, scientific investigation, scientific practical techniques, perceptions of science, application of number for science technicians. Then you will choose 12 from the following specialist units: mathematics for science technicians, statistics for science technicians, using science in the workplace, physiology of human body systems, physiology of human regulation and reproduction, biochemical techniques, energy changes, sources and applications, microbiological techniques, chemistry for biology technicians, electrical circuits and their industrial applications, genetics and genetic engineering, practical chemical analysis, medical physics techniques, biomedical science techniques, chemical laboratory techniques, principles of plant and soil science, industrial applications of chemical reactions, chemical periodicity and its applications, industrial applications of organic chemistry.

You will complete projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands and introduce you to the different science related employment areas.

Requirements: You will need four GCSEs at grades A-C (including double certificate science) or BTEC First Diploma in a related subject. You need literacy and numeracy at Level 2. Work/life experience of mature candidates will be taken into consideration.

Sporting Futures Level 1

Entering employment in the sports, leisure and recreation industries is often very difficult. This could be due to age, lack of experience or not having the right industrial qualifications. This course has been designed with school leavers in mind, and during the course you will gain the skills, qualifications and experience required to seek employment in leisure centres, gyms and other providers of sporting activities. This course will consist of 15 hours per week in College spread across three days, plus one day per week on work experience. The programme consists of a series of industry required qualifications including: community sports leaders award, customer service, NVQ in sport and recreation, exercise and fitness, literacy, numeracy and IT.

Requirements: You will need 3 GCSEs at grade A-F, with literacy and numeracy at Entry Level 3. A satisfactory reference and criminal background clearance is required.

Sporting Futures Level 2

Entering employment in the sports, leisure and recreation industries is often very difficult. This could be due to age, lack of experience or not having the right industrial qualifications. This new course has been designed to provide young people with the opportunity to build a portfolio of qualifications and industrial experience to gain employment in leisure centres, gyms and other providers of sporting activities. This course will consist of 15 hours per week in College spread across three days, plus one day per week on work experience. The programme consists of a series of industry required qualifications which will be delivered over the year. These include: first aid, coaching awards (various sports), exercise and fitness, life guarding, ISRM (Institute of Sport and Recreation Management), gym instructing, circuit training, literacy, numeracy and ITQ (Information Technology Qualification).

Requirements: You will need 3 GCSEs at grade A-D or a recognised Level 1 qualification in sport, with literacy and numeracy at Level 1. A satisfactory reference and criminal background clearance is required.

This is a new qualification for 14-19 year olds, where there will be a mix of class work and hands on experience, as well as going out into the industry to gain some experience in the workplace

The Higher Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure will look at 3 main areas: The individual – exploring how important an active and healthy lifestyle is, as well as how the body works and the impact of unhealthy choices like smoking and drinking. The industry – learning all about the sport and active leisure industry, and who works in it, including sports clubs, specialist colleges, commercial sponsors and funding agencies like Sport England and the National Lottery. The community – finding out why the sport and active leisure industry is described as ’people-centred’, developing the all-important customer service and relationship building skills you’ll need to succeed in it.

The Higher Diploma will also cover more areas including the design and development of new products, anatomy, physiology, government policy, the role of the media and communication techniques.

Requirements: You must have an interest in working in the sports sector and successfully pass our interview and initial assessment. We will also require a satisfactory reference.

Football Academy

If you have a passion for football, you could choose to combine your studies with a place in our Football Academy, and receive training, coaching and game experience at Borehamwood Football Club.

The Football and Academic School of Excellence requires a successful trial at Borehamwood Football Club and additional qualifications to help us provide you with an individualised learning programme.

You can combine your academy place with any of the sports courses offered from Levels 1 to 3 at the Enfield or Tottenham Centres. You will attend the course at college as normal, but in addition, receive football training, coaching and game experience at Borehamwood FC to prepare you for the challenges ahead.

As well as a successful trial with Borehamwood FC you will need a good reference. Your timetable will allow the flexibility to balance a passion for the game of football with academic excellence. Being a member of the Football Academy gives you the opportunity to pursue a career as a semi- or professional footballer.

FEES AND FINANCIAL HELP

Some of our courses are free, but most have tuition, exams, materials and equipment costs. Whether you pay fees, and how much you pay, will depend on the kind of course you do, your age and personal circumstances.

Residence, home fees and international learnersMany of our courses are funded by the government and students who are settled in the UK, and have lived here for at least three years, will normally pay home fees (the standard rate). Home fees are also paid by other groups, such as residents of the EU/EEA and refugees. You’ll find details of home fees below.

Students who are visitors to the UK, or who do not meet the residence requirements, pay a higher international (overseas) rate of fees. International learners are required to study at least 15 hours a week and on a Level 3 course as part of their visa requirements.

FINANCIAL HELP WHILE YOU LEARN

In addition to the concessions in the table overleaf, there are a number of ways that learners may get help with fees and the costs of study.

Learner Support FundThe Learner Support Fund provides eligible learners with help towards the cost of course fees, materials, equipment, exam fees and childcare. You need to apply early – as soon as you enrol – as funds are limited.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)If you are aged 16 to 18 and studying on a full-time course, you may be eligible for an EMA of up to £30 a week. For an application form visit www.moneytolearn.direct.gov.uk or pick one up at the College when you come in for interview.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)With an ALG you could get up to £30 a week during term time – that is around £1,000 a year.
