Social Issues
• Children and Pornographyo Most people feel children (especially very
young) should be protected from pornographyo Widely available on Internet, can come upon it
by accident, or have it pushed on childo Many legal attempts, all struck down
• May not restrict rights of adults to protect children• Adults have a right to access to almost all writing
and imagery• Exception: pornographic pictures of children
4/2/08 Computers and Society, Class 11 9
Social Issues
• Children and Pornographyo Also, some people say to just pass a law
outlawing pornography, or outlawing distributing pornography to children
o Would that stop children’s exposure to pornography? That is, would it be a solution?

Linking Vs Embedding• For Lab 11 (tonight’s lab)• Putting an “object” from one application
into anothero Object: picture, document, text, chart, movie,
sound, etc.o Application: Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Access, Outlook, etc.o Document – A user file produced by an
application
• One method is linking, the other is embedding
4/2/08 Computers and Society, Class 11 13
Linking Vs Embedding
• Diagramming
• Embedding – a copy of the object is copied from the source document to the clipboard and from there into the destination document
• After this is done, link doesn’t exit anymore
A Document

4/2/08 Computers and Society, Class 11 14
Linking Vs Embedding
• Linking – a link to the original object in the source document is pasted into the destination document
• Link stays (persists)o When destination wants to print or display, it
gets object from source
source destination
4/2/08 Computers and Society, Class 11 15
Linking Vs Embedding
• Linking – when source is updated, destination is automatically updated the next time it is openedo Link gets broken if source or destination is
moved (disadvantage)• Embedding – there is no persistent
connection between the source and destinationo If the source or destination is updated, that
does not affect the othero In effect, two different objects
