Admission rates to the most

selective schools are in the

single digits. Standing out,

getting noticed, keeping the file

in play—these things matter, so

how do you make it happen?

The file. That’s another word for

your child. And he or she is

preparing to take a big step,

perhaps the biggest one so far.

Yet would it be reasonable to

ask a wrestler to compete in a

tournament without any

wrestling experience? A student

to perform in a play without a

single rehearsal? What about

asking a student to write a

critical essay without having

previously taught him or her the

mechanics?

Of course not, right? But when

it comes to college essays, this

is exactly what is being asked

of our high-school students

every single day. Does your

teenager have the necessary

experience to write a page

suitable for his or her memoir, a

potentially life-altering page that

also walks the fine line between

humility and pride?

During the college-application

season, the very time students

need to allow their best selves

to shine through, their inner

critics may be whispering,

you’re not going to get in!

At Compass-U, we work to give

each student the skills to

express his or her authentic

voice—and stand out in that

sea.

.One-on-one coaching to support the daunting college essay process.

Timing: 10–12 sessions (6 formal) + written critiques, revision suggestions, & support. Summer sessions run 2–3 weeks for Parts 1 and 2. Session Format: Online or in person Part 1, Kick-Off: We start by assessing the student’s learning style. Creative and manageable assignments, ranging from ½ to 1½ hour(s) per day, are provided via email. These are specifically tailored to

the individual and help unleash the creative self, thereby allowing a student begin to see the world through the lens of a writer.

Part 2, Intensive: Five 1-on-1 sessions. Summer session classes run approximately 2 weeks. During this time, the student will learn mechanics, format, and pacing; recognize common pitfalls; and, of course, receive encouragement and constructive feedback on his or her essay(s); a panel of counseling and publishing professionals will review each piece.

For optimum results, a student should dedicate 2–3 hours/day to Compass-U-related materials during this time.

Upon Completion: Once a student has successfully completed Parts 1 and 2, he or she will have a resume

and a working Common Application as well as his or her main common application essay, short response, talking points, and at least one school- specific supplemental essay.

Part 3, Ongoing Support: Sign up for the 1-on-1 Package prior to August 1, 2014, and receive 3 additional critique rounds (online) at no additional charge.
