The following have been identified as featured species for Chain Lakes Management Area: black bear, gray jay, pileated woodpecker, Northern goshawk, red crossbill. Sections 4-6 & 9, T44N R26W, Marquette County Surface sediments consist of medium- and coarse-textured and and peat and muck. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness (<200 feet). The Cambrian Munising Formation and likely Archean granite and gneiss subcrop below the glacial drift. Sand/gravel pits are not located in the area but there may be potential on the uplands. Abandoned iron mines are located roughly five miles to the northeast. There is no known history of metallic mineral leasing or exploration in the vicinity of the compartment. There has been no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Planning will focus on integrated timber management, forest recreation, fisheries management, and wildlife habitat management. Increasing public access to state lands is a high priority. Forest road monitoring/maintenance, trespass issues, forest regeneration, forest health, forest fire control, BMPs associated with watershed issues, and any resource damage incidents are all critical assessments considered during the forest cover type mapping, forest stand exams/inventory, collaborative development of proposed forest treatments, public comment documentation, and sustainable forest management planning processes.

Many drainages and wetlands throughout compartment. Some pockets of upland soils that are accessible for forest treatments.

Part of a very large contiguous block of state ownership. Very few private inholdings within compartment or surrounding area.

Chandler Brook is a designated trout stream which passes through Sections 4 and 5.Poplar Creek passes through Section 6.

Compartment 54 is found within the Chain Lakes Moraine Management Area; on a Disintegration Moraine in Southwestern Marquette County. The dominant Natural Communities are dry mesic northern forests, poor conifer swamps, and mesic northern forests. This management area offers opportunities to increase diversity and perhaps long-term oak sustainability through under planting white and red pine. Another priority is to maintain or increase wildlife corridors especially along riparian corridors. Wildlife management issues in the management area are: mast (hard and soft); habitat fragmentation; mature forest conditions; mesic conifer; course woody debris; and retention or development of large living and dead standing trees (for cavities). This management area represents approximately ¼ of the oak resource on WUP state forest. The following have been identified as featured species for Chain Lakes Management Area: black bear, gray jay, pileated woodpecker, Northern goshawk, red crossbill.

    Additional Compartment Information:

The north portion of Section 6 is accessed by Section 32 Road. The east portion of section 4 is accessed by Miller Creek Road. The SW 1/4 of Section 4 is accessed via Camp 10 Road. The center portion of the compartment is inaccessible due to large lowlands, lack of roads, and private property.

    None at this time.

Miller Creek Road is a state snowmobile trail, south of this Compartment. Hunting, trapping, fishing, berry picking, ORV use, and snowmobile use are all important recreational uses.

Lies within the Gwinn Management Unit area of fire protection. Wildfire risk is relatively low in this compartment.

The following reports from the Inventory are attached:

    Harvest Group Selection

Supplementing natural regeneration of white pine with handplanting of white pine at a rate of 50 seedlings per acre may need to be considered if natural regeneration success is not stimulated.

Remove defective, poorly spaced, high risk, or desirable white pine and red pine to result in an overstory made up of a patchwork of various stocking levels/crown closures. Retain some white pine with wildlife value characteristics. Remove all red maple, spruce, and fir. Varying gap sizes and intensity of substrate disturbance from logging equipment will allow for wider range of seed bed conditions which will be conducive for the establishment and recruitment of white pine seedlings. Follow work instructions by leaving Legacy trees.

Hunter Walking Trail should be graded once sale completed. Road would be available to plant to herbaceous cover. Berms shall be re-constructed after harvest.

Harvest all aspen, balsam poplar, maple, cherry, fir, and spruce. Leave any white pine, red pine, hemlock, elm, birch, cedar, and oak. Use patch retention, perhaps around the wildlife opening, purer patches of maple, or any vernal ponds located. Retain some bigtooth aspen for cavity nesters and goshawk nests. Leave some mature patches in stand.

Bob Heyd has indicated that this stand is highly infected with Diplodia, and should not be considered for red pine management at this time. The existing overstory red pine is already adversely impacted and not numerous enough to warrant a harvest. Understory red pine are also being impacted by Diplodia.

A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210.

    Cold Water Stream

    SCA

A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity.

to burn. At the compartment review it was decided that the stand should be scheduled for a prescribed burn, with a possibility of

underplanting if burning did not work. Heavily stocked understory with desirable advanced regeneration. Scattered
