Our strong industry links, research and professional accreditations from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) ensure our curriculum is of the highest quality and focused on the most innovative developments in the industry.

As well as developing practical and professional skills in our energy laboratory, dedicated electronic and mechanical laboratories and test facilities, students also have the option to enhance their employability further with a work placement, with current students working at companies such as Cummins, Network Rail and Caterpillar.

Our engineering students also have the opportunity to join the DMU Racing society to design, build and drive a fully-functional race car, competing in the annual Formula Student challenge at the world famous Silverstone race track. You can also join the Electronics Club and gain a practical understanding of how systems are designed and constructed. Students can also broaden their cultural horizons with DMUglobal, where they can embark on international experiences to locations like Berlin, New York and Hong Kong.

One hundred per cent of Mechanical Engineering BEng (Hons) and Mechatronics BEng (Hons) graduates from summer 2017 are in work or further study after graduating, according to the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) 2016-17 report.

We look forward to welcoming you to DMU.

ENERGY ENGINEERING BEng (Hons)

This course is strongly underpinned by traditional engineering principles, but will also help you to develop a specialist understanding of the efficient use of conventional and renewable energies for power generation and modern energy storage solutions.

The production and utilisation of energy has been a key global issue for many decades. Until recently the main focus has been to produce energy using fossil fuels purely for the economic development of nations, with little emphasis on the environmental impact. With the realisation from both government and within industry that energy production and utilisation must be balanced by being more environmentally conscious and energy efficient, energy engineering is growing in importance.

This course will address theoretical and practical aspects of energy production, storage and utilisation, preparing you for a career in a variety of specialist areas of energy engineering.

You will have the opportunity to enhance your employability and gain industry experience by undertaking an optional work placement. Recent DMU engineering placements include experience at Cummings, Network Rail and Caterpillar. Our Engineering graduates work for national/multinational companies, and graduates of this course could go on to careers in production, utilisation, storage and management of energy, design, research and development, environment control and policy making.

Mechatronics is the integration of mechanical, electronic and intelligent control of sub-systems to realise a complete system. Mechatronics helps you to develop a sound analytical proficiency in areas such as embedded systems, digital electronics, and dynamics and control, complemented by the 3D-design and management skills necessary to work in modern industry.

The course has a balance of key analytical subjects and professional skills, so that you can graduate with the confidence to face challenging engineering situations in industry. The technical and management skills necessary to operate successfully as a multidisciplinary engineer in modern industry are promoted and developed at all stages of the course.

As well as this, Mechatronics BEng (Hons) holds an IEng accreditation with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The BEng programme is also accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) to CEng Level, meaning it fulfils the educational requirements for becoming a Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited master’s programme.

100 per cent of our Mechatronics graduates from summer 2017 are in work or further study after graduating, according to the latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) 2016-17 report. Recent graduates are now working for companies such as DB Sander, Catepillar, Jaguar Landrover, Perkins Engines and MPC.

FACILITIES

You will have flexible access to a wide range of specialist equipment in laboratories supported by our team of expert technicians who will help and guide you. Our main Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, is equipped with a range of machine tools for manufacture of student designs and equipment to teach thermo-fluids, solid mechanics and dynamics. It also has a large open-plan area dedicated to the Formula Student teams allowing them to build a petrol-powered race car and an electric race car to be tested at Silverstone.

There is a purpose-built Engine Test Cell to measure engine performance and emissions. Typical student projects conducted in this facility include running the engine with alternative fuels such as bio-fuels and water-in-diesel emulsified fuels to study performance and emission characteristics.

We have a newly developed Energy Laboratory to conduct energy-related experiments. It contains equipment to cover a wide range of thermo-fluid applications such as air-conditioning, heat-pumps and various fundamental experiments such as measurement of thermal conductivity.

A Materials Science Laboratory houses facilities for material microstructure examination and properties testing. Equipment includes microscopes and various properties testers for tensile, fatigue, wear, corrosion, hardness and impact testing.

A specialist Dynamics and Control Laboratory is designed to support the study of dynamics and control. Equipment in this laboratory allows you to study gyroscope theory, vibration theory, non-linear control, inertia bending, etc.

Design Studios are also available with CAD and Finite Element Modelling Software, including CREO and AUTODESK Simulation software for FEA modelling.

Courses are further supported by electronics labs with facilities to teach general electronic principles, power electronics and embedded systems.
