Six principals of Community BuildingStart with people’s strengthsStart with relationship buildingPlaced based work is vitally important since most

things come together in the neighbourhoodCitizen-led action is more durable and sustainable

than professional interventionSocial justice is at the heart of every community

building effortWhen the conversation shifts from ‘isn’t it awful’ to

what’s possible? Real community building begins

ABCD Process…the journey can only start when the community is involved

Assets

ABCD Approach is a different way of thinking about how to work for change –starting from a place of possibilities, strengths and capacities as opposed to problems and deficiencies.

A Strengths Based Approach helps residents and organisations manage change by mobilising their existing and potential capacities, resources and assets.

Page 12: Community Wellness Service - ABCD - Community Building

•Assets

Community assets include:

The skills of local residentsThe power of local associations The resources of public, private and not for profit

organisationsThe physical and local resources of local placesThe stories of our lives and evolving community

via social media & local mags

Leaders – Those that will lead the process long after you are gone. They are passionate about opening doors in their community and are aware of the strengths as well as the challenges within their community

Connectors – Those that easily connect with large numbers of their neighbours, they are serial relationship builders and seem to know everyone. On average a connector will know 50 people by name in their community.

Gift Givers – Those who want to contribute a particular skill, gift or knowledge set to the community building effort, but not well connected themselves, or may not see themselves in a leadership role.

Who do we need to know?

Bumping Spaces

‘Hot Spots’ within the community where local residents naturally meet

Bumping spaces offer the opportunity to have impromptu informal conversations

Meet people that don’t necessarily access the mainstream local services

A good example would be the local shops, community centres, libraries, parks & school gates

Ideas Works

29th April 2014“Why have a meeting when you can have a party?”

Create space for ideas and opportunities will emerge

Page 35: Community Wellness Service - ABCD - Community Building

18 www.leicspt.nhs.uk

What is an Ideasworks?

Ideas Works

• An ideas works is an opportunity for local residents to come together and discuss ideas that they are passionate about

• Ideas works are held locally within communities, lasting for about 2 hours. The session is planned in conjunction with the local residents, with

the group using the individual skills that they will be bringing to the session to help plan the event. Be that cake making, photography or just a friendly face.

Page 36: Community Wellness Service - ABCD - Community Building

18 www.leicspt.nhs.uk

Ideas Works - The light bulb moment• By the end of

the session, the strangers that entered the building are working together as a team of passionate community connectors, driving their ideas for projects and groups forwards, (often completely ignoring the paid workers helping facilitate the session)

How ABCD can increase building usage

Page 47: Community Wellness Service - ABCD - Community Building

47

Stocking Farm Healthy Living Centre• By encouraging people to develop projects themselves

(with minimal support), building usage increases in an organic way

• The ABCD approach offers a robust approach, that will consistently bring in a wide variety of projects on a regular basis.

• In Nov 2013, there were around 20 users per week, since the start of the ABCD approach we areseeing numbers 10 times that withApril 2014 having over 600 users

• We are continually growing and at the current rate of growth, by June, every booking slot will be filled.
