Modern or classic: numerous Slovakian spas provide relaxationand wellness.

Baroque beauty in Banská Bystrica

And anyone wanting to pursue their favorite sportcan play golf, go fishing, hunt or ride. In the win-ter, the snowy slopes of the Slovakian ski resortsexert their stark appeal and are the dream of allwinter sports fans.

Banská Bystrica – a modern metropolisin the middle of Slovakia

The old mining town of Banská Bystrica, a townblessed with many valuable art-historical monu-ments, can be found in the picturesque valley ofthe river Hron. The Celts already mined surfaceores here and as of the 13th century, gold and sil-ver and later copper, mercury and lead were alsomined. As a result of these mineral resources, thetown was one of the three richest mining towns inmid-Slovakia at the beginning of the 15th cen-tury. In the latter part of the eighteenth century,Banská Bystrica was given a new baroque faceafter a major fire decimated the town in 1761.Many historical buildings of various architecturalstyles were restored and give the modern-dayuniversity town its special charm. With almost100,000 inhabitants, Banská Bystrica is the admin-istrative, cultural and economic center of centralSlovakia. In addition, its location at the foot of theLower Tatras, Greater Fatra and the Slovak OreMountains makes it a powerful tourist magnet.

In the Heart of Europe – Slovakia

Nestling at the heart of Europe you will find theyoung state of Slovakia, a geographic region thatwas a meeting point for Slavic, German, Austrianand Hungarian cultures for many centuries. Theindependent Slovak Republic, a small countrywith a population of nearly 5.5 million, was found-ed in 1993 as a result of the “velvet divorce” ofCzechoslovakia. The state borders on Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine and Hun-gary. On March 29, 2004 Slovakia joined NATOand on May 1, 2004 became a member of theEuropean Union. The history of the country canbe traced back to the 5th century A.D., at whichtime the region covered by Slovakia was popu-lated by Slavs, the people who gave the countryits modern-day name: Slovák.

Economic change

While the emphasis of industrial developmenthad been on the energy and raw-material-inten-sive sectors (metallurgical, armaments, energyand chemical industries) since the 1950s, heavyindustry came to an almost complete standstill in1989 due to the upheavals in eastern Europe. Bycontrast, the foundation of small private enter-prises enabled the service sector to double itsshare from 33 % in 1991 to 67.2 % in 2005.Alarge proportion of industrial production is stillaccounted for by machine and vehicle con-struction. Foreign investors, especially in theautomotive field, are supporting Slovakia in itsambitious pursuit to become one of the biggestvehicle producing nations in the world in about10 years. According to preliminary statistics, Germany wasSlovakia’s main foreign trade partner in the year2005. Means of transportation and especiallyvehicles belong to Slovakia’s key export items toGermany. With EUR 2.4 billion, Germany thustakes second place among foreign investors.

Royal towns, outstanding cultural heri-tage sites and fascinating countryside

The four Slovak royal towns of Kezmarok, StaráLubovna, Bardejov and Levoca intend to carryforward the glory and wealth of their commonhistory. Their designation stems from the time of

the middle ages when they were awarded thestatus of “free royal towns” by the King. Thesefour towns offer visitors countless cultural treas-ures, be it the oldest gothic altar in the world inLevoca or the castle in Stará Lubovna, whichused to house the Polish crown jewels. And thenostalgic and romantic atmosphere of the alleysof Kezmarok is turned into an unforgettableexperience by the breathtaking view of the mountain ridges of the High Tatras. A large number of historical buildings fromvarious ages has been preserved in varying states of repair within the territory of today’s Slovak Republic. These include numerous castles, palaces and forts. One of the most out-standing monuments is certainly Spis Castle, which was declared a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO. Nature lovers will also find Slovakia has plenty tooffer, though. The Tatra region, split into the High Tatras and Lower Tatras national parks, hasalways been very popular. Measuring almost 80kilometers (50 miles) in length and 17 kilometers(10.5 miles) in breadth, this region forms a part ofthe Carpathian Mountains, the second largestmountain range on the European continent afterthe Alps. The 4,000 caves that Slovakia has tooffer are also very impressive – four of whichcount as UNESCO world cultural heritage sites. One of these caves, the Dob‰inská ºadová jaskyÀa ice cave, was the first cave in Europe tobe illuminated and has been open to the publicsince 1872.The great cultural, historical and natural varietythat Slovakia’s 49,030 square kilometers (18,935square miles) have to offer makes the country afascinating tourist destination. The sub-continen-tal climate enables a wealth of leisure pursuitsduring all four seasons. Renowned spas withmedicinal springs are ideal places to relax and bepampered while enjoying one of the classic- ormodern-style wellness offers. Hikers, scubadivers and adventurers can have fun exploringthe fascinating mountainous terrain with its deep,crystal-clear mountain lakes and bizarre caves.

You can find further information about Slovakia and Banská Bystrica at: www.slovakiatourism.sk www.bbb.sk

An outstanding monument. Spis Castle is a UNESCO worldcultural heritage site.

This was a completely new and very special chal-lenge for the engineers at Rotzler, the task beingto equip Renault Kerax 420.34, 6 x 6, vehicleswith TREIBMATIC TR 200/5 (pulling force 200 kN)recovery winches. The technical difficulty of thetask lay in mounting the winch to face the front(left). To begin with, it seemed as if the construc-tion engineers faced a seemingly impossible taskdue to the acting axle loads during possibledownward diagonal pulls at angles of up to 25°.Yet they still found a way to do it! Thanks tokeeping the rope exit as low as possible inconnection with a limited maximum downwarddeflection angle it was possible to reduce axelloads to an acceptable level. This solution wasalso approved by Renault following intensive dis-cussions. That meant the first hurdle had beencleared, but the limited space in the chassis stillposed two other tricky technical problems: theTREIBMATIC winch still had to be housed and a

rope-guidance system had to be devised for the 24-mm wire rope. The winch, along with theseparate storage drum (diameter: 700 mm), wasneatly slotted in behind the driving cab to savespace and using complex 3D models and FEMcalculations, the optimum frame structure andattachment points were determined. In doing thisit was important to leave enough room to mountthe firefighting equipment. To guide the rope tothe front in as straight and direct a manner aspossible, it was necessary to move a cross-mem-ber of the loading crane structure. Apart fromthat, it was necessary to mount the TREIBMATICTR 200/5 at a slight downward angle to the front,an arrangement that needed only one deflectionroll. This was designed and dimensioned to suitthe application, as a result of which a high degreeof efficiency was attained. This projectmarks the first time

that Rotzler has succeeded in integrating aTREIBMATIC TR 200/5 into the bodywork andnot, as is usually the case, in the chassis of avehicle. The company ESEA SK from BanskáBystrica had an opportunity to inspect the suc-cess of this engineering and mounting solutionon site in Steinen when the customer came totake over the prototype. Several winch systemsincluding specially manufactured rope-guidanceelements for this special mount were subse-quently delivered in Slovakia where the fullyequipped vehicles are now serving the state firebrigades in Trencin, Martin, Rimavska Sobotaand Kosice.

A special TREIBMATIC/6model that will also include this additional function is planned for military applications aswell.

New digital control as of November 2006

As a standard feature, the TREIBMATIC winch isfitted with a digital electronic control logic thatpermits sensitive load regulation. To guaranteethe greatest possible degree of operator safetyand convenience, Rotzler continually brought thisfeature in line with the latest technical standards. As of November this year, the /6 version of thisdigital control will be available and replace theprevious /5 version.

This further development again documents thegreat importance Rotzler attaches to making lifeeasier for winch operators and supporting themin the field with intelligent systems.

The recovery winches of the ROTZLER TREIBMATIC product group have been ensuringthe highest safety standards in numerous different applications for over 13 years. Forvehicle recovery and self-recovery operations, the TREIBMATIC name stands for safe operation, the utmost in reliability, long rope service life, low weight and compact, space-saving design. The global success of the TREIBMATIC range ofwinches rests on these clear user benefits.

The new TREIBMATIC/6 has now been equippedwith the latest digital control version as well as anew control unit with additional functionality.

Handy control unit for simple winchoperation

Every winch operation depends on the safe andsimple control of the winch. These are situationsin which everything needs to work first time, and this is something users can be sure of thanks to the new control unit of the ROTZLERTREIBMATIC/6 winch. An illuminated LCD display shows all operational states in a clearlyordered manner and the user-menu prompts arenaturally multi-lingual. As a future-orientedcompany, Rotzler is aware of the fact that theinnovative power of our economy rests on theprovision of vocational training and qualificationoptions in skilled trades for young people. This isalso connected with sustaining competitivenessin global markets. The new intake of job starterswill be training to become industrial mechanicsfor machine and industrial technology andmechatronics technicians. However, Rotzler alsogives students of the University of CooperativeEducation Loerrach (Berufsakademie Lörrach) anopportunity to complete their practical training, for example in the subject of mechanicalengineering (Bachelor of Engineering). Rotzlerattaches a lot of importance to the provision ofcomprehensive and intensive tuition in skills and

techniques. Motivated professional trainers in thetraining workshop and company departmentsmake sure of this. But fostering social competenceis equally important within a positive companyatmosphere in which learning and working are fun. As a result, Rotzler trainees regularly achieveabove-average grades in their final exams.
