Learn more about Tai Chi and Qigong Did you know Tai Chi classes are offered FREE to seniors at Rendezvous Pointe? Do you know what Tai Chi is? While Tai Chi is actually a soft style of the martial arts, what you practice in class hardly resembles Bruce Lee. Tai Chi is a martial art that utilizes the practice of Qigong, which is slightly different. They both center around the concept of energy, which translates both as Chi and Qi, and has been the basis for Chinese medi-cine for five thousand years. The following description will hopefully entice you to join us in class for great company and a calming physical practice. Tai Chi is known as a soft, or fluid form of the martial arts (as compared to Karate or Tae Kwon Do on the other side of the spectrum). You get your Chi from your center, and with the help of breathing exercises you can learn to feel, nurture and strengthen your chi. The principle of Tai Chi is to be able to control others using your own Chi, while at the same time using their Chi or center against them. Most of us aren’t looking for a fight, but this is the practical side of the martial arts. Qigong is the ancient Chinese system for longevity and health that isn’t focused on a martial application. Qi, meaning energy, and Gong, meaning to work on, is the art of feeling, controlling and improving the flow of Qi throughout the body. When your Qi flows smoothly and with no obstructions, you remain healthy and your organs function properly. When your Chi becomes stagnant or is constricted, health is compromised and organ function declines. The goal of Qigong is to keep your Qi flowing to keep your body healthy and feeling good. It also helps clear the mind to enable it to focus and relax. Practice of Qigong is proven to improve balance and strengthen the immune system (which everyone can use). Utilizing Qigong exercises, Tai Chi offers a gentle series of exercises to improve breathing control, balance, flexibility and joint mobility. The results of continued practice include increasing your Chi flow to increase energy and improve health. You feel better physi-cally and mentally, and the exercise is just right for seniors. So join us every Tuesday and Thursday at 10am at Rendezvous Pointe!

Red Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and vegetables are a great source of fiber and the antioxidant nu-trient, Vitamin C. Red fruits and vegetables also contain some other important nutrients and phytochemicals. • Watermelon, pink grapefruit and tomatoes contain a phytochemical that can keep

your heart healthy. • Cherries and strawberries contain another phytochemical that has been shown to

improve memory. This phytochemical is also found in some blue and purple fruits. • An apple a day really might keep the doctor away! Not only are they high in fiber,

but they have several other phytochemicals that keep your heart healthy and protect you from cancer. Eat them with the skin on for all the good stuff! • Try these other red fruits and vegetables: red bell pepper (good source of beta-carotene), radishes, beets, guava, papaya, red chili pepper, raspberries and pomegranate.

SCAM! This was reported to the Aging Division of the State of Wyoming, and they asked us to pass it along: “The scam consists of an unsolicited phone call to a beneficiary from a party claiming to be from Medicare, notifying the beneficiary that they owe a “Part D Penalty” (presumably a late enrollment penalty), and that it needs to be paid im-mediately. From there, the caller presumably requests banking and/or credit card information for payment.”

Energy Saving Tips: LIGHTING • Switch to Energy Star-Qualified Com-

pact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) from incandescent light bulbs. A CFL produces about 75% less heat, so they are safer to operate and can cut energy costs. They can also last up to 10 times longer than the standard incandescent bulb.

• Put CFLs in hard to reach fixtures. You won’t have to replace them for 7 years or more!

• Keep bulbs clean. Dust can cut light out-put by as much as 25%.
