    Temporal Union with Christ

Rom 16:7: Greet Andronicus and Junias,my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners, whoare outstanding among the apostles, who

also were in Christ before me. The in Christ relationship has a

primordial, or pre-temporal aspect (as welearned in our last lesson),

But it also has a temporal, in time aspect, which explains Rom 16:7.

    Temporal Union with Christ

What this means is that although you wereunited with Christ (in Christ) before time

    began,

It is also true that you entered into unionwith Christ after time began, at a pointduring your lifetime.

    What Repentance Is Not

It is not simply sorrow for sin

2 Cor 7:9-10: I now rejoice, not that you weremade sorrowful, but that you were made

sorrowful to the point of repentance; for youwere made sorrowful according to the will ofGod, so that you might not suffer loss inanything through us. For the sorrow that is

according to the will of God produces arepentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

Luke 18:23: But when [a rich ruler] hadheard these things [sell all that you

possess and distribute it to the poor, andyou shall have treasure in heaven; andcome, follow Me], he became very sad,

    for he was extremely rich.

    What Repentance Is Not

It is not simply sorrow for sin

Matt 27:3: Then when Judas, who had betrayedHim, saw that He had been condemned, he felt

remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silverto the chief priests and elders, saying, I have

sinned by betraying innocent blood. But they

said, What is that to us? See to that yourself!

And he threw the pieces of silver into the templesanctuary and departed; and he went away andhanged himself.

    What Repentance Is Not

It is not simply a change of mind about whoJesus is

This idea takes the definition of one Greek word

used for repentance (metano and itscognatesthere are others), divorces it from itsusage, and assigns it to the entire doctrine.

The standard Greek lexicon (BDAG) does notlist any references from the NT in connectionwith this meaning.

Jer 3:22-4:1: "Return, O faithless sons, I will heal yourfaithlessness." "Behold, we come to You; For You are the LORD ourGod. Surely, the hills are a deception, A tumult on the mountains.Surely in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. But theshameful thing has consumed the labor of our fathers since ouryouth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.

Let us lie down in our shame, and let our humiliation cover us; forwe have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day. And we have not obeyed the voiceof the LORD our God." 4:1 "If you will return, O Israel," declares theLORD, "Then you should return to Me. And if you will put away yourdetested things from My presence, And will not waver, And you willswear, 'As the LORD lives,' In truth, in justice and in righteousness; Then the nations will bless themselves in Him, And in Him they willglory." For thus says the LORD to the men of Judah and toJerusalem, "Break up your fallow ground, And do not sow amongthorns. Circumcise yourselves to the LORD And remove theforeskins of your heart, Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,Or else My wrath will go forth like fire And burn with none to quench

    What Repentance Is: NT

The New Testament concept of repentanceflows from the Old Testament (as you mightexpect). John the Baptist

Matt 3:2, 8, 11: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is athand.8Therefore bear fruit in keeping withrepentance.11As for me, I baptize you with water forrepentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I,and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize youwith the Holy Spirit and fire.

John the Baptists ministry is especially significant forunderstanding the doctrine of repentance because heforms the bridge between the Old Covenant and NewCovenant communities.
