stunning part of the world within such a generous community, but never more so than on the day of the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon. In its fourth year, this event continues to go from strength to strength. We welcome back past entrants, sponsors and local community groups who have all grown to feel as proud of being part of this day as we are. We welcome new runners - from those who are on the journey that is their first fun run through to seasoned marathoners and international elites who have added this event to their running calendar.

Our youngest entrant is 3 and our eldest is 86; that's a statistic that I really enjoy hearing because whilst this is a running festival, the vision has always been to make this a fun, all inclusive celebration of community and what we can achieve together for charity.

I am very proud to be Patron of the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon. Congratulations must be extended to all those involved from competitors to organisers and sponsors. This event raises much-needed funds for charities including Ronald McDonald House Charities and The Westpac Foundation while encouraging active local communities. The route showcases our spectacular beaches with excellent spectator vantage points.I am sure everyone will welcome the involvement of 2015 event ambassador Ben Roberts-Smith, VC, MG.After only three years, the annual 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon has established itself as a significant international event and an important economic driver for the entire Sunshine Coast region.I look forward to seeing you there.

THE HONOURABLE STEVE DICKSON, MP7 SUNSHINE COAST MARATHON PATRON.

“After only three years, the annual 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon has established itself as a significant international event and an important economic driver for the entire Sunshine Coast region.”I am always grateful to live in this

ATLAS MULTISPORTS MANAGING DIRECTOR AND EVENT DIRECTOR JASON CROWTHER

This year we also have new sponsors and new partnerships that will help ensure that this is a sustainable, long-term event but most importantly we have the continued support of our entrants, and as Event Director, I thank you.

Channel 7 Event Ambassadors, General Manager of 7 QLD, Ben Roberts-Smith, VC, MG and Sunrise Weather Presenter, Edwina Bartholomew are gearing up for the 10km event on August 30. We asked them why they chose to get involved."The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon has made a great contribution back to local community in the last three years and it continues to grow and develop into a world-class platform for people to engage in teams and achieve great social outcomes," Ben Roberts-Smith said."I welcome people to challenge themselves, not just physically, but also to raise funds and awareness for the things they are passionate about."After just three years, the annual 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon has established itself as one of Australia's most loved running festivals and given back more than $500,000 to local charities and community groups, with 100% of profits going to organisations such as Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Westpac Foundation and more than 70 worthwhile causes chosen by competitors.Event director Jason Crowther said Ben Roberts-Smith was the perfect fit with the culture and values of the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon and organisers were honoured to have his support.

"He continuously challenges himself to be the best he can be, not just physically, but for his family and his community," Mr Crowther said. "While this event is a celebration of health and keeping active, it was born from a desire to give back to the community. Ben embodies this philosophy perfectly."

For Edwina, the fit with the event was obvious. Her love of adventure and fun, combined with her passion for this country and enthusiasm to get engaged in community and charity causes made this unique festival something she was proud to be a part of.

Help us open doors to brighter futures across Queensland

At the Westpac Foundation, our vision is to open doors to a brighter future for more Australians. Thanks to the help of our many generous supporters, we’re working to build vibrant communities across Queensland, where everyone gets a go.

Funds raised at the 2015 Sunshine Coast Marathon will have a direct impact on creating brighter futures for disadvantaged men and women in our local community. Thanks to your support last year, $163,995 in Westpac Foundation Community Grants were awarded to local Queensland organisations, including grants to Compass Institute Inc and Suncoast Care in support of their remarkable work in helping people with a disability and the homeless on the Sunshine Coast.

This year, we would love to support even more deserving organisations who are helping create brighter futures across Queensland. Lisa Waldron, Executive Officer of the Westpac Foundation says these Community Grants address tough social issues, such as homelessness, domestic violence, unemployment, a shortage of affordable housing and mental illness experienced by many Australian families.

"The need right now in our communities is significant. The generous donations given by our employees and customers mean more funds than ever will go directly back into their local communities through the Westpac Foundation. These grants help to open doors for those who need a hand-up to improve their futures,” Lisa says.

Thank you in advance for helping support Queensland communities through your involvement in the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon.

Elites embody 'run for a reason' ethos

KENYA'S Andrew Kimanthi tops a star-studded line-up for this years 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon, with the 2014 champion returning to defend his title.

Kimanthi blitzed his competition last year to win in a time of 2hrs20min32sec. However, this year is shaping up to be a fierce competition as Kimanthi goes head to head with in-form Ethiopian, Samuel Woldemanuel.

Woldemanuel, 34, recently took out the Brisbane Marathon and boasts a personal best time of 2:08.45. In fine weather, it is very possible that we will see a time of 2:18 this year.

Clay Dawson, who finished second to Woldemanuel in Brisbane, will also take part in the men's marathon and is one to watch having placed second last year to Kimanthi.Patrick Nispel will be the male to watch in the half-marathon.

If Kimanthi does win, his hometown will benefit. Proceeds from his event prize money will be used to help him open a project to assist the kids in his community.

"He actually looks after three foster children." Said Event Director, Jason Crowther.

In the women's event, Roxie Fraser will attempt to defend her title. Whilst Samantha Gash and Sara Gibbs can also run below 2:50.

Samantha is the first female, and youngest person, to complete Racing the Planet’s Four Deserts Grand Slam in one calendar year, but not only is she an extraordinary endurance athlete, she is an active

social entrepreneur and this was what drew her interest in the festival.

Whilst racing in the Himalayas she discovered that her motivation to push that hard… for herself, was not so strong. Since that point, Samantha has partnered with Save the Children Australia to support their domestic and overseas programs through her ability to run. She now finds far greater reward in running for change and for a reason outside of herself.

Team All Stars Run for Reading

On 30 August 2015, Team All Stars will be running their third 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon in support of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This incredible team of women hope to raise awareness and funds to get books into the hands of some of the most disadvantaged Australians.

Who are Team All Stars and why do they run?

Dr Anita Heiss (Sydney) Author and Ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).

“I started running at the age of 45 as a means of getting fit. Within months I saw not only the health benefits of running but also I quickly learned the greater impact of running for a cause. I chose the Indigenous Literacy Foundation because I can’t imagine my world without books. I run for the ILF because I know reading opens the doors to all the opportunities that make life rich, fulfilling and complete. Reading brings knowledge as well as entertainment. And in the city, we are privileged to have fabulous local libraries and access to books constantly, where others across Australia don’t.In 2014, I ran my first half-marathon and the All Stars raised over $10,000 that went to books and literacy projects. The 2015 7SCM gives me another opportunity to not only raise more awareness and cash, but also to beat last years’ time while spending an amazing weekend with my closest friends in a stunning location. "

Lou Panuel (Brisbane) Principal Community Engagement Officer

“The reason I am participating in the half marathon, is to have fun with my friends while raising funds for a good cause. My personal goal is to beat my time from the 2014 half marathon and I also hope our team will inspire others to take up an opportunity to improve their health and wellbeing. Participating in this annual event also keeps me accountable to keep up my fitness and running.”

Jasmyn Sheppard (Brisbane) Interior Designer

“This is the third year I've run the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon as an All Star team member. It's always a great weekend catching up with everyone as we're mostly interstate friends and don't get to see each other regularly. There are always lots of laughs – pre, and especially, post-race!

Being a part of the All Stars team is such a positive and motivating influence for me to live a healthy lifestyle and work hard training.

Team All Stars Run for Reading

Take a group of women who know the value of good health and the importance of literacy for all, add in one of the most unique running festivals in Australia, the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon, and what do you have? Team All Stars and their ‘Run for Reading’.

Thanks for having us again Sunshine Coast Marathon. Your hard working team always delivers such a professional race event in such a pristine part of our beautiful land.”

Amanda Hayman (Brisbane) Digital Program Officer, SLQLD

“In my daily life, I frequently engage with Indigenous community through digital technology. I see young people spending a lot of time on social media and playing computer games and I want to be a role model that demonstrates an active and healthy lifestyle balance.

I was privileged to grow up with books around me. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation provides books to those who don’t have that privilege, as well as many other great initiates. I believe literacy can save lives; it’s not only an important life skill that leads to career pathways but also builds self-confidence and is a great outlet for self-expression.

The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon is a great opportunity for personal growth and team camaraderie while raising money for a great cause. It is really special being a part of this group of women."

Nadine McDonald-Dowd (Brisbane) Manager, kuril dhagun, State Library of QLD

“Completing the 10 km fun run will be a satisfying achievement for me this year. For the past year, I have been unable to walk at times due to a bad spine but having committed to therapy, rehab and Pilates I am strong enough to get back to doing what I love… walking, running, enjoying the sisterhood of great women and raising funds for our kids future.”

Kylie Wallbridge (Seoul, Korea) Managing Director

“The event in 2014 was my first half marathon - barely four months earlier I'd never run more than 5km, and I'm now hooked!

I run for the amazing feeling of satisfaction it gives me (post run!!), the time it allows me to think and reflect, and how it reminds me to be grateful for my health. At the same time, the opportunity to raise funds for the ILF makes it so much more worthwhile. Reading is something many of us take for granted, but can change a child's life.”

Banjo O'Brien was born 16 weeks prematurely weighing only 662gms and spent 150 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit fighting to survive. He is now 4 years old and has severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

He also has a magical smile, an inspiring, determined family and a league of supporters who want to see him achieve his every potential in life. And with that winning combination, 'See Banjo Run' was born.

Banjo's mum, Diana, is the driving force behind 'See Banjo Run". It is her passion and positive outlook

Standing together to 'See Banjo Run'

combined with the encouragement and support of 'The Board Meeting', a local Surf Charity, that makes things happen.

A graphic designer by trade, this remarkable mother set to and

designed leaflets to place in Sunshine Coast businesses and cafes raising awareness for extensive fundraising initiatives that she drives for her son.The aim of which is to raise the $34,000 needed to undertake Stem Cell Therapy and give Banjo the best possible chance of reaching the milestones many of us

take for granted in our children's lives. "We are very hopeful that following treatment, we will see many gains including better head control and core strength which ultimately will help with communication and talking which would be a dream come true." said Diana.

It was one of these leaflets that sparked the creation of Team 'See Banjo Run' at the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon. That team is now the top fund-raiser of the 2015 event and a perfect example of what the event was created to do - provide a fun, healthy vehicle for the community to fundraise for causes they are passionate about.

Rockers for Knockers, the largest team in the history of the event with over 250 members, was initiated by Sunshine Coast mum of three, Ruth D'Hennin, who at 49 discovered a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer. The early detection made a huge difference in Ruth's treatment with the lump removed immediately and her chemo treatment underway. She's lost all her hair but none of her energy, passion and determination. Ruth is passionate about health, fitness and fun.

Without a history of sporting prowress, in the past two years she has taken up triathlons - completing not only sprint and Olympic triathlons.

Fabulous Flo FightersPlease give a huge cheer when you see Donella Taylor and her team 'Fabulous Flo Fighters' on race day.

Donella's Mum 'Fabulous Flo' passed away on July 4th after a very brave fight against cancer. Her daughter and a team of over 20 friends will be running in her honour, and to raise awareness & funds for the palliative care nurses at Cittamani Hospice Services who helped Donella care for her Mum at home.

Flo was an avid fan of a high five, so please join in this celebration of her life and high five this team when they go past.

Ruth's Rockers for Knockers embody all that the event is about - playing an active part in supporting our community.

Ruth is the first to admit she is not the fastest or strongest but she's without doubt the happiest and most determined athlete around. This year her goal is to celebrate the end of her treatment and her 50th by running 10km at the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon on August 30 with 250 + of her friends. The aim is to raise awareness of early breast cancer detection and funds for the Cindy MacKenzie Breast Cancer Foundation. Funds will be raised via the Crick Eastham Foundation and passed directly to the CMBCF to help support Sunshine Coast men and women dealing with breast cancer.

Crick's CEO, John Eastham who met Ruth through training ,will also run every step of the way alongside her.

From strength to strength - Events on the Sunshine Coast

IF passion was a currency Sunshine Coast Councillor Jason Opray would be rolling in it. In the past few years several major sporting and cultural events have arrived in his backyard and not by accident.

“Make no mistake the Sunshine Coast will become the events capital of regional Australia,” Cr Opray says.

“It’s critical for our local economy, in particular our small businesses and jobs for our kids.”

The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon has injected more than $100 million to the Sunshine Coast region since it began 3 years ago, and has given 500,00 back to local communities and charity groups.

With the Australian Surf Life Saving titles, the World Championships for outrigging and Half Ironman triathlon booked to be held on the Sunshine Coast in 2016, the region is exploding on to the events scene.

“We have a natural stadium, that’s why we attract these events,” Cr Opray says.

“It’s something we do incredibly well and that we’re good at. We have a reputation across the country and around the world for hosting and running world class events such as the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon.

“The community at large is a healthy active happy group of people.”

It’s estimated as many as 40% of tourists travel to Queensland specifically for an event and it’s the biggest singular segment of the tourism industry.

Managing Plantar Fasciitis It’s a runner’s worst nightmare, that painful overuse injury striking just weeks out from a major event. The constant pounding of the pavement can lead to one of the sport’s most common complaints; a sharp stabbing pain either in the heel or arch of the foot.

Oddly enough it’s a pain that sometimes gets worse when you stop and eases once warmed up. Sound familiar? Innovation Podiatry owner Vanessa Ng said it was peak season for “plantar fasciitis” as the winter running season reached its busiest period. “Sometimes it can be caused by overtraining, not wearing the right shoes, or overstriding,” Vanessa says. “It feels like a stone bruise and can be sharp and painful with every step.” Vanessa, whose team of qualified podiatrists will be on hand before and after the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon to help competitors manage their lower limb concerns, said strapping, calf stretches, a change in footwear and ice can help alleviate plantar fasciitis symptoms.

“Tight calves are one of the biggest causes as it winds up tension into your foot,” she said.“Stretching can calm the pain in your foot and athletes should always ice immediately after and wearing a compression sock also helps reduce the soft tissue stresses.”

Vanessa says runners need to be aware of any pain that starts on impact or from weight bearing exercises. She says if ignored the injury can continue on for years but seeking professional help within the first month of symptoms occurring can mean only a few weeks of discomfort compared to years of discomfort.

“Any kind of persistent pain should be looked at by a professional. We won’t always recommend rest as sometimes that can make it worse but in severe cases rest is sometimes the only treatment option. After diagnosis athletes may only have to reduce the intensity of their training. “It may be a case of having your technique analysed, a different type of footwear and management.”

Did you know more than 500 volunteers will be helping out at this year’s 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon?

VOLUNTEERS

T , who volunteer their time for the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon are essential to its success. Whether its a few words of encouragement from a stranger or a much-needed cup of water, the volunteers can be the difference between a good event and a great one.

For the third year Ray White has sponsored the volunteers, helping get more than 500 people kitted out and ready to assist with the setup, delivery and pack up of the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon.

Ray White general manager Jo Madden said it was their choice of event to be involved with about 30 staff volunteering and another 25 taking to the streets to run and walk.

“It’s such a good event for the community not only to raise much needed money for charities but to promote health and fitness. We love being involved in an event that encourages anyone of any ability to get in and have a go,” she says.

“It’s a good feeling among our offices to get everyone on board and make them feel part of it. This is where our businesses are so it’s about giving back and getting involved in the community.”

In return for helping out volunteers receive a Ray White Volunteer’s shirt and a monetary donation that goes back into the Sunshine Coast’s community groups.

Please show your appreciation on course if you receive care, attention and encouragement from a willing volunteer. They want

you to succeed just as much as you do.
