GROWING AND DIVERSIFYING

Cayman Enterprise City is a growing venture that is future-focused. This special economic zone is designed to pro-mote a free-market business environment through thecreation of knowledge-based industries for commerceand education.

Special economic zones have consistently boostedlocal economies around the world through direct foreigninvestment as well as by creating highly skilled jobs with-in the zone and generating work outside the zone in suchsupport sectors as construction, professional services, and supply services.

Cayman Enterprise City estimates it has had an eco-nomic impact of $12.6 million since its inception in

February 2012. It anticipates future investment in the con-struction and development of its main campus alone willbe $317.3 million over the next 10 to 15 years. The com-plex will be made up of six campuses, representing thelargest information and communications technology clus-ter in the Caribbean region. It is also positioned as astrategic base for companies targeting emerging markets.

There are now more than 90 companies signed upwith CEC, with more than 200 in its sales pipeline.

Caribbean Utilities Company, CUC, is also planning forthe future by looking into the development of alternativeenergy. It recently entered into agreements with tworenewable energy developers to provide 13 MW of renew-able energy capacity on the CUC grid using solar panelsand wind turbines. The project is expected to be com-pleted by early 2015.

Consolidated Water is continuing to expand opera-tions, with its most recent desalination plant in Bali,Indonesia. It is currently pursuing a mega desalinationplant in Baja California, Mexico. The company, whichmarked its 40-year anniversary last year, now operates 15plants in five countries.

Another positive came earlier this year when ratingagency Moody’s maintained the credit rating of theCayman Islands with a stable outlook.

In its latest ratings report, Moody’s listed Cayman asretaining an Aa3, which indicates a very low credit risk –a positive sign that will encourage investors to have thehighest confidence in Cayman’s future.

With forward-thinking companies diversifying andinvigorating the economy, the road ahead appears to bea promising path for the Cayman Islands. R

CONTEMPORARY, ORGANIC AND DISTINCT. Those are among the defining elements of the innovative interiordesign at The WaterColours, Grand Cayman’s exciting new condo-minium development on world-famous Seven Mile Beach.

International Design Group, Cayman’s leading interior designhouse, worked exclusively with the development team behind thisexemplary beachfront property, the conception for which was to cre-ate an unparalleled ambience with timeless design and sophisticatedstyle that resonates with contemporary beachfront living.

Rich woods, granite, marble and stone are incorporated through-out with elements of the ocean ever-present, including intricate coralpieces with soft sand and cream tones, contributing to the tranquil, secluded atmosphere. The complimentary color palette is inspired bythe natural surroundings - white sands, contrasting azure blue watersand suntanned tones of the beach. Space and light are key elementsin all of the living spaces, while other Elements like texture have beenincorporated with natural stone finishes, metals and organic materi-als to add dimension and interest. Elegant yet sculptural light fixturesallow for soft illuminations and a warm, inviting ambience within allof the common areas.

Every effort has been made through the interior design to ensureresidents are “living the vision” and IDG's award winning team havecarefully crafted an environment that invokes the intended vision bycontrasting the strong, clean architectural lines with organic curvesfor a sense of balanced flow. The goal was to blend traditional ele-ments with innovative, contemporary design to create a “current, yettimeless space”. Specific interior finishes, furnishings, art work andoriginal designs were thoughtfully chosen so together they wouldachieve the goal of integrating intimate living spaces with more gen-erous social gathering places, seamlessly drawing the 60-unit beach-front condominium complex together.

Architectural design features like the cutting edge pool have beencomplimented by suitably dynamic ultra chic day beds and upside-down umbrellas. Original designs as well are found throughout thedevelopment such as a large coral feature wall created from mosaictile in the lobby.

This project has been a triumph of original design, comple-menting the beauty of both the sea and the sand – while never tak-ing away from the spectacular views.

Dart Realty enters 2014 with three major develop-ment projects at different stages of construction. They have varied histories, are in different areas

of Grand Cayman and will serve diverse markets whencomplete. Yet these building projects are unified by acore value identified by the Dart family as a cornerstoneof all Dart businesses worldwide: innovation. Each of theprojects will add something distinctly different toCayman’s economy, enriching the experiences of thepeople who use them, in these cases: boaters, businessprofessionals and beach lovers.

NEAR COMPLETION:

CAYMAN ISLANDS YACHT CLUB

The Yacht Club and its surrounding facilities, whichprovide the Seven Mile Beach area with a gateway tothe North Sound, were badly damaged in Hurricane Ivanand not fully rebuilt. Years later there were still a fewsubmerged boats in the harbour. In 2011 Dart Realtypurchased The Yacht Club and began significantrefurbishment of the marina and surrounding areas.Work included cleaning out the debris, entirely removingthe old, damaged docks and installing new state-of-the-art walkways, docks and anchorage systems as well ascomprehensive landside improvements.

The renovation marks a new era for boating in theCayman Islands, showcasing Dart’s principles ofthoughtful sustainable development in a marina envi-ronment. The Yacht Club now boasts a Poralu Marinedock system, a network of floating pontoons from thename synonymous with the world’s highest environ-mental and design standards in marine infrastructure. These extraordinarily stable docks are anchored bySeaflex moorings, a self-regulating elastic systemdesigned to have minimal environmental impact on theseabed. The docks and moorings were installed by localcontractor Mac Iron Marine and will provide generationsof boat owners and visitors with a more pleasant marinaexperience.

Every convenience was considered for the Yacht Clubberths which can accommodate up to 158 vessels from30 to 80 feet with a draft of 4.5 feet. Each slip is equippedwith individual power, water and pump-out systems. Thedock used by commercial dive boats also features a whippanel where operators can simply hook up their com-pressor at the central panel and use the whips threadedunderneath the docking system to refill the tanks on theirboats. Each of the four docks will have entry by key-card,

lending additional protection to the Yacht Club’s 24-hoursecurity and property management services.

As the primary gateway to the North Sound, therefurbished Yacht Club is designed to give the 700owners, operators and guests who pass through eachday a marina experience befitting the natural beauty andecological richness that make Cayman a boater’sparadise. Landside amenities will include high-speedwireless Internet, an enhanced fuel depot and a conveniencestore and chandlery with essentials from fishing equipmentto squid to navigation tools. There is ample car and busparking, paved walkways and lush landscaping, featuringnative plants and trees from the Dart Realty Nursery.

COMING UP QUICKLY:

18 FORUM LANE IN CAMANA BAY

Since Camana Bay opened its first buildings in 2007,corporate demand for office space within the TownCentre has exceeded expectations. The market hasreacted with enthusiasm to the mixed-use Town whichintegrates global business with a real sense of Caribbeancommunity. Existing office space is nearly 95% leased.

Owing to this demand and confidence in Cayman’sbusiness growth, Dart Realty chose to commenceconstruction on the next address in Camana Bay’scommercial office portfolio without an anchor tenant inplace. Shortly after the property was announced, a firmsigned for nearly 20,000 square feet. 18 Forum Lane isscheduled for completion in February 2015 and will adda total of 85,000 square feet of office and retail to theTown Centre. The building includes ground floor retailspace and offices on three upper levels.

18 Forum Lane is designed to be an integral part ofthe Town Centre while paying homage to traditionalCayman building craft. One notable design feature willbe metal cladding fabricated to resemble the distinctivecorrugated zinc roofs that cover traditional Caymancottages. Another hallmark is a central courtyard conceivedas an outdoor room with ample shade by day and artfullighting at night, continuing Camana Bay’s commitmentto open, public spaces.

Designed to achieve a series of unprecedented con-struction milestones, 18 Forum Lane will be Cayman’s firstLEED certified mixed-use commercial building, advancing Camana Bay’s long-term focus on sustain-ability. From the island’s largest photovoltaic system toprovide tenants with significant energy savings to ‘plugand play’ spaces to help facilitate turnkey fitouts, businesses of varying sizes can take advantage of theenergy-efficient, flexible space. 18 Forum Lane is the idealaddress for forward-thinking companies that are fuellingCayman’s economy.

COMMENCING CONSTRUCTION:

KIMPTON HOTEL PROJECT

Only a few months into construction of the 265-roomKimpton hotel, it is apparent that the brand’s firstCaribbean resort won’t follow the traditional Seven MileBeach development formula. Just a look at the raft slabfoundation, completed in a series of the largest foundationpours in the history of the Cayman Islands, shows aresort footprint that defies convention. The westernmosttip of the building is set 235 feet back from the high watermark; many Seven Mile Beach properties are set backonly 50 feet. With a perpendicular orientation to thebeach, most of the resort is situated more than 400 feetback with the neighboring condominium building setback almost 500 feet.

The unusual site orientation is the result of a seriesof design inspirations and initiatives posed by Ken Dart. His vision is to ensure that the Kimpton hotel delivers aguest experience unlike any other on Seven Mile Beach, with the same level of Caymanian hospitality that inspiredhim and his family to return after their first visit more than25 years ago.

Underground parking and back of house operationswill elevate the hotel entrance to 24 feet above sea level.Guests will enter the resort grounds along a gently

sloping, meandering drive canopied by native palmtrees. They’ll approach the hotel entrance and immedi-ately be presented with a majestic view of Seven MileBeach and the Caribbean Sea. Every guest room andcondominium will feature sweeping water views.

The resort’s Seven Mile Beach experience will extendfar beyond lounge chairs on the sand. Open green spacesare designed to take full advantage of the generous siteand feature public biking and walking paths that traversethe ocean side of the property. Guests will walk out of theresort on to a gently cascading pool deck surrounded byocean view event lawns and hidden pocket gardens.

Of course before this vision is realized, there will beyears of construction that will produce more than 400 localjobs. The resort is designed for LEED certification and willincorporate the latest sustainable technologies along withinnovative construction practices. The foundation is laidand the footprint is marked; now the impact on theeconomy can truly be realised. R

When we purchased the Compass through ourcompany Pinnacle Media, our goal was to pub-lish a newspaper that ranks favorably with the

finest news outlets in the world. That continues to be our mis-sion, and we are making significant strides in that direction.

To meet our stan-dards and expecta-tions, the Compassmust do several thingsextremely well:

First, and mostimportantly, our newspages must reflect thecommunity we serve. The Cayman Islandscomprise a uniquecountry, an amalgamof the rich culture andtraditions, existingside-by-side withmodern internationalfinancial, tourism, andsoon-to-be medical industries.

Our challenge is to produce a newspaper thataddresses the interest of our diverse community. In truth, modern-day newspapers must offerdiverse coverage of stories to their diverse com-munity of readers, and nowhere is that more truethan in Cayman where nearly half of our popula-tion consists of expatriates from more than 100countries.

Some readers turn first to sports, others to businessstories, and still others to international news (What’s goingon in Jamaica or the Philippines?) Our reporters mustinform us about actions in the Legislative Assembly, pro-ceedings in the courts building, and yes, what’s playingat the local cinema. (A previous governor advised(warned?) us not to tinker with our comics page.)

Changes at the Compass are taking place both exter-nally (what you see and read) and internally (the reorgan-ization of our business structures). If you visit our officesat the Compass Centre, you’ll walk into a completelyreappointed modern reception area. For our staff, we’verefurbished the offices in many departments and evenadded a new dining room. We are investing heavily inupgrading internal systems, including our IT infrastructure, and soon we will be providing a much-improved onlineexperience for our readers.

Readers may notice we recently upgraded the quali-ty of paper we print on, enabling better reproduction ofour photographs, articles, and advertisements.

We have hired (and are still hiring) a number of neweditors and reporters to improve and expand our daily

content. We are payingspecial attention to ourproofreading (and stillcringe when we fall short).

For news outside ourborders, we have pur-chased the WashingtonPost News Service, giving

us access to every word The Post publishes, includingeconomic, sports, entertainment, and international news.Photos, too. (The Post syndicate complements our con-tinued Associated Press access.)

Having learned his trade at fine journalism establish-ments (The St. Petersburg Times, The Washington Post, and Newsweek Magazine), David Legge, who serves asEditor in Chief, still believes in strong boundaries betweenthe Compass’s “news coverage” and its “editorial opin-ions,” which appear daily on the Editorial Page (usuallyPage 4).

Previously, Compass editorials were written by news-room reporters. We found this co-mingling of objectivity(which all reporters must abide by) and subjectivity (per-sonal opinions) to be unwise and conflicting.

Therefore, shortly after purchasing the newspaper, weset up a completely independent Editorial Department, run

The Direction of The Compass

by an Editorial Board, which each day promul-gates the “voice” of thenewspaper. Think of thisdepartment as the “thinktank” of the Compass.

We are adding staff tothis department, which alsooversees opinion piecessuch as columns andLetters to the Editor. A short word about each:

We have added a number of syndicated columnistswhom we consider to be among the best and brightestthinkers and writers in the world. These include GeorgeF. Will and Charles Krauthammer, both Pulitzer Prize win-ners, and Dr. Richard Rahn, a world-renowned economistwho formerly served as a director of the Cayman IslandsMonetary Authority. We are currently seeking one or twolocal columnists to complement our international offerings.

Readers may also notice that we are taking strong edi-torial positions on issues of significant concern to thecommunity. We are committed not just to “ad hoc edito-rials” but to sustained “editorial campaigns” on founda-tional issues such as conservation, waste management, education, and fiscal responsibility.

Our editorial voice is independent with no partisanpreference for any political party. We will continue to advo-cate strongly for clean transparent government that pro-vides essential services effectively and efficiently.

Through out “letters” forum, we welcome differing oropposing views, but we have eliminated all “anonymous”communications. We believe there is a close link betweenanonymity and irresponsibility that should not be encour-aged by our (or any other) media company.

Finally, we accept – in fact, embrace – our responsi-bility as publishers of Cayman’s most venerable newssource. Our news reporting will always be probing – butfair and objective – and our editorial voice will always beprovocative – but well-informed and responsible. R

Over the past 45-plus years, Caribbean UtilitiesCompany, Ltd. (CUC) has led the development ofGrand Cayman by providing world-class elec-

tricity service through continuous investment in infra-structure, technology and people. Looking to the future, the cost and environmental impact of fossil fuels will con-tinue to drive the development of alternative energysources and consumer energy efficiency.

CUC has entered into agreements with two renewableenergy developers to provide 13 MW of renewable ener-gy capacity on the CUC grid utilizing solar panels andwind turbines. The projects are expected to be complet-ed by early 2015. CUC also has a very successfulCustomer Owned Renewable Energy (CORE) programmethat allows customers to interconnect and combine theeco-friendliness of their small renewable generators withthe reliability of CUC’s grid.

In the areas of efficiency and technology CUC hasembarked on an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)project which will see all customer meters upgraded to

‘Smart’ meters that willreport real-time con-sumption data andenable customers toadjust their consump-tion patterns to becomemore energy efficient.CUC will also becomemore efficient in meterreading, connection anddisconnection of powerand identification ofenergy losses or powerquality issues.
