What is CAM?

Complementary and alternative medicine, as defined by NCCAM, is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine.

Page 5: Complementary And Alternative Medicine

What Types of CAM?

Page 6: Complementary And Alternative Medicine

Five Major Types of CAM

The five major types of complementary and alternative medicine are as followed: Alternative Medical Systems

Mind-Body Interventions

Biologically Based Therapies

Manipulative and Body-Based Methods

Energy Therapies

INTERVENTIONS

Alternative medical systems are built upon complete systems of theory and practice. Often, these systems have evolved apart from and earlier than the conventional medical approach used in the United States.

Mind-body medicine uses a variety of techniques designed to enhance the mind’s capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms. Techniques such as patient support groups and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Biologically Based TherapiesManipulative and Body-Based

Methods

Biologically based therapies in CAM use substances found in nature, such as herbs, foods, and vitamins.

Manipulative and body-based methods in CAM are based upon manipulation and /or movement of one or more parts of the body.

Five Major Types of CAM

Energy Therapies The foundation of Energy

Therapies consists of energy fields, which there are two types.

Biofield Therapies- Intends to affect energy fields that purportedly surround and penetrate the human body.

Bioelectromagnetic-based Therapies-It involves the unconventional use of electromagnetic fields, such as pulsed fields, magnetic fields, or alternating-current or even direct-current fields.

Massage

According to Fritz, “Women made early and important contributions to the development of massage and medical gymnastics, primarily in the United States. Contemporary massage has been influenced extensively by women, and 70% to 75% of practicing massage professionals today are women. Two women physicians conducted the first controlled clinical trial of the benefits of massage in the management of disease. Dr. Mary P. Jacobi and Dr. Victoria A. White were professors of medicine in New York City in 1880”(pg.18, 2004).

The Five Basic Techniques

EFFLEURAGE PETRISSAGE

Effleurage is the beginning process upon the massage. Effleurage is a gliding stroke applied with light to moderate pressure (superficial or deep), serving to modulate the arterial supply and venous and lymphatic drainage of the tissues contacted.

Petrissage is more of a vigorous form of technique compare to effleurage technique. According to Micozzi, “Petrissage is somewhat more aggressive than effleurage, with the thumb and fingers working together to lift and “milk” the underlying fascia and muscles in a kneading motion”(2011).

The Five Basic Techniques

FRICTION TAPOTEMENT

The Friction technique can be the most deeply applied massage preformed thus far in the field of CAM, because of the use of the finger tips or thumb in an back and forth movement.

The Tapotement technique involves rapid, repeated blows upon using the sides of the palms of the hands with the hands cupped.

Tapotement is also called Percussion.

Page 17: Complementary And Alternative Medicine

The Five Basic Techniques

VIBRATION

The Vibration technique is not only one of the most draining techniques for the therapist, but it’s the most difficult technique to master or perform.

Page 18: Complementary And Alternative Medicine

What Is Shiatsu?

As expected, “The literal meaning of the Japanese word shiatsu (she-AAHT-sue) is “finger pressure” or “thumb pressure.” Over the centuries, Asian medicine, massage therapy, and twentieth-century advancements have combined to yield “modern” shiatsu”(pg.280, Micozzi, 2011).

What Is Shiatsu Anma Therapy?

According to Micozzi, “Shiatsu anma therapy uses a unique blending of two of the most popular Asian bodywork forms practiced in Japan. Dr. Kaneko introduced traditional anma massage therapy based on the energetic system of traditional Chinese medicine in long form and contemporary pressure therapy, which is based on the neuromusculoskeletal system, in short form.

Aromatherapy

Page 22: Complementary And Alternative Medicine

What is Aromatherapy? According to Micozzi,

“Aromatherapy may be defined as the selected use of essential oils and related products of plant origin with the general goal of improving health and well-being. The word aromatherpie was first used in 1937 by the French perfumer and chemist Rene Maurice Gatterfosse (1881-1950), who, along with pioneers Jean Valnet (1920-199 and Marguerite Maury (1895-1968), is largely credited with the modern revival of interest in the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes”(pg.332, 2011).

Page 23: Complementary And Alternative Medicine

What is Aromatherapy?

For more than over 20 years the use of essential oils has evolved and their benefits formed upon different styles of aromatherapy.

In modern-day aromatherapy, the therapist uses these fragrant and active substances to affect the body-mind such as aromatic medicine or medical aromatherapy. According to Micozzi, “Aromatic medicine, or medical aromatherapy, has its origins in phytotherapy and largely arises, is taught, and is practiced in European countries such as Germany and France where only those who are licensed medical professionals are legally permitted to practice” (2011).

What is Holistic Aromatherapy?

According to Micozzi, “Holistic aromatherapy usually combines essential oils with body massage, and this application remains the main form of aromatherapy as taught and practiced worldwide, with at least 6000 aromatherapists practicing in the United Kingdom alone” (pg.333, 2011). One of my favorite characteristics of this holistic aromatherapy is self-care and home use of essential oils between therapy sessions is usually actively promoted.
