Concept of Multiplication (Revision)

Introducing the Concept of Division

using a Partition and Quotition Resource

Use of the Partition Mat

One Sunday morning the sun was shining and I went to visit the zoo. On my arrival I saw 8 wild animals all in a fenced enclosure

Use of the Partition Mat

I wanted to share those 8 wild animals with the 4 empty cages I had just walked past

Use of the Partition Mat

How many wild animals will go in each of the 4 cages?

Lets have a look………..

Use of the Partition Mat

1 in each of the cages and we still have more wild animals to share

Now lets try 2 in each of the cages

Use of the Partition Mat

Have we shared the wild animals out fairly?

How many wild animals did we start with……….’8’

How many wild animals are in each of the cages…….’2’

What did we do?

Use of the Partition Mat

We had 8 wild animals, we shared them out between the 4 cages and each of the cages got 2 wild animals.

Did we have any wild animals left over?

Revision of Multiplication using the Division Resource

Turning the partition mat around we can model multiplication

Revision of Multiplication using the Division Resource

This mat is showing each of the 4 cages have 2 wild animals living inside

Revision of Multiplication using the Division Resource

How many animals are there altogether?

How could we work this out……………..

2 by 4 = 8

So 8 shared by 4 = 2

And 4 by 2 or 2 by 4 = 8

Using the Division resource to show Quotition

This is a quotition mat

Quotition is repeated subtraction where a small quantity is

repeatedly subtracted from a large amount. Finding the

number of groups to share in total.

Using the Division resource to show Quotition

I have 6 animals and I am going to give my animals to the local zoo

Using the Division resource to show Quotition

I want to give 2 animals to each of the empty cages.

How many animals can I give to the zoo?

Using the Division resource to show Quotition

Lets take a look…………

2 animals for the 1st cage

Using the Division resource to show Quotition

2 animals for the 2nd cage

Using the Division resource to show Quotition

2 animals for the 3rd cage

Using the Division resource to show Quotition

So I can put my 6 animals into 3 of the cages, if I put 2 animals in each of the cages

Have we shared the animals out fairly?

Have we any left over?

How many groups did we use?

Multiplication story using the quotition resource

The zookeeper brought his camera to the open day at the zoo. The zookeeper wanted to take photo’s but could not fit all 6 animals in. He needed them to be shared between the 3 cages?

How could he share them?

How many animals were in the first group?

Multiplication story using the quotition resource

How many in the second group? How many in the third group?

6 shared by 2 = 3

Multiplication story using the quotition resource

3 multiply by 2 = 6

2 multiply by 3 = 6

Multiplication story using the quotition resource

What if we only had 2 cages, how many animals in each? 6 shared by 3 = 2
